The 13 Best Corner Store Meals In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Calabria Brothers in the Excelsior is a one-stop shop for all things Italian. The sandwiches, both hot and cold, are weighty stunners overstuffed with thinly sliced prosciutto, beef meatballs, or salami. Our favorite is the “Dan,” packed with porchetta and two types of garlic sauce. While you wait for your order, wander the shelves of calabrian chilis, every imaginable pasta shape, and even focaccia fresh from Liguria." - julia chen 1, patrick wong

Calabria Brothers' sandwiches will keep you fed for two meals - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"At Calabria Brothers, you can stock up on bronze-cut pasta and calabrian chilis while waiting for a massive deli sandwich to come your way. The deli and market in the Excelsior nails gargantuan sandwiches stuffed with thinly sliced porchetta, prosciutto, or all-beef meatballs, all layered between fluffy sourdough or soft rolls. They’re weighty stunners that could easily last two meals. photo credit: Monica Lo Food Rundown photo credit: Monica Lo Calabria Bros The house special, for good reason. It’s a simple sandwich with prosciutto, roasted peppers, and mozzarella on sourdough. Eat it cold, as is. photo credit: Monica Lo The “Dan” Tender slices of porchetta and two types of garlic sauce (hot and pesto) make this our go-to. It’s all pressed between a soft roll that soaks up every last bit of mustard, mayo, oil, and vinegar like a chia pet." - Julia Chen

Finishing up trying out all delis in SF. This one is one of my last stops, and it was worth the wait. They had a big menu with lots of sandwiches to choose from. Plenty of meat and veggie options. The Dutch crunch bread was delicious as well, nice and crunchy like it needs to be. Service was great and the employees were very friendly. Definitely worth a stop if you’re hungry and in the area.

Grabbed dinner here tonight. The sandwiches are massive! Definitely shareable. I went with the “Dan”: Porchetto, Swiss, Mustard, Mayo, OiL, Vinegar, Garlic Spread & Roasted Tomalo on Sweet Roll. I switched the bread out, as dealers choice of the sandwich maker, to sourdough. Was not disappointed. Had a bag of Lime and Pink Pepper potato chips. Great flavor and a different option if taking a side. They have things to buy and take home. Olives. Ice cream. Snacks. Packaged meats. Deli meat. I opted for the Caramel and Balsamic Gelato for a snack at home. Highly recommend. The owner was behind the counter, helpful for the “newbie”. Explained the process and what was available. Great little neighborhood deli. If you need a quick meal, you can sit in or take it to go, stop by and check them out. Would be great for a picnic.

Charming sandwich shop in San Francisco. Very tasty and innovative gourmet sandwiches, with generous portions of meats and various toppings. Super friendly staff and very efficient service. It has a little sitting area if you want to eat there. Limited street parking spots, though, so might need to walk a bit.

I cannot think of a better sandwich in this city, let alone this country. Service is so kind. Our daughter loved her little sample of the turkey!

Google
Very good sandwiches at Calabria Brothers. I had their pastrami sandwich w/Swiss cheese $13 and a roast beef sandwich w/Swiss cheese $13 both on Dutch crunch bread. The bread wasn't that crunchy. That's a sign that the bread is fresh. I asked for everything and tomatoes were not included. Otherwise, it was great.

Came in for a sandwich and walked out with a beautiful sandwich and lot of goodies. This place is a treasure. The owners have a great taste in movies too.

Google
Such a great place to get authentic sandwiches! The store is clean, and everyone is so friendly and accommodating to your request. I got the Mark twice when I came here. The hard sourdough is a must to pick from various bread. I normally eat just a half of bread and toss the rest of bread but the bread was so good that I was able to eat the whole sandwich. It’s the best sandwich place in SF or even bay area!

