Where to Eat Around Arizona State University | Eater Phoenix

"Cafetal is conveniently located directly in the middle of ASU’s campus. This Colombian cafe is joining the ever-growing list of “crop-to-cup” cafes, in this case offering coffee imported directly from the owner’s third-generation family farm in Colombia, as well as offering top-notch brews from other micro-lot farms around the world. All of their pastries are baked in-house, and the small menu of Colombian provisions includes constantly rotating arepas and empanadas. The ideal spot to get some homework done or finally go on that friend coffee date, Cafetal is a definite spot to try." - McConnell Quinn

This place is so cute! Amazing chai and yummy bites. Love that their coffe comes from their very own 4th gen. Colombian farm. It’s basically on campus, so you’ll probably have to pay for parking. Only downside is there’s no bathroom!

Google
10 stars! Mapped and walked over from hotel during my visit, and it was everything I hoped for and more! I was immediately greeted by the owner, ordered a seasonal pumpkin griffin and flat white. Food was excellent, atmosphere and service was 🤌🏻. Don’t miss this hidden gem.

Google
Got the cold brew and the arepa con aquacate. The coffee is very high quality with a strong dark flavor with bright notes coming through to balance. One of the higher quality coffee to find in the area. The arepa was decent but overpriced for the portion and quality IMO they luckily had Cholula packets available to add more flavor to the arepa. I would rate the cold brew 8.5/10 and the food 7/10

Google
I’ve written a lot of reviews for coffee but this was in my top 3 if not top coffee I’ve ever had (and I honeymooned in Italy). Super fresh and the espresso was pulled PERFECTLY. It was acidic, slightly sour (in the best way, a zing on your tongue), and creamy. The flavor was phenomenal. I got the seasonal latte, which had mocha and butterscotch flavors. I had to go twice on my 4 day trip to Arizona and got some beans to bring home. My husband got some tea latte and they actually made the tea like you are supposed to, timing the brew and all. It was very good. 10000/10

Google
Great location with fantastic coffee and arepas! Sincerely, my wife and I were thrilled with the quality of what we got. The only exception is that the matcha did not hit, but it was our first time, so may have been a one-off. The service was also wonderful and great vibes to hang out to.

Google
I just discovered this amazing family (from Columbia) own place at ASU campus. I ordered Latte clasico and almond croissant. Coffee is amazing! Almond croissant dangerously too good. The place is crowded bur not too loud and it is simply perfect place for a breakfast, coffee break or meeting with a friend. They offer a lot of choices of coffee, teas or non coffee drinks. I didn’t order any meal but looking around everything looks so delicious and I am definitely coming back to try their meals too. All people working there are exceptionally kind. From today, Cafetal is one of my favorite places in the world!

Google
Best. Coffee. Ever. I didn't even realize I liked coffee this much and if you don't think you like coffee, perhaps it's because you haven't had a latte at Cafetal and if you do like coffee--you sure don't want to miss out on this place! Family owned cafe that also owns the coffee farm in Colombia where the beans come from! This coffee is truly next level and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Google
Very cute and quaint coffee shop. It is on a campus so can get very busy with limited seating. Overalls we enjoyed our drinks.

Yelp
What a sweet, family-owned coffee shop bringing a taste of Colombia to Tempe! It's conveniently located near ASU campus and Mill Ave., just 3 blocks away from where we stayed at The Westin. I stopped in on a Monday morning for lattes. Delicious. Wish we stopped here every day of our visit - next time! Wanted to purchase their espresso beans but they were sold out. Loved the pink/peach interior with plenty of tables/seats. Besides coffee drinks, they sell breakfast and lunch items including empanadas and arepas. If you live in the area or are visiting, support this local gem!

Yelp
Love all the unique drink combos that Cafetal has. My personal favorite is the arroz con leche latte! I was really looking forward to the fall menu but they were sadly out of the syrup. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and they have an area with board games so it's a great spot to come in with friends or solo to get work done. They have outdoor seating too! The baristas are always kind and the space is always clean even during a rush. Definitely a great spot in Tempe but keep in mind that it's right on campus so you will get traffic during school hours & there isn't a designated parking area.

