Where To Eat With Someone Who’s Already Eaten Everywhere

"Located on a stretch of North Hollywood generally reserved for car mechanics and acting studios, Cahuenga General Store feels stepping into another world. Or at the very least, the mid-1800s. The all-wood floors are old and creaky, there are chairs hanging from the ceiling, and there’s homemade soap on the shelves. It’s not until you spot the cash register in the back that you realize you’re still in modern-day LA - and at a coffee/sandwich shop. The 30-item menu can be a little overwhelming at first, but you’ll be happy as long as you order anything that involves the house-made pesto. If you hang out long enough, you’ll catch some live music on the stage in the corner." - brant cox

Cahuenga General Store Review - North Hollywood - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Walking into Cahuenga General Store is like walking into another world, or at the very least, walking into WestWorld. This former prop shop turned sandwich cafe looks like a real 19th-century general store with creaky wooden floors, chairs hanging from the ceiling, and homemade soap on the shelves. There’s also a fantastic side patio now where open mic nights happen weekly. But the real reason you’re here is for the sandwiches. With over 30 different kinds, the menu is a little overwhelming, but our strategy is to stick with anything that has pesto on it. They make it in-house and it’s incredible." - Brant Cox

This is such a sweet old timey hidden gem in the valley. Decorations on point, very nostalgic with a great deli menu. Smoothies, soups, sandwiches, etc. wonderful little spot and they have a back patio great for summer

Google
Hidden Gem in the Noho Area. It should be crowded everyday with people! Is such a beautiful experience to be served great food and drinks by the owner her family. Support your local small business and come sip some coffee!!

Google
Had a great lunch here last week. I had a Muffaletta, my son had the "Rachel", and my granddaughter had the "Elvis". All three sandwiches were excellent. It's a comfortable, friendly place. We'll be back soon to try more of their unique sandwiches.

Google
got the New Yorker sandwich, 10/10! Manhattan is over! Queens is dethroned! Lovely ambiance, and even better food made with quality Boars Head meats and cheeses. Would leave money in my will for this sandwich

Google
I love this place! I recently discovered it and try to go there when I’m in Toluca Lake. The food is fresh, affordable and tasty. The atmosphere is definitely part of the experience eating there. Fun, quirky and down home!

Google
This place is great. I’ve tried 7 Sandos and they’re all more than solid. My favorite is the Henry Miller, never a disappointment. The vibe is low key, genuinely think old-timey general store. If you’re in the area, don’t miss it.

Google
LOVE this spot. Low key eatery with a country esthetic and every type of sandwich combination you could hope for. Plenty of vegetarian options for non meat eaters as well. The staff is very kind and helpful and there is tons of fun vintage memorabilia to catch your eye while you sit and eat. It feels like you’re stepping out of the LA rush for a few which is always a welcome change of pace.

Yelp
I've been coming to Cahuenga General Store for over a decade. My most recent visit this past April was the best yet. We ordered two sandwiches, the New Yorker (roast beef, ham, and cheddar) and the Bleu Bird (sliced chicken, bacon, bleu cheese, Swiss, caramelised onions, and tart apple slices. Both were served on warm French rolls with a raw veg mix of carrots and cucumbers, salted and peppered. One may select a bag of chips instead of the crudités when ordering. The New Yorker was excellent, but the Bleu Bird was superb. The bread and the chicken were so good, and I don't even like Swiss or bacon, but they elevated the flavour of the sandwich rather than overpowering it, complemented by the crisp, juicy apple. We also ordered a bottled root beer and a lemonade. The lemonade was made from scratch right in front of us, and was perfectly tart-sweet and refreshing. We sat outside on the patio, which was breezy and shady on a typical April SoCal day. Hummingbirds and butterflies buzzed by. The pleasant and efficient waitstaff brought everything out to us when it was ready. We had the patio to ourselves on an April Thursday. There is indeed an old-timey-looking "general store" inside - an 1800s Wild West aesthetic with antique items on display, and a few products like pretty notecards available for purchase. I'm not sure about parking as we live within walking distance, but on a weekday, there should be some street parking available right in front.

Yelp
Looking for a lunch spot in the area, I saw great reviews for the Cahuenga General Store that convinced me to give it a try! I went on a weekend afternoon, and the person taking my order was friendly and willing to answer menu questions. They offer a wide variety of sandwiches, beverages, and salads (and there is a chalkboard with daily specials too). I ended up getting one of their sandwich specials: the Cali Club. This was a turkey club sandwich that included pepperoncini and smashed avocado, and it was a tasty and filling meal. For sandwiches, you have an option of kettle chips or mixed vegetables for your sandwich side, and I enjoyed the chips! The fresh lemonade was also a plus, and there was ample interior and exterior seating.