Google
First of all. I can't believe I have not stopped in here earlier in my life. How could I miss this GEM. This is my second time coming here after yesterday because I wanted to try their breakfast and egg salad sandwich. YUM! Yes the fat kid is strong within. Yesterday I was walking through mission on my way back from the tailors. I always past this place paying no mind thinking it's just another sandwich shop. But then I smelled this delicious aroma coming from there. I was like WTF smells good! Went in to check it out. I was impressed with the layout and products they have in there. It was so clean and organized. Then I realized it's an Italian delicatessen shop. No wonder why. I LOVE Italian food. I swear I feel like I was an Italian in my previous life. The people was so nice and great customer service. Grabbed me (2x) Mikey & Jessica to go. Killed both in the same day. Now I am back to grab breakfast and lunch. What's great is the price. I pay like $12+ for Roxie down the street. Dont get me wrong Roxie is good. But a good big sandwich for less is Awesome in my book. Will be coming here more often. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Great old school delicatessen that also socks Italian delicacies. They have a very helpful and friendly staff and everything they put out is great.

Yelp
Always in pursuit of a good Italian sandwich and this place caught me by surprise. Was just heading to a kid's birthday in McLaren Park and needed to pick something up quick and easy for my family so naturally a sandwich spot was ideal. Calabria Bros was a lovely find - an old school Italian market with a sandwich counter that cranks out the real deal. Service was quick and efficient with good suggestions. The shelves were full of all sorts of interesting sweet and salty Italian imports that were great to peruse while waiting for the sandwich order to be done. The drink fridges were also filled with an excellent variety of standards and imported drinks. Pretty great secret spot for anyone in the area or passing through. Definitely recommended.

Yelp
Been coming here for years and never disappointed. Always fire sandwiches! First time I ate inside and their customer service is great. Also so many Italian items to purchase.

Yelp
First time ever trying out this spot and they have a huge selection of meats and cheese! I got a Turkey on sourdough and I thought it was very delicious and decent sized. I would come back and try out their different meats and bread as well.

Yelp
The sammies are super fresh, massive and will keep you full all day long! They have an extensive sammie menu with something for everyone. Cute Italian market and deli has been around a while and there's good reason for it; quality, super freshness and made by sammie savants! They are the top sammie professionals around! I've had sammies here a few times and I keep going back for the Uncle Dave. Layers and layers of sammich lovin' in every bite! The meats are top quality freshness not over processed; thinly sliced and delicately placed on your choice of roll. My fav bread is the sweet roll. You also can get any sammie hot or cold. For the Uncle Dave, I prefer cold. Mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, thin sliced red onions all perfectly piled on you fav bread roll and sliced, then wrapped up in the cute red and white picnic tablecloth looking paper and traditional white paper cover wrap. Note about the mayo, not typical mayo. It's super creamy and I have a sneaking suspicion it's homemade. Oh it is awesome! They have a garlic spread they put on each sammie but I opt out, me and garlic spreads do not mix well but peeps love it I hear. I can only eat half for lunch then the other half for dinner it's so filling and delicious! One of my all time fav sammie deli markets. These sammie makers know there stuff here! Please stop by or they're also on the delivery apps. These family folks are serving these sammies with love. Definitely on my fav sammie list. Give them a try!

Yelp
Sal, Steve and Mike have the best sandwiches. They are willing to create what I want and order off the menu. My go to is turkey, Swiss with mayo pickles and jalapeños on a heated sourdough roll. Their meatball sub is amazing. I purchase our pasta, cheese and olives from their mostly imported from Italy stock. Let's not forget the San Francisco potato salad.

Yelp
Very good old school delicatessen with great service must try if you are in the area been coming here for years three owner changes since the 90s but still good

Yelp
My work sometimes gives us $20 DoorDash credits but with the fees and taxes, I can't really get lunch anywhere for $20 except Calabria Bros (doing a self pick-up). Their sandwiches are very good and the staff are always friendly. I had a $20 door dash credit to use today so I ordered the uncle dave sandwich for $13.99 and the chocolate chip cookie for $2.75. It came to $18.18 so the credit covered it. I left a $4 cash tip when I picked up my lunch. I got home and the bottom of the cookie looked like it was dipped in dark chocolate. When I removed the wrapper, I realized that the cookie was burnt beyond belief. For $2.75, those cookies should not be going out to customers. The sandwiches are great!! But skip the cookies!

Alicia H.

