Where to Eat in Suburban Chicago

"Wasfia Shalabi’s petite bakery Cake ‘N Bake, tucked inside a strip mall in Palos Hills, is a sugary wonderland of treats that range from classicly decorated cakes to trendy spiral croissants." - Naomi Waxman, Eater Staff

The Hottest Bakeries in Chicago

"Journey to the Southwest Suburbs along Harlem Avenue — which links towns like Bridgeview and Palos Hills — draws from a large Arabic population. For years, those communities have hired bakers to make halal cakes for their private events (for example, these cakes wouldn’t have gelatin). Now baker Wasfia Shalabi, a French-trained baker has opened up her own shop where she leans into trends like spiral croissants and brings a touch of Arabic flavors to her puff pastries and more." - Ashok Selvam

Love this place! Cozy little bakery with great atmosphere. I only tried the filled croissant and they were all delicious! Nutella was the winner among the house. They are huge and not super sweet which I love. One can feed 3 people with no problem. Highly recommend this place and will definitely be back to try other goodies.

It was hard leaving this place without getting one of everything. The rolled croissants are amazing. These beasts of a treat are well worth the trip. Buttery, flaky, flavorful, packed with filling. Not too sweet. Their cupcakes and single serving cheesecake cups are also superb. Small boutique, not really a place to hang out and enjoy. Friendly staff. Highly recommend.

From the moment you walk into this cake shop, you're greeted with the sweet aroma of freshly baked cakes and pastries. The display case is a feast for the eyes, filled with a variety of beautifully decorated cakes, each one more tempting than the last. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, ready to guide you through their selection and help you find the perfect cake for any occasion. Their passion for baking shines through in their attention to detail and commitment to quality. But the real star of the show is, of course, the cakes. Each one is a work of art, with layers of moist, fluffy cake sandwiched between generous helpings of creamy, flavorful frosting. The flavors are rich and satisfying, yet balanced, ensuring that each bite is a delight. What sets this place apart is their commitment to using high-quality ingredients. You can taste the difference in their cakes, from the rich, buttery flavors of the sponge to the natural sweetness of the frostings. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just in the mood for a sweet treat, this cake shop is a must-visit. It's not just a place to buy a cake - it's a place to experience the joy of cake in all its forms.

Decadent sweets and super adorable store front. Excellent service and cupcakes are super moist, delicious and tasty. Love the vanilla custard filled sprinkles. ***UPDATED*** Now my other favorites include the pistachio cheesecake and black forest cake. So fabulous, delicious and super moist & fresh. 12.8.23

A refreshing and interesting atmosphere. I purchased a carrot and chocolate cake. Plus an amazing mouse cake. They all were delicious. I definitely will be returning soon

Yelp
Outstanding! We went there on a Sunday after brunch. We ordered 3 items. Strawberry cheese cake, one of their pistachio round croissants and a tiramisu in a chocolate cup. Absolutely delicious. Each of them was put in a very high quality box. Not cheap. For all 3, around 23 dollars. But were they worth it? Oh yes! These were very well executed pastries that could be in a menu of a fine restaurant. Strongly recommend. The store itself is a small, but very quaint small place. Very clean and well presented. The only one thing a bit confusing is the name. It's not like you buy something there and bake it later as the name could suggest. That I could see, I could not see any item like that. I also learned that this a franchise so this one of many other stores. That said the place is so so good that it's worth a visit. Just great! I will be back many times.

Yelp
I have had this place bookmarked for months and it was one of the first places we checked off in the new year. The straight-forward verdict - This places lives up to the hype and everything we had was just simply excellent. Here's what we tried: 1) Chocolate and blueberry macarons - My daughters are huge fans of macarons and they just went to town with these and didn't even pause to ask if we wanted to try. 2) The coffee mousse resembled a coffee bean and it consisted of chocolate sponge cake, chocolate hazelnut, and coffee mousse. It was delicate and soft. That was my dad's favorite. 3) The chocolate hazelnut mousse cake was decadent. 4) The lotus biscoff rolled croissant was literally layers and layers of butter from the lotus biscoff filling to the croissant which isn't necessarily a bad thing and I am glad we saved room for this after dinner. 5) The strawberry cheesecake rolled croissant, in my opinion, is a bit lighter than the lotus biscoff and I found it more enjoyable. Both rolled croissants had the perfect flakey texture. I am amazed by the variety and quality of the desserts as well as their store hours. Even though we visited around 5 pm on a Saturday, there were still plenty of choices to choose from. If this location were closer to home, I would be packing on a lot of weight with my frequent visits.

