The 38 Essential Osaka Restaurants

"Ultra-thick, fluffy pancakes have taken the country by storm and are a regular sight on social media, but Sunshine has been flipping jiggly flapjacks since 1973, long before the breakfast-dessert crossovers became a trend. Pair the bouncy hotcakes with a drizzle of maple syrup and a cup of dark roast. Japanese coffee shop classics like omurice, pilaf, and spaghetti Napolitan round out the vintage menu." - La Carmina, Michael Sosnick

Google
A charming old school cafe with great coffee and classic tasting food. The staff is friendly, the service is attentive and quick with everything reasonably priced. This is an easy recommendation. First off, all these people mentioning how hard it is to find but don't even bother assisting on how to find the cafe. 🤨 If you are coming here, your GPS won't work as the cafe is underground and is not located on the main loop of shops and restaurants. It's down a hallway. There is a map/layout near the entrance/exit of the stairwells to help you locate it. There most likely will be a line of people queuing outside, look for that. I had to wait around 20-ish minutes for a seat and when I left there was still a line of people waiting to get in. The food menu is limited. Nothing wrong with that, just feel like it should be mentioned. I ordered the pancake or "hot cake" set and omurice. The food has this homemade vibe and taste going for it. It's nostalgic despite the fact this was my first time here. Maybe something to do with the atmosphere being so retro. The down and dirty of it is the omurice taste like ketchup rice with egg. That is what it is, not bad by any means nor something revolutionary or special. It's just...good, served hot and fresh. If you don't like ketchup, you won't like this omurice. The hot cakes was something between a sponge cake and a scone. Semi fluffy, semi dense. It's thick but not souffle type, went well with the butter and syrup. Honestly I'd normally think nothing of the food here but for some reason, it just works. It really feels like your transported back to the 70's and the whole experience becomes special because of that. The coffee was definitely a stand out though. I just had the standard issue one with the set and I was immediately surprised by it. It tastes like any other "premium" Japanese canned coffee but the clarity and aroma is on another level. I'm comparing it to canned coffee because Japan has this common balanced flavor profile to most mass produced coffee, and this tastes just like that but super fresh and with the intensity turned up. This alone will have me coming back to try more of the coffee that they offer here. So if you love coffee, Cafe Sunshine is a must visit. While the food options are limited, it is worth trying for the old school taste. Overall, the retro experience here is uniquely special, memorable and affordable.

Little tricky to find but SO yummy. We enjoyed the hot cakes, pizza toast, and mixed egg sandwiches. The photos speak for themselves. Highly recommend for a breakfast in Osaka! By 9:30 AM line became much longer, we waited 15 min at 9 AM.

Definitely a bit hard to find. The new location doesn’t match the pictures online but google maps does a decent job directing. It’s in the basement (B2) so make sure to look for some stairs/escalators to head down. The vibe of the cafe is also very homey and warm, but fairly small, so don’t expect to fit big groups. The staff are very friendly and offer a full english and chinese menu for foreign guests. I went around 10:30 and was seated pretty much immediately. However, when I left around 11, there was a line of about 5-6 people so choose your timing carefully. The food and coffee were both well made and tasty!! I got the egg sandwich set with an iced coffee and it was very yummy. They also have a number of little trinkets (e.g. hand towels, stickers) you can also buy at the register.

A traditional cafe can keep up with modern standard while maintain its character. The coffee and pancake are exceptional and sold in a fair price.

This was such a cute little cafe. It was a bit tricky to find, but once we found it we loved it so much we came two days in a row. If you come after 9.30am be prepared to have a bit of a wait to be seated to a table. They cafe sells traditional Japanese breaky. We LOVED the hotcakes. I could eat them every day. The coffee was amazing!!! They roast their own coffee beans

Google
I find everything about this cafe just lovely. The vintage vibe is exactly what I expected it to be. The staff is so polite and friendly. Everyone is patient and kind. There can be a long queue outside so make sure to ask before entering in order not to appear rude. The only downside is the hot cake (pancake) in that it’s authentically traditional which means it’s plain and uninteresting. But that’s probably why people hype about it so much 🤨

Had a calm and delicious breakfast here. Enjoyed the blend of the day immensely. Ard 9.30am a queue starts forming- just follow the instructions at the door. Would wait for a nice cuppa. Pictured is the amikoko (like a warm hug!)

Google
Hidden treasure located at corner of a building , serves Japan transition cafe style breakfast - pale ale, sandwiches, toast, simple but each item we ordered are very satisfying. It’s pretty crowded on a Friday morning, with people from all age groups, morning coffee, chatting , newspaper. We didn’t quite figure out the pricing- as we were a bit lazy to check out, a breakfast tea pot seems to be more expensive than the coffee with sandwiches set, but all reasonable price and good quality

Yelp
Great place to grab some breakfast. The service was very friendly. The food was good. they do have a variety of coffee to try. On the lower level, it is a bit confusing to find.

Yelp
Wish i would of checked yelp before heading here Though highly rated on google this place seems overpriced for what you get (in Japan). 4000 yen for three and I'm pretty sure we are all still hungry Pancakes were fine but unremarkable Service was fine Definitely the first time in Japan i felt like i didn't get a lot of value

Yelp
This is more a breakfast place for locals. We ordered the pancakes and omelette/rice. The restaurant is located at the basement of Umeda station. We came here because its close to our hotel. It's named as 'Sunshine' on google map but you couldn't find it unless you can read Japanese. Only way is to use the 'force' or ask somebody if you can't read Japanese. Friendly service but spoke little english. They forgot our coffee and pancake order and we had to remind them. However, I do want to keep in mind the language barrier, and give them the benefit of a doubt that it was just a simple miscommunication. Food is decent but took a little longer to come out than other restaurants.
