Chicago’s Best Breakfast Spots

"Start the day with a shot or two of espresso or a sweet and creamy cafe con leche along with a breakfast sandwich made with steak, eggs, grilled onions and Cafecito’s excellent Cuban bread. For a more indulgent meal, dig into pancakes topped with sweet plantains and pineapple while sipping a mimosa made with guava or mango nectar. Cafecito also has locations in Lincoln Park and The Loop." - Samantha Nelson, Eater Staff

This is my 2nd time here. First visit was 2 years ago and I went home raving to my hubby about it. It was his first time to Charleston so you know we absolutely had to stop in so he can check it out for himself. The coffee was just as I remembered it, the Cuban sandwich was on point, my quesito was so delicious and their flan got 2 thumbs up from our 10 year old. The place is clean and beautifully decorated and the owners are the sweetest. They serve with their whole hearts and it shows. We'd love to see them come a bit north to the Greenville, SC area 😉. We need a place like this close to home!

Google
Flan & breakfast sandwich were a hit with our party. Delightful & bright interior to help wake you up while you sip your drink off choice. Coffee is delicious - cafecito is delightful in its simplicity & sweetness; cafe con leche is well balanced and very delicious. Exceptionally kind and charismatic staff. A must visit.

Google
We had a fabulous experience here this morning, greeted warmly by the staff and served delicious mocha, empanadas and a Cubano sandwich. The owner was so kind to bring a ‘puppacino’ for our for our service dog Ozzie too. We would love to return!

Google
Best place to get a cafe con leche in Charleston! I’ve tried quite a bit of their food too, and it’s all been good.

Google
Found this cute spot when walking around downtown but it was closed on a Tuesday. Fortunately, we had the opportunity to return and ordered Cafe con Leche, Cuban Sandwich Breakfast, Caprese Cubano and Pastelito de Cheese. Everything was excellent, the place is colorful with cool Cuban pictures on the wall. Would definitely come back again’

Google
I love this place. Having to attend school in Miami, this spot brings me memories of the great Cuban food during my university era. Must have a Cuban coffee or cafe con leche

Kristy Munsie

Google
The best Cuban food in SC. The owners were so attentive and kind. You must try Cuban coffee if you’ve never had it (spun sugar). Their Cuban sandwich was 10/10 - this place is the real deal

Google
What a treat! The coffee is amazing! We had a pastry and Cuban breakfast sandwich with bacon. Staff was so kind and friendly. We will be back!

Yelp
This place is a gem in Downtown Charleston. We found it when walking around. We ordered the Cuban Breakfast Sandwich, Caprese Cuban Sandwich and cafe con leche with oatmilk. Everything was excellent. Friendly Service with cool Art hanging on the wall. Definitely worth stop by if you are in Charleston.

Yelp
What a cute little cafe!! We happened to stumble upon this cute coffee shop as we were enjoying downtown and decided coffee sounded good. The gentleman at the counter was so cute and sweet! He was a gem. We all ordered basically the same thing, the iced cafe latte with vanilla. I always order my late with a.n extra shot. The latte was soooo smooth and good. Oh man we were all so pleased with our drinks. The drink was made SO WELL. I can't wait to go back and have another. I also wanted to try their guava pastelitos so I have to return again when I visit downtown! Oh and they have the cutest swag for sale. T shirts and all. They also offer beer and flan too! I wish I wasn't so full when we stopped in! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I had a Cuban coffees girlfriend had an iced caramel something or other. My Cuban coffee was fine, I enjoyed it, but her iced caramel drink was OK at best and it was really sad to see them squeezing Hershey's caramel sauce into it. A good coffee, especially at this price point, shouldn't be made with the junk you get at the food store to squirt into cheap ice cream at your kid's birthday party. I really felt that this took away from the notion that this is a premium coffee place at all, unfortunately. J.Ja J.Ja

Yelp
This tiny Cuban coffee shop was a great start to our day in Charleston. The little shop is order-at-the-counter and has seating for about 14. We ordered a couple coffees, pastelitos, and a Cuban breakfast sandwich. Everything was tasty, but the Cafe con Leche was the star of the show. Definitely recommend giving this place a try,

Yelp
Ordering online hit a few hangups, so I was actually surprised to get an email that my order had gone through and had to rush over. I don't really hold that against them and you might as well just eat in anyway. There's certainly room for a Cuban cafe in this touristy stretch of downtown Charleston, and the place looked legit. I was pleased that they had a vegetarian, avocado-based sandwich, and I must say that moreso than the last such offering I tried, this one delivered a mix of flavors; a few fresh veggies and a hit of black pepper livened things up. I don't really know why they always press their bread and do these diagonal cuts, but the results are fine by me. My mango tea was strong on tea flavor and thankfully not overly sweet. They also had plenty of little pastry options, and while I'm not a coffee person, presumably that's their strength. What I wanted from them, they delivered.

