This restaurant has this sweet and sour chicken that I crave all the time!! It’s a huge portion so I always end up having leftovers which is great. Me and my family always get a plate of hummus which we love with pita bread!!! And I’m a chocolate lover so for dessert chocolate cake with whipped cream topping!! Sweet and Sour is amazing….

Absolutely delicious food. Been coming for a while and the food is always worth it. They recently got new friendly owners and their portions are big and the taste is great. Wait time is isn’t long and they even had free chocolates for the kids. My favorite is the Chicken Deluxe Fries but their wings are also a must-try. 100% Zabiha so I definitely recommend, 10/10

I recently visited Cafe Royale with a group of friends and was blown away by the service and food quality. From the moment we walked in, the staff was attentive and welcoming, making us feel right at home. For those visiting or near San Diego. Cafe Royal near masjid Ribat is a hidden gem. I came from the Bay Area and heard that I had to check this place out The Somali food and even American cuisine they provide is so good Allahuma barik We got different items, chicken plate, lamb shank, mixed meat, and goat plate and then even their Buffalo fries (which was so good man, four guys ate from it as an appetizer) The staff is so courteous and was consistently checking up on us and I have to recommend them The environment is really good and the food is super fresh as well The owner mentioned they are on DoorDash (or process of getting onto the platform) and is close to San Diego university so a great spot for students Will definitely be back إن شاء الله whenever I visit San Diego

Having had good Somali food in SLC, I was excited to discover Somali cuisine in San Diego. Upon a Google/Yelp search, a couple of Somali restaurants came up in the area. We were looking for a place that was open for dine in, and not all the restaurants updated their information online. I called a couple of them and was surprised to find out that some of them weren’t open for months, while they claimed to be open online. This was one of the few that were opened and had dine in with good reviews. The restaurant is located in a strip plaza amongst many other restaurants and shops. It can be considered a “hole in the wall”, with a couple of diner style tables and benches. As the interior felt cramped, we decided to sit outside as there were a couple of tables and chairs for outside dining. As per their recommendations, we ordered the combination plate of tandoori chicken and goat meat with half rice and half spaghetti. The other plate was the chicken soukar with rice. Both plates came with salad. They were out of the mango house drink, so we tried the watermelon and berry house drink. The food was delicious as expected. I really liked how tender and juicy the goat meat was, and the flavorful tandoori chicken; better than some Indian places, and that’s their specialty. The pasta and rice paired well with the meat, and the green (hot) sauce was absolutely amazing. Somali green sauce is the bomb! I have to make it one day, it’s so good! The chicken soukar was like grilled chicken; it wasn’t bad, but I had better. The watermelon house drink was way too sweet, and the berry tasted too diluted. Although the place needs some cosmetic touches to it, it shouldn’t deter you away from trying the food. My experiences with hole in the wall places were rather well, as they usually compensate with amazing food. I haven’t tried the other meats, but I recommend the goat meat. We’ll stop by to try their other menu items if we’re ever in the area.

Cafe Royale had some of the best goat meat dish I've had in a while. Fork tender with some flavorful rice green bell pepper and onion. Their red and green salsa's were amazing, the green one felt right at home with a very pleasant spice level yet still having very complex flavor's. The red salsa was sweeter and was a nice palate cleanser for the dish. The staff was pleasant and welcoming with a nice price point for the amount of food. This might be the new spot!

This is a really cool spot. Nice food, very cool staff. Thrilled with the services here. Mohamed really took care of me. I loved the Barbecue Chicken 11/10 🔥👍🏽 Definitely coming back for it! 💯 recommended ☺️.