Yelp
I've been driving by this place for years, always wanted to stop by and just haven't had the time. Finally decided to stop in for an early dinner today. It's got such a nice vibe to it, very vintage. The decor sends you back in time and they have a little setup in the corner where I assume they sometimes have live music. Their outdoor patio is beautiful, plant heaven. I happened to be the only person eating in today, so service was pretty quick, sweet and super attentive. I ordered the half sandwich and requested the Oscar Wilde curry sandwich. The side salad was a little average, but very edible and a good size. The sandwich was truly the star of the show. Didn't realize I was such a big fan of curry sandwiches, it had cashews in it and gave such a lovely crunchy texture. Soooo good and would return for a full sized sandwich, asap. The half sandwich combo consists of a half sandwich of your choosing, salad or soup and a can soda for about $17.50. They have many can soda options. Overall a very relaxing, fun dining experience. Might opt for the soup next time.

Yelp
I love this place. It's the rare place that's open and serving espresso past 6pm. And in general- the sandwiches are great, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, clean (tiny, cute) bathroom, and usually available street parking. What's not to like?

Yelp
A hidden gem with an old saloon vibe to it. The store is a lot of fun with vintage goods both for sale and decoration. To make it even better, they also have a coffee bar and a menu with seating inside and outside. We ordered an iced matcha latte and the caesar salad. The items were very good and the outdoor patio was full of plants and greenery. There was easy street parking when we visited during the week for lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
Took my mom here for a nice lunch. It's a very unique place with a lot of trinkets. We shared a sandwich and a salad, and had an iced matcha. The service was great the food was amazingly satisfying.

Yelp
What a tasty little secret. It's like Jonathon's mercantile and little house on the prairie had a fun baby.

Yelp
I have never noticed this place or even heard about it even though I passed by it so many times. Today while looking for a coffee place on Yelp this came up so o had to check it out. What a nice find. Cute cafe with so much charm, so many vintage items all around. They have many sandwiches and salads to choose from. I ordered the Henry Miller Sandwich which was super delicious. Only $13 ...I loved every bite of it. Made with feta cheese, pepperoncini, avocado, cucumber, tomato, onion, tapenade and Italian dressing on toasted ciabatta bread .... Yummm. Will go back just to eat that again. All the sandwiches sounded good though so I'll have to try others as well. I also ordered an iced coffee and it was good. The prices are good and the customer service was super. I took a few minutes to sit at their outside patio to enjoy my sandwich, it was full of beautiful plants. It felt like I'm at a garden someplace. So beautiful. I'm so happy I found this place. Will be back again.

Yelp
The food was excellent service was fast and very friendly. I had a roast beef and provolone on and everything bagel it was amazing I added avocado to set it off it was perfect. Steve had a chicken with pesto on a French roll the food was amazing. Definitely will try that again.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. It's a sleepy area of town and hidden gem.
google avatar

Michiko M.

Yelp
The place is soooo cute! Right next door to an acting class studio. The people working there let me friend and I stay past closing as we were unaware of when they closed. No food but got their green machine smoothie which was good.

Yelp
Wish I could go 3.5 but the wait time is a bit insane. I've been several times it's near our office even when they are only making one sandwich you will wait like 15 minutes minumum. I'm fine waiting but not when I need to go back to my job and 3 people are in kitchen chatting and standing around. I really like the place sandos are good but they have to be respectful that people need to get back to office. Several of my coworkers have stopped going due to the wait. It's a shame because seems like nice family owned spot I just cant wait 30 min which is what happened when I ordered 2 salads. every time I go back I regret it because of this.

Yelp
This place is so cute-- and I mean that in the very best sense of the word. It's got a funky decor, kitted out like an old timey genera store, that gives the visitors an immediate sense of well-being. It's cozy! It has a simple menu-- sandwiches and salads, mostly, but with a twist (for example I had a ham & cheese on toast but it had slices of pear and watercress on it!). You can take your order to go, eat it in the "general Store" dining room, or take it out to the invitingly landscaped and shaded patio. For a quick bite in North Hollywood, I recommend Cahuenga Cafe!

Yelp
So friggin good! Awesome selection of sandwiches, adorable vibe, crackin patio. Can't wait to come back

Yelp
Obsessed! My new favorite work from place with a gorgeous patio. Inside is adorable and the service excellent. I'll be here once a week, thanks very much! Ordered the Cobb salad that had perfect ratios of every ingredient with a delicious honey balsamic vinegrette, the house made croutons made it fantastic I loved the local post cards for sale inside!
google avatar

Nessa G.

