On the Grid : Café Saint-Henri

"This is the latest outpost of a local micro-roaster taking Montreal by storm. This sun-filled space at the Jean Talon market is designed to encourage discussion between knowledgeable staff and caffeine-curious customers. Each bag and cup have a unique origin story and taste profile. The Café also bottles their own sodas, including a "spruce" flavour. Fresh pastries and savory treats also are served daily." - Dynamo

"Third-Wave Coffeeshop Mingles With Italian Traditions Finally, a decent coffee shop in Montreal 's busiest farmer's market! Café Saint-Henri was long-awaited and, fortunately, doesn't disappoint; it features a very bright, elegant decor with plenty of seating and friendly service. Not to mention the main attraction, coffee, which is definitely worth the $5 per latte pricetag. Grab a seat on the sunny outdoor terrace if you can, and indulge in some good old-fashioned peoplewatching. Good to know: the third-wave café roasts and brews its own beans. There is a large boutique area inside where it is possible to choose from a vast selection of coffee and high-end teas."

The Best Places to Eat at the Jean-Talon Market - Eater Montreal

"For early morning market-goers, coffee is a no-brainer, if not a necessity. Saint-Henri makes a mean latte, and their Montreal-roasted bean blends are sold there, too. Their Godshot Espresso is a good choice for those who prefer their coffee on the more chocolatey side of life." - Mallory Frayn, Holly Tousignant

Honestly, it is a cute café, small. Nice that it's directly next to the marché jean talon- really had to pee when I got there so it sucked to be told they don't have restrooms. Employee was nice - she did initially forget to add the mapple syrup to my latte so the first sip was bitter. They didn't really have much pastries. Idk, wasn't like " wow this is where I wanna get coffee often " - you need to drink you coffee fast too cuz the to go cup doesn't really hold itself strong.

The baristas here are super friendly and welcoming. Great coffee and atmosphere as well. One suggestion would be to have larger tables, but everything else is great.

I came here just to check the team attitude after reading bad comments about that. To be honest they were really friendly smiling to everyone. The coffee was great and the atmosphere feels like the authentic coffee shop of Marché Jean-Talon It was a good experience! Cheers

This is a great chain. Ordered a decaf latte and it was really good! Staff are friendly here as well.

I stopped by here to get some iced coffee and cool off. To my surprise, they were selling some geish coffee beans for a limited time. The coffee was also delicious and would love to try out more items from Their menu if I get a chance to go back!

Google
This is a fantastic coffee shop in an idyllic setting, sitting in a market with no cars going by is a rare treat. World class coffee, nice pastries, various types of milk, terrasse has nice, comfortable chairs too, which is usually a rare feat. So make sure to combine your morning market shopping with a coffee :)

Google
enjoyed the coffee and experience. enjoyed the roast used for their espresso shots and also for espresso with milk (you will see the roast on the menu by the cashier). we had both the long espresso and also a flat white. you can grab your drink to go after ordering outside the cafe or request to have it in the cafe.

Yelp
Cute little coffee spot near the Jean Talon market. Ordered latte frappe. It was ok nothing great. Just like other coffee places i feel like coffee in Canada is very acidic. Bathroom was out of order too which was annoying. Not sure if i will come back.

Yelp
Last cafe on my cafe crawl with my friend! I only ordered a cold hot chocolate here and didn't think it was amazing, but then again they usually don't make that kind of drink here. The location is a bit hard to find but it's really nice! The lighting didn't make me feel very productive though, it's more chill for a coffee with friends. I don't think I'd get much studying done here. The good seating is most likely to be taken if you don't show up early, and they don't have outlets everywhere. I do want to visit again to get some food though, they have a lunch menu but I arrived too late to try it and I didn't want pastries.

