A Random Reddit Guy Buys Drinks for SF Bar-Goers - Eater SF

"Robot Business Review reports that robot barista startup Cafe X has expanded beyond its three SF locations to the San Jose International Airport, where it will serve coffee to Terminal B travelers. According to Café X, its automated workers 'address the pain points of a typical airport coffee experience' by 'making and serving more than 10 orders simultaneously within minutes.' It’s open from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and eventually plans 24-hour service, at least until the robots revolt." - Eve Batey

Google
Grabbed an Ube Latte and it was really good. Nice taste of ube and the coffee was fresh and flavorful. Neat watching the robot make your drink, and it's not expensive which was nice. Also fun to see the robot wave at people as they walk by when no drinks are being made. Will get it again!

Google
AWESOME. A COFFEE-MAKING ROBOT! it lets you choose the blend of coffee you want and dispenses it. The robot also does the cutest little waves. Coffee was surprisingly good albeit a little expensive at 7.25 but it didn’t ask for tip so it cancels out for a regular Californian price latte. it offers oatmilk as well! The matcha is great and tastes like actual matcha. 10/10 would recommend.

Google
In A Nutshell: -The automatic robot coffee barista at SFO in Terminal 3 is cool to watch. -However, the quality of the Americano was just meh. -You are definitely paying to watch the robot do it's thing, as well as watching it wave hello to you in-between orders. Overall, for a little over $6, you get an average coffee, but a cool robot show you can enjoy. P.S. Soon your job will be replaced by a robot like this in the near future!

Google
This was fun. A robot making my coffee. When I got to the kiosk the screen was locked up. I had to manually cancel out each part of a large order then it worked. There were 3 kiosks The menu is simple. I got a late. 6.5 but no tip. Had a bit of a hassle it wanted a first name and initial. Just setting up with initials did not work. The coffee was made and presented on the counter. When I accepted the drink the robot put it in the cube for me to take. You need to put on the top yourself and no pattern in the milk. It tasted a little cinomony like there was a little carry over from another drink. It's a fun novelty

Google
A cute small cafe in SFO airport terminal- which has a robot barista. You need to place order and pay online after scanning the QR code. Definitely it’s fun to watch the robotic arm preparing your drink. It’s quite fast- my iced Mocha ( with Ghirardelli dark chocolate) was great. I loved it, although it was a bit pricy that I must admit.

Google
This machine is terrible and I would give a 0 if I could. I bought the honey creme cold brew but the machine is out of coffee. So instead I got a cup of only milk and I paid $6.25 for it. Also, the cup is really messy because the empty hose is trying to fill coffee but it was empty. So instead, it was spraying droplets. I wanted to get a refund and the contact for Cafex was almost impossible to find. Zero support and still waiting for a reply for a refund. I was very angry and upset with what I got.

Google
The Theranos of coffee. They just put a bunch of different coffee machines in a box, and use a robotic arm to operate those machines. Literally the Theranos model. That might have been forgivable if it actually did it’s job—but it doesn’t. It brewed my drink and then put it down on the counter totally out of my reach. The family who ordered before me didn’t get their drink either—the robot apparently just threw their cup somewhere in the little booth. Save your money and go to one of the many coffee places around. Even if it manages to serve you, do you really want coffee from machines that don’t seem to be cleaned regularly?

Google
This is definitely an only in San Francisco experience for sure. Had a layover on the way to Reno. All the other coffee shops were closed, so why not? This coffee was incredible and made by a robot. Needless to say, it was an experience and I was happily surprised. Would recommend if you are flying through.

Yelp
Adorable lil robot barista that makes a variety of iced and hot drinks. Pricey? Yes. Convenient? Yes. Fun to watch? YES! If you're looking for high-quality, custom-tailored espresso, this is not for you. But if you're just looking for a pick-me-up at the airport while waiting for your flight to board, this is definitely a must-try experience -- at least once, just for the fun of it. The robot seems very efficient and my drink (BAYC banana cold brew) was delicious. When I picked up my order, the robot did a little 'happy' dance and it truly made my morning; my flight was delayed, I was hungry and cranky, but watching the robot work was delightful. I'm not sure how often the robot needs to be serviced, but do be aware the robot might not be available during their stated open hours. I probably waited around 30 minutes while the robot was being serviced (which wasn't a biggie since my flight was already delayed), but just FYI. Cafe X wouldn't necessarily be my go-to for airport coffee, but if no other place is open or I'm feeling bored, I'll definitely consider ordering from here again.

