The Coffee Shops Around D.C., According to Eater Editors | Eater DC

"Café Unido’s first D.C. outpost in Latin market La Cosecha, is the first U.S. location of a Panamanian coffee chain. Founders Benito Bermudez and Mario Castrellon — a chef with a place on San Pellegrino’s list of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants — source beans directly from growers in Panama and donate a percentage of their sales to social and environmental projects. The expanded cafe in Shaw includes a full breakfast and lunch menu by Panamanian chef Jovana Urriola, including a bacon, kidney beans, and crispy rice filled breakfast wrap and pork belly sandwich. Its beans can also be found at Nativo, the Square food hall’s new Latin-leaning coffee stall." - Tierney Plumb

Drink quality is never consistent. When I decide to risk it here, it might be really good, or something that's 1/3 foam and tastes like steamed milk. Not sure how long I'll keep trying. They offer interesting flavors and the atmosphere is nice, but none of that matters when the coffee is that off. If it's 8+ dollars for a drink it better be damn good. My advice is taste first, tip after with cash

Google
We ordered the speciality lattes - orange raspadura and vanilla bean. Super delicious and quality flavors. Would definitely recommend! There was a long line but it went by very quickly. So don’t let the line stop you from trying this delicious coffee! There is plenty of seating in the market and outside.

It’s hard to find great baristas with a chill and welcoming vibe! They are consistent every time and have great vibes!

Google
We came here more than once, and we loved the coffee. Also, their orange special is delicious. That said, we went there today, and we didn't appreciate that we had been charged for the non dairy milk when they were running out of the dairy one.

Google
I go to coffee shops for the actual coffee, not just vibes, although those are an added plus, and this coffee is so good! I had an iced latte with their homemade orange peel syrup and it was so fresh and bright with the espresso! They don’t cover up the coffee or versatile flavors with an abundance of sugar, but everything is so perfectly balanced, and they know how to make good coffee! I wish I lived closer to the area, but this shop is a great choice for coffee enthusiasts!

I went in on 4th of July for the first time and tried an iced la banda (lavender) cappuccino at the awesome Robin's suggestion. It was creamy and perfect for the summer day, and Robin was so kind! I took my friend back the next day and we got an iced cortado, an iced orange despadura, and an iced.. vanilla latte! Yeah. Another customer suggested adding mocha to the orange, and it was HEAVENLY. I was skeptical of orange in coffee, but no, I was wrong! There's a reason why the despadura is the most popular drink! The other baristas are equally nice, and I just like the vibe there in general. We found a nice place to sit outside. I think the only suggestion I'd give is to make the coffee display in the center of the shop a bit smaller so people can get around it more easily. Unido is so cool. ☕️🌸

Google
Small location but still great quality and strong coffee aroma. You can work from here.

Google
Really good coffee. The space is really cute and sort of sets it apart from the rest of La Cosecha. Love the neutral tones with old rustic tiling. They have this Geisha coffee which is 11/12 for a super floral coffee that is a Panama specialty according to the barista. I'd definitely come with others to order that. I got an Americano, that was small for the price imo. It's just one shot of espresso, but really good.

Yelp
Great find and the perfect coffee spot for the hard to please, indiscriminant coffee lovers out there in the DMV! I stumbled on this place while riding past the Union Market neighborhood the other day, badly in need of coffee. And, so glad I did. I was completely impressed with the coffee products sold here at Unido. Also, I'd argue this is probably the best place in DC for coffee, if you're into single-source and specialty coffee brews. As a first timer, I was greeted by a Barista named Louis. This guy really knew his coffee and explained the concept of the coffee products in the store. During this time, I learned that the source of the coffee products sold were from Panama in which to be frank, I had no clue that Panama even had a global coffee presence. So out of curiosity, I was interested in trying their coffee to compare my thoughts of what they had to offer to other DC coffee 'Likes' around the city such as Sidamo, Blue Bottle Coffee, Kaldi's, Compass Coffee, La Colombe, Starbucks, and even Dunkin'! Yeah, I know....doesn't take much to outperform the latter....lol. At any rate, this place won me over. I was blown away by the flavor and taste of Unido and their Panamanian coffee. In the store, I tried a Geisha Pourover. The attention to detail, the presentation of the coffee, the ceramic cup all added to a great cup of coffee and ultimately my coffee pleasure. And the coffee itself, was delicious and perfectly brewed with a flavor profile that was nutty and chocolate. I like my coffee black and this one was perfect. I also tried an Iced Americano, at the recommendation of the Barista "to-go." The iced coffee was so rich, smooth, and full of an earthy --lite caramel flavor; which speaks to the care and quality of the beans that goes into making a cup. He added a shot of Ghirardelli dark chocolate that took this cup to the next level. In all, a great find. The vibe and atmosphere is chill and relaxing. Louis, the staff member there was knowledgeable and friendly, offering great suggestions for drinks to try. If you haven't been, I would recommend Unido....it's certainly worth a stop when in the Union Market neighborhood!