Came back again with my friends after a second spartan race. We tried their Somali specials: a goat plate, mixed beef, chicken plate, and a lamb plate. We even got an appetizer item of Buffalo fries (which comes in diff flavors that you can pick from) and four guys finishes that in no time. For the different plates, everything was cooked fresh. The meat was so tender and juicy سبحان الله , and the rice was flavored well also. My friends told me that they enjoyed their chicken. We even got a taste of the burger which was modified and even better than the last time I had it Allahuma barik, Def adding this to my San Diego food list spots and it's close to the masjid as well so recommend coming here after salah if you are hungry

To start off with the service is unmatched, I took a bus to that location due to my car being in the shop. So I wanted a place to sit down and eat, even though the restaurant had no customer sitting area yet. The owner allowed me to sit and eat with his family and it was a great time. I had the goat meat, veggies and rice plate which was freaking fantastic. The plate was so big, I ended up taking half of it home so I could eat it tonight. I will definitely be a regular at that place and I would recommend it to anyone.

We had a FEAST here - the family meal featured generous portions of entree and side dishes. The rice was fluffy and the pasta was fresh. The meats came out very flavorful as well and complimented the sides. I'll be the first to admit that I'm no expert when it comes to African food, but this was a great experience at a very reasonable price. Easy parking. Worth checking out for delivery or when you're in the area!

My friend was craving for samosas, so this is where we went since it was near her place. When we parked, the restaurant was empty, so she wasn't sure if she wanted to go in... It was getting late, so looking for someplace else would just waste more time, so we agreed to give them a try. She also really wanted garlic noodles, so we sat down and ordered the sambusa platter and white garlic pasta to share. The sambusas were pretty good and I loved the spicy green sauce that was on the table. However, the garlic noodle dish was alright- there was not enough garlic. Service was nice and quick though!

DISGUSTING AND INEDIBLE! Over $30 for my order full of hair!!! Not one strand but a whole clump!!! I am sooo disgusted please don't order from this disgusting place!!! They should be banned for serving food containing CLUMPS OF HAIR!!!! I hope the health inspector closes this place down!!!!

I had always noticed this place from my backyard and was curious about it. I decided to check it out finally with a Groupon deal. It wasn't the best deal I remember something like $20 for $15. It was on a Sunday evening, late about 845. I had stopped in once at least a year ago for the coconut cake, which is great by the way. But this time I went in for an entree, maybe a side, and THAT coconut cake. Initially, I had a beef/lamb kabob in mind. Once viewing the menu, I noticed it was not offered in beef. Only chicken. So I went with this. Mushkaki chicken kabob plate with salad and basmati rice. It took kinda long, about 20 min for order to go. Got home and popped open container. Wow, extremely tasty, juicy chicken kabobs and I can't pinpoint the spices they use! Hard to describe. With a little research maybe I would think maybe cumin, turmeric, cardamom, maybe fenugreek. Never had anything like this at all. Sort of a mild curry flavor that was really tasty. Rice was fantastic as well! Since they were out of hummus, I tried the philly and fries. Meat was thicker sliced and seasoned with similar spices, but not tough and not as flavorful as the kabobs. Fries were perfect. I believe this is Somalian food. And I do recognize the language sometimes. Of course, the wife and kid did not enjoy too much as they have very closed-minded taste buds. Small spectrums. Not this guy. Food adventures are fun for me, and I'll be back here for more!

Lamp and goat feast, it was sooo gooood!! I'd definitely come back and get the same!!! 10/10

I have driven by this place for about 6 months and finally stopped in.  I was thinking it was more of a cafe style restaurant.  Did not realize they specialized in halal food until I was looking at the menu.  I ordered the lamb chop with rice as it looked the most appetizing and taste good when cooked properly.  Skipped on the salad and I received a nice plate of juicy lamb and a very light fluffy rice.  It was the perfect amount of food. Friendly staff except the person on his cell phone.  Service was good.  I thought it odd after I sat down when I was asked if I wanted a salad and how I wanted my lamb cooked.  Overall, I thought it was good and would definitely stop in again to try other items on the menu.

I love this place. They are always pleasant and greet you when you walk in. Food is amazing every time. Even for a small business they seem passionate about what they do. Would definitely recommend this place to anybody looking to taste authentic East African cuisine.

