Modern American dishes, cocktails, draft beer, and people-watching

"When: Monday-Thursday, 3-5pm, all day Sunday The Deal: $14 half-dozen oysters; discounted snacks; $12 select cocktails; $10 select wine; $9 select sparkling; $5 select beer This is a little cafe on the ground floor of The Standard in the East Village where you can grab a drink and a few oysters any time of the day. They have a huge outdoor space with patio tables out front that aren't usually too crowded, so keep this place in mind for all your last-minute seafood needs." - willa moore, neha talreja, will hartman, sonal shah
"The patio situation here is truly one of the best in the East Village, and it’s where you should go to drink rosé like it’s lime juice and your doctor just told you that you have scurvy. Just get a table outside, pretend you aren’t eavesdropping on the people around you, order some drinks (and French fries), and watch the less-day-drunk pedestrians walk down Bowery. Seeing as how this place is in the bottom of a hotel, you can start hanging out here as early as 7am. If they serve you alcohol that early, please take a photo and tag us." - bryan kim, matt tervooren
"Downtown hotel bars tend to be like sanctuaries for people who have walk-in closets that look like Soho sample sales. We’re not sure how this phenomenon came to be, but the bar at the Standard Hotel in the East Village is no exception, and it makes for great people-watching. Order something from the “On the Wagon” section of the menu, and hang out at a table in the indoor/outdoor space next to someone who you think you recognize from a show on Bravo." - matt tervooren
"The other day, a friend’s younger brother emailed you about an “informational interview.” Now you need a spot that’s quiet enough for a conversation, has both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and serves some decent food. Plus, it should be cool, because you’re pretty sure this person looks up to you more than your own younger siblings ever have. Try Cafe Standard at the Standard East Village. It’s in the bottom of the hotel, and you can have a cocktail in the little space while you dispense career advice." - bryan kim
"The Standard draws a crowd. That’s guaranteed. So if you’re looking for a spot that will convince your date that you’re culturally relevant, pick the cafe at The Standard East Village. They serve food and drinks all day, but you don’t necessarily have to eat. Expect young professionals, fashion types, and loud music. The bar itself seats a decent number, but there are also some tables and a banquette that always seems to be claimed. If it isn’t too cold, you can sit outside, and if you decide you’d like a nice dinner, Narcissa is right next door." - bryan kim, katherine lewin