Yelp
One of my favorite cafes in the city. The la Banda syrup is so good. Always love their cappuccino or iced latte. & love the empanadas!!

Yelp
I am steadily working my way through Unido's menu, and I love this cafe so much that I bought their branded insulated mug, and use it every day! If there is a wait/line, it's worth it to try some truly educational and exclusive Panama coffee. There's something for everyone's tastes and as a daily tea drinker I appreciate their high quality selection. Tip: Make sure to stop inside La Cosecha (or Union Market) for delicious Venezuelan pastries from 300 Grados Bakery.

Yelp
I had been wanting to try Café Unido since I visited Panamá last year (and didn't get the chance because we were late for our flight!). Recently, I got to visit their shop in DC (which is inside La Cosecha, a contemporary Latin American marketplace, self-described as a culinary embassy). I probably got one of the most basic things in the menu, a cold brew, but it was one of the best cold brews I've had in my life. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the DC area. TIP: Plan to be there for a few hours so you can try out several of the many food stalls!

Yelp
I had two different coffee drinks from here over the course of the day and both of them were very well crafted. They have a smooth and bold espresso that the barista pulled amazingly. Try the straight up espresso and the machiatto.

Yelp
Review for coffee only. Location near Union Market. This might be the best coffee I've had in DC thus far, and I've tried a lot of coffee. It's so good! No sweetener or flavor needed!! How we if you do want flavors, they have them! I like the oat latte. I've tried iced and hot and they're both divine!!! And there's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, or you can take your coffee and walk around the lively union market area. I've ordered coffee here 3 times now and love it each time. I will of course definitely be back!

Yelp
Came here to try their coffee as I was taking a walk through La Consecha hall last year. The weather at that time was perfect as well and they had the garage windows up. I decided to go with the special, La Banda Cafe and not sure what was in it, but it was amazingly good. I took my recommendation for the barista at the time. I took a seat near the window as it was a beautiful day. I pulled out my laptop and began to work an just enjoy the gorgeous weather. It's a very small area to lounge and hang out, but the best seat was sitting near the open window. A great place to people watch while sipping on a latte. Today is my second time I here and I ordered the iced vanilla latte. It tasted so good and refreshing. I saw a sign that they make their own syrups, so I take comfort in knowing there aren't any extra preservatives. I made my way upstairs to the loft area of La Consecha to do some work on my laptop. The barista on my first visit had told me that the upstairs is a hidden gem and that working up there is perfect. He was oh so right! Thank you so much for the recommendation. There's street parking and a parking garage on the backside of La Cosecha, so you'll definitely have options to park your car.

Yelp
Located by Union Market, Cafe Unido is a nice stop for coffee if you're doing some shopping/eating. It's located inside a market with some other really good food options to compliment your coffee. I got a Orange Raspadura iced (even though it's cold outside, it's always iced coffee season). I love coffee that's slightly sweet but not too sugary and this coffee did a good job of that! It tastes like vanilla/cinnamon with a hint of orange and was a nice pick me up this Saturday afternoon.

Koco E.