Yelp
This place is amazing! If you have not checked this out in the suburbs you are missing out. They have the viral croissants that are filled with different flavors from match, chocolate and we got the pistachios filled one which was rich and creamy. The strawberry cheesecake was also good. They make everything fresh daily. They also had the smashed croissants dipped in chocolate. Also they had cakes you could order or jars of pudding and creamy cake fillings. This is great for parties and events.

Yelp
This place was good! Small shop serving a good variety of sweets. I got the viral stuffed croissant and also the flat. They were both good! The flat design was a little crunchy for my liking but the toppings were good! I think my favorite was the taco. I got 7 different things for me and my buds to try and it came to $44 total and tip. The service was quick. They are open pretty late, which is a plus!

Yelp
I had been meaning to get here for the longest time to try this bakery. Finally I went, and let me say it was worth the wait! Now if you look at the photos I attached, there is a lot to choose from! When you walk in, it may look small, but this place is big on choices! So, I decided to try the stuffed croissants. When they say stuffed, they mean it!! I ended up buying the strawberry-stuffed croissant and the Nutella-stuffed croissant (but I admit I thought it was chocolate). They both were absolutely delightful, buttery, flavorful and let me tell you...be sure to have plenty of napkins, because you will need them! It was a lot of finger-licking action going on! I very much look forward to coming back and trying one of the other delectable creations! By the way, good customer service from the young man behind the counter. The food is slightly expensive, but very much worth it. The only suggestion I have for the place is opening sooner than 11am. I say this because with the several seats inside, this could easily become a go-to morning spot. Plus, those croissants would go nicely with coffee. Outside of that, I will be back!! Yelp
This is such a cute and dainty bakery! I noticed a lot of reviews stating that there aren't any pricing and labels to distinguish what the items are and I am happy to report that both are there and available! The staff here is polite and friendly. Even the clientele is super friendly lol. It was my first time there and the gentleman waiting for his niece's birthday cake gave my friend and I suggestions on what to get and where to take pics lol. I ordered one of the custard rolls that were on the top left of the counter. There were only 2 left so I figured it was a popular item to try, it was meh. The stuffed croissants are where it's at!! I had the strawberry cheesecake one and my friend had the pistachio one. I reaaaaaaaly enjoyed this - soft, creamy, crispy outside and great to share (or not lol)! My friend said she really liked hers too. I didn't try hers but that was one of the recommendations and she's already raving about coming back ASAP. We both live about an hour from here and it was worth the drive!

Yelp
Do NOT be fooled by the nice lady behind the counter when she offers you a spoon. Just say no. I walked to my car with my bag of goodies and told myself that I was just going to take a bite of the cheesecake. That was my goal anyway. I killed that cheesecake. Licking the spoon and all. Every bite was a treat and not too sweet. I also purchased butter cookie cheesecake jars and a rolled chocolate croissant that will be tried later. Really pretty space; nice clean and inviting. Friendly service. But trust me, say NO to the spoon or something won't make it home.

Yelp
Nice ambiance and very clean. The service was excellent and everything we tried was great. The dark chocolate tea cup filled with tiramisu was excellent. The tiramisu is more custardy than an authentic one but it's definitely tasty. The Croissants are great. At first I thought, why is there only topping on one edge? Then I realized their also filled with creamy flavors as well. We saw someone pick up a custom cake as well and it was very impressive. Would definitely be back.

Yelp
My friend and I took a drive to Palos Height for these croissant and omg they did not disappoint. Definitely worth coming down to this cute bakery shop and buying yourself a huge stuffed delicious croissant.

Yelp
The croissant dessert was so good!!! We got the biscotti and Nutella one and it was delicious! Didn't try anything else. Small place, doesn't serve coffee or tea either as an option.

Nicole S.

Yelp
I ordered three cupcakes and smashed croissant and a filled croissant. The cake in the cupcakes were great, the crum was fluffy and tender. The pistachio smushed croissant was very different and delicious , like a crisp butter cookie almost. The filled hazelnut croissant is a pass for me. Wouldn't recommend that flavor, it had a pastry cream like pudding on the inside that fell short in flavor. They do know how to make a great croissant!!!! Store was beautiful and staff answered my questions since it was my first time.