Yelp
Such a very cute coffee shop. I ordered a cinnamon latte with a cheese arepa and they were both very good. Service was great and the cashier was friendly. The inside decor is very nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Never disappointed by Cafetal. Their seasonal menus have become some of my favorite things. The staff is always welcoming and inviting. I truly appreciate that they are a family business with direct ties to the coffee itself. A great spot to take a break from work or meet to catch up with friends!

Yelp
Love this place! We stopped by for some coffee and a quick bite on Saturday around 1pm and the dining area was pretty busy. The cashier was friendly and approachable. The cashier took my sisters order first while I looked over the menu. My sister ordered a cheese arepa and a small iced cinnamon latte. I ordered the beef empanadas and a small iced arroz con leche latte. The lattes came out first. My arroz con leche latte was a little on the sweeter side so I let the ice melt a bit. My sisters cinnamon latte was really good, no too sweet - just right. The food was yummy. The cheese arepa came out hot, cheesy, and the masa had a good taste to it. The beef empanadas were my favorite. The outside had a nice crisp to them and the inside was super hot. I ate mine with the chipotle mayo and mmmmm chefs kiss. The inside is nicely decorated and the music was lit. Cant wait to come back!

Yelp
The most perfect Colombian coffee shop in the heart of Tempe was the ideal start to my Sunday morning. The coffee was perfect and the atmosphere made it lovely to sit and chat with family! I tried an empanada and was as was pleasantly impressed! Brought me back to my roots. Was nice to have a little piece of home away from home.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent collective atmosphere. The avo toast was delicious. Great Columbian coffee house. Comfortable space and nice people.

Yelp
What a great spot! The owners were so sweet when I stopped in- super welcoming. The coffee was delicious. High quality, hand crafted flavors, and not over watered/milked down (i had an iced latte). They have a casual shop right on asu campus, so they can get busy. And you have to park in a paid parking garage nearby. So that's not the most convenient. But if you happen to be near by... stop here.

Yelp
I loved the location and it's is in a super walkable area. This would be a cute place to study but we just dropped to check it out and I am glad we did! The coffee was great and the workers were kind. Also the small size cup is so cute if you've already had too much coffee for the day!
google avatar

Bridget H.

Yelp
Great little coffee chop! Really cute vibes, loved the green velvet seats! The staff were really nice! They are hard workers! We went after church so they were busy, but that's okay because our drinks came really fast after we ordered. The iced coffee was delicious! It was not bitter at all and the banana iced coffee was not too sweet and had a great hint of banana. They have plenty of alternatives milk options here as well! We also tried the lemonade which was delicious! The lemonade was not too sweet and a refreshing drink for a hot day! They have some breakfast sandwich and pastry options here as well! We didn't try any food today but will have to next time. Would recommend checking this small business out!
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee spot! Parking is kind of limited unless you park in the parking garage right next door and pay or go to mass at the Newman Center All Saints Catholic Church and stop by for coffee afterwards. They had a lot of great food options! The coffee and lemonade were great, not too sweet and the lemonade was refreshing. The girls at the front were rockstars! It seemed like there were only two of them taking orders, making coffee and food. The place inside is nice and cute with a mix of tables and couches, with available outside seating as well. Definitely will stop in again after church on Sundays.

Yelp
Really good coffee. Excellent bagels. Plenty of tables and room to hang out. My wife likes the decor. Lots of seasonal specials
google avatar

Yelp
This Colombian coffee place is super cute! It's decorated exactly like a coffee shop in Colombia. The coffee is delicious and the staff were very sweet and helpful.

Yelp
This breakfast sandwich was AMAZING like I'm going to actually crave it, so glad I found this place. Their specialty coffees are also delicious- I tried both of them. It was cute inside and the staff were really nice and fast 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cute coffee shop with delicious drinks! I got the Dulce vida latte and a bagel with cream cheese. It was very delicious. The customer service was great!I'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
We love this place! Excellent coffee and food! Delicious empanadas, excellent breakfast sandwiches, and the flat white coffee is the absolute best!!! Glad we discovered it on our first day in town and we couldn't help ourselves but to come every day. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I love Cafetal Coffee! From the cutest vibes to the delicious coffee, this cafe is the perfect place to charge up and get some work done. There are plenty of cute tables inside and out for small groups to sit and chat. This shop is adorable with pink everywhere and tropical plants as decor. I asked the cashier what she recommended for coffee, she went with the Dulce de leche latte, which was amazing! It was so sweet but still lets you enjoy the taste of the coffee. The spicy chorizo sandwich was also incredible. It was soooo filling and had the yummiest sauce on it.