Yelp
Poor experience. The only enjoyable thing about this place was the scenery and ability to sit down and get work done. The cookie I ate was hard and expired and my iced chai lacked a lot of flavor. The service was nothing special and I paid about $12 for a cookie and a drink. I will not be going and probably won't recommend to anyone either.

Yelp
Unido in La Cosecha of Union Market, DC, holds a special place in my heart, especially as someone who frequently travels from California to the area. In my quest for coffee that reminds me of home, Unido stands out as the closest thing to a 5-star coffee experience in DC. The coffee is strong and offers plenty of exciting options. The staff is top-notch, and the location is absolutely fantastic. It's situated near other great stores and restaurants, making it a hub of activity. What's even more remarkable is that you can actually find parking, a rarity in many places. Plus, it's conveniently close to the red line train. One of my favorite aspects of Unido is their cold brew; it's a delightful pick-me-up that I can't get enough of. The vibe in the café is always welcoming, and I'm a big fan of their merch - I'll probably pick up a mug as a keepsake when my travels to DC come to an end. The outdoor patio is a lively spot, and the La Cosecha market always has fantastic music playing. It's a place filled with great memories for me, and as I write this, I'm tempted to make the 20-minute walk to grab a cup of coffee there right now. On a morning like today, I can't think of a better place to recommend. Unido in La Cosecha of Union Market has all the elements of a top-notch coffee spot: exceptional coffee, a great atmosphere, and an all-around enjoyable experience.

Yelp
Coffee Lovers Tap In!! Cafe UNIDO is a spot you should try! My friend raved about their Vanilla Lattes so I had this place on my mind to try... The Coffee shop is located in the Union Market / Florida Ave area in the market called La Cosecha. I ordered an Iced Vanilla Latte and it was amazing! Coffee notes were fruity and light and the coffee was creamy which I love. If you prefer light, fruity, creamy coffee beverages head over and try this place out. FYI: They also serve a handful of bakery items (which appear to be catered by nearby bakeries).

Yelp
My monkey bread was delicious- not too sweet and not too dry, and my matcha latte was nicely balanced. My husband really enjoyed his fermented coffee too. The barista was clearly very knowledgeable in coffee which was helpful when we asked questions about the different options (fermented or not etc). Unfortunately when I had a simple issue with the Wi-Fi he was not helpful at all. I would have really appreciated it if he just have taken a second to try to troubleshoot by asking if I received the popup signin, especially since the cafe was empty, but instead he brusquely just said "oh if you can't get on the Wi-Fi, I have nothing to do with that", but I realize it's the Wi-Fi for the entire building and not just Cafe Unido, so I should give him a pass.

Yelp
Update with the photo. Orange raspadura is such a fun treat and it's good hot or iced. Still have yet to order anything else lol.
google avatar

Otniel L.

Yelp
I made a quick stop here after having several delicious snacks at the Union Market. I was contemplating on whether to have a single espresso or a matcha latte and decided on the latter. I ordered a matcha latte with oat milk and they unfortunately didn't have oat milk. This was a bummer for me because that's really the only milk substitute I use. I'm not sure if they don't carry oat milk or if it was just this particular day. They did have almond milk and I went for that as the alternative. The matcha latte was bold, creamy and flavorful. It also gave me a nice little jolt of energy which I needed after stuffing my face at other local eateries. The staff - which was one lady on this occasion was friendly, helpful and quickly made my order. I will come here again and press them on whether they have oat milk, lol! -ODL Connect with me! Yelp
If you're looking for great coffee while in DC, then head over to Cafe Unido at the La Cosecha Union Market. Great service, cool vibe, and I ordered one of the best cold brew coffees I've ever tasted! Highly recommend checking this place out!

Yelp
During my visit to Cafe Unido at Union Market, I was thoroughly impressed by the exceptional quality of their coffee. Their Spiced Manzana Latte, in particular, was a standout for me. The balance of flavors was perfect, I appreciated the unique blend of apple and spices. The coffee as a whole was rich, smooth, and full of flavor, indicative of the care and high-quality beans that went into every cup. I also found the atmosphere of the cafe to be warm and inviting, and the staff was knowledgeable and friendly, offering great suggestions for other drinks to try. Overall, I highly recommend Cafe Unido to anyone looking for an excellent cup of coffee. The Spiced Manzana Latte was certainly a highlight for me, and I look forward to visiting again and exploring more of their menu.