I ordered from Grubhub wasn't sure what to expect. I ordered the lamb shank. I waited a little longer because the cafe was very busy according to my grubhub driver. It was worth the wait the lamb shank was very tasty. Lamb tends to be rubbery when not cooked properly which wasn't the case. The lamb shank came with a lot of basmati rice which I could not finish and some green salad. This is by far one of the best lamb shanks I have eaten. I believe I tasted cumin in the seasoning. Whatever else they used it gave the lamb a really good flavor and I will definitely order from here again. I paid $15.99 for the lamb shank plus tax and the fee that grubhub charges to deliver the food.

This place is a golden hole in the wall!! I got recommended by a friend of mine, and I've been craving it ever since. Me and my partner came in for a sit down. Both of us opted for the Goat Feast and the guava, and it was absolutely and for 20 bucks, they give you some very decent portions the only reason i didnt completely crush mine was becausei wanted some for later. The goat was perfectly tender, and the fat melted like butter. The rice was good, and the onions and bell peppers were the right amount of sweet to balance the goat. It also came with this red sauce, and as someone who has the lowest spice tolerance known to man, it was a spice I embraced. The guava juice was also very good. I wasn't gonna get it at first, but nothing changed my decision, so quick after having a sample. The customer service was also very personal while waiting for our food. we had an entire conversation on the history of this space and the food scene in the area they were so attentive and very kind. However, compliments aside, I will say this place is in need of a makeover. A lot of people would easily miss this place because, visually, it doesn't stand out but I guess that's also how you know the food is good. This place has so much potential, and I really look forward to seeing it thrive definitely coming back!!!

I ate at Café royale tonight, and it was delicious. I haven't ate here in years since moving away from the area. However the food was just as delicious as before and the meat was so tender. I had some of the best service tonight that I've had in a long time. Thank you Mohamed for the amazing cultural experience. I will be returning soon.

Placed an Uber pick up order over here at this place. And when I got there I got told my order was going to take about 5-10 min and then I took a seat and I got kicked out of the restaurant. A couple seconds later And got told to wait out side for my order which was fine. 10 min later I got asked what's your order? -.- like come on I just told them I placed an order. So I showed them my order.And I was all ready felling iffy about the place because the moment I walked in the restaurant didn't even look like a cafe it looked more like a Little inconvenience store. I'm not going to lie the restaurant was super dirty and it had an awful smell. I just ended up canceling my order. And went to the Jamaican spot down the street.

The Absolute Best Somalian Food in ALL of San Diego. Whether you get the young Lady to take your order or young man Both of them are nice kind people who speak politely and clearly. My favorite thing on the Menu is the sweet n sour chicken. It is to die for!! I find myself craving it often with a Side of bariis. Do not forget the green sauce Although rather spicy it is a nice addition to whatever you're getting. Cafe Royal is a must stop for me anytime I come to Sandiego 10/10

Very disappointed! Came here to order sambusas for iftar, yelp said they were open, get to restaurant and a cardboard sign says on the door "Open @ 4pm for Ramadan". So I waited in my car for 1hr 1/2 until 4pm. At 4:05 I go to see if the door was unlocked. Door was still locked and no one inside. I wait another 30 minutes until 4:30p, finally the door was open but all the lights were off. The smell was putrid like something was rotting. And when the two guys from the kitchen came out front, they said "we are still closed!" One of the cooks, a short man was not shy and was scratching his butt while the other man was talking to me. This place is a joke!! Don't waste your time like I did!

Had the taste for some African food. We ordered sweet & sour chicken with rice; chicken kabob with rice plus pasta. Unfortunately they didn't have any chicken sambusas. 1st we had to wait 5 minutes to order because nobody was at the register nor in the front of cafe. 20 minutes to get our order that was lukewarm food not even hot. Quite disappointing especially since I do love their food. The customer service is horrendous. Lack of attentiveness and service. The chicken kabob were delicious. The chicken was moist, tender and seasoned perfectly. Nice big chucks of breast meat. I love their pasta with sauce it's similar to spaghetti but with a unique blend of African spices. The rice was delicious as well. I love their rice. Extremely flavorful, fluffy and delicate. The sweet & sour chicken is excellent. Perfectly cuts of chicken deep fried then tossed in sweet & sour sauce. The sauce isn't too sweet nor tangy, it's just right. The chicken pieces was not overly breaded, perfect chicken to bread ratio. The chicken kabobs and sweet & sour chicken are highly recommended menu items!! Must try Prices are reasonable. Service is below average. Food is good!!