Yelp
I was up early and in the area while having bad morning, and after had a long day prior. I was walking down the street yawning and beginning to feel completely burned out, despite having already had a cup of coffee...and it was only about 08:30! I was desperate, and I decided to make a stop in to Marché Jean-Talon hoping to get some something to wake me up. It was a weekday, they did have a few customers, and one or two people ahead of me in line, but it was not too busy and my order was placed within a minute or two. Service was quick and efficient. I'd estimate that I had a latte in my hand within 5 minutes of entering the building, and that latte was VERY reasonably priced...but most importantly, as soon as I tasted that first sip I really felt reinvigorated. This was a nice strong latte! Bold flavor, simple, and just what I needed. It was a very straightforward, basic latte with no frills. The coffee itself seemed to be good quality. It helped me get through the next few hours. So, thank you Café Saint Henri, and I'll keep this location on my radar!

Yelp
Lovely shop with strong delicious expresso and friendly staff. This adorable cafe has a great location looking out over Marche Jean Talon and a ton of sunny outdoor seating in the summertime. The 40s mint green cups, nostalgic retro signage and antique pastel maps just enhance what is a very solid, very strong cup of expresso.

Yelp
I arrived at the café at 8h00 on a Thursday so I can't say it was too crowded or comment on the speed of the service during peak traffic hours. However, my coffee was prepared quickly and I was able to serve myself a pastry. I ordered a nitro-iced coffee which was tasty but had less of a beer thickness/mouth-feel that I have experienced and loved with other nitro-brew coffees. I was weary of the chocolatine as it seemed it had sat out for a bit but the flavor I was hoping for was all there! The tables inside are VERY small; I wouldn't recommend this place for a study session. However, the outdoor seating seemed to have larger tables. I do want to head back to see more of what they were selling in the "store" portion of the café!

Yelp
I love St-Henri coffee! This location is located at Marché Jean-Talon. Its not a location meant for studying, it's quite small and just has 6-8 little bar tables to sit at and enjoy a coffee. In the summer they have a few tables outside. I was always buy a bag of espresso or filter coffee beans (tip: you get a free coffee when you buy a bag of beans!).

Yelp
A branch of the legendary Saint-Henri Coffee Shop, hence the namesake, this little joint is located in the Jean-Talon Market and serves the same coffee that they serve in Saint-Henri. The coffee is excellent, it might actually be the best coffee in the immediate vicinity of the market, however, the chairs are really not comfortable, and the lack of staff can create a certain wait time for coffee, which is not cool. The atmosphere is yuppie minimalist, while I'm totally cool with this, it is not my cup of tea, and the straws are cardboard straws, probably because they want to be environmentally friendly. Just get the coffee to go an enjoy it in the market.

Yelp
I know Saint Henri cafe from Quebec City. Their espresso drinks are probably the best in North America. This branch has excellent coffee as expected. Missing: their amazing granola with berries and yoghurt they serve in Quebec City.

Yelp
Visiting Montreal over the weekend, what can I say but I've got a sweet tooth! Pig-ing out on all the maple syrup goods here and their maple syrup latte! Actually really good balance of sweetness ! Good atmosphere with a jazz band playing outside the square. They have outside seating right in the sun. Ladies, top-up your tan here on a sunny day while enjoying one of the best cafes the city has to offer!

Yelp
New clever minimal design concept yuppie coffee house on the edge of MJT. I ordered a cappuccino and it was divinely creamy at the start but a very light roast. At $4 I'd declare it on the higher price end of the spectrum for a coffee that will be interesting to see if people will support. If you walk under 10 minutes you can get one for $2.50 on Dante @ San Simeon. I prefer a darker stronger roast but what the hell do I know about coffee my name isn't fellow Yelper Khai our local Yelp Java aficionado- expert. Pay more attention to his review than mine as he speaks the gospel. You can tell from the design of this place that they did their homework and invested thought, time and money to create a higher quality experience from a local roaster. Perusing the shop I did notice some Chemex (Boston based company) and Aeropress units to make coffee at home (recently I bought an Aeropress (in Alberta) and its freaking amazing for $35-39 depending on where you buy it. 10x better than a French press folks. Buy one if you think a French press is the kitty's scratch post! I'll come by and give this funkster-hipster place another chance. If you like Independant shops it's a much better option than Timmy Ho-Ho's or that green mermaid from Seattle. Check it out.