Yelp
I'm a regular here and Mari is my favorite barista. I've been coming here for over a year and I typically get either a vanilla latte iced or hot, or a chai tea latte, both with oat milk. It never disappoints and I love that I get rewards so occasionally I will get a free drink. 10/10 Definitely recommend!

Yelp
This coffee roaster brings the flavor of Panama, to Union Market. Conveniently located right outside the front door of our apartment building, and right in the perfectly sunny east side of the La Cosecha market, this is a great local coffee shop. I really liked the coffee. I think it's one of the best in the Union Market area. However, it would be awesome to have something healthy to eat for breakfast, to have with the coffee. I got some delicious chicken empanadas. But I was craving something with egg, at that time of morning, on a Sunday.
google avatar

Yelp
The barista was really nice and helpful when I stopped by early afternoon. I was interested in trying the orange raspadura latte and asked her what does it taste like. She explained what goes into the drink and that she recommends it iced with oat milk. I don't remember everything she mentioned, but I recall mentioning of orange peel and vanilla sugar. I went with her recommendation and was so glad I did. Don't be surprised to find a couple of orange peel shavings at the bottom of your drink! I didn't think I would like the orange with coffee, but was pleasantly surprised. I also prefer a less sweet drink, and this was perfect without any modifications/requests. Happy to find another good cafe option in NoMa.

Yelp
Hello to our new favorite coffee shop! Located at La Cosecha, Cafe Unido is a Panama City based roastery that is serving up rich, soul warming coffee drinks to District residents. All coffee is sourced from the best farms in Panama and is responsibly sourced. During COVID times, they are vending from a walk-up window. Our barista was friendly and thorough and we were rewarded with a cup of coffee that immediately made us go "Woah!" I'd love to go back for a coffee cupping and to try their Gesha blend which is apparently made with the most expensive coffee bean in the world. If the weather is nice, there is plenty of comfortable seating (with heaters!) in front of La Cosecha to enjoy your drink.
google avatar

Annie R.

Yelp
Their iced matcha latte with oat like was good! I also got it with pumps of vanilla to make it a tad sweeter Bc some matcha can be real bold. I would def go again! Good service as well.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
5 stars for the orange iced latte - delicious, not to sweet, perfect hint of orange flavor accomplished through fresh zest. 2-3 stars though for the food, the empanadas were sad and the ham and cheese croissant had some textural issues and was overly salty. Will come back for coffee and avoid pastries in the future

Yelp
If you were to visit Panama City, Panama, you may find Cafe Unido shops throughout the city. Stumbling upon one in Washington, D.C. is surprising, but today's reality. The first Cafe Unido outside of Panama is in La Cosecha, a Latin American food hall and market, near Union Market in Washington, D.C. Here's why you should visit: 1) Coffee: If you like Central American coffee, this is your spot. The beans are sustainably grown and Cafe Unido returns a portion of sales back to the farm communities. The beans are then roasted and beautifully brewed. My house ordered an espresso, a decaf flat white and a vanilla latte. Each eas perfectly crafted and turned us into Cafe Unido advocates. Note: They have decaf options. If you want what is considered the most expensive coffee variety in the world, order the $14 cup of geisha coffee. 2) Space: With the pandemic, they opened their cafe window to allow for contactless coffee pickup. Outside, there are tables and chairs for seating. The only thing to note is the prices may seem a little steep. My vanilla latte was $5 compared to lattes nearby at Peregrine. However, for quality coffee, it's worth it.

Yelp
Such a shame because the coffee is really good but the employees aren't the nicest--I'm specifically talking about the short chubby brunette barista girl. On one occasion, I witnessed her being rude to a customer after making their drink wrong, the amount of times she rolled her eyes at having to fix the order made me wonder if her eyes were going to stay that way. But then when I went recently, I ordered an iced chai and asked for it to be light on the milk (since last time she barely put chai in and it was 90% milk). Her solution was to fill up my cup only halfway. When I asked her to put more milk in (I paid for the drink and wasn't going to walk away with a sad little cup) she gave me attitude and told me if I wanted less milk then I needed to pay for more chai and almost refused to pour me me milk. Take it from me lady - when you aren't the best barista at the shop, the least you could do is be polite to your customers.