Yelp
This vending machine took my payment but did not dispense my order, making it both inefficient and unreliable at SFO Terminal 1. Many other customers have experienced the same issue, yet there is no clear way to contact customer support for assistance. This is unacceptable and reflects poor customer service. There needs to be a reliable method for customers to report and resolve such issues. If support is not accessible when problems arise, it creates a frustrating and unacceptable experience. I strongly recommend addressing this issue to prevent further inconvenience. I've attached photos below of 3 of my orders just sitting there while I received no drinks or refunds smh. SFO terminal 1

Yelp
Very good for a machine coffee maker and it's fun to watch the robot. Make your drink and hand it to you.
google avatar

Dilys S.

Yelp
Mr robot here is quite fancy, not only it serves hot and ice cold drinks (like matcha latte, BAYC limited (out of stock today), cafe au lait), it now has two pick up windows, can work on two drinks at the same time, there's a snack stand too, it even works the cold brew on tab. Kind of impressed. Though always love my real human barista, this is significant progress. The drinks here are 4-6+ dollars which i think is better than the vending machine that charges $5 for water

Yelp
This offers a unique experience where your drink is made by a robot. I ordered their lemonade and found it quite enjoyable. Admittedly, the prices are on the higher side (typical for an airport), but the novelty of having a robot make your drink makes it worth a try, especially if you're at the airport looking for something different. While I still prefer the personal touch of a human making my drinks and food, this is definitely an experience worth having, even if just once in a while.

Yelp
The future is here! A robot barista serves coffee and waves at you. Super cool concept. To order, you can use a tablet, or scan a QR code. It will make your drink immediately after the one before it. When your drink is ready, the screens will show your name. There's a side table with cup holders, straws, and lids if you need them. I got the Ghirardelli hot chocolate, and it tasted great! Overall, a bit overpriced for coffee / tea, but I'm pretty sure most people get it for the novelty. A lot of people do double-takes as they walk by.

Yelp
Had to try the coffee here after seeing a long line of people watching and filing the process. The booth is located right on the left hand side after security check in the United terminal. I was excited to see that they had a dirty matcha as it's my favorite drink to get an extra boost of caffeine with matcha in the morning. The matcha itself was pretty good but does come sweetened so I feel like it would have almost been too sweet without the espresso. The process is interesting and it does look like they grind the beans fresh but unlike other robot coffee machines, you can't see the process and only see the matcha/prepared espresso dispense. I have seen other machines in the past with more complicated settings that actually replicate the human process of grinding beans, tamping, etc. (e.g Artly).

Yelp
Stopped by the other day for coffee and noticed a robot coffee machine post security inside Terminal 1. Ordered via the QR code via my phone and my drink was carefully prepared by the robot. Surprisingly, the mocha was decent. The temperature was on the warmer side, there was a decent amount of foam and it was a touch on the sweeter side. With three tablets in front of the robot, service was quick and easy too!
google avatar

Raine B.

Yelp
It's a cool concept and super handy when there's no coffee shops that are open! The service took a bit longer than I expected though! I got an iced dirty matcha latte. The first few sips were okay, however I could not even drink half of it as it was too sweet? It was disappointing! I wish I could've gotten something instead. Later on, I saw someone working on it and restocking! I wouldn't recommend unless you're in a pinch.

Yelp
This was a cute experience and a welcome distraction from waiting for our connector flight. This robot has quite a bit of personality programmed into it, and even better, it makes a pretty darn good cappuccino, if you ask me! Of course, the real reason this exists is because it's becoming too expensive to pay a human to make coffee in San Francisco, amirite? But hey, if a machine can do the job better than some Starbucks employees I've encountered in recent visits, then I, for one, welcome our robot barista overlords!

