4 Under-the-Radar New Restaurants to Check Out in New Orleans Right Now - Eater New Orleans

"Cajun Flames is a new casual seafood restaurant from the celebrated chefs behind modern Indian restaurant LUFU NOLA: Sarthak Samantray, Aman Kota, and Sachin Darade. Opened in October in the former home of Saint John, it offers seafood gumbo, alligator tails, barbecue shrimp and grits, grilled octopus, steak frites, and oysters four ways. It's open for lunch and dinner, Thursday through Tuesday." - Clair Lorell

My experience at Cajun Flames was absolutely incredible! The food was the real star of the show—authentic, flavorful, and made with care. The gumbo was rich and hearty, packed with bold flavors that hit all the right notes. The portions were generous, and everything was seasoned to perfection. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, taking the time to explain the menu and recommend dishes based on our preferences. Whether you’re a fan of Cajun cuisine or trying it for the first time, Cajun Flames is an absolute must-visit. The combination of authentic flavors, great service, and a fun atmosphere will keep me coming back for more!

Beautiful place. Good atmosphere. Food is amazing! The oysters were delicious. Poy Boy was huge and the best around. Bread is crispy and soft at the same time. Tomato basil soup was also the best I've had.

Google
First time in NOLA, and we came across with this restaurant, food was amazing! The Cajun fries are to die for, my partner and I tried the gator bite which were good, I couldn't finished but he did! Jitu our server was exceptional, and kept checking on our table ans refilling our cokes.

Google
By far one of the best places to stop in New Orleans from gumbo. Service is 10 out of 10 front of house is extraordinary and the kitchen turns out masterpieces a rare five star review would give 10 stars if possible

Google
Absolutely beautiful bar and restaurant. Very clean and very well staffed. Their bartender tori didn’t hesitate to answer our questions and their waitstaff even came out to help us with menu options. We got apps, entrees, and dessert and it was all wonderful ! Highly recommend ❤️

Google
The freshest oysters in the quarter! So delicious, don’t skip the octopus and the bread pudding either! The cocktail menu is sublime, I tried a gin based, a take on a mojito and this PB&J whisky based one that were so smooth. Great place to sit at the bar or for big groups!

Google
The food was pretty good. I think this is the only place in NOLA where you can get veggies. I'm turning into a walking plate of etouffee, andoillu sausage and roux gumbo. The food was over sauced. The waiter was adorable. The restroom is on the second floor, so if you've got knee issues, go before yo get there. The portions were great. But the food just isn't that versatile. I asked for salad. They said it's already tossed in dressing. The Brussel sprouts were swimming in sauce, but overall, it was pretty good.

Yelp
I've Been seeing this spot on social media so I browsed the menu and it caught my eye! It's pretty new so we didn't have a problem getting a seat granted it was around 5pm on a Friday. The resturant is beautiful and in a great area (French Quarter) it took over the space that St. John was recently in. The service was great and the waiter was fast with everything. The food was outstanding! For appetizers we got: Gumbo- This was a big shocker I didn't expect it to be this good packed with flavor. Calamari- fried to perfection the batter was well seasoned and the meat wasn't chewy. Fried Ribs- Very tender, fried and nicely seasoned I just wish it was a better sauce to dip it in! Entrees: Half a rooster- A fried half of chicken breast and wing. To be honest it was well done, had a great taste. It came with a marinara sauce under it initially it threw me off but it complements it well. Shrimp & Grits- The Grits were buttery and salted nicely not too watery. The shrimp were cooked pretty well the sauce made the whole dish! Overall I love what they have going on wishing many blessings to them.

Yelp
Overall, a cute, new spot with friendly staff and quick service. I wanted a little nibble and was craving oysters. I ordered the Oyster Trio: Included Rockefeller, Pimento Cheese, and Herb & Garlic Butter served with the most delicious crostinis. They were all of decent size and the Garlic Butter & Herb were my favorite of the 3. Pimento Cheese came in second and the Rockefeller was my least favorite but I'm not a big fan of a lot of toppings on my oysters so take my review with a grain of salt as my favorite way of eating oysters are raw, fried, and charbroiled. If you love oysters with toppings this might be just what your taste buds crave. I wasn't planning on drinking but when I saw that they were infusing their vodka for their Bloody Mary's, how could I refuse. Not bad but I prefer a hint of a thicker texture with mine.

Yelp
We started with a dozen raw oysters and the alligator bites. My three year old LOVED the ! We got one each of the shrimp and oyster poboys with truffle fries. all of the food was excellent and the truffle fries WERE TO DIE FOR!!!! we experienced no wait time and the restaurant was nice and clean. Beautiful counter tops throughout.

Yelp
Happened to walk by and the menu caught my eye. Figured I would give it a try because I wanted some Cajun food and I'm so glad I did. The food was amazing! Great location. Very calm atmosphere even with Mardi Gras going on. An amazing place. I got the seafood pasta and the gumbo and it was incredible

Yelp
Incredible experience! The food was one of the best dishes of our lives, the staff was lovely and the ambiance was great! We tried the Oyster Trio and it knocked our socks off! 11/10 recommend! We've been thinking about them all night and can't wait to come back for more!

Yelp
Char grilled oysters . Delicious. Charred sprouts were fine. Too much glaze and the peanuts? Added nothing . Then we ordered the steak frites. "Medium rare". The waiter gave me a weird look. What he brought to the table was a crime worthy of a 911 call. I would like to report a murder. Go look up "medium rare strip steak images" then look at this "steak". No. Waiter was extremely puzzled why we were sending it back. You tell me.

