The Best Cafes in Montreal - Eater Montreal

"Gamba sources quality beans from the likes of Café Saint-Henri, Intelligentsia, Detour, 49th Parallel, and others. The interior is meant to make you feel at home in your friend’s Mile End apartment — think minimalist art prints, lots of pothos plants, and big, comfy couches — and it works. Their newest location on St-Viateur opened in late 2019." - Daniel Bromberg, Eater Staff

Excellent cafe! Really good teaching coffee and a few nice pastry options. Friendly and quick service. They have some nice comfy seating inside and a nice patio outside.

I recently discovered Caffè In Gamba at 5263 Park Ave, Montreal, Quebec H2V 4G9, and wow, what a find! 📍 The location is absolutely fantastic, with a super cool terrace that's just perfect for soaking in the Montreal vibe. You can grab a seat, relax, and enjoy watching the vibrant street life and the lovely people passing by. It's such a quintessential Montreal experience! 🤩🚶‍♀️🏙️ Now, let's talk about the coffee. This might just be the strongest coffee I’ve had in Montreal! ☕ It's definitely potent, but in the best way possible – so flavorful and incredibly aromatic. It really gives you that boost you need. For those who love a robust brew, this is your spot! 💪 While the selection of pastries isn't huge, what they have looks absolutely appetizing and is definitely worth checking out. 🥐🍰 The terrace deserves its own special praise – it's truly a magnificent spot. Whether you want to relax and clear your head, get energized with that fantastic coffee, or even catch up on some work on your laptop, it's the perfect setting. It blends relaxation, invigoration, and productivity seamlessly. 😌💻☀️ I highly recommend stopping by Caffè In Gamba for an authentic Montreal experience, incredible coffee, and that amazing terrace! #CaffeInGamba #MontrealCoffee #MileEnd #ParkAve #CoffeeMontreal #TerraceLife #StrongCoffee #CafeVibes #MontrealEats #LocalCafe #QuebecCoffee #HiddenGem #WorkFriendlyCafe #PeopleWatching #MontrealLife

Google
It was busy time when I got here but staffs were friendly, and we had a small conversation. I liked the display which beans are today’s coffee! I feel people will be interested more, and easy to know which bean is own preference! I am super happy that they have macadamia nut milk. “Amandine Moka” is interesting for me! I would order it if I am hungry~! I hope I can try it next time!

Google
great spot for medium roast coffee blends. Finally a spot that uses non Burnt coffee beans. Skip the Italian cafe hype and come here trust me

Google
Great coffee and great service. I also really like the atmosphere of shop - the music is not too loud and it’s a very inviting for getting work done.

Google
Absolutely Appalling Blueberry "Cake" I'm usually not one to leave negative reviews, but my experience at this cafe today compels me to warn others. I ordered a slice of their much-hyped **blueberry cake**, and what I received was an absolute travesty. "Tasteless" doesn't even begin to cover it. This cake had all the flavor and excitement of a damp, unsweetened sponge. I'm not sure what happened to the blueberries – perhaps they were on vacation? Because they certainly weren't present in any meaningful way. There was no tang, no sweetness, no *anything* that suggested a fruit had ever been within a mile of this pathetic excuse for a dessert. The texture was equally uninspiring – dry and crumbly in some parts, strangely gummy in others. It felt like it had been sitting out for days, longing for the sweet release of a garbage can. Frankly, I'm offended that this was offered for human consumption. Save your money and your taste buds. There are plenty of cafes out there that actually know how to bake. This isn't one of them.

Google
Very cozy cafe. Similar to the laurier location. The soy decaf latte also wasn't too roasted like the other location. It was actually smooth and balanced.

Google
Wonderful coffee shop. They have lots of small tables inside and many people were on laptops, but the outdoor seating is a computer free zone and they don’t allow laptops on Saturdays and Sundays. The baristas were friendly and accommodating and the lattes were excellent. Latte caramel was exceptionally sweet!

Yelp
Cute, bustling coffee place where there are indoor seating and an outdoor bench. Tried their very good matcha latte and tasty walnut cookie!