Yelp
Miss this place. Good people, good vibe, and good eatin! Unfortunately my work schedule changed and "Life" happened so had to cut Coffee out because the Blood Pressure doesn't like the caffeine in it for some odd reason. lol! But will be back again and maybe get something else to snack on and chop it up with the cool staff members! Thanks guys and Gals

Yelp
The drinks are decent, but the price is a little higher than average. The food is definitely smaller than expected, especially for the price point.

Yelp
Isn't what it used to be, threw out coffee mid way so sad this used to be my boyfriend and Is fav spot for reliable coffee. Seems like the curated menu isn't reliable anymore, will revisit in the spring to see if they bring back the once beloved spring menu
google avatar

Maggie K.

Yelp
Great bagel sandwiches and yummy speciality coffee drinks. Sandwiches take about 10 minutes so plan accordingly. I loved the Arroz con Leche latte.
google avatar

Yelp
My first time visiting this place and I already can't wait to be back. The staff were friendly, my order was correct, and my coffee was ready within minutes! It's so homey and beautiful inside and the coffee is delicious. Also, the staff pronounced my name the way my family does and it filled me with such a happy feeling! I had a seasonal flavor called cocada latte with coconut and caramel and it was amazing! Can't wait to try more flavors and food next time!
google avatar

Jasel O.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place so bad but the coffee was a 3/10 it tasted like straight milk the coffee isn't strong and had a weird taste maybe it was the arroz con leche . Avacado turkey club was mid and the turkey had these red dots in them .The customer service was great the barista was so sweet but the food or drinks were mid
google avatar

Yelp
A great option for a cafe in the busy area of Tempe. The matcha latte is organic and topped with a design. Quick with service with friendly staff. There were cozy spots for seating both indoor and outdoor and gentle music.

Lynne T.

Yelp
Excellent coffee. Fabulous, friendly, professional, courteous staff. Comfortable atmosphere. Will def come back.

Yelp
The shop is beautiful, offers delicious food, has friendly staff, and great coffee. It was a delight to visit.

Yelp
This place has been remolded since I've last been here and it's sooooo cute! They have done an amazing job with the remodeling and aesthetics. Can't forget to mention they have a food menu and amazing drinks always! Parking is hard which is a bummer and it's in central Tempe so it can be very busy with students. There's a parking garage next door that is Fullerton one but you do need to pay.

Andrew M.

Yelp
Great quiet coffee shop to get some work done or read a book. Excellent food and drinks, the workers were all very attentive and helpful as well

Echo M.

Yelp
EDIT: also, consistency is key here. the 4-5 times I've gone the food is consistently amazing. The food is amazing!!! So far, I've had the beef columbian empanadas (which come with a ají salsa), the bacon avocado breakfast sandwich (normally I add cream cheese), and the chorizo breakfast sandwich (I normally replace the bagel with a jalapeño cheddar bagel and add cream cheese). All of these items are 10/10. The food is everything you would want it to be. I do want to mention the drinks. I haven't had the coffee but I've tried the matcha and the mango smoothie. Their drinks are organic, but if you like things that are sweet then I'd recommend ordering sugar or honey with those drinks, but idk abt the coffee. The mango smoothie tasted just like a pure mango but I would have preferred a little more sweetener but it was refreshing! The matcha was also refreshing but it comes unsweetened as I said. I also want to take time to talk abt the cafe ambiance. The cafe is so cute and cozy! A good amount of natural lighting inside and plenty of space to sit and chat with friends or even study or play board games that they have lying out! Finally, the cashiers are very kind and patient.

Yelp
UPDATE: I'm updating my review & adjusting the stars, not because my experience on the day I wrote about improved but because the response to my original review validated my comment. What do I mean? The owner took the time to read my review & comment on it. She asked me to follow up with her via email & I did. I shared my experience in greater detail & we realized that it was a 'one off'. Based on the exemplary customer service that I witnessed for others & the likelihood that my group was unexpected, it's likely that no other customers will miss out on their food orders. I wanted to like it... great ambiance, good prices, delicious coffee, nice staff. Why 2 stars? I was with a group, but arrived early to order my breakfast sandwich before the crowd. I ordered, paid & money was deducted from my card, but no sandwich. Never. Not ever a bite. No apology offered, but my card was refunded.

