The Best Restaurants in NDG (Notre-Dame-de-Grace) | Eater Montreal

"What started as a cozy, friendly neighbourhood café with hanging greenery and Persian treats has since grown into a cultural gathering spot, with a full menu of hearty traditional Iranian dishes and multi-coloured beverages. Warm up with soups or stews, cool down with rose water and saffron, or fill up with thick eggplant or yogurt dips." - Erik Leijon

We had lunch at this café and really enjoyed it. The coolest part was the unique main dishes on the menu. Even as a persian, it was my first time trying Gham-bar Polo Shirazi, and I loved the slightly sweet taste. Gheimeh Nesar was another great choice. The main dishes also come with a small yogurt on the side.

We were at Toranj last night to celebrate Yalda. The food was perfect. The fesenjoon, albaloo polo, ghanbar polo, and aash were delicious—just like homemade cooking. The staff are truly kind and joyful, and they do their work with love. I really appreciate it. I wish I lived nearby so I could come every day.

Absolutely delicious food! The flavors were rich and authentic, and everything was so fresh. The saffron cake was incredibly moist and full of flavor — paired perfectly with the tea. The service was also wonderful — warm, attentive, and welcoming. Toranj is a great spot for anyone craving quality Persian cuisine. Highly recommend!

I come here quite often, and it’s always great! Their Ghambar polo and Albaloo Polo are my favorites. so delicious and full of flavor. The food tastes really authentic, and the staff are always friendly. Definitely one of my go-to Iranian restaurants!

Amazing place. I've tried many Persian restaurants in Toronto and Halifax but this place is something else. They offer Amazing authentic persian food that are rare to find. Great presentation and refreshing authentic drinks. Highly suggested.

Google
Omlet Date was excellent. The Nashtaei 3 came with Bandari, which was a great choice. The customer service was polite and friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy and warm. They offer two types of cake; that’s a must-try.

Pretty Iranian café. The service was attentive and friendly. I had the hot breakfast #1 and the quantity of food was very generous. It’s priced right in my opinion and the flavors were great. Ambiance was decent, Iranian music played in the background. I recommend.

Very nice staff. Cozy atmosphere. We ate the number 2. It was delicious! I would definitely go back! Tea was amazing! The sausage omelette was not what i had expected. I wouldn’t recommend the omelette.

Yelp
Perfection in the form of a restaurant. Double up on Persian standards and etiquette while you're here just make sure not to be me and date a Persian girl or try to because I'm right in every way. I love the service the ambiance the dishes. I love it all except I'm the one who goes back home and lives in Paradise. I even have my family name tattooed on my face. Thank you Persian ladies for absolutely nothing. Love you Mom. -Farnaz and Farbod ps this place is brilliant could it be ..

Yelp
We stopped by for lunch and the food was absolutely delicious! We got the platter with 5 stews and it was plenty of food for two people. The rice was cooked perfectly and the stews were great! My favorite was the Gheimeh. Highly recommend! The service was great and the ambiance was fantastic.

Yelp
We were four friends getting together for a long overdue brunch. The food was delicious in that way where you can be totally happy with your menu choice but you still kind of wish you could have what your friends ordered too. One friend got there late and consequently ordered long after our - and other - tables had put in their requests. The server correctly predicted that our friend's meal would arrive long after we would receive ours so he offered the opportunity to change the order to something less time-consuming to make. I thought that was a very thoughtful thing to do, so props to the staff for their proactive offer. We all had a great time, chatting and noshing as friends do. I had and totally recommend the Nashtaei #3 - a sausage & tomato stew served with yummy saffron-coloured potatoes, eggs, pickles, and other yums. The Melrose platter across the table from me looked pretty amazing too. Maybe I'll try that dish next.

Yelp
Lovely Iranian cafe/restaurant with a wide menu for all meals, includes brunch section and traditional Iranian dishes for all dietary requirements. The vegan platter puts many brunch places to shame, and if I'm permitted to rant on this app is that the worst thing a restaurant can do is to serve chia pudding and oatmeal as the only vegan brunch option on a menu that's full of stacks of pancakes, eggs and sausages. Those places need to quickly adapt and learn from these cultures who have made satisfying meals from veggies for centuries.

