We stayed the night in Lyon, driving from Paris to St. Tropez. We were lucky enough to find Cafe Terroir on the Michelin Guide website and made the reservation before our trip. Our experience here was wonderful.
The restaurant is small and the decor is rustic and on the darker side. We were sat at a wooden table in the center of the restaurant. It felt totally appropriate for the overall vibe of Lyon.
On communication, my partner and the kiddo both speak French, but I do not. This confused a lot of folks on our trip, as they don't expect to see the blank look on my face when they speak to me in French, after having just interacted with a native speaker. While most of the staff spoke with my partner in French so that I didn't understand what was happening or being conveyed, one staff member spoke to me in English, which I really appreciated because it made me feel less left out of the dining experience. It felt like a true act of kindness. To be clear, I don't go to restaurants in a foreign country and ding them if they don't speak any English there. I just wanted to note that it meant something to me that one of the servers noted our situation and made the effort to make me feel comfortable. Overall, the service was excellent and attentive as you'd expect from a restaurant of this caliber.
Okay-onto the food. Oh the food! We started out with the soft boiled egg with cheese and bread and escargot. The escargot was very good. The kiddo ordered the soft boiled egg, said it was "so good," and sadly refused to share any of it with us. Needless to say, this is probably something you want to order.
My partner and the kiddo shared the steak for two. Fortunately, they shared this one with me. This dish really was the star of the show. The steak had a depth of flavor I have not experienced before. Truly. There was something very special about this steak. I had the salmon dish, with a butter sauce and a stuffed squash blossom. This dish was perfectly cooked and flavorful, but the steak was so good it overshadowed what was otherwise an excellent dish.
We ordered coffee after dinner and the ice cream. Oh wow. Order the ice cream for dessert. Do not miss this dish! The dish comes with dollops of a variety of ice cream flavors -the chef's choice. There was vanilla, and coffee flavor and a speculoos like flavor, among a number of others. They were so good-if I didn't have to avoid dairy, I would have ordered it myself.
You cannot go wrong dining here when in Lyon. I'd absolutely come back for a visit.
