August: Our Most Exciting New Hotels

"When it opened in 1987, Calabash Grenada was, in some ways, a luxury boutique hotel before the concept had really been created. Now, a few decades later, it has subtly moved with the times, and the rest of the world has caught on to the idea of luxury hospitality on a modest, human scale." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

"Why we love it: A boutique hideaway with top-notch service and excellent food The Highlights: - A choice of breakfast on the beach or in your suite - Some of the best food on the island at Rhodes Restaurant - A prime location right near picturesque L’Anse Aux Epines beach The Review: The only Relais & Châteaux property in Grenada, Calabash is an all-suite boutique hotel owned and run by the Garbutt family, who always seem to be there when you need them. The 30 suites and villas are arranged around eight acres of lush gardens facing the white sands of L’Anse Aux Epines beach and Prickly Bay (which, despite its name, is actually quite calm). Spacious suites and massive villas that sleep up to 10 are elegantly designed in a modern colonial style, with high ceilings, king-size beds, and private patios or balconies; some even have private pools. For added luxury, breakfast is served each morning in your suite or out on the beach. When not lounging in their rooms, guests can sunbathe around the main pool, stroll the beach, or take advantage of amenities like two tennis courts, a well-stocked fitness center, and the Dive & Watersports Centre, which features Hobie sailboats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. If you’re in the mood for something less active, head to the on-site spa, a relaxing oasis with a range of treatments and complimentary yoga twice a week. When hunger strikes, there’s the lauded Rhodes Restaurant (note the “elegant” dress code) and the toes-in-the-sand Beach Club, both of which are some of the better places to eat on the island."

Yet another excellent holiday - 33 years now since we first visited and still love the hotel as much as ever.||As soon as we arrived, we received that special Calabash warm welcome and that friendliness from everyone at Calabash never ceased from start to finish. As ever lovely to recognise so many staff who have been there many years.||Our room - de luxe suite was excellent , well equipped and positioned and kept so spotless by the lovely housekeeping team.||We were also joined by our daughter at short notice ( thanks Adele for fitting her in and for such a lovely room) for our last week and she found it a very relaxing break. ||We always love the cocktails and canapes - the start to a lovely evening and thanks to the team who always kept an eye out for when we returned from the gym. The gym, incidentally, is one of the best equipped of the many hotel gyms we have experienced - spacious and very well equipped .||The Rhodes Restaurant is still a great example of what a top restaurant should be. The ambience is special, the menu is excellent , especially with the daily specials and the service is very professional and yet lightly informal at the same time. A very strong professional team led by Michael and SherLyn with George who always seems to know what you want to drink before you do!||We also enjoyed Nori which we visited twice and thoroughly enjoyed ||The Beach Club restaurant is equally good , the setting is great and again service is very good led by Desiann and all the excellent staff .We love the beach bar which is still such a lovely hub, especially after an energetic game of shuffleboard! Thanks to Leslie Ann , Mickey and the team for looking after us so well at the beach and the bar. ||The beach team were excellent , always on hand to set up your favourite spot on the beach and frequent soft drinks and also the occasional sail and more frequent kayak stand up board trips.||This year we enjoyed the aqua aerobics twice a week and also the yoga and Pilates.||A very professional team at reception , never ceasing to smile and always ready to help. Not forgetting the garden and maintenance who were always smiling and keeping the grounds and resort in excellent condition. The garden tour was very informative ||The dive team continue to provide some great dives and snorkelling together with the various watersports available. Even managed to fit in spa treatments which were excellent. ||We enjoyed the varied entertainment every evening and particularly the steel band who were excellent. It was also great to see Barracuda again with his unique music.||For us what continues to make Calabash so enjoyable and one of the best hotels we stay at ( and why they win so many awards ) is the attention to detail and professionalism and friendliness of ALL the staff . So, many thanks to Adele , Leo and Lillian for making it all happen through their wonderful staff.||We can't wait to see you all again before too long and especially seeing the new rooms- very exciting .

We just got back from an amazing trip thanks to the staff at this beautiful hotel. From the minute we pulled up we were treated like old friends.|Steven and his staff met us at the car to make us fee so welcome. After that, each staff member that we encountered was amazing! Special shout out to George, Cara, Miguel, Michael, Kareem, Alex and Abigail for being so helpful during our stay. We enjoyed every meal at Beach Club and Rhodes including the dinners that had some excellent entertainment. The spa was so beautiful and relaxing we went twice! The whole resort is beautifully maintained and the rooms are roomy and spotless! And the beds were so comfortable! We will definitely be back!