Yelp
This is an updated review after attempting a second visit at Saint-Henri Microtorréfacteur's Jean-Talon location. Previously, I had said they have some of the best coffee in Montreal, but that their seating area was small and somewhat uncomfortable. This is still true. What I discovered today upon ordering a coffee is that they don't take debit - only cash or credit. And that is, in my book, unforgivable. The nearest ATM is a Desjardins ATM which charges a hefty 4$ fee to clients of other banks - the price of a coffee, actually. And so I give up on this location and will walk to another coffee shop that will serve me better. Sayonara, Jean-Talon's Saint-Henri.

Yelp
Decent latte. Nice presentation. The place is beautiful inside and had plenty of tables. They also had lovely outside area. Flowers on the tables coupled with nice latte art made it a nice experience.

Yelp
Great cookies, coffee and price/quality ratio. Can't ask for more. Cinnamon cookies is a must.

Yelp
Limited places to sit, overpriced beverages, rude barista, and they only carry whole milk or cream. Its cute inside though.

Yelp
Admittedly, I only visited Cafe Saint-Henri once but my first experience wasn't a positive one. Taste preferences can vary greatly from person to person but I am one who likes their lattes to have a stronger coffee taste (i.e., I don't want it to just taste like steamed milk). The latte I had here was a bit too weak. (As a comparison, I also find Starbuck's to have weak lattes as well). In addition, they only offer one size for the drinks and they are on the small size (with probably a medium sized price). Speaking of price, if you want to buy, it was cash only when I was there and since I didn't see any credit card/debit machines, this may be the norm. It's quite a popular location though and was very busy when I was there (of course, everything around Marche Jean Talon gets a lot of foot traffic). They have some tables outdoors so you can sit and watch as everyone shops around the market. If you are in the area and want to try someplace else, there is at least one coffee shop inside Marche Jean Talon which I had tried earlier that day and I think that would be my choice over Saint Henri.

Yelp
Tidy coffee shop right outside the Jean Talon market, this spot's got some stronggg caffeine. It's also quite spacious and might be a good place to get some work done.

Yelp
I stopped in here while doing some shopping at Jean Talon Market. I had a cappuccino and sat down and enjoyed it here. The cappuccino was great. It was smooth and flavourful and no sugar required. They have outdoor seating, which many took the opportunity to enjoy, but I opted to sit inside which was tastefully decorated and air conditioned. The prices here are a little on the expensive side, but I'd definitely return.

Yelp
A friend suggested we meet here for coffee, as she is a local I was more than happy to trust her. This cafe is directly across from/part of the markets. It was a Sunday afternoon and it was bustling with people. We ordered our coffees and looked for somewhere to sit. However there aren't that many places inside just small tables and a long bench, we were a group of 3 so it didn't really suit. We had our coffee in hand within a few minutes, and as there were no seats available outside, did what many others were doing, sat on the kerb and drank our coffee, chatted and people watched: the coffee was lovely and creamy. Definitely would go back, they also had kombucha in bottles and a large area for coffee beans etc. (which is why there are no tables inside as its all taken up by product)

Yelp
Someone described this as a yuppie spot, and it most certainly is. But there's a part of me that is a yuppie. The automated pour-over machines kind of give you a sense of the coffee: good beans, ho-hum brewing, but the decor is pleasing and the view of the market if you can snag a table in front is great. Soy cappuccino and gluten free muffin totally hit the spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee, but they're chronically understaffed and so it takes forever to get your order. Service is slow, slow, slow...

Mel D.

Yelp
Boldest, most delicious and notably the most beautiful cappuccino I've ever had - and I've sipped on few. The perfect pick me up to start your exploration of the Marché Jean-Talon or the perfect conclusion. The Cappuccino costs about $4 which I'd happily pay again for the same result. Exudes cool, minimalism design was well though out. I walked out of there with more knowledge about coffee then I did walking in as they took the time to add some fun and interesting details about the process and even about the adventures of the company. This coffee place was more of an experience than just coffee for me. I'll be stopping by again next time I'm in town.

Yelp
This new Saint-Henri cafe has a great minimal design and serves super tasty drinks. They also offer beans from different countries that they buy directly with the coffee farmers.