Yelp
No humans. Owner is rude. He was on site servicing the unit. I had questions, he was edgy & unfriendly. Introverted chode apparently. Shame, he lost my business
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars I would. Drink did not dispense milk. Okay, tech issues happen I get that but when I reached out to customer service (which was challenging to find in itself) and then I was told that this coffee station isn't owned by them. They can't say who owns this CAFEX but apparently this robot cafe had NO way to file a concer or mistake. Avoid. Not worth it. Watch the robot mess up someone else's drink and save your money. I paid almost $7 for half a cup of coffee. Walked over to another coffee place and filled with half and half. The coffee was meh at best.

Rob G.

Yelp
Cool robot barista, some of the drinks were out of stock but the banana cold brew was great.
google avatar

Yelp
While I was waiting for my flight at SFO in the United terminal, I stopped by this cafe stall. Instead of a cafe that has a person who creates your drink, this futuristic cafe has a robotic arm serve you as your barista. I ordered a Matcha lemonade from the touch screen that sits on the front of the kiosk and shortly after I paid for my drink, the robot arm started to prepare it. It whirled around and shook the matcha like a bartender using a shaker, adding small flourishes here and there. In all the drink was $4-5 and tasted alright, but the whole "show" of the robot arm took a few more minutes than I would've liked. All in all, it was fun to experience once, but I don't think I'll order from it again. Back to my human baristas!
google avatar

Alyse H.

Yelp
I ordered a honey cream cold brew coffee and it was soooo terribly sweet. I wanted it to be less sweet and more strong coffee flavor. I figured the honey part would make it only mildly sweet, but that wasn't the case. Stick to black coffee here unless you want a sugar blast.

Yelp
Cafe X is just past security on the way to the F gates in Terminal 3. It was convenient as there was no line to order and I got my iced coffee (black no sugar which is my usual) a couple of minutes after ordering it on the iPad. There was a Peet's Coffee right across my gate (by F3) but there was a long line. You really can't do customizations in this cafe but the basics are offered like cappuccinos, lattes, and etc. Non dairy milks are also available. I only drink black coffee with no sweetener, so my iced coffee was perfect. They use Intelligentsia Coffee, so it had no bitterness and you really don't need milk or sugar to mask the bitterness. It was fun watching the robot make my coffee and do its little dance. Coffee is expensive but so is everything at the airport. If you're in a rush, this place is the way to go in the morning. The line at Peet's never seemed to end when I was waiting for my flight.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Don't you love robots..this such a great option that we decided to try it. What do you know it tasted great. Robots don't take vacation or complain. Such a novel idea.

J L.

Yelp
Banana cold brew was refreshing at SFO airport. Didn't want to have to wait in a long line to get coffee. It was pretty quick from start to finish.

Yelp
It's not Starbucks but fun too look at. Found this thing when walking from terminal 3 to the international terminal. And it's just too good to pass up. (The show not the end results) I mean I didn't know what I was looking at to begin with. Was it the toothpaste cap twister from Willie Wanka? Was it from Stark Enterprise's putting together an Iron Man suit? Was it a part from one of the Terminators left behind? Am I watching too many movies? Whatever this thing is, it puts on a show. It waves, moves to the beat of the music, and makes drinks. Order from one of two kiosks on either side of the robotic arm. Just like McDonald's or satellite city hall (I know you read that review) it's simple. Big pictures and descriptions will help influence your decision. And you can do some customization. Slide your CC, give a name for the order, and an email if you want a receipt. Then watch the show. I got two hot drinks and a pack of macaroons. My drinks were prettied watered down and I didn't know if there was any caffeine. But the kid gobbled up those macaroons. Overall four stars. I mean I just like the show. No coffee flavor means no five stars. Now excuse me, I'm heading to Peet's for a drink. M

Yelp
This coffee machine reminds me of home - they used to have one in the Metreon in SF, but since replaced it with coworking pods (boo). After returning from a trip to NYC I excited to see one; just feels like "robot coffee" is such a SF thing. I had a dirty matcha latte with oat milk (expensive - $7!) and decided to try some of the Miette (butter lemon) cookies out of curiosity. I've visited the Miette shops in the Ferry Building (SF) and Jack London Square (Oakland) so I wanted to compare. The matcha latte was great - not sure it's $7 great, but fun for the experience - and the cookies were delicious. Shortbread, so I'm sure they'll keep well. Cafe X is definitely not something I'd do every day, but certainly a place I'd take friends for the novelty factor.
google avatar

Jaden D.

