The Best Pies in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"This quaint neighborhood coffee shop always offers a wide selection of pies, both by the slice and whole, all visible in a glass case by the cashier. Varieties include Oregon berry, butterscotch, and lemon cream, but the true standout is the key lime pie, with beautifully piped stars of whipped cream and slices of lime. All pies can also be ordered in advance." - Michelle Lopez

Stepping in, the aroma alone was a warm hug. Seriously, the coffee here hits different – smooth, robust, and expertly crafted, like a little pick-me-up art project in a cup. And don't even get me started on the pastries; they're dangerous in the best way possible. The vibe? Utterly chill. Perfect for lingering, plotting world domination, or just staring out the window with a good book. It’s got that easygoing, welcoming feel that makes you want to stay all day. A true gem.

I've been coming to this café for years and I love it :) they open at 7 am so I might end a morning walk here and get a latte and a quiche for my husband and I (we love the quiches here). Today, I tried the chicken fried steak and potatoes, and it is delicious! I will say the sausage gravy has cayenne pepper in it, so there is a little bit of a kick. The potatoes are soft, buttery, and well seasoned - a tasty addition. The chef is sweet, too. If you are getting the Iced Chai Latte. I recommend letting the gritty sediment settle to the bottom. If you are using a straw, don't drink from the bottom XD - Unless you like the gritty sediment.. The chai latte itself is on the sweeter side, not spicy. And I always get their key lime pie :) The pastry choices are many, and they usually sport some local art and products. Like mugs. It's a charming small business with nice employees, chill music, and ambient lighting, with plenty of windows to let in natural light for their plants. I got here at opening, and there were two other people, but this place gets good business, so I am sure it fills in throughout the day.

IMPORTANT: Google maps will tell you that it's right in front of whole foods if you use the navigation feature this is incorrect. It's behind the whole foods building. I included pictures of the outside of the building and the street sign. Really nice place to sit outside. Inside is nicely appointed with ample seating. The outside is clean, minus the fall leaves, so it feels like the PNW. BONUS! 😜 Putting your order in is simple and easy and printed menu provided. I had the biscuits and gravy that was on special and its ginormous! I don't remember the biscuits but the one that you recommended was excellent. Highly recommended.

Google
I live locally and adore the key lime pie. It's absolutely wonderful. Most recently I also got their Caprise sandwich which was fantastic! Excellent flavor in the bread itself, the balsamic was incredible, very well executed. I've also brought in various visiting family members in the past and they've all enjoyed it!

Google
This has quickly become our favorite coffee spot! After moving to Portland and exploring walking-distance locations, we’ve become regulars at Caffe Destino. The service is fantastic and employees are so kind and welcoming. Amazing cold brew and good vibes, plus music on Sunday mornings! The outdoor seating is nice for when we have our dog and my 13 month old toddles around inside happily exploring. All of the patrons I’ve met are also so friendly, and the owner is fantastic. We love you a latte, Caffe Destino!

Sarah A.

Google
I was expecting a little more from this place to be honest. But I’m also wondering if I ordered the wrong thing. I opted for an avocado toast and cold brew. They were both fine but nothing spectacular. Service was good everyone was nice.

Google
Caffeine Destino is truly something special, and is more than just an awesome coffeehouse. The baked goods are amazing and so is the breakfast and lunch menu, packed with delicious items. The environment and vibe is lovely with a variety of seating type options, with low and high tables, plus size inclusive seating inside and outside. The people that work there are kind and provide such high food customer service, and the owner is a true delight! Don't miss on Caffe Destino, you won't be sorry!!

Google
Delicious Millie's choice breakfast sandwiches. Upgrade to the cheddar bacon chive biscuit or if you're feeling spicy the jalapeño cheddar bacon biscuit. So yummy and very filling. Also tried the key lime pie and it was welcoming very tangy as I'd expect. The lemon pie was good also and had a lovely lemon taste. Just the right amount of "pucker power"

Yelp
This space has great light and ambiance. The staff is friendly (shout out to Holly, always a delight) and the food and drinks are consistently high quality. I come here to work pretty regularly and I recommend Caffe Destino highly.

Phillip D.

Yelp
Cute atmosphere. Delicious and fresh baked goods and coffee! Nice owner and staff. Would return!

Yelp
Cute corner cafe. Food seemed to be appreciated. We had the pastrami sandwich with avocado (more like a guacamole) but I thought it was tasty. The food seemed to be priced a little higher than I would have thought. I did love that they had live music but made it difficult to chat due to the noise. Also there aren't a lot of tables so not good for a decent crowd.