Yelp
Prices are pretty high for the size but overall delicious coffee! The barista was super nice and friendly when I asked her a question. It can get pretty busy and loud so probably not the best place if you want a quiet place to work or study. Parking can also be a bit challenging but a cute spot to visit if you're in the area.

Yelp
Very nice latte, friendly barista, community vibe - went from empty to full while we were there.

Yelp
This cafe opened recently on Laurie r Ave East. I tried the flat white coffee small size for $4.90. It was good but not as good as Starbucks or Second Cup. The decor is warm and they sell many coffee making gadgets. I didn't like the atmosphere. Very snooty people hanging out. They stare at people as they walk in. I think it's best to go there early morning. Less people. Server was friendly.

Yelp
Had a quick stop with a matcha latte and milano biscuit. Both were good. They did everything right on the latte, and it was unsweetened, which is how I like it. The milano was very good - it had a bright lemony flavour and nice soft mouthfeel. The barista and cashier that helped me was really friendly and the cafe is nice. They have a lovely patio out back that was getting lots of sun while we were there. I didn't buy any merch, but I really liked their shirts and tote bags with the latte art logo.

Yelp
A nice local at the bank said this place had really good coffee and boy was she right. The iced caramel latte was the best my partner has ever had in his life ... and he told the barista that was we left. He made the caramel sauce FROM SCRATCH -- no artificial Torini flavors here. The latte was perfectly sweet and creamy. The flat white was solid as well. Clean bathrooms, friendly staff. What else could you ask for?

Yelp
This coffee shop is a bit hidden, but it's really nice, the decor, the vibe, the coffee, the terrace, etc. I love spending a sunny afternoon in summer in the terrace in the back of the coffee shop, it's really lovely! I tried their iced matcha latte, it's quite good, but not the best in town. I like the tranquillity that we get at this coffee shop, so if you are here to relax, read a book, meet a friend, this is a really great spot! Enjoy your time at in Gamba!

Yelp
Absolutely lovely cafe tucked away from the busy Plateau streets, the seats and ambiance did it for me and the coffee is absolutely top quality! Also a great place for those work days you want to spend away from home while enjoying multiple cups of coffee and a vegan chocolate muffin (the perfect pairing in my opinion)

Ana C.

Yelp
I tried the matcha latte which was really good. Croissant with jam and Brie was great too.
google avatar

Joseph W.

Yelp
Very cozy cafe with a ton of beans for sale from all over the place. Their drip is very good (they have light roast) and well-priced. Highly recommend this spot.

Yelp
They will yell at you for not moving in the right direction because of covid even though it's not obvious what to do when you enter. They were arrogant with me because I didnt leave a tip, and told me to "keep my distance" even though there was no other client. I'm all for encouraging local businesses during covid, but it's not a reason for the baristas to just use that excuse to boss clients around. Also they ask you for a tip instead of letting you put it in the machine so it makes it awkward, and kind forces you to give a tip which is not ok... Ils te crient après pour garder les distances alors qu'il n'y a pas d'autres clients, et te demande le pourboire au lieu de te laisser le donner toi meme. Je ne retournerai plus à cet endroit.

Yelp
I went there at 1:30 pm. My first impression was that I was not much of a fan of the red wallpaper but the choices of drinks were delicious. The location of place was great as it is not too noisy outside and the cafe is pretty nice to work in. However, the red wall other than on red clothes and on things really turned me off. The staffs were friendly and helpful with extras like sugars and extra toppings. Overall, nice place to meet up to have a drink and work a bit I am off to discover other coffee shops.

Yelp
Caffe in Gamba is like its' name, confusing, but oddly pleasant. The prices are stellar, especially for the pizza! For only $3.49, the taste is superb for the price. Don't come here for the food however, if you are a thirsty hippo needing an oasis, the iced beverages are terrific. The service was excellent as well and they prepared the food and drink so fast I couldn't even say merci in time. The only issue I have with the place is the red wall, and the eclectic music. If you're here to study, don't expect to get an A, because the combination of blood red walls, brings out a legitimate sense of fear. Overall, everything besides the ambiance is amazing, and the prices are fantastic. Maybe stop by for a drink to go and leave before the wall colours induce a panic attack.