Yelp
I had Cafe X before in the Stonestown location. But this location is broken and won't make drinks. Like another review said, it took my money for a matcha latte ($6.50) and then didn't do anything. There's also no information for if the robot doesn't work and how to get your refund, which is ridiculous. The ppl at Cafe X need to fix the robot at Terminal 3 already.
google avatar

Navin K.

Yelp
8 am on a Monday. Made it to SFO in time for my flight - in spite of bad traffic over the San Mateo bridge. Heading to the gate with minutes to spare. Would love a cup of coffee but the lInes at Peets are insane. What's this? A robot making coffee? A few touch pads. No one in line. Is this the digital revolution they're all talking about? $4.25 for a cappuccino - not bad. The ordering process - ridiculously quick and easy. Watching the robot make coffee - fascinating. My cappuccino - perfect! I heart you Cafe X.
google avatar

Yelp
I had an early morning flight from SFO. Of course during that time, there are long lines at every coffee shop which is a real bummer if you have to catch a flight soon. I decided not to get my morning coffee that day and I'm glad I did. I noticed some people filming a vending machine and I was like "why are people recording a vending machine???" I then saw the robotic arm brewing some coffee for someone and I was mildly impressed. I decided to give it a try since there was no line when I got there. I ordered a Dirty Matcha Latte. It was a bit overpriced at $6 but you're definitely paying for the experience with this.
google avatar

Mary T.

Yelp
I enjoyed this robot barista experience! It was fun to see how the robot shakes the drink and waves and easy to order on the touchscreen. I got the dirty matcha and thought it tasted pretty good, lightly sweet! The price is probably what you would expect at most coffee shops - expensive, but I appreciated the novelty. I was there early so there was no line. It was a happy drink to sip while getting the news my flight was delayed.

K Y.

Yelp
Made me a cold brew without the coffee and just gave half a glass of milk. No one answers at their phone number which is only given if you opt for email receipt. Got ahold of them on Instagram and they said they'd remake my drink, and that I just needed to message them. The following week when traveling again, I went back to this location. I messaged them on IG to get that free drink they promised me, only to be ghosted. Also saw another dude order and get half a drink, which he said tasted disgusting. Avoid this thing unless you want the novel experience of gambling that a robot can make your drink properly. Out of my 2 visits, I saw 1 out of 6 drinks get made properly.

Yelp
Months after Briggo opened up in the F gates in Terminal 3, a much cooler robotic coffee bar is now open by the E gates called Cafe X. Putting a twist on the old barista model, Cafe X is very futuristic in an area dominated by tech folks. I'm not at all surprised of this startup in Silicon Valley as we move more and more towards automation and leveraging technology for convenience, precision, consistency and quality. Cafe X serves three single-origin roasts, a blend, matcha lattes (dirty and masala matcha included) and cold brew. They even have oatmilk as a milk alternative! Customers place their orders through an app or one of the iPad stations in front of the kiosk. And then that's when the system goes to work. You'll see your drink is being made as well as see the update when your drink is ready. They give you a code (flashed on the screen) to key in the iPad to retrieve your drink. So cool right? They still have some glitches to fix (as you would expect from a startup). Like one day, I saw a spilled drink inside the machine that it had a domino effect on my drink not being made. I was on my way to get it but as soon as I got there, on my phone it advised me to speak with a Cafe X rep. And some of their codes don't actually work -_-
google avatar

Kristi C.

Yelp
Did not work. The juice was out and it gave me a glass with ice. There was no way to report a problem either at the kiosk or on their website. Use at own risk.
google avatar

Jay F.