Yelp
My sandwich was as so delicious!!! I had the blue bird! If you like blue cheese it's a must try!! And the owner Anita and her team are so sweet!

Maria K.

Yelp
This place has existed right under my nose and I haven't known it until today. It truly looks like time hasn't changed a thing here. Good food, nice service, and interesting ambiance. Worth a visit for sure! I tried the Feta Basil with chicken, it was light and pleasant. The Double R, was filling and flavorful. Given how close is it to me, I will definitely love to come back and try more.

Yelp
I enjoyed this little place. Joseph was great and the sandwiches were delicious (ran out of chicken tho). Their coconut ginger smoothie was delicious!

Yelp
I wish I found this place sooner! This quaint cafe had a charming patio with a beautiful garden nursery. Great customer service, the staff was very friendly and kind. I had the pesto chicken sandwich, which I highly recommend. The pesto wasn't over powering at all and wasn't heavy. I also got the chicken Caesar salad. I suggest adding the sliced chicken with it. Their servings are generous and the homemade croutons were excellent

Ehcrama M.

Yelp
This is my go-to! I'm not a sandwich person, I usually don't crave sandwiches, but after trying their Chloe Chicken Pesto I'm there almost every other week getting it for take out. The flavor is always consistent and it never disappoints. Service is great, they always greet you and make you feel comfortable. Love the Ambiance and the interior decor!
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Awesome old school sandwich spot! Tasty food, solid prices, and funky western Americana vibes. Definitely a fun part of the neighborhood. Nostalgia and comfort with fresh sandwiches and coffee. I'll be back again soon!

Philip D.

Yelp
Great service and good food make me a happy camper. The owner at the register is the nicest person. Friendly and efficient. The Cobb salad was a good size and delicious. The ftbrbbbfct (haha) sandwich was tasty. The Italian dressing and feta made the sandwich. We enjoyed sitting inside and looking at the decorations, but the outdoor patio is relaxing too.

Santa M.

Yelp
What a lovely little spot. We had the italian sandwich, but we can't wait to go back for more. The decor is so fun, the service is attentive and warm, the sandwich was amazingly tasty and fresh. We'll be back to see the kitties at the bookstore nearby and to try more of the food at this place.

Tailoni J.

Yelp
yesterday I was looking for a lunch spot and this randomly came up. It was about two minutes away from where I was at so I decided to give it a shot. They have now earn themselves a regular, and I will be driving from downtown LA OFTEN lol. Their chicken pesto sandwich was so good and the chips that come with it I don't know if they're housemaid or not but they're delicious decoration is super cute and they have some outside seating. It's a really good lunch spot definitely would recommend.

Isabel G.

Yelp
Very nice atmosphere, the workers are so kind and their energy just lifts the mood and adds to the "small town" vibe. Food is delicious, they have creative names for the items on the menu 10/10 am coming back
google avatar

Jdot S.

Yelp
Love this cute little general store that serves delicious sandwiches. Have tried the muffuletta, Italian and chicken pesto and all have hit the spot when in need of a sammy fix.
google avatar

Amber K.

Yelp
The owner who took my order wAs personable and helpful (pride of ownership like a true mom and pop shop) in choosing my sandwich which I preferred- SF- over the chicken pesto- which is my go to at home but not here. My daughter tried all the breads which were made fresh. Local spot with lots of choices and most of all a beautiful patio. Note- I will say it's tough to open door with a stroller
google avatar

Cindy A.

Yelp
Duck in out of the sun and grab a delicious sandwich and an espresso. It feels you've stepped back in time - very cool toys and decor of yesteryear adorn the shelves and walls! And best yet? Easy on the planet. This store will take your reusable mug and wrap your sandwich in paper, or orders come in a cardboard box. They accommodate your custom requests. A friendly rest for a hot and hungry soul!
google avatar

Queen S.

Yelp
Great service and a great lunch! Wonderful patio but also a fun interior if you want to stay in. Definitely check it out, they have something for everyone!
google avatar

Barbara H.

Yelp
Such a cute little hidden gem. Definitely going back! Super yummy lunch, great smoothie.

Sarah V.

Yelp
I've had lunch here and absolutely loved the sandwich and salad I picked. I came again to order coffee and realized they had a patio to the side that is absolutely stunning. So peaceful. A perfect place to get work done or relax. I'll be coming here more often!
google avatar

Bree W.