We had high expectations for the Calabash hotel, and it did not disappoint. The food was spectacular. We chose the all-inclusive option, but the food was what you would expect from a 5 star restaurant. Every meal was fabulous, with really fresh ingredients. While there are only three restaurants on the resort, there are so many good options on each menu, you will want to try everything. All of the staff are super friendly and make you feel right at home. The bartender at the main restaurant, George, brought a personal touch to our stay every time we saw him. We went off resort a few days, including a challenging hike up Mt Qua Qua. Our hiking guide, Ryan (who was also our driver the second day when we went into town) was great. He was super friendly, had a great knowledge of the trail, as well as the history of Grenada. Overall, this was one of the most enjoyable beach vacations we have taken. We will definitely return to the Calabash resort in the future.

Honestly the service is top notch. They go above and beyond and made our trip so special. We took a mother daughter sweet 16 trip and I am afraid my daughter will have a hard time not being so spoiled! Everyone was so kind to us and they celebrated her birthday every chance they could. They are not at all pushy or lurking but as soon as you need anything they are there to help. It is truly the best friendly service you could imagine. I think barefoot luxury is a great description - not too formal but yet extremely professional. They welcome you into their family and trust me you want them to be your family! The grounds are so beautiful (so many pretty flowers) and the property is not crowed. Just enough guest to mingle if you want but you could also easily keep to yourself. We meet some very nice people. Even with guest on the beach it felt so relaxing and it never felt like anyone was on top of you. One morning we had the pool all to ourselves and we were able to listen to our audiobook without headphones. Breakfast is so good and we loved everything. We preferred to eat at the beach in the morning for the view and then walk over to a beach chair. My daughter loved their Caesar salad for lunch and the fruit was very fresh and tasty. We recommend a pool noodle to float in the very calm water. We enjoyed all the property offered. Water aerobics was fun, a social highlight and we had a great sip and paint. Tea time was nice treat for us and we enjoyed the fruit tasting at the beach bar. Just enough to do to keep your day interesting between beach and food! Our favorite time was late afternoon relaxing on our deck in our robes and enjoying the views of perfectly dotted palm tress. We will return and we might even bring the rest of our family next time!

This is a very special boutique hotel, a great location on a secluded beach and excellent accommodation, we stayed in an upstairs suite which we thought preferable to the ground floor alternatives. We ate breakfast in the fantastic Beach Club, where both breakfast and lunch are excellent, hard to choose from the enticing range on offer! Dinner is usually in the Rhodes restaurant (sophisticated French with a local twist) or Nori (very good Japanese, including the famous Kiss of Fire rolls, v spicy!). We took advantage of the all-inclusive offer and didn’t regret it! Last but not least, the staff here are truly excellent across the board and make the hotel, special mentions for George in the bar and the two Abigails (one in Rhodes and the other in Nori), though everyone deserves a special mention really! Irma hosts the yoga and we had three very enjoyable sessions with her, and if you’re organising an excursion through the hotel you won’t go wrong if you ask for Ryan. And finally the team at Scuba West Indies, led by Jane and Julie, are great for snorkelling or diving trips, situated just on the Calabash beach though independently run.

Just back from a superb 10 days at this wonderful, relaxing hotel.||We stayed on a bed & breakfast basis in a junior suite. The suite was well appointed with plenty of storage and a huge bathroom/shower room. Housekeeping was excellent with some nice little touches; the turn down service & towel art for my husband’s birthday.||The hotel is in a lovely garden setting but also with the beach in view. |We did the tour with head gardener Terence & Shakeem which was very interesting. It took us up the hill & we had a wonderful view of the hotel and bay.||The original plan was to eat out a few times but we ended up doing that only once!!! The food in both restaurants was excellent; we did find the Thursday night menu in the Beach Club a bit limited for our palate.||Breakfast on the balcony was a lovely service and worked well if you were going on a trip.||Overall the staff were outstanding; friendly, helpful and made us feel very much at home. Particular praise for Abigail, George, Miguel, Sherilyn, Melissa and Elle.||On the hotel website there is a pre arrival form. I would recommend filling that out even if you haven’t booked direct with the hotel. ||We hope to return again.

I stayed here in July 23 and returned July 24. This is the most wonderful hotel with fantastic food and great service. It’s like a little bit of home rather than a hotel complex because there is a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere , great food , amazing people . Service is impeccable. Accommodation is spacious and well thought through. I’d highly recommend. I’m not surprised they have won quite a few impressive awards recently. If you are considering booking definitely go ahead because you couldn’t possibly be disappointed.