Yelp
I found myself at Caffe In Gamba after wandering around Mile End in need of an air-conditioned haven to study while getting cranked up on coffee. I was thrilled to taste the refreshing Cold Brew with milk and sugar that I ordered (only $3.17), only seconds before it was presented to me by a kind-spirited barista. I proceeded to use their wifi for four hours, and they never once asked me to leave, which I will be eternally grateful for. They have an array of seating choices from classic coffee shop tables, high tables, and a cozy couch section. However, I was extremely distracted by the atmosphere. The knock-off Drake music was not conducive to studying, and even more off-putting were the viciously red walls which surrounded me as though I had returned to the womb. In summation, I enjoyed my experience here, but it is by no means the best spot to study.

Yelp
I walked 40 minutes from a hotel on Peel Street just to try the espresso here (on the recommendation of one of my business hosts) and was glad I did. The walk also turned out to be a great way to see part of the city that I missed during a mostly business trip. Can't recall what espresso they were serving up but both the Cappuccino @ espresso were the best I had during my Montreal visit. Pastry was excellent as well. The uncrowded space was also nice but it may also have been a sad side-effect of the monster road construction in the neighborhood. They also get good karma points for the friendly customer who realized I was visiting and recommended Lemeac Bistro as a nice place to grab a meal before the walk home.

Yelp
The coffee shelf was impressive: 49th Parallel, Intelligentsia, Counter Culture, and even St-Henri beans neatly stacked. Unfortunately, many of the bags for sale were more than a couple weeks old (I found a few August 3rd roast dates). There was something wrong with my latté. I don't have another Counter Culture Big Trouble drink readily in memory to compare with, but it tasted way too bitter for the caramel-nutty-round description of the beans. Gut feeling tells me it's a barista failure. He was busy talking politics to another client while my drink was being prepared. Overall I wasn't left with a great impression. 3rd wave coffee is about more than just big name beans. The attention here is wrong. It should be more on the preparation of the drinks than red sofas and chic decor.

Yelp
I appreciate any place with a delightful Jesus painting where I can practise the world's #1 religion: Coffee. It really brings everyone together. And this place is a great place to gather all your friends (or disciples) and sit with a cup of holy brew. Now, I wouldn't say this is the heaven of all coffee, but it's pretty darn good. I was once betrayed into thinking my latte was skim when it was not. JUDAS! They have a wide selection of beans for sale from many indie roasters. Check the expiry date cause I've been Judas-ed twice now. Freshness commandment, broken. But, I do forgive. The space itself could use a modern spruce up. The vibe is stuck a bit in purgatory, neither here nor there, but with TLC, can easily see the light. Keep faith.

Yelp
Good beans, very nice interior, proper handiwork behind the machine, self serve water, faux crackling fireplace (on a flatscreen) are the highlights. But the coffee is lacking depth & refinement you can find at Cafe Plume, Pikolo, Myriade, Flocon, Névé, and Pourquoi Pas amongst others. Service was straight forward and formal. Tips given were unacknowledged. I tried the powdered sugar dusted chausson aux pommes: definitely skip it. This should be a last-resort purchase only if you're dying of hunger. Browning: non-existent, butter/apple flavor: I searched and did not find, texture: lacking crunch but was somewhat flaky. Come for the quiet, warm, relaxed atmosphere and to bask in the short-lived winter afternoon sunshine streaming through the front window.

Yelp
I went on a walk until parc Avenue and I found out that they changed locations to St Viateur and St Dominique. I bought a cortado and an ice coffee and the barista charged me 11.50. Good quality but really overpriced. These are Starbucks prices.
google avatar

Shilei Z.

Yelp
Friendly baristas, good drinks and big selection of beans to go. Very good light roast espresso. Comfy couches in the back offering decent sense of privacy in a relaxed atmosphere. This place has some bad reviews. I mean this is probably not the place if you're looking to be on display.
google avatar

Nick J.

