First of all, the waitstaff should not be faulted for the chaotic, cluster-fuck that was New Years. We had reservations at 8pm and arrived by 7:40pm. We find that the restaurant did not prepare at all by moving the day-diners and, instead, your NY evening guests that paid 129 plus additional costs for upgraded champagne etc. were left standing out in the pouring rain for 30 minutes. We proceed to wait in the front "tent" for another 30 as we all mingle, feel bad for the people still standing outside, and discuss that this was already poorly executed.
We finally get our name called at 9:04pm, where we enter the tiny cafe and the only word that can describe everything is MASS CHAOS.
We fortunately sat beside a wonderful couple who informed us they got their early (earlier than most of us) and that no one knew what was going on. It was stated we would get 2 craft cocktails, a bottle of wine, and a bottle of champagne.
All of us were informed that we didn't get craft cocktails but only an old fashion that was so watered down, it was beyond disgusting. We left them sit and didn't touch them. We continued to wait for another 45 minutes before we asked what we would like for the main course. After that, we received the tiny charcuterie board and then continued to sit until 10:30ish and we received tortellini, 1scallop, and 1 mini lamb lollipop all at once.
Then we wait for another hour! (It's 11:30pm by now and we didn't get our main course nor remaining first courses). People beside and behind us hadn't even received their dinner. At this time, we are starving. Alexis, our waitress, was kind enough to bring us bread. By 11:45, we get the kale salad, lobster, and shortly after our desert all at once. All were cold.
The worst is we sat and missed new years. We were trying to eat versus enjoying the music and the surrounding because we couldn't.
This was my first time at cafe gelato while our dinning neighbors loved going there. We all agreed we would not be back. The entire night would not have been as bad if we hadn't spent $300 (plus a 70 tip and Uber) for the night to have a great experience. Instead, we left wondering what we paid for and grimacing/laughing at the horrible experience of it all.
Again, this is not against our waitstaff. Alexis was lovely and we knew it wasn't her fault. However, management and the owner should be held accountable for that night and tried to comp. or remedy the situation. None of that was offered.
I'm sure Cafe Gelato is/was great but they lost a lot of customers that night - new and old. Hopefully 2023 helps in giving them better insight on strategy and management.