Yelp
Stumbled upon the Cafecito quite by accident - and it was just a delight. The owners were so personable and friendly- as we chatted Cuban culture for a long time. They even generously shared a few tips with me to try at home. The quick breakfast we ordered was perfect (guava pastry and guava mimosa).
google avatar

Veronica C.

Yelp
I caught this place by chance while walking on king street. Unfortunately it was closed when we passed by but I made sure to stop by on our way out of town. Man, it did not disappoint! It was cool to find a little Cuban culture in Charleston and my little cafecito hit the spot!

Yelp
The best Cuban cafe I've ever been to! Every thing was fresh and delicious . Greatly appreciated the service which was amazing too! We came with a dog and our dog Candy was happy to get complimentary treats & water. Definitely recommend this cafe/restaurant & to come visit this amazing place to enjoy a great atmosphere with delicious food & cafe!

Yelp
I'm Cuban from Miami and I recently moved to Charleston and I couldn't find any Cuban place, I missed having such a delicious breakfast, I loved the decoration of the place and the super pleasant atmosphere. I really liked the neatness and dedication with which they prepared the food, the cheese and spinach pie was divine. The girls who took care of me and my boyfriend were efficient and enjoyable. I felt at home (Miami). I'm definitely going back!!!
google avatar

Yelp
as a cuban kid from miami , wanted to give this place 10 stars but i had to be objective in my review i'll start off by saying the atmosphere/ambiance of this place is totally cool! between the music selection and the intentional artwork/decor, they did an exceptional job. when it came to customer service, they also did an exceptional job. my order was out quickly and the entire staff , owners included, had a smile on their face the ENTIRE time. it's absolutely WONDERFUL to see people that genuinely love what they're doing and who they're doing it with. my only knock on this place was that the pastelitos weren't baked properly. they must've been baked at a higher temperature because the outside was overdone and the inside was on the raw side. i had already eaten somewhere else so i exclusively came here for coffee and dessert so i'll definitely return to try their sandwiches and specials. lastly, they're cafecito was SPOT ON! when i tell y'all i took a sip of that cafe and was automatically transported to my abuela's living room i am not exaggerating, it was that good!

Yelp
Five stars for this family owned gem! Delicious Cuban coffee and pastry and we'll be back for lunch for the Cubano.
google avatar

Emma P.

Yelp
This is a cute new addition to upper King Street. Prices are reasonable and you order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. The coffee is very good and the Cubano sandwich makes for a hearty lunch or breakfast - it's very filling due to the amount of meat inside. The interior is colorful and cute, but the upfront seating area is small and cramped. I'm knocking a star off what would be a perfect breakfast spot because the service is as slow as molasses, be prepared to wait a while for your order, and they could do a better job of tidying and wiping tables.
google avatar

Grace P.

Yelp
I wish I had visited this spot sooner! Wow! I was blown away by the quality and service. For a small space, there is plenty of seating and it is super clean and tidy looking inside. They have plenty of options that all looked amazing. I had already eaten lunch so I tried the iced cafe con leche, which was a 10/10. I will definitely return to try the food which looked and smelled fantastic. Skip the long brunch lines on King and come to this cute and affordable cafe instead! You'll have better service and a better meal.

Yelp
Loved the breakfast sandwich with ham. Guava cheese tostada is wonderful. Delicious Cuban coffees!

Yelp
This cafe is so cute, clean and has plenty if seatings. Everyone was very friendly. Coffee and pastries were awesome. We went for breakfast and loved it.

Yelp
Really cute little Cuban cafe in king Street in downtown Charleston! I love that it is in a convenient location, where you can grab a quick lunch while shopping along King street. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. My family and I ordered a few Cuban sandwiches to share. They were really good! They were loaded with lots of ham and pork! I also loved the plantain chips that came with them. You could tell they were homemade. The sandwiches were made fresh too!
google avatar

Alaina R.

Yelp
Blown away! To start the place is adorable. The paintings of the banana leaves, and the cute mugs and French presses with plants, are adorable. The staff is so kind. The gentleman in there made me feel at home, and like I knew him! He told me must see's in CHS, as it was my first time here. The food was great, and coffee was spectacular. As a Cuban, I'm always ready to find a good cafecito, and the cafecito (coffee) and café did NOT disappoint. I will be back!

Rosa M.

Yelp
This is exactly what Charleston NEEDED. The Cuban sandwiches are perfection. The guava pastries are divine. The coffee is second to none. The staff is friendly, quick and efficient. I stop now every time I'm downtown. I hope they add a second location down by the beach- IOP or Sullivans need this too! I love to sit at the counter and sip my Cafecito while my sandwiches are made- the ambiance is Cuban love.