Shane G.

Yelp
Great cafe! The food and drink menu have unique options that are Columbian and well as the usual American options. Don't shy away from the Columbia options as they are very good. The Arroz con Leche was delightful! I am normally a flat white, but they easily adjusted the sugar to deliver a subtle sweetness with cinnamon. We also had the spicy chorizo breakfast sandwich. The sandwich was very good, the chorizo was not greasy and was lightly spicy. I do like spicy, so I would say the spicy index is 1 out of five stars. A low heat level for anyone to safely eat, but still feel a little warmth to taste the layers in the sandwich. The sandwich was perfectly toasted and prepared. A good combination of flavors. If you order, I would add two thin slices of avocado, but that is just my preference for the hot cold contrast. I would order it again just as they made it too. The staff are pleasant, skilled, and engaging. The cafe has outdoor and indoor seating. The my had solid air circulation for hot days, and the outdoor seating is partially shaded. Well worth the stop and when I return, I will definitely look to order the more traditional Columbian options.

Kitzia C.

Yelp
coffee was alright but the girl behind the counter, didn't get her name but she had a piercing and long black curly hair, was super rude. every question I had about the coffee she seemed bothered. I didn't like my drink and would've asked for a remake but didn't due to the fact that she was practically rolling her eyes at me. I like the concept but attitude/service wasn't there. :(
google avatar

Lex F.

Yelp
Come for the breakfast sandwiches, stay for the coffee. At 7:15 am I needed a hearty breakfast before my hike and I came here because the breakfast sandwiches were loved in other reviews. I built my own, adding the avocado spread and it did not disappoint. But the real star was my simple drip coffee. The family who owns this place also runs a coffee farm in Colombia. I've been roasting my own coffee for more than a decade so I'm particular about my coffee. Also, I tend to prefer African coffees. All that aside, wow, this was a delicious cup. Clean caramel flavors, drifting toward sweet toffee. There was not a lot of bitterness, it was closer to milk chocolate. My cup had just enough acidity to make it right and will please those who don't like a very acidic brew. It was an exceptional coffee that was well roasted and beat a lot of pour overs, even though it was drip brewed. I would not hesitate to come back the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
My coworker and I were in need of a good pick me up when we came across Cafetal. We've never tried it and heard people talk about it. We walked over and it had a good chunk of people there, including students, which is always a good sign! Once we walked in it was very cozy and modern. Lots of seats to choose from including tables you can work at. The staff were very nice and also quick getting orders out although it was pretty busy! They offer a good little selection of baked goods and food. I got a muffin which was delicious. I also got their iced dark chocolate cocoa specialty drink and this was great! It gave me a good pick me up for my day! I'm excited to come back and try their others coffees. If you're in the area, drop by!
google avatar

Bronson S.

Yelp
Came here before school one day early in the morning for breakfast. The interior was cute and I was greeted by the workers who took my order. They were very friendly and we chatted about our favorite vintage stores! I got the arepa avocado, which was very affordable. It came out quickly and was very warm. The arepa had a nice chew to it and the masa had good flavor. The egg and avocado on top was good as well. I see myself going again next time I'm on campus early and need some quick breakfast!
google avatar

Rashi D.

Yelp
The cutest coffee shop on the Tempe campus! Lots of tables to sit at to do work or hang out with friends. I usually order a Chai Latte but ordered a dirty Chai Latte. It had a good kick to it but I prefer the regular Chai Latte more. The service was friendly as always!!
google avatar

Ali B.

Yelp
Every time I try a different coffee shop in Tempe I think it's my fave and then the next place tops it. I LOVED Cafetal. This place is small and in an area with not great parking but luckily I was there during a time where it wasn't too busy. I ordered an arroz con leche iced latte with oat milk and extra cinnamon on top and it was delicious! Creamy and flavorful, even after the ice began to melt. Very sweet baristas too. They do not offer the free sticker for the Yelp check in anymore, but not a problem, I never use them anyways! Would definitely recommend this spot!

Brian S.

Yelp
Cafetal is one of the most delightful coffee shops in Tempe -- they have great coffee and breakfast, and a beautiful (and shaded in the mornings!) patio right by ASU! And the staff is always friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Mollie C.