Yelp
Not worth the drive from the city. Save the trip. My husband was working in the south of Illinois and I had him pick some up along the way home & it was still 30 min drive from his workplace. Aesthetically it looks pretty so it was really an IG bait. Taste wise, the croissant itself was crunchy but then they drowned it in some cream like pudding in the center and it overdid it for me. The vanilla pudding was better just cause I like vanilla pudding but the chocolate one was not it. My husband said this was nothing like Miami. Never again.
google avatar

Rifah M.

Yelp
I love croissants, especially chocolate ones. These were pretty good. The croissants were nice and buttery. They toppings were delicious. The fillings were good, but they did kind of taste the same for each one. Maybe next time I'll try the pistachio to see if it tastes different. The tiramisu was very good and creamy!! I'll definitely be back for more! One thing I'll add is I wish there was a menu so you know what each item is and how much they cost. There are some prices listed but not for everything.
google avatar

Ivy S.

Yelp
I've only had cake n bake a few times! I tried the blueberry tart, the apricot tart and the chocolate one. The blueberry is my favorite! The apricot one was okay, a little dry. The chocolate one was really good but it was so rich I only had a little bit before I had to save it for later. Overall I would definitely go back, I want to try the other things they have there!

Yelp
Heard about this bakery through Instagram and wanted to try it! We stopped in around 1pm on Saturday and they still had a wide selection. It's a small bakery and they have cute packaging (though a little excessive during these times when many are trying to reduce waste). Order and pay at the counter and enjoy your baked goods on-site or take away. We had the Nutella-custard-stuffed croissant and Oreo cheesecake. Both were pretty good, but nothing to write home about. We both liked the Oreo cheesecake more than the croissant. The cheesecake itself is more like a mousse, whipped and light. The Nutella croissant was very rich, we didn't finish it. The croissant itself was a little dense - not flakey or particularly fresh in texture, but I liked the Nutella custard filling and it all blended well. The bakery is on the pricier side, none of the baked goods were labeled with their price, and our total was $14. I would consider coming back if I lived close-by, but don't think it's worth the trip.

Yelp
Very nice place that gives off a comfortable vibe. The service is awesome. Too many wonderful options that it takes a while to make a decision on what to get. Wish I could get one of each.

Shannon G.

Yelp
Worth the 1 hour drive! These viral spiral crossaints are flaky ,crispy ,yet soft and not over sweet! The fillings were delicious! The bakery itself is small but super cute and clean. A must try!

Yelp
Delicious pastry. Awesome customer service. Gone twice and will be back. Got strawberry croissant. The fill is perfect, not sweet. Which they coffee.

Yelp
Excellent assortment of cheesecakes. Just the right portions. Assortment of mousse cakes, highly recommended. A couple folks that were behind the counter were very pleasant and very welcoming when you came into the shop .

Yelp
Super cute little bakery! Saw the Nutella croissant on Tik tok and I wanted to try it! This bakery was a 1 hour drive for me, was it worth it? Yes! The pastries were delicious! I got a coffee cake, which was my favorite! The Nutella croissant was yummy BUT the custard filling in the middle was A LOT. I got 3 macaroons to go and those were delicious. One thing I suggest is putting names in the display case for what the pastries were because I kept having to ask.

Yelp
Cake and Bake confused me a little bit. First off, I don't really understand why the bakery isn't open until like 10 o'clock in the morning?!? My job in sales has necessitated me to visit many local bakeries in the area. I stop by and grab a dozen donuts for a client and/or a coffee cake... This bakery doesn't open early? The croissants that have been hyped up weren't bad, but again, a little confusing?!? I ordered a Nutella croissant, and the Biskoff flavored croissant. The crust on the top of the croissant was Nutella and Biskoff, but the filling in both of the croissants was more like a pudding?!? Are they doing that to cut cost? Is there a reason why you wouldn't have Nutella throughout the whole croissant? Just curious... The price point is pretty extreme when it comes to these types of things, but the baked goods do appear to be on the higher end. That being written, they all appeared to be frozen?!? Again, not a big deal, but not what I'm used to. The atmosphere was pleasant and the people were friendly, but I didn't necessarily feel that the baked goods were worth the price point.

Yelp
If u go here get a slice. Or a whole cake. Of the pistachio cheesecake. It is so good. My boyfriend came over and ate half of this cake in one sitting. Everybody loved it. 10/10. Its so cute inside the place too. And the workers are very nice. We also previously tried a pistachio tiramisu in a chocolate shell cup. Again, very good. But out of everything, get this pistachio cheesecake. 100/10
google avatar

Sue K.