Yelp
This place makes the tastiest, freshest sandwiches ever! The selection is superb, but I always get the vegetarian minus red onion. Today we dined in for a change and it was lovely. My three year old had a lot of questions about the baskets, the old pots and pans and dishes. We're new-ish to the neighborhood but I would count this as a favorite spot.
google avatar

MR M.

Yelp
This place is, aesthetics wise, one of the most incredible places I've been in LA. the food was good, I had the pesto sandwich and have to go back for more. But everything is for sale, antiques and oddities both and the staff is jovial. Felt like being back in New England.
google avatar

Sasha F.

Yelp
I stop by Cahuenga General store when I come to the neighborhood for my acting class. The place has a unique look of an old-school general store. Aside from food, the place offers cute antique pieces of jewelry and knick-knacks in the tradition of a general store. Despite all the little things on display, everything is clean and neat. Food-wise, it offers a variety of sandwiches with a few daily specials displayed on the board. I usually get something that has grilled chicken as main ingredient. I love that each sandwich comes with a few carrot sticks and cucumber slices! The employees are nice and helpful, always ready to give a suggestion. The food comes out pretty fast and they bring it out to you. There is lots of seating available and it looks like the kind of place that would be great to use as a base for your work on laptop. I always look forward to coming here, the only unfortunate thing is that I believe they're closed on Sundays.
google avatar

Eyram K.

Yelp
I absolutely adore this place!! As if the aesthetic wasn't enough, the staff is kind and the sandwiches are made with love. This is a great go-to spot to try something new. Making it my mission to try all their sandwiches.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
What a cute store and great sandwiches! I love having such a great place so local to where I moved. Food was great and will definitely be back here frequently!
google avatar

Allan A.

Yelp
My favorite sandwich shop!! I like others but none compare to this place. I am slowly trying every sandwich on the menu. The staff goes out of their way to prepare some of the most flavorful sandwich combinations. The atmosphere is wonderful. It takes you back to the old general store and you feel like you are hanging out in Hooterville(some of you will get the reference) Just missing Arnold(the pig) Enjoy!!!
google avatar

Charles B.

Yelp
wow what a gem very quaint and cute but with high quality lunch goods to back it up can't get enough of this place. homemade chippies.
google avatar

Rollo T.

Yelp
Amazing hidden gem. Great service, food, coffee, awesome atmosphere, like going back in time, when things were much better than today. You can sit inside, just out front, or very large and well done side outdoor patio area.

Austin N.

Yelp
I love the inside of the store, it is so cool and such a vibe. The food was amazing and reasonably priced. Perfect.
google avatar

Rami K.

Yelp
The new patio is cute, spacious and floral. Sandwich was good. Coffee good. The owner was very sweet.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place! What a local gem. Anita and her staff are so nice and friendly. The sandwiches and salads are delicious and unique.
google avatar

Yelp
Was craving a healthy sandwich, searched on post-mates and found Cahuenga General store a half mile from my house in North Hollywood. Perfect choice. The sandwich is light but filling and very tasty. I got "Chloe's Pesto Chicken" sandwich and it is very very good. The softest ciabatta bread I have ever had. Tasty, healthy ingredients. Cheap prices. Also the perfectly trimmed and fitted lettuce and how they constructed the sandwich so neatly and with detail shows that they really care. I also had a cold brew with the perfect touch of hazelnut syrup and almond milk. Not too sweet. Perfect for me who is trying to keep my sugar intake down. Absolutely perfect. Come support this business and help them continue to serve our area!
google avatar

Kelsey W.

Yelp
Why didn't I come here sooner? I literally think it's because there's a tree in front of the sign, but shame on me. This place is a gem: the staff is warm and helpful, the food is great, the music is mellow, and the atmosphere is something I've been looking for in this neck of town!
google avatar

C.J. V.

Yelp
This place is an absolute gem. Wonderful people and truly great food - not to mention the great vibe! They have every possible combination of anything that can be put between bread, and there's not a bad sandwich in the bunch! I truly love this place and try to stop by every time I'm in NoHo.
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped by there for a noon lunch. We came by a week ago but they were filming. We both ordered sandwiches however she ordered what was supposed to be a small salad. Meanwhile I looked around, the first thing I noticed was the pot bellied stove and the old Coke a Cola reefer. Numerous classic antique kitchen wear was noticed. Even the restroom was anticipated. The sandwiches were full of fresh meats. Mine ham and beef, provolone cheese and fresh lettuice. She had a pesto, chicken on ciabatta. With a small side salad, which came in a Huge bowl. I had a expresso malt. All the bread was fresh too. The malt was delicious. Loved the service. Love the place. The place also has a small stage in the corner for live events. Definately deserves a repeat visit.