Yelp
The worst service I have ever seen in any restaurant. We waited for more than an hour before we were served, and that too after multiple reminders. In the meantime, almost every table with guests who had arrived after us was served. We really felt unwelcome at this restaurant - will never go back there again.

Iftekhar A.

Yelp
We have been waiting for almost an hour and still didn't get our food. People around us who came much later were served who had much bigger orders. All thumbs down

Yelp
Gave this place a try 3x and all three were super disappointing. 2 stars for ambiance since it's cozy and cute. The drinks are pretty good. Nice variety of teas and Persian drinks. The food was never fresh and lacked authenticity. Huge disappointment even with trying various things on the menu. Service was okay, pretty slow.

Yelp
Amazing for breakfast. Or any other time of the day you can get the breakfast tray. Enjoyed every bite Server was lively & very patient with our picky group:)

Yelp
A charming little coffee shop that serves exceptional Chai tea! Decorated very cutely and makes you feel at home. The service is good too :) I would definitely suggest the Chai tea with cardamum, rose flowers, cinnamon. It's very warming, yummy and smells wonderful too.

Yelp
About a week ago I ordered a meal from this restaurant via Uber Eats. The first meal order arrived and the bag was so soaked in grease and oil that it fell apart on the sidewalk. the entire meal was ruined (i have a photo). I wasn't sure if the order was mishandled or what the issue was so I reordered the food and got a refund for the first order. The second order arrived in even worse state! It was swimming in oil and once again it didn't even make it from the car to my doorstep. Considering the pricing, this is unforgivable. I think this restaurant needs to take a step back and rethink its process.

Yelp
Met family here on a day trip into the city Definitely different! Haven't had too much Persian food. Seems like mostly coffee shop atmosphere during the daytime with a few larger groups there in evening. You order at the counter, menus are chalkboard. Our group had 5 people and ordered some sampler platters. The staff knew that we hadn't been there but still didn't explain what the dishes were when they brought the food out. We had ordered 2 meat and 2 veggie but honestly I couldn't taste anything that resembled meat in any of the dishes. We still had a lovely time and would really recommend this place more for coffee and tea than food.

Yelp
Our preconceived notion was that we were going out to eat Middle Eastern food with souvlaki, baklava, hummus, etc. That notion was entirely out in left field! The food that we ended up getting was very, very different than what we were used to. It looked very pretty and there was an abundance of it, but I must say that the four of us left food uneaten. Guess Persian food is a lot different than Middle Eastern food. The service was good, but I would have liked it better if they explained what was in the food. For instance, the protein sampler platter had something that didn't look anything like meat, but we were told it was ground beef. There was some sort of sweet jam. It tasted good, but I would have preferred to know what I was eating. There was a white soup, it had a sweet taste to it, but was slimy. Again, I didn't know what I was eating. I don't think I would return to this restaurant next time we visit Montreal. There was a birthday celebration during our visit. That was a lot of fun!

Yelp
Never had Persian food before but willing to try different things. Service was excellent and the server was very knowledgeable about the food and was spot on with suggestions. Really enjoyed the different flavors and preparation. presentation was great as well. The sidewalk (covered and low level fencing) service was delightful

Yelp
My first experience here (pre-pandemic) was *wonderful*. When we went to order, the server offered to explain several of the dishes to us (no Persians / people familiar with Persian food in our group) and recommended we try one of the platters with several small dishes. Many were delicious! For other first-timers, I would recommend this approach. I have gone back later and ordered a stew, but it wasn't to my taste. Better to get acquainted in small doses first til you know what you're ordering, in my experience here. Or start with breakfast or tea -- their selection is expansive and everything I have tried is delicious. I really appreciate the atmosphere -- dark inside but with big bright windows onto the street and colourful accents on the walls. It's family-friendly and there are games (chess, etc.) available to play while you eat and drink.

Yelp
GREAT RESTAURANT. Get the $25 vegetarian meal, it comes with five dishes and bread - perfect to share. Service is prompt and great. Nothing to complain about. I got their saffron drink and it was very fragrant.