Yelp
They charged me 45 cents to put milk in my iced coffee. They asked "would you like milk in that?" and 45 cents got added to my bill. Apparently here is no free milk here. Not mentioned anywhere on the menu. Criminals like this deserve zero stars.
google avatar

Rebel Y.

Yelp
I don't go here often because I don't like this stretch of Parc (avenue du Parc is really busy right around here) but when I do I am reminded of what a great cup of coffee can taste like. Strong and solid. Pet peeve that probably reveals too much about my fussiness: I hate the sound that the chairs here make on the floor. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me. Spring and Summer bonus: Terrasse.

Remi B.

Yelp
Nice chill spot with great coffee. The staff are nice and friendly. They sell ground coffee which is great as well. It is my regular preferred spot for a good cup of latte or flat white. It is usually rather busy, it seems the neighbourhood appreciates the place. :)
google avatar

Fiona W.

Yelp
This cafe often gives me surprises for a truly delicious and rich drink. Always order a latte as my longstanding choice . Lately I tend to go for a full-bodied version, but keeping a balance of bitter and acidic flavor. So I tried a Gibraltar, served in a small Libbey "Gibraltar" tumbler glass. To me it is pretty much like a Cortado, espresso-milk ratio is about 1:2, but served in a 4-oz glass. A place I would want to stay for hours on a summer afternoon or a weekday evening after a long day of work.
google avatar

Martin S.

Yelp
The coffee is the best in the City of Montreal and the best i've had in all of Quebec. Might even be better than Toronto too. One of the best coffee i've had in Canada. Keep brewing!
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
For Coffee Lovers.. Love it! I usually don't drink lattes, but there latte is devine! Really worth it! I spend definitely too much time there....

Mario M.

Yelp
Over rated !!! Super pretentious. I ask for a mix of coconut milk and almond milk for my latte and the tale guy with a beard told me, in a cold manner, "you gotta pick, coconut or almond ! We don't make specials" I left without ordering and went next door to the cozy and warm Resonance café and I asked for the exact same thing and nice girl told me, with a big smile, "Sure, we do that. I'll make you a good one " I left Resonance café satisfied.

Kari H.

Yelp
I like the cafe because the coffee is very delicious. Yes the decor is a bit like some tacky boudoir, but who cares are you really going to go down the street to Banc Public which has nice decor but the coffee tastes like burnt toast? No way! I get a latte and honestly this is addictive. Its so good I came back every day.
google avatar

Risa D.

Yelp
I really do like this cafe. They sell and serve excellent coffee in a wide variety, and it's a nice balance of cozy and spacious to feel like you could be happy hanging out here and working for a while without being in the way. If you're trundling up Parc avenue in the blowing snow as I have been all too often lately you'll be glad to know this place exists, tucked beside a stalwart Videotron in a condo storefront serving serious brew. But I have to say, there is something a little cockeyed here, stylewise. Something that just rubs my sense and sensibilities a little bit the wrong way. Maybe it's because I never seem to totally love the taste of the St Henri beans, or maybe it's that all-red walls and panettone piles give rise to my otherwise well-suppressed murderous tendencies, either way it's probably just me and you should probably go there and see for yourself.
google avatar

Isabelle L.

Yelp
Good study spot, gets noisy around 3pm. There's free wifi , and got the cortado. Tables are slightly wobbly, but a lot of variety. Service is great.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
It's a cafe so the coffee should be good: done. Excellent coffee, lovingly and expertly pulled. Counter help was really great, very knowledgeable and helpful. This isn't a place to just run in and get a quick cup; they take their time to make it right. The decor is very eclectic so that pretty much anyone from this Mile End hood will feel at home. Not only was the staff friendly but so were the other patrons; it felt like hanging out at a club that you might someday become a member of.
google avatar

Renee P.

Yelp
I like this place. They are always friendly and never seem to mind if I'm there working for a while. The coffee is good, they've got a great little patio and there is usually lots of room.
google avatar

Talia F.

Yelp
Large selection of coffee beans to buy. They know their coffee. Delicious 3rd wave cappuccinos. Weird and confused decor that doesn't really fit with the style of the place, so don't be put off. The coffee is one of the best in town.
google avatar

D A.