Jessica L.

Yelp
Visited for the first time in a long time. The place was popping, but the coffee let me down and the burrito was watery! No, thanks.
google avatar

Liam W.

Yelp
Really cute place with kind service and great vibes. The pie is good. The rest of the food is unremarkable and not always well made.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
Standouts are excellent service and overall vibe. I was attracted to the mushroom coffee sign. I'm not versed enough in all the health claims, but it tasted good. You do pay a premium. The slight let down was the Millie's Choice breakfast sandwich, I paid extra for the biscuit option. - Most notably, the bacon was very thin, it had a low quality to it. - It's semi-non functional, i.e., it was too tall. - Everyday dark yellow cheddar is bland and boring, so premium sandwich shops are opting for sharp white cheddar. - Some sort of interesting sauce would take it to the next level. - I'm not a fan of the you can add this for $2 and that for $2.50 pricing model. Just make a kick ass sandwich and don't try to please everyone. I look forward to trying other menu items.

Scott S.

Yelp
A local staple that provides incredible coffee drinks, amazing pastries, and great breakfast and lunch food. The owner is usually serving and provides amazing service, as does all her employees. It is a cute corner shop with fun outdoor seating and a fun indoor seating area. Great place to chat and catch up with friends.

Yelp
Came here around 8:30am Sunday morning and there was plenty of seating both indoors and outside. This place is such a hidden gem. I live nearby but have never been before and I can't wait to come back. Ordered a drip coffee and a bacon cheddar chive biscuit. Loved how there was a choice of light or dark roast for the drip. I got the dark and it was exactly what I wanted. The biscuit was perfection. Came hot and buttered and so flavorful. They have plenty of baked goods and a full breakfast menu too, I can't wait to try more. The space inside is very cozy. I loved the windows and the plants inside. The freshly cut flowers on all the tables was a nice touch as well. The staff was very attentive and friendly. I heard one of the baristas greet people by name after we sat down. It was a great atmosphere.

Yelp
Woww so good. Stumbled into this place on accident looking for breakfast on a Sunday at noon. Such luck! Chilaquiles were amazing and the caprese sandwich. And nice friendly cool ppl.

Mary H.

Yelp
Oh my goodness! The vibe of this adorable coffee shop matches how delicious the food and coffee tastes! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Customer recommend this place. Could not have been better!! Service was awesome! The eggs were phenomenal, fresh and cooked perfectly! My smoothie was on point! Coolest little place you ever wanted to get cozy and read a book in! Smelled terrific too! The crazy part is; I went in for the coffee :)) The worst part is; I went gluten free 16 months ago and it appeared I didn't even get to indulge in what they did best! If you go to Portland, treat yourself and hit Caffe Destino! Absolutely worth it! A 6th Star for also having a very clean place!

Gina S.

Yelp
if you are looking for a most scrumptious and heaping variety of sweet and savory breakfast / lunch items head to Cafe Destino! the owner is so lovely and her team makes everything from scratch from the yummy breakfast burritos to the out of this world pies! We are so grateful to have a wonderful cafe!

Scarlet P.

Yelp
I stopped in here cause I saw a sign saying they had chaga (mushroom) coffee. It's a super cute place with plenty of space and a cozy atmosphere. They seem to have a lot of good food, drink, and treat options. I got an iced mushroom coffee and a chocolate chip coffee cake muffin. Both were super tasty. The service was quick and everyone was very kind. 10/10 and I will be coming back:) Right next to Starbucks so you might as well come here !

Casey M.

Yelp
I'm a huge advocate of supporting local eateries. I was keen on trying out this cute little cafe that never seemed to make it onto my radar before moving to the neighborhood. Now, I've been here multiple times. The good thing is that the people who work here are so incredibly kind and sweet, I almost didn't write this review out of fear of hurting their feelings. But the coffee? Probably the worst I've ever had in Portland. It's telling when I wish I'd spent the $7 or so at Starbucks a block over (somehow a half step better). Everything tastes burnt. Drip, hot and iced lattes. Milk? Oat? Everything. Their foods haven't tickled my fancy so my review is specific to their coffee. From what I've heard from others, their strength is in their food (especially their key lime pie). But I'm not a big sweets person. Five stars for the wonderful staff. Zero stars for coffee.

Charles M.