Yelp
Seafood pasta was incredible. Cool little spot that's easy to walk to in DT NOLA. Friendly staff and good service.

Le T.

Yelp
Pros: Nice seating. Attentive staff. Cons: Food was too salty, especially the gumbo. Fried frog legs were definitely not fresh. Both the fried dishes of frog legs & gater bites were salty.

Joelle B.

Yelp
Our server, Adam was great, atmosphere was beautiful, the burger was one of the best I've ever had. Red beans & rice were good as well, not the best I've ever had.... But I would absolutely order again!

Yelp
Great respite from galavanting in the quarter- best Pimm's cups I've had and the Cajun Oysters are melt in your mouf good! Everything we had was so tasty. Great service too. If you can get a seat on the balcony at night, it's a fantastic spot for people watching and listening to the tunes on the street. Thank you, Cajun Flames! You made our weekend at Funk fest that much better. xoxo

Yelp

Yelp
Great drinks! Awesome service, the bartender told us about his infused booze and made us a delicious martini using it. Beautiful bar too

Josh A.

Yelp
Was walking around looking for a place to eat with friends and found this place. We ordered a bunch of appetizers including the frog legs which were very well seasoned crispy and delicious! The oyster trio which were all good but the Cajun style took the cake. The gumbo and red beans from the sampler trio were delicious but the jambalaya was just alright. Tasted more like dirty rice. The crab and oyster dip was a little grainy but fresh! The drinks were strong The service was ok waiter seemed a little confused but was nice. The booths were nice and clean and you can see the chefs making your food. Overall 8/10 experience

Yelp
We're a little skeptical to try this place as it didn't have a lot of reviews and seemed somewhat new. We were pleasantly surprised when we received our food. We both ordered the shrimp po'boys and they were excellent. The portion sizes were huge and the shrimp was fried perfectly. The service was also great. Menu for lunch was a bit limited but everything seems to be very well made. Would highly recommended! Unfortunately we didn't take pics as we were so hungry.

Yelp
My wife and I came down here for our anniversary and had reservations at the nearby place. we stopped in here for drinks and man I'm glad we did. the bar manager has made his own custom cocktail with tequila infused fruit. Typically I don't like tequila but damn. this drink was amazing. The oysters were great too! the customer service was a delight and as a new place you GOTTA go for the drinks.

Yelp
We truly enjoyed our dinner. The frog legs were excellent as were the grilled octopus and the shrimp and grits. The decor was tasteful, and the service was attentive.

Yelp
Just visited based on previous reviews. The gumbo and jambalaya were awesome. I read the above rave reviews to Koushik. He smiled and continued to provide great service 5 hrs after his last mention. I would recommend Cajun Flames to anyone for a visit it's very close to Cafe du Monde and Central Grocery, so you can't go wrong!

Yelp
Stopped in to have a drink after getting kicked out of the R Bar because one of our party had on a red Trump hat. Ended up staying for about 90 minutes as the atmosphere was so friendly and inviting. Tori (the bar hostess...she was so much more than just a bartender...provided great appetizer and drink recommendations. Even though she was busy with drink orders, she was friendly and informative about the restaurant/bar and it's renovation. The drinks were delicious...margarita and passion fruit mojito...the raw oysters fresh and reasonably priced for the location. We had the oyster/crab dip...delicious. I highly recommend Cajun Flames for drinks and appetizers and/or dinner ... the staff, the atmosphere, the food and drink were all exceptional! Thanks to Tori for making what started out to be a depressing evening so much better

Yelp
My fiancé and I sat at the bar, had a couple draft beers and a meal. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad & shrimp po boy and he ordered Cajun sampler plate. Great flavors, fresh ingredients! Their bar manager, Koushik, was very friendly and attentive. We definitely recommend trying it out. Finishing up our meal with their bread pudding The ambiance laid back and inviting. I love the murals on the main wall opposite the bar. And bonus, they have hooks under the bar for your purse!

Catalina H.

Yelp
The food was excellent. The service was great and the drinks were really tasty. Definitely worth the visit

Greg D.

Yelp
Noticed that this restaurant just opened so I thought I'd check it out and went in for some Seafood Gumbo in a city known for gumbo. It was very well made with crawfish, shrimp, and andouille sausage. Could stand with the best of them. Then the next day for lunch I had the fried shrimp o'boy, another home run. Can't wait to check out their oyster menu. Nice clean facility with friendly staff and good food at competitive prices.

Aparna P.

Yelp
Loved this place! Sat on the upstairs balcony and had a French 75, the pimento cheese oysters and the seafood gumbo and loved it all. Service was great!

Tracie ..

Yelp
Great food and service. Very generous portions. Really good ambience. Had seafood pasta, fried shrimp PO Boy, Flames platter, and calamari. Everything was delicious. Would definitely go back.

Sarah M.

Yelp
Food was extremely salty, over priced and very greasy. The tables were also comically large and booths very deep so it felt like we were children and sitting several feet apart across from each other

Valeria G.

Yelp
Great place! Right around the corner of 100's of stores, bars, and great music. The food is fairly priced and the drinks are heavily poured. The ambience is clean and uplifting. The restrooms smell nice. The kitchen is a somewhat open concept and man are they making everything with love. Our bartender Koushik was awesome, service was kind and patient. His skills were through the roof he had everyone in the bar smiling plus was greeting everyone coming thru the door. Excited to come back for a later-dinner. Will add though was expecting the hot sauce to be hot but all of Louisiana has been pretty weak. #shotsfired #mexicanhotsauceisthebest #lovef