Yelp
Came by for a quick coffee before heading to DC for some sightseeing. I got an iced vanilla latte and my bf got a shot of espresso. | Iced Latte - 4.50 | I was surprised how much I liked this latte! I saw her pouring the milk in and I got scared at how much milk was going in bc I was worried it was going to taste too milky but it didn't. The coffee and vanilla flavors were still able to pop out and the sweetness level was perfect. It probably could have gone 2-3 tablespoons less of milk, but it was still a great latte. | Espresso Shot - 3.00 | Tried some of my bf's espresso shot and it was strong (as expected.) Definitely needed to chase with some water, which was also expected. I wasn't there when my bf ordered so I'm not sure if they offered water (we already had our own so we were fine), but definitely get some water with your shot if you don't already have some.

Yelp
Cafe Unido is located inside La Cosecha, the shared space near Union Market. The area has plenty of seating (indoor/outdoor) and a few restaurants and shops inside. The Orange Raspadura latte is so good! It has a slight citrus taste and not too sweet - very unique flavor that I'm always down to order again. The regular lattes are also above average when compared to other coffee shops. The service is great and the drinks always come out fairly quick. They offer a few pastries and milk alternatives if whole milk isn't your thing.

Yelp
Update. The people who work here suck. After waiting a very long time in their long line... Employee: "We're out of green tea" Me: "want to take it off the menu peg board (5 letters within easy reach) so people don't have to wait in a long line to find out?" Employee (in the most "I could give a sh*t tone"): "no, then I'll have to put it back up next week when we get more." Nice. She really made my day.
google avatar

Lia M.

Yelp
Cafe Unido had been on my list for a while and I finally made time to try it. It's in the gorgeous La Cosecha, which is always a bonus. I got the vanilla latte with almond milk and the vegan empanada. The latte was fantastic and not too sweet. I really enjoyed the empanada too. It's made from a yuca dough and is crisp and flavorful. Staff is friendly and I'm excited to return.
google avatar

Heidi M.

Yelp
Located inside La Cosecha, the coffee is good and perfect for a weekend grab and go while you shop the market. If you prefer to sit and drink, there is plenty of outdoor seating and some indoor space as well.

Yelp
This is not a self-standing coffee shop (at least this branch isn't) but rather a section within the big Union Market hall. (As an aside, it's amazing how Union Market has transformed and become a busy café and restaurant area! Just some 15 years ago it was a forlorn, slightly edgy-industrial space...I kinda liked it the old way :-) .... Anyway, back to Unido. It's a Panama-focused outfit, with all their coffee from there. Very hard to say anything about the touch-and-feel, since it's just a section of a wide hall. I had a cappuccino--it was tiny but delicious...shrinkflation!...and a scone.
google avatar

Saoimanu S.

Yelp
I ordered an iced latte with skim milk & a dash of cinnamon. I really like the coffee here. It's not too strong and it's smooth. Plus, the ambience in the market is relaxing and makes for a great spot to do some work or meet up with friends while you sip away.
google avatar

Pavel R.

Yelp
I heard a lot of great things about this place and was excited to try it, but my experience was very underwhelming. The service was very unfriendly. When I was ordering, I felt like they were doing me a favor taking my order. Ordered Cortado but got a cup of steamed milk. Asked for sugar in the raw but they did not have any. And all that for a $6. Not returning back.
google avatar

Priscilla T.

Yelp
Not bad! Our barista was nice and very knowledgeable. They knew what they were talking about and had good recommendations. I tried the iced Orange Raspadura Latte. It was unique and not too sweet. I enjoyed the flavor, but didn't like that I got chunks of powder at the end.
google avatar

Latifah A.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best coffee spots in the area! Not only is it located in vibrant La Cosecha, this Panamanian coffee shop takes great pride in their beans and roasting process. I encourage you to ask questions about the types of beans. They are so passionate and knowledgeable when explaining. Enjoy!
google avatar

Iris Z.

