Our second full day in Calistoga found us starting our day eating breakfast at the venerable Cafe Sarafornia -- a long-standing eatery serving locals and visitors delicious and incredibly filling breakfasts and lunches for over 50 years.
When you walk through the front doors, you feel that you are entering an institution that you must make a pilgrimage to enjoy some delicious food in a downhome environment with cool decorative art hanging from the walls.
The Cafe offers an array of tasty-sounding breakfast items. I had several options from which to choose, such as the Braised Pork Tostada, Homemade Corned Beef Has, Chicken Fried Steak, and apparently "Best Huevos Rancheros in Napa Valley," and Brannan Benedict. The last item I almost ordered this with its ingredients, including bacon, avocado, and homemade gravy).
However, I decided on a "Create your own Omelet" comprising chorizo, bacon, cheddar, and avocado. The kitchen served the avocado on top of the omelet and two monster slices of sourdough toast. The omelet was incredibly tasty and filling, with the chorizo and bacon filling me with delight, while avocado gave a nice creaminess.
I ordered a side of bacon to go with this omelet. It called me constantly from the side dish, asking me to eat it, so I obliged it. The bacon was glorious, cooked to perfection to the point where I had to focus on the three (3) to four (4) strips I was served.
Additionally, I was incredibly impressed by their gluten-free bread, which my wife thought was glutenous wheat, but the waitress corrected us, explaining that many patrons have asked whether this was the case. It turns out the bread is made of buckwheat and gluten-free and tastes just like real bread.
Between the omelet, the bacon, and the sourdough toast, I was stuffed by the time we left. But I was incredibly satisfied with our experience. I would absolutely return the next time we stay or drive through downtown Calistoga. This place is magical.