I love this place they have this amazing lamb shank with this aromatic yellow rice amazing!!!! Definitely need to try their lamb shank or their goat royale which is also delicious and my favorite!! Best of all is all organic and they don't torture their animals before slaughtering them. Maybe that's why the meat taste authentic!!

One of the few reliably Halal restaurants in San Diego. It was my first time in since the new ownership. I got the sweet and sour chicken royale and the portion was more than generous. Flavor and texture was very authentic. Perfect balance of cardamom and the other spices in the rice. Also got the beef deluxe fries (I think that's what they're called). Delicious and not dry at all. Service was beyond expectations and food came out quick. Definitely somewhere I'd recommend taking the family to.

I have only come here a couple of times. On those visits I have only purchased a drink to go. It's something about this place that doesn't give me a positive vibe or the motivation to eat. Maybe it's the darkness of the restaurant. The lighting is dim and the furniture inside is a dark brown color so it feels gloomy and outdated. Maybe it's because I generally get there right about the time they first open and I catch them off guard and they are not prepared. Maybe it's because the customer service is very slow and not welcoming. I don't know what it is. Today I waited about three minutes before any one acknowledged me and by that time I was ready to leave. I will give them three stars because the dining area appeared to be clean and organized and they opened on time.

This new Cafe offers unique flavors from east Africa; including some excellent Ethiopian coffees and new age smoothies. That being said, I ordered a cup of that Ethiopian coffee with steamed milk, and couple of ground chicken Sambusas, and a Grilled Beef Wrap with Fries. The rice was delicious but the order we receive was wrong, my husband had fish but didn't receive it and instead when we got home we saw that it was just two dishes of chicken only! Not happy with the quality of service!

This place serves good Somali cuisine. I love all the East African cuisines I've tried although Somali ranks very high on my list. I would recommend the goat, and the coffee. Also, their hot sauce is amazing. There was another chicken dish I tried that was also amazing although I can't seem to remember it.

Amazing Somali food. Always flavorful and rich. And their portion sizes are great for the price you pay! Fills you up and then some. My favorite are their pasta dishes and their suqaar. So yummy. Love their sweets and sambusa as well!

Yes, yes, yes, I really like this place a lot. Come here for authentic, delicious African food! It's unassuming from the outside: it has pretty good reviews on Yelp but it's quite empty inside with only a few families scattered through out the restaurant. (Came at around 1 PM on a Saturday) Little did ya know, it has amazing food for such a good price! Since it's a small family owned restaurant, there was only one worker working the register and serving food. It didn't hinder service at all since there wasn't much people. You walk in, order at the register, pay, and sit yourself down on the tables or booths. The waiter will then set the table up for you after you sit (btw free drink with check-in!) I got to try two things (1) goat feast royale plate (2) the beef saqaar plate. I wish I got to try the lab but alas, that sold out. I think my favorite dish was the goat so if you had to choose out of the two, I'd get that! The dishes are freaking big, like bigger than my head and the portions are ridiculous. You get a large portion of salad, a large portion of meat, and a large portion of rice. Oooo the rice is sooo good. Somali-style rice is generally cooked with meat broth and flavored with spices like turmeric, which, mixed together, creates such a flavorful, savory rice. WHAT I GOT: (1) Goat Feast Royale ($10.99): Chunks of goat meat and gravy on your rice and salad. Simple but so delicious! Goat was so tender and though they used simple spices and vegetables, the technique was perfect. I loved how they reduced the meat and vegetable juices together to make a gravy that tied the whole dish together. I RECOMMEND (2) Beef Suqaar (10.99): Pretty good stuff. Slices of beef so it isn't as juicy as the goat. Similar spices used for the beef and the goat so even though this is still super good, I prefer the goat more! :)

The portion size is fair, the meat is generous, hearty and succulent, the spicy sauces are incredibly flavorful, and thank you for hooking me up with the Federation Style with Pasta. Truly one of the best Halal Restaurants in San Diego. Kudos!