Yelp
This is one if my favorite cafes. The staff are welcoming and cool and fun to interact with. The lattes are great (filled to the brim this morning) and the food is unique and tasty. The mocha/chocolate/nut scones are worth a trip by themselves.

Liz H.

Yelp
Got a slice ($7.00) of mixed berry pie to go. Crust totally inedible. Dense, tasteless. Filling OK. I'll stick with my go-to Lauretta Jean's.

Emma C.

Yelp
I love Destino!! Yummy coffee and breakfast burritos. Staff is so nice. Great cafe vibes. My favorite neighborhood spot.

Connie O.

Yelp
I love this place. Avocado toast is so good. They also have a falafel plate now which looks delicious, but I haven't tried it yet. It's really nice to sit outside when it's a sunny day here. I also like sitting inside with the flowers on the tables, Holly and her sweet crew, and happy regular customers enjoying being there. Unusual scones, beautiful pies, delicious breakfasts.

Brenda Q.

Yelp
Everyone and everything at Caffe Destino is amazing! Holly, has been so helpful. We are excited to have this outstanding little shop cater the pies for our wedding. The key lime will serve as our wedding "cake". Beautiful and tasty tribute to our love.

Marcy L.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE coming here every morning! The owners, Holly and Elias, are the kindest, most hard working individuals I've ever known and it shows! They have transformed a (previously owned) mediocre cafe into a destination spot! The homemade sourdough biscuits and Elias' Key Lime Pie are to die for!! And, what could be better than supporting a young couple, with 2 kids, both born and raised Oregonians, in their dream of owning their own cafe?!?!

Johnny B.

Yelp
I travel domestically and abroad, spending nearly every morning in a cafe/coffee shop working. 2 weeks in Portland and this is my overall favorite! The coffee, food, ambience, friendliness all on point. love they have day old which, I grabbed on my way out each time. the quiche, made more like a large puff pastry muffin, is to die for. As is the breakfast sandwich. The sweet treats the best I have had 11 days into my stay. not sure why only 4 stars overall. I strongly recommend!!!

Mariah G.

Yelp
I absolutely love this cafe the food is so tasty and excellent every time I go . Everyone who works their has been so nice and sweet the perfect spot to walk to in the morning to enjoy a cup of coffee !

Yelp
Very disappointed. It seemed like a cute little coffee shop turns into an after hours drinking spot. Low key, some food, some dessert. It is small and quaint. You get a coupon for dessert on checking in. We showed up before dinner reservations for a quick spiked coffee drink. We had 25 minutes before our reservation 2 doors down. There's only 1 person working. We get there and there's no one upfront but can hear someone working in back. Minutes pass someone comes out, helps another couple, dives back in the back more cooking noise. More minutes, comes out to serve food and goes back in the back. Now we have 9 minutes to reservation. No way she can make our drinks and we can drink them that fast. We leave. She was still in the back. There was a group of about 4 or 5, 2 couples at the window, and a couple at the bar. She was alone. Possibly cute good place but not staffed for several people and definitely not good to drop by with 25 minutes for a quick drink.

Yelp
Caffe Destino!!!! On Sunday morning I woke up to leave for an early work day to realize I had no food in my fridge. I called in, thinking they open at 7, to realize they don't open until 7:30 on Sundays... but, like the true angels on earth that they are, I was able to order a breakfast burrito and Americano to pickup at 7:15 and got to work on time and fed with the best breakfast burrito in Irvington!!!!!!!! I think I would have passed on to the next realm had I not been able to get this breakfast burrito, and they were so kind & gracious to let me pickup before they even opened on a Sunday!!!! Caffe Destino you are my heros and I love you. Go here if you want the best breakfast & pastries & coffee in Irvington. Yay!

Laurian R.

Yelp
Super amazing delicious pie!! Since Random Order closed awhile back, this is my new go-to for amazing pie. They also serve cupcakes and other treats, (some for your dog as well!) Super sweet staff , the lunch menu also looks great although I've not tried it yet. I love supporting small independent woman owned business and you should too!

Lorene S.

Yelp
Best pie ever; key lime, pecan, name your pie. . . along with good coffee.l and friendly staff.

Megan S.

Yelp
We haven't had anything we don't love.... The wraps, the pot of gold, the French toast.... It's all amazing.... But their pies! We regularly order the berry during the summer. The chocolate fudge is a regular slice purchase. They had a peach cardamom as a summer special that I loved. Just when I thought we had already reached the pinnacle of 'favorites' I ordered the lemon cream pie for a dinner party and everyone raved .... Over and over again. Holly and Elias are true professionals.

