Peckham’s Best Restaurants | Where to Eat in Peckham and Peckham Rye | Eater London

"That Rye Lane’s most visible Nigerian restaurant isn’t Nigerian-owned, just like it’s fishmongers and butchers, is a thorny issue far more complex and interesting than the ‘cultural appropriation vs appreciation’ argument normally served up as circular foodie discourse on Twitter. Indeed, it would be forgivable to walk past the ‘Asian and African’ sign on Cafe Spice’s awnings and mistake it for a South Asian restaurant, although the meat pies and moin moin in the window would soon correct this. The best thing at Cafe Spice isn’t actually anything made in house, but the bags of kilishi it sells from the now resurgent Alhaji Suya, which is on Peckham Park Road but not, for this guide’s purpose, in Peckham. Kilishi is a type of jerky made from dried, flattened muscle, the bright purple colour of a bruise, which packs a sweet, honeyed heat that builds and builds and builds. The only way you’ll get any better in London is through a connect not declaring it in their suitcase and a customs officer turning the other way." - Jonathan Nunn

The Most Disgusting Dining Experience Ever – Avoid at All Costs I was absolutely horrified by how disgusting this place was. The smell was unbearable. The utensils were reused without being cleaned, and the hygiene standards were appalling. The meat was rubbery and tasted like soap. The only thing that was remotely decent was the rice. To make matters worse, I found hair in my food, and it wasn’t properly covered, leaving it exposed to flies. The lingering fish smell was so bad I had to go home and brush my teeth just to get rid of it. Even days later, I’m still haunted by how revolting this experience was. Unsurprisingly, I ended up with food poisoning. This place urgently needs to be inspected by the local council’s Environmental Health Officers and the Food Standards Agency (FSA). It’s shocking that they’re allowed to continue operating in such appalling conditions. This was by far the worst dining experience I’ve ever had, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Avoid this place at all costs – it’s truly disgusting.

I was in Peckham with a friend and stumbled upon this restaurant. They have dine in and takeaway services. It’s not Nigerian owned but they sell mostly Nigerian foods. I got akara which was great, moi moi and some protein options. Prices were also very reasonable. They sell puff puff and some other Nigerian snacks. The service was also great and I got a discount on the moi moi which is always a bonus

Came and collected take out today, staff were very friendly and helpful and the food did not disappoint, thoroughly enjoyed a mixed box of Jolloff rice, beef with plantain and oxtail. Highly recommend this place.

Google
Incredibly nice man served me, gave advice (when asked) on which accompaniments went best with the jollof. Perfectly spiced, huge piece of jerked chicken, stewed beef was really tender, generous portions of plantain and chili sauce, I was worried about the price but actually you get a huge portion and it lasts for 2 if not 3 meals. Definitely somewhere I'd recommend

Google
A good place to pick up some authentic Nigerian food to takeaway. I like to get moi moi in the leaf here. 9/10 it’s a great consistency taste and the perfect amount of pepper. I’ve also tried some of their soups, meat on the stick and the jollof rice all of which have been good. My only gripe would be that the prices don’t remain consistent from one day to the next or by what is printed on the menu.

Amasing , welcoming and kind customer service. Various cooked West African -Nigerian meals, reasonably priced. I had the delicious tilapia fish stew, fried yam & plantain. Thanks for the wonderful experience. Recommended and will come again.

I have been eating at Cafe Spice for over 4 years now and they never disappoint! The food is always amazing, hot, fresh, and full of authentic Nigerian flavour. Everything is clean and well-prepared, and you can really taste the care they put into their cooking. The team are also incredibly polite and welcoming every single time, which makes the experience even better. I am so excited that they now have a branch in Catford Indoor Market, which means I can enjoy their food whether I am in Peckham or Catford/Lewisham. It’s great having that option so close by. If you are looking for delicious Nigerian food with excellent service, Cafe Spice is the place to go!

Yelp
If your a Nigerian and you want to eat go here. If your not a Nigerian still go here !!! Cafe spice has the best Nigerian food in London! Their efo, egusi, okra soup is to die for! Leaves you licking your fingers for more honestly! The jellof rice mixed with fried rice with prawns tastes good also! They have delicious pie's and the plantain tastes just like what your mother would make. Yelp
Great if you are into Nigerian food. They do jollof rice, spinach, egusi, even puff puffs and snails. Almost like being in the old country! Food like your mum used to make. They also do curries of various flavours, you can eat in or take away

Yelp
Cafe Spice is situated in Nigeriaville in Southeast London. The decor is not amazing....but hey it's Peckham Rye Lane so what do you expect. They sell Nigerian food and Indian food as to how that goes hand in hand....I don't know. The nonchalant server said that the owner spent five years in Nigeria, more than I have ever spent. So saying that, my expections were high. The Nigerian food was beautifully displayed whetting my appetite. My sister picked Puff Puff which like a Carribean dumpling but sweet, and meat pie which she throughly enjoyed. I ordered a red beans and fried rice and I was not impressed. The rice looked great but was not too my standards and the beans needed an extra kick. The price was cheap at five pounds and it was a good portion size. If I'm in Lagos/London again I will try their sweet/savoury snacks since my sister enjoyed it much.