Yelp
I love discovering artistic, cultural, independent cafes and Toranj is now definitely towards the top of my favourites list. From the outside, I did not expect such a large beautiful interior so I was pleasantly surprised. The interior is gorgeous; with a mighty green wall and hanging planters which complement the rustic furniture and modern accents perfectly. The menu has a lot to choose from, especially for vegetarians. The Persian breakfast in particular looked extremely tempting however, we were there a little after lunchtime and felt like something lighter. Despite not being on the menu, I asked for Kashke Bademjan (an exquisite Persian dish made with aubergine, onions and yoghurt) - to my surprise, they had some available. Choosing a drink was the hardest part, with so much variety and an expansive tea menu, we played it safe and ordered a pot of our favourite Persian mint tea. Dessert however was much easier, as though everything looked super appealing, I had my eye on the pillowy golden saffron cake topped with pistachios and dried rose petals the moment I walked in. Needless to say, everything was delicious and very authentic. The best part was the presentation; dishes were served on beautiful copper trays, naan bread wrapped in a tapestry cloth and a floral china teapot for the mint tea. The staff were very polite and prices are OK. Overall, loved everything about Café Toranj and discovering that they frequently hold poetry nights, know that I will definitely be returning soon!

Yelp
AMAZING. The food is delicious and the price good for the quantity. I order natasha 2 (veg) it comes in big metallic beautiful tray that has a eggs with red Persian sauce , side of the most delicious mashed potatoes i have ever taste topped with some crunchy stuff , side of lentils, side of fresh fruits and small side of saffron rice budding topped with cinnamon. I also got mint and rose herbal tea . honestly it's not like any other tea you can get from the supermarket. Plus they serve the tea in a pot with a candle to keep it hot . The atmosphere is so calm it makes you feel like you are in a green garden with lots of natural light. The service was great the welcoming and the staff explain the menu in English too .

Yelp
This place caught my eye while passing by and I knew it was love at first sight. I am happy that this establishment exists to bring traditional Iranian foods and desserts in a cafe setting. There were items I have never heard of and I am excited to try them all out.

Yelp
Great little spot in NDG serving up Turkish coffee & so many different types of tea. They also serve food and dessert items. We came here as a group of four and tried the Toranj tea which was delicious , it comes with a little flower bud inside of each cup. The set of cups and kettles they bring you is adorable and really adds a nice touch. We also tried their vegetarian platter & their protein platter to share as well as a dessert item whose name I can't recall ( circles stuffed with nuts & dates ) but I do remember it tasted great ! Not too sweet but still enough to satisfy a sweet tooth. The server had to explain to us what was on each platter but everything was really tasty without being overpowering. And the platters cAme with fresh warm flatbread to dip ! the prices are fair and the location is cozy and pretty ! Lots of light wood and greenery. great place to come by for tea coffee and some bites to eat.

Yelp
Lovely spot in NDG. The staff are warm and welcoming, and the teas are what you'd expect from a middle eastern joint. Lots of herbal and caffeinated options served with a rose bud. You can get a predetermined mix or mix your own tea pot. And obviously the dish ware is gorgeous. I haven't tried the food yet so that's next on my list.

Yelp
I'm a tea lover - this is a nice little place to grab a cup.

Yelp
If you love tea and you love a great tea experience please go to Café Toranj. You get a clear tea pot on a tea warmer in a lovely dish with a small set of sugar cubes. Everything is beautiful and everything tastes great. Plants decorate the establishment and the service is sincere and kind.

Yelp
Food was so tasty with beautiful presentation. Tea was so refreshing. Great restaurant. Will definitely go back again.

Yelp
Not worth the price, very little food provided and not very tasty. Meals were slightly cold. Service can take a little while. Staff was polite though.

Yelp
Best new cafe for tea! If you are a tea connoisseur (imported from Iran) and enjoy relaxing coffee shops and nice outdoor patios, come here. The owners are very warm. Service was quick with wonderful ambience of the cafe.

Yelp
Incredible selection of teas, well worth trying. The cafe is very cute with plant decor adding a really cool vibe. The Americano coffee is super. A great place to join a friend, go on a date, read a book or do some work. Highly highly recommend.