Kate G.

Yelp
I just went here after lunch today for dessert and a mocha. I hadn't been in since I discovered it shortly before Covid. I love the ambience -- bright and sunny (even if the sun's not out!), good windows, nice chairs, well-spaced tables, high ceiling. And of course the most important part, great selection and wide variety of pastries! All made IN HOUSE! You're bound to find something you like. They started to serve me in paper cups but just in time I asked if they had real cups, and they do. Whew! (If I see one more paper cup I think I'll jump out a window.) Also, they have plenty of milk alternatives. Judging from their cheerful and enthusiastic attitude, I'm pretty sure the servers were the owners of the place. They seem VERY HAPPY to be fully open again! And by fully, I don't mean 24/7, I mean sans Covid. Check their hours -- open only till 2:30 or so, I THINK, but planning to expand into the later afternoon. PS: I didn't ask if they have savory foods as well, so they may actually be MORE than a desserty-type place.

Melissa S.

Yelp
Staff was super friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed the outdoor seating area. Oat milk latte and vegetarian breakfast burrito were delicious!

Diane C.

Yelp
Love Caffe Destino! A Portland favorite! Great coffee, friendly staff, yummy pastries , scones & quiche.

Maggie F.

Yelp
Had been intending to try Caffe Destino ever since we moved to Portland in August. We'd drive down NE Fremont a lot, and every time we passed the storybook-like set of shops I'd start up "I can't wait to try that cafe on the corner". I'll start off by mentioning that I'm a big Cafe D'arte fan... so I'm always partial towards anyone who serves it (you have great taste in my book if you do). Visited the caffe Sunday morning for the first time, had a wonderful 8oz cappuccino with great foam! Then, proceeded to roll out of bed Monday morning for a go at their breakfast sandwich. Not disappointed in the slightest, and now I cannot wait to go back for a third time! Great service, fair prices, excellent espresso & clean yet filling breakfast food.

Libby A.

Yelp
Cozy and comfy!! Excellent coffee, service, and the best biscuit I've had for a while. 10/10.

Devon L.

Yelp
Love this place. Easily the best quiche I've ever had and it is a perfect size for the morning. Vegetable or meat, both are savory, served warm, and best paired with their coffee. Welcoming people and an great environment to spend some time. Can't recommend Caffe Destino enough!
google avatar

Terry S.

Yelp
02/22 Feb 22, 1980 the US beat heavily favored Russia in the semi-finals of the Olympics. First visit. What's not to like, unassuming joint. Young lad serving said he was ski-instructor for Grant High. I had coffee/biscuit (biscuit very good). Bring your own parking spot Whole Foods parking spills out a block or two!
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
Yet another lovely pie. I came here years ago and wasn't too impressed. Apparently they turned over owners. Maybe when I came here first, it was an off day but I'm glad I stopped by the other day. They are so extremely nice and it was just a refreshing surprise. So very helpful and the service just felt homey and genuine. Since then, I swing by on my afternoon walks with my toddler and always try to purchase any pies or quiches they have in stock at that point in time. Both are quite delicious. I prefer a dessert that is worth it... basically anything loaded with chocolate. The lady prefers fruits... The toddler... anything. Anyway, we go through about a pie a week and we're doing that new diet, #quarantine15isreal so we will likely continue for a bit. If you're interested in a good pie for $25, definitely give Caffe Destino a chance, it's delish! I can't wait until things get back to normal and we can get some other things other than some to go pies and quiches!

Yelp
18April18 @ 1pm. Nice old building and room. Quick friendly service. We had two lattes. Good coffee that was fresh with no bitterness and nice crema.
google avatar

Caitlin D.

Yelp
Friendly service and delicious food. COVID measures minimize contact. This has been our go-to for breakfast sandwiches in NE.
google avatar

Yoshua M.

Yelp
I love the pastrami and salmon sandwiches, is very very tasty. The key lemon pie is insane. Is fast is good amount with quality.
google avatar

Demario P.

Yelp
The best chocolate banana bread I have ever had. Very quiet place with friendly customer service. The waiter was so sweet and friendly she recommended a bunch of things to get.

Rebecca R.

Yelp
I love Caffe Destino! The best breakfast burritos and sandwiches, pastries, and coffee. Plus, it's a cozy cafe atmosphere with a really friendly staff. The inside recently re-opened to the public, too, so it's the perfect spot for reading a book or getting some work done. They are doing pies for Thanksgiving, too.
google avatar

Jacqueline S.