I've been here twice. The first time was good. I had to wait about 30 minutes even though I ordered over the phone 20ish minutes before but it made sense because I didn't realize I was calling just before sunset during Ramadan (I know, just dumb....got it). The food was GREAT and I was really impressed with the hospitality because while I waited, the young man at the counter brought me figs, bread, etc... while they broke fast (quick note, I am not Muslim but I respect everyone who isn't a horrible person and that was cool to receive their offer. Today was different. I called in my order again and when I got there it was seemingly slow with 1 person ordering food. But apparently not. I'm going to call the "customer" Uncle (insert name here) because I don't know him. I'm standing behind him for what feels like 5-10 minutes while he talks to the cashier and the young man behind the counter even looks me in my eye a few times but they continue to talk. Obviously not ordering anything. I eventually get fed up and leave. My car is parked directly in front of the door so when I turn to get in, Uncle "insert name here" is looking at me. Nobody says a word! I wouldn't have accepted the food anyhow at this point because I don't beg businesses to take my money. But it goes to show that these folks don't care about keeping your business. I like to think I'm objective so I'll end this review saying, if you don't mind being treated like a second rate individual, GO. The food is good. But if service matters, try another place.

If you are in San Diego and looking for something different but not too heavy you must try Cafe Royale Somalian food. This place is family oriented and loaded with family recipes. Small restaurant with the personal touch fresh lemonade, homemade marinated dish are out of this world. My friend ordered combo chicken and beef. As usual I love eating chicken. Both dishes came with salad and some kind of seasoning rice. Best part was three kind of sauces but we both loved the green sauce I think there was a Cilantro and light spices. Food was delicious, service was friendly and fast. Place could be more cleaner but may be that day they were short help. Mohammad was very nice and helpful with the menu. We will love to go back.

The guy in there is super rude he is always on his cell phone and not trying to attend the customers... im never coming here again! There going to run this business to the ground.... one loyal customer lost!

I have been to this place more number of times than at any other place in San Diego in the span of an year. It is 16miles from my home & workplace. However, I have no qualms about coming to this place for a number of reasons. 1) Halal - This one assurance is the biggest reason. I can eat whatever they offer knowing that no cross contamination has taken place. If they are selling it, it is Halal. 2)Good food - They have a good variety on their menu. Appetizers, main course & desserts are prepared with utmost care. Always fresh and taste yummylicious. 3)Value for money - Serving size is perfect 4)Service - Good friendly staff and prompt service. 5)Parking - Never a problem My experience: As a regular customer, I have always seen them serve fresh delicious food. My favorites - Mozzarella Sticks, Jalapeño poppers, Goat Feast Royale, Tiramisu Hubby's favorites - Philly cheese steak, Chicken Mushkaki, Hot and Sour Chicken wings, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Cheesecake I once asked them to deliver to my place for a dinner party. My residence was a far shot from their usual delivery locations but for a just delivery fees, they got everything to my place in time. There was not the slightest of compromise in the quality of the food. I should have written this review earlier. I absolutely love this place. Do try their other desserts and other things on the menu. We are so taken by our favorites that we rarely try new things. If the sights and signs are to be believed, they may be just as delicious if not better.

Oh. My. Gosh. Absolutely loved my order. I ordered the grilled tilapia plate for delivery and coconut cake. I was so hungry that i didnt tale a picture but i should have because my pictures dont do any justice. The first thing, the delivery was sooner than I expected within 30 minutes of ordering and usually other places take about an hour. The driver was really nice, i couldnt get his name cause we were both in a hurry and busy. The food was definitely fresh and was still fairly hot, but not so hot it burned my mouth. The fish and rice was a generous portion and then the cake was very moist and subtly sweet but enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. I even had a coworker try it cause it was so good. 5 stars all around. WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND.

This is the only place I go to when I come to San Diego. The chicken succar and sweet and sour chicken are amazing, eat with the green sauce but at your own Best food ever, I wish there was an LA location.