Yelp
Nice little spot - great coffee and sweet decor. As others have mentioned, service is spotty and it's not volume-dependent. The other issue is layout is a bit oblong and people hog the chairs so space is limited on the inside. Skip sitting there and take the coffee to go.
google avatar

Agile R.

Yelp
In Gamba once served what was arguably the best espresso in Montreal. However, over the past year it has deteriorated somewhat. It still is a decent place to sit and have a good coffee. They also sell some high end coffee beans, including Intelligentsia (my favourite). The couches are quite good, and make the experience particularly pleasant. Free WiFi is available.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
Great soy lattes! Employees are very nice too! Awesome selection of coffee/espresso beans also! Every time I come to Montreal I try to stop in here. Free wifi and lots of places to sit! There's outdoor seating too, which is nice in the Sumer months.

Shawn X.

Yelp
I think Ben L. is right. They offer a wide variety of brews -- rotating them so that there's usually two choices -- but *sometimes* I don't think they know them, all that well? I've come here and had coffees that are great; other times, unremarkable. Apparently, to pull great espressos you have to know your beans and I suspect there's not enough focus. I'm also deducting a star because of the pastries-from-a-box, thing. On the PLUS side, the owner's a great guy and he's fighting a battle with the Office de la langue francaise over the extra "f" in Caffe. Seriously. So he deserves support. (he's French Quebecois himself, btw).
google avatar

Eva G.

Yelp
A friend of a friend recommended the cappuccino here. It's $3.85 to stay, $3.95 to go. It was good, but not anything deeply amazing. It looks like you can sit around for a long time without being scrutinized.

Angie D.

Yelp
The espresso is great. The problem is the service. On two different occasions the server behind the counter has been petulant and rude. When someone asks, "what kind of cookies are those S-shaped cookies?", answering "they're S cookies" and looking bored and annoyed is not helpful. Would not go back just because of that. Which sucks, because the coffee is great, but shouldn't come with a side of serious attitude.

Food T.

Yelp
An allonge is not an Americano with less water dumped in. If your tastes run toward fruity espresso indifferently made with a slight sense of superiority, this place is for you.
google avatar

Maximilian S.

Yelp
Quaint coffee shop with great atmosphere, friendly service and amazing coffee! I ordered a gibraltar (suggested by the espresso barista) and my friend ordered a latte. Both were great! We also shared a whipped ricotta cheese croissant which was to die for! And the price was very affordable: less expensive than Starbucks!
google avatar

Faustino J.

Yelp
A cafe is not only a place where you can have a coffe or tea a cafe is a place where you want to relax and feel good unwind from life's stress, well Gamba which means Good well in Italian , has succeeded hands down not only their coffee is great but the ambiance decor and their staff make the whole outing enjoyable and reserved. Zen ...a place to relax while reading your favorite book drinking an excellent latte.

C T.

Yelp
I just finished my first espresso at Caffe In Gamba and while it was far from the worst I've had in Montreal (a city drenched in horrible coffee) it doesn't have me worshiping the barista who prepared it. Acceptable but not mind blowing. Perhaps, as a previous reviewer pointed out, its a hit or miss kind of place and deserves another try. As for the ambiance, it's a nice place to settle in with a book or computer but I think they have a few too many tables jammed into the space. They do have a nice selection of beans. Bottom line: If it's in your neighborhood it's likely the place for all you caffeine needs. However I'm not convinced it's worth the pilgrimage from anywhere else.

Gen G.

Yelp
Good café au lait (maybe not Humble Lion/Dispatch/Pikolo calibre, but good), and a nice, relaxed place to hang out for a long chat with a friend. I would definitely return.

Mahsa Y.

Yelp
It is really a hit or miss place. Sometimes the coffee is amazing, absolutely divine. And sometimes it is bitter and painful to swallow. But when it is done right, it is so good, it is worth trying it out more than once if your first experience isn't great. The baristas are friendly and the atmosphere is inviting and friendly.

J J.

Yelp
great lattes - strong espresso, thick, creamy frothed milk - all @ a good price. Free wifi as well, lots of seating options. Cute patio!