Yelp
Disgusting don't waste your $$ no meat no cheese nothing but bread sad 20$ sandwiche but nothing inside this should have cost 5$ never again!!!!!go to Roxies instead!!
google avatar

Yelp
Service was fast quality of ingredients was outstanding, will just be back again. If it wasn't for the fact that I had a long day I would have picked up some sauce and pasta.

Yelp
Finally got to check this place off of my list. Food regret 1000% cuz this was the best sandwich I've had in a very long time! It's on Mission so the parking is a nightmare but damnnnn the sandwiches are legit. It's all about the balance and ratios for me. I used to work in the deli dept at a grocery store when I was younger and hated seeing ppl just throwing ingredients onto a poorly cut roll without any care. Not here. The bread (sweet roll in this case) is evenly cut, just crusty enough to give a crispy texture without the "Captain Crunch" effect of prison shanking the roof of your mouth as you're chewing. Just enough doughiness to soak up the sauces/oil and vinegar but not too much bread that you can't taste the other ingredients. The Dan has thinly sliced porchetta which I ordered hot. Thinly sliced is a non negotiable when it comes to a good sandwich. There was the perfect amount of meat and cheese that were perfectly complimented by the sun dried tomato spread, mayo/mustard, lettuce, and pickles. Easy to eat like a Cubana or other pressed sandwich without having to unhinge your jaw. Super juicy and a bit messy to eat but good food is supposed to be a bit messy. I'm super impressed and the shop's vibe brought me back to Boston's North End with the hanging deli meats and the slight funk of wheels of Parmesan cheese and curing salamis/prosciutto. The two guys making the sandwiches were super helpful and polite. I'm definitely coming back to try some of the other sandwiches on the menu, you can customize a sandwich or create your own as well.

Yelp
Calabria Bros is a solid Italian deli in Excelsior. I came here this week for the first time. I hadn't eaten in this location since is was Sorrento's deli way back when. Back then a sandwich consisted of meat, condiment, and bread. Fast forward to 2022 and Calabria Bros sandwiches are more standard, meat, lettuce, onions, garlic spread, Mayo, and choice of sourdough/Dutch etc. The store itself has a large selection of wine, pastas, and other Italian food products. But we came just for the sandwiches, so we ordered four sandwiches: A vegetarian, pastrami, turkey, and the Mikey & Jessica. All had a good ratio of meat and other ingredients. The guys making the sandwiches are friendly and provided great customer service. Is Calabria Bros the best deli? No. But they are a solid choice and you won't be disappointed eating a sandwich here.

Yelp
The spot right in the middle of the block, so parking is tough for sure. Don't think of double parking either, muni runs consistently. This spot has been here for awhile, the guys behind the counter are super nice and friendly. Asked what would they suggest, they directed me to the Benito: Roast Beef, Roasted Turkey, Hot Coppa, Fresh Mozz, Mayo, Mustard, Oil, Vinegar, on Ciabatta, toasted of course! The person in line behind me suggested I add some of their prosciutto as well, said it was quality meat. So I made the addition and let me tell you...... I was not disappointed. The flavors meshed so well! The ciabatta was crispy but soft on the inside, and the hot coppa and prosciutto were it! And the sandwich was hefty! Definitely could be a sandwich for two unless you've got a big appetite! Definitely recommend!!

Yelp
Had to try this place given the high Yelp rating and found out firsthand that it deserves it. Hot Calabrese - 5/5. Calabrese Salame, Hot Coppa, Pepper Jack, Hot Garlic Spread, on Ciabatta Roll. First thing I noticed was the size. This has to be the largest sandwich I can remember, about 2x of what I needed to eat. Once I bit into it I really enjoyed the fresh and quality ingredients. Everything went together really well. I could only get through 3/4's of it before I called "Uncle". It got the best of me, but I got the best of it too...

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches I've had in a minute. They do not skimp on the meat and everything was super fresh. The people behind the counter were so nice and helpful too. They also offer a bunch of fresh and amazing olives and salads as well as dry goods- desserts, pasta, etc that we loaded up on. SO GOOD, we will be back!
google avatar

Pano K.