Yelp
I REALLY wanted to give this more stars but 2 if being really generous and more for the novelty. Coffee was sub-par at best and not sure how old those beans where but actually ended up throwing my coffee away after 2 sips. Cool concept, bad execution..

Isean M.

Yelp
As my body was in desperate tremor of caffeine, this unique machinery appeared like a wish. I then ordered a iced mocha in attempt to satisfy the cells that lie within my tongue. Though the process the robot displayed was an experience, that did not stop the horrible event that would soon prey on my innocent self. I sucked the liquid "thing" into my mouth, only to be greeted by an unexpected taste. The coffee tasted, simply, the likes of a toddlers making. In short, black, cheap coffee. As an incoming coffee enthusiast, creations like these make me doubt future robot-dependent coffee shops. Why must I be forced to consume this effortless waste in order to make up for my money? Why must I have to prepare for the horrid consequences that will soon violate my bottom? Please consider my passage before experiencing this place

Joe Y.

Yelp
I ordered drip coffee. But it was long shot Americano, you can see it not taste good. If you serve this called drip, please describe clear. Thanks
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
Great automated coffee service at SFO! A variety of fun options, quick turnaround on orders and a "friendly" waving robot that makes drinks and greets guests with kind gestures. Unfortunately their snacks were empty during our visit and one guest complained that the milk level in her latte was low, but fortunate for me, I'm a straight-up Americano fan so my bevvie is delicious!
google avatar

Hans-Peter G.

Yelp
I love both the products as well as experience and it's in a great position as well... Wouldn't miss it.

Emily E.

Yelp
So the robot charged me but did not make my drink... what sucks is theres no one to talk to to fix it lol. I also tried to email the company but no response. Save your money! Not worth the risk of something going wrong. Its giving scam.
google avatar

Seth B.

Yelp
The novelty of the cute dancing robot arm is supposed to distract you from the wait for two outdated, gas station type coffee machines running push bottom programs for different drinks. No fresh grinding and the laughable 12oz cappuccino makes this good for and as pleasant as getting roadside stale brews on the go--if there's no line of ogling tourists
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
Interesting and somewhat entertaining, but the coffee, despite being from a quality local roaster, is terrible.
google avatar

Ebir A.

Yelp
I was skeptical at first but this coffee robot made a really delicious latte with oat milk, and fast. No plastic crap, too, which is a huge plus. It does a little too much anthropomorphic gesturing to make you think it's not evil, but that's ok, it's entertaining. No place to leave a tip.
google avatar

John J.

Yelp
Mediocre coffee and horrible costumer service... Been waiting 4 months for a $2.91 refund for a coffee that next was made. I understand computer issues when it comes to orders being processed, but when you email and interact with a human and get nothing... Done.

Rima E.

Yelp
Awful coffee and expensive too! Didn't even taste like coffee. Would not recommend at all.
google avatar

Kimberly K.

Yelp
Awful. I ordered a cappuccino. I was the only order. This robot made two and dumped both of them out right away. Obviously defective. Wonder how many people lost their money today at SFO airport. Where do I get a refund? It's impossible to google a link for assistance.
google avatar

Becca L.

Yelp
In the United terminal at SFO - everyone was staring at the machine but not buying so I thought I would give it a try. My drink was ready almost as fast as it took me to find my pickup code on the wall. It was a good drink, 4 stars for not having a lids to fit my cup size. I would try this again!

Asor A.

Yelp
Made a great matcha latte and a fun experience with the robot arm. Nobody had to touch my drink except me, so all clean. I'm a fan!

Charlotte L.

Yelp
Easy to order, fun to watch, but not even half a cup of coffee and no customer service number.

Julia L.

Yelp
Super fun quirky machine, and the matcha lattes with oat milk are I'm addicted. Airport employees also get a 30% discount!!

p d.

Yelp
Nothing special other then the novelty. Picture a nespresso or Kureg but you get served by a robotic arm. Wow, so interesting. I'll take a human experience over this fluff.
google avatar

Ron M.

Yelp
Love Cafe X! Best coffee at a great price for the airport. Oatly milk and Equator beans is the ticket :)