Yelp
Only Cuban spot in downtown, family owned, good people and good Cuban sandwitches. Great place to stop for a coffee as well
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely little cafe. Excellent food and Cuban coffee specialties. Best belly filling breakfast sandwich I have ever had. Super nice proprietors, Lane and Cathy. Tell them I said hi if you go. Try it, you'll love it!

Rudy V.

Yelp
The best Cuban sandwich outside of Miami. Nice people and good service and reasonable prices. The Media Noche sandwich was also pretty good.

Matt C.

Yelp
They have the best mango ice tea. It is so good. The food was amazing. I recommend the breakfast sandwich.
google avatar

Roni S.

Yelp
Excellent Cuban coffee and sandwiches, great service. Made me feel like I was in Hialeah. The best start to our vacation days were here.
google avatar

Yelp
Little spot that is easy to miss.. but it absolutely wonderful. I got the Elena Ruz.. savory , with a little sweet. Staff friendly, and very fast considering the rush.
google avatar

Yelp
Low key (read: no line) spot right on King St. Friendly service. They were happy to customize our coffee drink and we got a warm Guava and Cheese pastry. The pastry was perfectly flakey and goey in the right spots, with a healthy amount of filling. Would totally eat another one. The space was clean and bright.

Yelp
Local gem for Cuban in Chucktown right on King St. Forget Starbucks and go local!! Owners from Miami and they are so welcoming with southern hospitality. So glad I stopped in today referred from another local small business owner. Cute little space and decor. I came for local Cafe con Leche and left with more with no regrets -delicious food-Cuban bread panni and teased with eggs cheese and added on bacon. So amazing and a guava and cheese pastry for later. They open at 8am and best time to go with everything fresh out the oven. Quality and fairly priced. They also have sangria and other adult beverages. It's 5pm and Friday somewhere! Will be back again when I visit again with my fam.
google avatar

Marie N.

Yelp
It's an adorable little coffee shop with delicious pastries & sandwiches. We visited daily when we were in Charleston and tried the breakfast sandwich, medianoche, guava & cheese pastry. The special treat was the picaddillo pastry (ground beef) that was made by one of the owners-probably the best one I've ever had. Their cafe con leche was delicious but we had to come back for the frozen cafe which was refreshing on a hot summer day. The folks that run the place are awesome, service was always fast, with a friendly smile and on point. Will definitely make it a point to come back on our next visit to Charleston.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food , great energy , attention to detail, personable staff , this place has got it all , would definitely come back .

Yelp
Much needed addition to the Charleston area. Super cute space, outstanding, friendly service! Stopped in for breakfast, had a Cuban breakfast pressed sandwich with bacon and a Cuban coffee with milk. All excellent. Highly recommend!

Cindy B.

Yelp
My friend lived in Miami for 41 years and wanted Cuban so we found this place....the best Cuban sandwich ever !!! It's in downtown Charleston but go find it !!
google avatar

M J.

Yelp
So, I'm very critical of my Cuban foods. This place exceeded my expectations. I am leaving Charleston with a happy satisfied belly of the best Cuban coffee outside of my hometown of Hialeah. The tostada was on point, the pastelito de guayaba y queso was unbelievable. This restaurant cured my homesick heart. I will be back! If you don't try this place...you're missing out. 10/10 it's a 20!

Yelp
On Sunday, July 2, 2023, at approximately 1345 hours, Nat D. and I, Dante G., responded to Cafecito located at 471 King Street, which is in the jurisdiction of the city of Charleston, county of Charleston, and state of South Carolina, in reference to a culinary coup. Upon arrival, we entered through the outward opening door centrally located on the A-side of the business. We entered the unexpectedly bright cafe and moved to the point of sale, which was located to the right of the display counter. We were met by an engaging female white. After a quick look at the menu, I chose a Cuban Cortado and a beef empanada while Nat D. ordered a pressed sandwich and mango juice. The empanada and cortado arrived first. The cortado was excellent. The empanada beef was wonderfully seasoned. While I wasn't super hungry anyway, it was filling. After several more minutes, a young male white rounded the corner with a pressed sandwich and called the name we provided. As I raised my hand, a couple across the small dining area raised their hand and called to the male, despite not being the name that I had provided. They received the sandwich and took a bite out of one half before realizing that it was not their sandwich. After a few moments of trying to figure out how this happened, an older male white approached us and told us that they had made a mistake. It happens. Especially when people answer names that are not theirs. What was concerning, however, was that the older male offered the other half of the sandwich to us. The part that had not been eaten off of. I politely declined, advising that I do not know those people. We waited for the sandwich to be remade. It was of equal quality to the other items ordered. The mango juice was small for the price paid. I did not enjoy my visit. The décor was not what I expected from a Cuban café and the service was not up to my standard. The orders, despite being ordered together, arrived at significantly different times. The other patrons were more of an entitled lot, expected for Charleston. The food was good, but I will not be Havana daydreaming any time soon. No photographs taken. End of Report.