Yelp
Tried a variety of their desserts and every single one knocked it out of the park. Went back for those viral croissants that I've seen all over the internet and they are absolutely scrumptious. The pistachio was my favorite. They have these little tiramisu chocolate cups that was probably the best tiramisu I've had in a while and that says a lot because I'm super picky when it comes to tiramisu. They are friendly and informative when it comes to their bakes. The spot is super cute and has a few seats if you wanted to enjoy your bakes there. Absolutely love it! Just wish they were closer.
google avatar

Kristina P.

Yelp
This store is really cute. They have a lot of nice treats, but I think the prices don't match the flavor and quality, but I might try again. I was expecting the same quality of the stuffed croissants as Tous Les Jours but these are not on the same level.

Sonia J.

Yelp
The service was pleasant and kind. The bakery is beautifully designed and well lit. Now the offerings - DELICIOUS!! I'm definitely a customer!!
google avatar

Serge G.

Yelp
There's a new bakery right outside Chicago serving up delicious bakery treats including those spiral supreme croissants everyone's been wanting to try. I tried 4 of their flavors which didn't disappoint. The inside is filled with generous amounts of cream, and the outside is lightly buttery and flaky. My favorite was the hazelnut and close behind was the lotus croissant.

Zoe W.

Yelp
Delicious and worth the drive! We tried the stuffed croissant and some of the cheesecake jars. Everything was excellent! But be sure to double check the flavors because they aren't marked in the case and we received the wrong one.
google avatar

Julie G.

Yelp
Lovely little place but I can't recommend it. The pastries and cakes are colorful and fresh but the fillings are overly sweet, artificial tasting and way too much.

Jeinie D.

Yelp
Great service! Lady at the register explained all of the desserts to all of the customers in line and was so sweet. Went in later in the day around 5pm on a weekday, still had a good assortment of desserts available. Ordered to go and the desserts held up well even in the heat (drive was about 15 min) Got a couple cheesecakes in jars (strawberry and Oreo). Soo good! Super creamy velvety texture and the crust was great too. Also got the large stuffed croissants (Nutella and pistachio) did not disappoint! Flakey, buttery and crispy dough with a good amount of filling Definitely coming back to try more! The bakery is totally adorable too if you're interested in having an insta moment.

Katie L.

Yelp
Everything was amazing! The strawberry cheesecake croissant was unbelievable! I can't wait to go back!

Saida R.

Yelp
Staff was so friendly and place is very cute! I was looking forward to this drove down from the city, ( being a pregnant woman craving sweets!) The reviews weren't bad. There was a few that said it's definitely not worth it and I agree it's not worth it sad to say the pictures online make it look so tasty! But it's definitely the opposite. Don't waste your money or time going like I did.

Marissa V.

Yelp
The croissants are amazing! Staff is very friendly and is always a comfortable environment. Price are fairly decent for the quality of pastries!

Nayeli L.

Yelp
Was excited to try the filled croissants, I tried the pistachio. While the exterior of the croissant was amazing, the filling wasn't very good (too sweet and kind of chunky- the texture was a off). My husband had the vanilla filled croissant and that one was much better. We both tried the Nutella and Oreo cheesecake cups which were tasty. I think the place is cute and the workers were super nice. Glad I tried it? Yes! Would I go back? Maybe, but wouldn't get the pistachio filled croissant.

Peyman E.

Yelp
Nice variety of beautiful displays of fresh pastries. Everything we had was delicious and very friendly staff. The round croissants are the same as you get in big cities like NY and so happy we can find them in the Chicago land. Wish they served coffee though, so your visit would be complete. But since the shop is tiny with only a few chairs to sit down, the place is more for carry out. But still worth the try. Highly recommend it, and you won't get disappointed.
google avatar

Connie M.

Yelp
Tasted more like donut than croissant ... and very overpriced. The croissants from Costco are really better ! Sorry to write bad review. But it's just not worth it.

Najat A.

Yelp
Friendly and helpful staff. Reasonable prices. Delicious rich pastry and dessert made with quality ingredients. It's a really cute place and very clean. So happy I stopped in today.

Lily K.

Yelp
The shop is really clean and looks very cute! The person behind the counter was very helpful in explaining the items. We tried the Lotus cupcake and tiramisu and it was delicious! Great place to visit if you're in the suburbs.

Abraham F.

Yelp
All is good. I have been back several time after I haven't had any bad experiences with any of the baked good items, or anything else. The people are always nice and friendly, and it's always clean.

May M.

Yelp
I follow cake n bake on social media and we finally went there to try the stuffed croissants and they were excellent. I will definitely go back, but this time with more people it was just my husband and I.