Yelp
Adorable Colombian themed coffee shop on College. The baristas were super helpful with recommendations. The cafe con arroz with cinnamon and oat milk was recommended to me and I got it half-sweet. It was delicate and delicious. Highly recommend this pink paradise!!
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Great service, fun atmosphere, yummy drinks and food! Highly recommend as a semi frequent flyer

Luis B.

Yelp
Very small, cute, inviting coffee spot. The lattes and cold brews are so smooth and delicious. I can drink the cold brew black. The baristas are usually very nice and helpful to explain the various Colombia inspired items.
google avatar

Yelp
Truly one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had, and I live on the east coast. Perfect egg (not the rubbery scrambled kind you often find), well toasted, and delicious sausage and cheese. A very cute vibe inside also. Didn't try the coffee but there was a broad spread of fun seasonal beverages. And staff was great!
google avatar

Jacob R.

Yelp
I got the BYOB bagel. The egg looks like a patty and is short of looking like it's from McDonald's. It is definitely a Mcegg or powdered egg for sure. Cheaping out on key part of the breakfast. Not only that, it came with 1 single piece of turkey. If that's not stingy i don't know what is. A single slice of turkey haha. Wait it gets better. If you don't add anything to your sandwich it's a plain cheese, 1 piece of turkey, and patty egg bagel. Every addition such as tomato or lettuce is extra $. Coffee was great however. I got the classic Latte Vanilla.

Yelp
This will be my new coffee go-to whenever I'm looking for a coffee fix near ASU! Ambiance: A casual coffee shop playing Latin music, making it perfect for studying (if you like white noise) or catching up with a friend. There are several tables throughout the cafe for people to study. The seats by the window do get hot (no surprise for downtown Tempe, though). Drinks: Love their selection of homemade syrups! By the barista's recommendation, I got an arroz con leche latte with oat milk and extra cinnamon on top. It was a little pricey ($4.50 latte + .50 for syrup + 1 for oat milk + tip) in my opinion for a 12 oz latte. I think it's kind of worth it, though! It was a really tasty drink, and I've never had this flavor in a latte before, which was a huge plus! The drink came in a to-go cup and was a bit too hot by the time I had my first sip. I think I'd easily bump this up to a full 5/5 if the drink was served in a cup with some latte art and a little bit cooler (so I won't burn my tongue upon first sip). This place was a solid 4.5/5 for me. I'm excited to try the arepas here next time, maybe when I'm at ASU around breakfast time. Support this local business - you won't regret it!!

Jessica T.

Yelp
I usually get a latte but I had the chai for the first time today and it was sooooo good! The baristas are always so welcoming and nice, and it's a great spot to just hang out.
google avatar

Beatriz B.

Yelp
Great drinks and the Arepa was delicious!! Very busy place! All the tables were taken! Will be back soon!

Loreli L.

Yelp
The food was so good!! The baristas were very kind and welcoming. The coffee shop itself is decorated very nicely. I ordered a matcha and it was average but overall everything else was good!
google avatar

Sami L.

Yelp
Coffee break. I got the arroz con leche latte, and it was good! The seating area inside is a great space to take a deep breath and unwind for a little bit. Definitely a WAY better alternative to Starbucks. Similar in a lot of ways, just adding the small business perk. SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES!!I checked in on Yelp and got a sticker to put on my hydro flask and it's sooo cute. Thank you Cafetal!! I walked here, it's on the Arizona state campus so i expect parking might get tight.

Yelp
Coffee break on our adventure and our friend recommended this spot. AMBIANCE: Parking: Street metered parking. It's near AZU so it can get busy Seating: Seating inside and outside about 10 ground and about 2-4 people per table. Feels: The spot is in the heart of the AZU town, walkable to a lot of things from the eatery to the campus. I like the cleanliness and the dedication to being local and its community. A pleasant family-friendly vibe. It's a good place to hang out or get some work done. FOOD: Iced Coffee - Con Leche (Recommend) Fresh and sweet. I also got a pump of hazelnut which I wouldn't recommend as it is already sweet as is. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Awesome! Friendly people and quick service TL; DR OVERALL: 4.5 Stars. I dig the spot. Charming location, friendly vibes, and delicious coffee. For a quick caffeine fix with some local flavors, this is a good spot. TIPS: * Check out their seasonal flavors