Yelp
Delicious little coffee house right next to our AirB&B. We went every morning. Friendly quick service.

Yelp
So happy I stumbled upon this spot while strolling down King! They've got alll the goods from the cafe to the Cubano to the freaking GUAVA PASTRIES YAASSS! The customer service was stellar, food was on point, the espresso fresh and smooth, and the interior is soo cute! Check out my pics to see what I got :)

Yelp
Stopped in to grab a cafe con Leche because I love me a good coffee. The service was prompt and there were only a few people in the place. The iced coffee wasn't what I hoped for but it was still good. Definitely would try it again.

Jose R.

Yelp
Very good and friendly service. Good seating and nice ambiance. Good Cuban coffee and beef empanadas. The pastries menu is limited, the texture on their guava pastelitos could be better. They don't serve beef pastelitos.

Yelp
4.9 Should be 5 So good ~ Pan Con Bistrec= GREAT Service... delicious Food Stop in & you will not be disappointed
google avatar

Rebecca F.

Yelp
Love this place! It reminds me of the little cuban bakeries I grew up going to in Miami. The food is delicious and the service is above and beyond. Most recently, I ordered food & coffee to be delivered and someone from the cafe called to let me know they forgot to put the guava pastries in the bag and they personally delivered them to me. I'm so impressed by the initiative on top of the quality food & coffee. Can't recommend it more.

Yelp
We are on vacation and we were exploring. We haven't had Cuban food in so long. We were very pleased with the friendly service and delicious authentic Cuban breakfast!
google avatar

L K.

Yelp
Best Cuban food around! We've had several of the sandwiches and they're all amazing but the breakfast one is my new favorite. The colada and cafe con leche are perfect and the flan is some of the best I've had. The staff are always helpful and accommodating and the owner seems to really care.

Cristian L.

Yelp
Great Breakfast Cuban Sandwhich. I asked for a hot sauce, and they gave a Cuban hot sauce, that was really good and hot. Just my style. The cortadito was also a good choice to pair with my breakfast.

Jay R.

Yelp
Very good Cuban Sandwich! It had all the flavors I remember from visits to Tampa. I was able to snag a close parking space and my call in order was prepared quickly. Nice people. I will be back.
google avatar

Sam F.

Yelp
Awesome staff coupled with delicious empanadas and fantastic coffees! Cool bar to chill while you await your drinks. Don't go anywhere else!

Yelp
Delicious food but way more expensive there advertisement is false only . The food is not as cheap as it seems however it is nice cafe, and the workers are nice . Still recommend here and food is delicious.

Yelp
Best coffee shop I've found in SC! If you are a coffee fanatic like me you have to give this place a go!! Amazing people making awesome coffee!!!
google avatar

Monica C.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and food, friendly staff, and a clean and bright atmosphere. This is the perfect place to go after a night out as it was calm and relaxing. The coffee comes in cute mugs and the food comes in red baskets unless you ask for take out. It's nice to see some reusable dining ware in a small cafe. You have to try the guava tostada- amazing!

DaRel C.

Yelp
This cozy little cafe will quickly become your favorite stop for a taste of Havana. We went with friends from Cuba so the stakes were high. Our favorites were the Cuban sandwich with a gooey cheesy savory ham center between two slices of Cuban bread with just the right crunch and the flaky, savory chicken or beef empanadas (get both!). We finished our meal off with a Cafecito, traditional eye popping Cuban coffee, that was robust yet mellow and smooth at the same time and creamy flan, a perfect compliment. The vibe is cozy with a friendly energy- a place you could easily call yours. Try the bar seating in the back to chat with the owners, relax and watch the show. We like the cafe seating up front where you can watch the bustle of King Street or just enjoy time with friends. Our Cuban friends left happy We'll be back!

Yelp
Came to Charleston on vacation and what surprise I had when I found a good Cuban cafe outside of Miami where I live. The food was fabulous and they had the most legit Cuban sandwich on authentic Cuban bread that they get from Miami cause I asked lol. They do this rockin key lime pie on a stick that I've only seen in Key West. I will definitely be coming back!!!

Yelp
Okay y'all - I've never had Cuban coffee before and now I'm obsessed. Located right on king st these coffee shop is perfect to pop right Into while strolling to work/class or just enjoying downtown. The owners are incredible, and being from Miami have always been around Cuban coffee, making them experts! They explained all the different coffees offered and me and my friend decided on the Colada - a cafecito made for sharing, there are 4-5 shots of cafecito in one cup with small cups give to five/share amongst friends for a truly social coffee experience.