Cafe Royale is a Mediterranean/East African/Somali inspired, cross-cultural restaurant and this review is based on their catered food experience only! Our company catered Cafe Royale for lunch and ordered the rice, sambusa, chicken drumsticks, beef, tilapia and salad. All the food was uniquely seasoned and flavorful, with spices that bursts of East African taste. The rice is perhaps the best East African rice I have tasted and my favorite, with some red-colored rice mixed in to bring out the flavor and color. The tilapia is my second favorite, seasoned well with lime slices and not over baked. The chicken drumsticks were tender, but could use a bit more seasoning. The salad, though not much ingredient besides cheese and tomatoes, was refreshing and the house-made dressing really gave it a kick. What really stole the show was their house-made spicy serrano green sauce. My colleague thought it was salad dressing and drizzled it all over his salad, only to get hit with a sharp pain on his tongue after taking a big bite! Once everyone realized it was hot sauce and how delicious it was, we were all fighting for it to dip the sambusa and meat. The catering portions are pretty big and we even had leftovers to take home. Needless to say, I aliquoted some of the serrano hot sauce! Highly recommend Cafe Royale catering for future events.

I came in for lunch and got the combination platter with Cajun chicken and tandoori chicken. The platter came with rice and a side salad. The food overall was delicious, and the staff was very attentive. This is a great spot to stop by for a sit-in luck or dinner. Their watermelon-mango drink was really good so I definitely recommend it.

I've passed this place by countless of times before, but today I decided to give it a try. The cashier was friendly and gave us a menu to have a better look at our options. I ordered the coconut cake and chicken kebab Royale and it was about $13. It was said to take about 10-15 minutes so I went around the plaza until I figured it was time. Once I got it, it smelled great and looked yummy (the rice was so colorful too). So. Much. Rice. Not complaining though, it was delicious and since I couldn't finish it all, they're tomorrow's leftovers. Chicken was delicious and moist. I loved all the flavors. The salad was small but yummy too. Two little sauces were given, a spicy green one and a ranch, which was nice. The coconut cake was good and sweet. I expected it to taste more like coconut flakes but that's on me. I'm knocking a star off because the cashier didn't have his mask on and idk how I felt about that. But still, since the food was really good and I would like to go back to try other items off the menu.

they got good tasty burgers for cheap price halal zabiha if I want some outside halal food I go there it is pretty cheap here and owner said it's zabiha

They got the Best Goat Feast Royle and there Super generous and clean place to eat. Very friendly and halal.

Deeeeeeeelicious! My family came in one night and ordered the Chicken Mushkaki (with salad and rice) and the Goat Feast Royale ("Federation style" -- with pasta, rice and salad). The meal ended with a warm slice of coconut cake. Everything was delicious and the owner and his family were hospitable, kind and attentive. We couldn't have asked for a more delightful family dining experience.

I really don't know much about African/Middle Eastern food but I like the food here. Every time I come here the service is great and the employees are so willing to explain what is what. It's a small little place but there's enough seating and some outside too. I've had the I believe it was a mango drink for about a buck and it was pretty good. I had the lamb plate and it was good with a ton of rice but the lamb was a little greasy. I also tried the chicken plate and I was very happy. They also have a few smoothies which I thought was different because it's a Middle Eastern restaurant. Well I really like this spot and will be back.

We absolutely love this place. The food is so fresh and the owner and his family are so nice. We try to have dinner here at least once a month. Our new favorite is their combo plate, the sweet and sour chicken is amazing. We also enjoy the Cajun chicken and the tandoori. Highly recommend this place.

New African joint not far from SDSU. Plenty of parking and free wifi. I had the Grilled Beef Wrap (grilled beef, soft Arabian bread- not pita, veggies and house sauce) perfectly spiced for $4.99, Or $6.99 combo. Also try the mango smoothie - flavorful.

It was a very busy day, our food took awhile to be ready but that's understandable. We ordered the goat meat and lamb chops. It was my first time and the food was incredible. I liked the way it was cooked and its flavor. Worth the wait!