Yelp
I have been having UNIDO's at-home pour overs from dripkit. Specifically, I've always been a fan of their geisha coffee which is a fermented coffee that has fruity notes. I usually am not a fan of fruity coffees because they tend to be too acidic but their geisha coffees somehow perfectly nail the fruity taste without being too acidic. When I learned that unido opened their first USA store in DC I was so surprised! I went for their geisha coffee, which is one of the world's most expensive cups of coffee. It didn't disappoint. I love that such a niche product that was once so hard for me to get is now in DC!
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Food and coffee are fantastic but there's no policy for seating seniors or disabled when places are filled with young students and freelancers. Caveat emptor.
google avatar

Tay I.

Yelp
I didn't know what to order and the barista was nice and walked me through the different types of coffee, she was knowledgeable and polite, I ended up ordering the cappuccino and I'm so glad I did. The result was exquisite, exciting to the eye as to the palate, beautiful latte art. The atmosphere inside this coffee shop was very vibrant. I will definitely rate them a five-star. Truly amazing! Thank you so much Mari! I'm Definitely coming back for more!
google avatar

Tashi I.

Yelp
The orange flavor is not overpowering and compliments the coffee beautifully. Definitely recommend this flavor!
google avatar

Janette Y.

Yelp
One of the best lattes I've had. Manzana latte with apple cider, was worried it would be too sweet, but just perfect, subtly sweet, smooth as silk. Staff were super kind and friendly. Hit the spot with the tasty breakfast empanada. Absolutely delicious!

Jill W.

Yelp
Skip every other coffee shop in the region, this is the best. It takes time to pull great craft shots so if you're impatient, sure, go to a national chain that prioritizes speed and consistency and "customer service" over excellence.

Raiza M.

Yelp
Jose is the best! He goes out of his way to make sure my drink is perfection and always has the best conversation. I love interacting with him :)
google avatar

Raina K.

Yelp
The orange raspadura latte was really unique and tasted really good! I'd recommend the coffee spot for sure. The baristas were very nice too and the coffee was made really quick!

Yelp
Excellent service, AMAZING coffee. Best coffee shop in DC! Perfect place for a coffee date. Thank me later!

Yelp
I use to enjoy my experience here however the last few times the employees have been rude. Mary the manager especially!

Elena F.

Yelp
I usually love this coffee place ,but today March 1, it was 6.30 pm and the woman said: I can not make coffee for you, because we close at 7 pm, it's 30 min before you guys close and you don't make coffee? In This case you need to change your work hours, because I drove there to get my coffee, but got nothing...never saw this in my life!So disappointed!

Erin S.

Yelp
Incredible latte and good service. The iced orange raspadura latte had the perfect balance of orange and cinnamon without being sweet. Unlike anything I've ever tasted and I will definitely be coming back. This is a great place to visit if you want to have an enjoyable sensory experience, rather than a quick grab-and-go. There were 2 polite employees when I went and it seems like they put a lot of care into their work.

Bridgette F.

Yelp
I ordered a latte and the burger and fries at the Florida Ave location. I walked 0.1 miles to my apartment next door and the burger was cold and the bun was soggy and the fries were warm. Go figure. It could have been an excellent burger. Not sure how a burger eaten 5 minutes after it was brought to me can be cold. Not room temperature but cold...I hope they see this and rectify this because it's very convenient and could be amazing!

Yelp
I tried Cafe Unido at La Cosecha yesterday. My husband got an iced latte and I got an iced chai. Both drinks were great. The coffee was as good as I expected. In addition to our drinks we bought a bag of Geisha beans. Unfortunately, the barista was very rude with us. First she asked if we were sure we wanted the beans because they were $50...later she was like..."you know this are the whole beans" etc. I found her very rude and with a lot of prejudice. My husband was excited about a Café Unido in DC as he had frequented the one in Panama while working there for a whole year, but after our experience, we left we a bad taste...
