12 Trattorias to Try in Italy, From North to South

"This award-winning family restaurant almost always serves the local pumpkin ravioli and focuses on traditional proteins—goose, capon, rabbit—alongside generous charcuterie and freshwater fish sourced thanks to proximity to the Po River, offering hearty, territory-driven cooking between Cremona and Mantua." - Marco Bolasco

"Overlooking a picturesque Renaissance square, the café here dates back to the early 19C and the trattoria shortly after. Today, the decor is a nostalgic mix of styles from the mid-19C to the mid-20C, including Art Nouveau. The restaurant not only appeals to the eyes but also to the tastebuds thanks to its careful selection of top-quality local ingredients which are served in family-style dishes typical of the Po Valley, with a broad selection of recipes from the different provinces in this extensive region (stuffed marubini pasta in broth, culatello ham, boiled meats served with home-made mostarda etc). There’s also a boutique selling food and wine for anyone looking for a souvenir to take home." - Michelin Inspector

The cuisine delights with the impeccable quality of its dishes: plates are meticulously presented, and the menu offers a fine array of flavors. Portions, though slightly modest, remain elegant and refined. The terrace, overlooking a charming square, adds an extra touch of charm to an already welcoming setting. While nothing detracts from the culinary merits, the experience is somewhat diminished by a lack of warmth in the service: staff were seldom smiling and showed little inclination to guide diners in their choices. A pity, for without this shortcoming, the moment would have been truly enchanting.

Wow, this was worth the detour. Possibly one of the best lunches I can remember. Each course was remarkable with flavour texture and preparation. Stickleback is difficult to get right but this was astoundingly good. Thank you all in the family.

Overall a nice place, good cuisine. But way too expensive considering the village where the restaurant is, that is in the middle of nowhere. You cannot price it as if you were in Milan.

Wonderfully warm reception in a truly historical location off the beaten track. Although we arrived 10 minutes before closing, we were still treated to a feast of cold cuts, cheeses and local delicacies. Can’t wait to come back to sample the full menu.

Awesome restaurant. Excellent service, kind staff, best local dishes tried so far in the zone. Highly recommended. At a fair price! This place doesn't even need this review for locals, everyone that lives here knows it's famous and people comes here for this from far away.

We went there for the Apero. The environment is so beautiful and calm. We had some Spritz and they were good. Their syrups should be better though, either homemade or better brands. There was an impolite message for people with children though, a bit dry for hospitality.

Is hard to find a better place for contemporary trattorias in Italy. Tradition at its best in a wonderful venue, kind and expressive service and really interesting wine list. A must in the area