Yelp
Caffe Destino is my neighborhood cafe. Always friendly service and a good assortment of food on the menu. Check out their home-baked biscuits with eggs or their banana-chocolate chip bread. Caffe Destino is a great place to meet friends or work away from the office. WiFi is sometimes iffy, but they'll reset it for you if you ask. Request to Caffe Destino re banana bread: fewer chocolate chips, add nuts, use more banana and decrease baking time. In my experience, your banana bread tends to be dry and almost great.
google avatar

Gina G.

Yelp
I so want for this place to be better than it is. First, the good things: super cute ambiance, lovely light, great neighborhood. But you know what? We go cafes for the service, the java, and the noshies. This could be stellar but for the fact that they skimp on every. daym. thing. Funky vlasic pickles? Cheap-ass chips? $2.50 to sub out for avo? An $8.50 paltry sammie comes to $11+? Finally, the place seems dingy and dirty. I couldn't finish my order. Funky in a non-good way. I hope they up their game.
google avatar

Alba M.

Yelp
We have been coming here for years and love this place. Their pies are a nice source of joy and comfort in these times of social isolation, their banana bread is great, their coffee and hot chocolate is delicious, and the owners are wonderful and kind. We are grateful for this neighborhood spot and hope it is here for years to come.
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
Cute space and very friendly servers! They have the best quiches. Every time I get one it's delicious. Edit- I've started to order the Mexican mochas and it's soooo delicious. Quiche and Mexican mocha is my new go to combo!!

Emily H.

Yelp
The new owners took over in February 2020, and have done a spectacular job not only navigating the pandemic professionally, but also updating and improving upon the menu, space, and team of employees. All pastries, pies, granola, and focaccia bread for sandwiches are made fresh in-house. House made chai is spicy and delicious, same with house made pumpkin spice mix. Plenty of alternative milk options for drinks. The owners have made tasteful changes to the interior of the cafe, and are usually offering outdoor seating for customers who wish to rest a while (currently on Multnomah County freeze for dining, however). If you want to enjoy a delicious coffee beverage, have a little breakfast or lunch, and experience caring service, go here. You can even order a pie for the holidays, or anytime of year!
google avatar

T H.

Yelp
The rating is purely based on the fact that they have a drink called HEATH MOCHA. That would be a mocha with Heath Bar powder [MUST find this in SF] in it! Awesome, and tasty! I haven't tried the food here, but they serve breakfast and lunch. Apparently if you head in there late in their workday (after 1pm), certain items are significantly discounted. Service is excellent and friendly too. However, I am not too sure about their math skills. Our drink order total was a little bit less than what we'd pre-calculated based on the menu on the wall. Guess not everyone can be a mathlete! They have a "Buy 10 Drinks and get your usual for FREE" club - Sprez Club, they call it. Maybe they will miscount and give me the free drink after seven or eight! They are located just around the corner from the Starbucks [1 of over 75 locations].

Yelp
So excited to have found this place! Such a comfy atmosphere and the people who work here are down to earth and super kind! If you're looking for a "go to cafe" with tasty food and friendly faces this is a great spot!

Monica K.

Yelp
Great food, especially the acai bowls. Breakfast served most of the day too, which is awesome. Nice gluten free options. Great specials, Reasonably priced. And really sweet staff. I always look forward to my weekly visit.

Yelp
So yea...it's a little bit low staffed. What good corner coffee place isn't? Honestly, I like the slow service. This place is home to my 10+ person biweekly bookclub. We moved because the book pub next door didn't have any room even after we made reservations over and over. Then there were the violins. But anyways!!! I am so happy this is our new bookclub home. This is place where we met only 2 weeks after Alison had her baby and later she started bringing her baby, this is the place where we did our Christmas book exchange, this was the place we found out Holly had fallen in love.... We did it week after week at this cafe. It's quiet, sometimes the tables wobble, sometimes you don't get your drink for a little time (understandable if we bring some 10 people in at once) but also....the sun comes through the windows in a very beautiful way, it's warm in the winter and doesn't have a massive draft when someone opens the door, it's not very crowded and we always find tables to put together...the butterscotch pie is killer (I miss it so much since the lockdown), and they put sprinkles on your drink. The parking is great for us on a Sunday. If you aren't in a hurry and you are having a quiet Sunday...this quiet little place will hit the spot with a nice piece of pie and a warm drink. They close a little early so we always feel bad leaving dishes right at closing time but I honestly feel this cafe so close to my heart.