Yelp
I saw this spot from multiple social media users. Dude the sandwich was amazing! I went with 2 friends and we got 3 sandwiches and 2 of the "pizza pockets" to share. We got the Jake, uncle Dave and Benito. All the sandwiches were so fresh and they cut the meats fresh right in front of you. The pizza pockets were very flavorful too! Staff was friendly and efficient. A few tables inside if you want to eat there (which we did). Only downside is the location being in SF with lack of parking. Definitely will be back though!

Yelp
Ordered from Calabria Bros based on the strong Yelp reviews. The sandwiches were fine, except they didn't follow instructions. I placed an order via DD and wrote in the notes to omit onions, etc. and when my sandwiches arrived, there were onions in it. I ordered the Muffaletta as not a lot of delis offer it and I hadn't had one since visiting New Orleans. The sandwich is made up of Genoa Salami, Mortadella, Provolone, Oil & Vinegar, & Muffaletta spread. While the sandwich was tasty, it was also a bit too salty for me. I'd order from Calabria Bros again as there are other sandwiches on the menu I'd like to try.

Yelp
Italian American delis are some of my favorite places, and a very classic San Francisco-type of local business. I am still mourning the 2019 loss of the Lucca Ravioli Co. on Valencia Street. In 2021, I have been attempting to regularly eat at different delis trying to find my favorite sandwich in SF during COVID-19. The city is full of delis and I still have more SF sandwiches to try - but thus far, Calabria Bros has been my standout choice as one of the best. They use real and local sourdough, they have legit sliced deli turkey, good cheeses, so many creative topping options including two types of garlic sauce, and a diversity of pickles. These sandwiches are easily two meals in size if you get it on a roll. Our small, locally owned businesses need support now, more than ever.

Yelp
An Italian deli in the Excelsior -- ok, Calabria Bros, I see you, Boo! Twice, we ordered the same sandwiches because we liked them so much: -- The Mark is like a charcuterie board between bread: prosciutto, imported mortadella, hot coppa, pepper salame, & fresh mozzarella. A favorite in my household. -- The Uncle Dave: roasted turkey, toscano salame, havarti, & mild garlic spread. The salame adds a richness & saltiness to a traditionally good turkey sammich. -- Chicken Parmesan: chicken cutlet, provolone, & tomato sauce. My go-to when I'm craving Italian flavors but not wanting to go all-out at a sit-down restaurant. Tasty enough, but could be improved upon as there is never enough tomato sauce & my bf commented that the cutlet was not well seasoned. -- (The Dan, which is porchetta & swiss, didn't make the cut for our second order, but I'm not counting it out; I'm sure we'll get this again in the future.) Sourdough taste best but is extra hard & crunchy. Sweet roll is soft & chewy but the flavor isn't my pick for a sandwich. Dutch crunch sits in the middle as far as flavor & texture goes. Calabria Bros makes lunch time hella exciting.

Yelp
Flew in from Vegas and landed in the mission district. Had the uncle Dave and let me tell you sandwich was absolutely delicious and hits the spot. Service was very friendly they showed me where to go and where not to go. Would recommend this shop to anybody coming to the mission district.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches, fast and friendly prep, in a small but very inviting store with a broad selection of Italian snacks and delicacies. Great people working here, too--very welcoming!
google avatar

Julie L.

Yelp
My first time ordering from here but I can't give a solid review because one of my sandwiches wasn't made with all of the ingredients listed on the menu. I ordered the Wachacallit and it had everything but the hot garlic sauce which is what i was looking forward to and it probably would've made it 100x's better. Sadly, i ended up with a dry sandwich and had to add mayo. Other than that the cannolis were good and everyone else seemed to like their sandwich.
google avatar

Veronika F.

Yelp
Went there today. Saw that they had hog head cheese. The butcher cut me a slice. It was delicious, so I got a pound. Ordered a turkey sandwich, with Harvard's cheese, everything on it. The store has meats hanging from the ceiling, and all thing you find in an Italian deli, like olives, anchovies, etc. I was greeted warmly when I first came in. No pressure. Perused the store and it's various imported offerings. Paid at the cashier who looked like one of the "brothers," on the sticker. A great little shop in the Mission. I will go here again!

Yelp
Who knew this hidden gem was right down the street from my house all along! I grew up in an Italian deli/market & this place definitely gives me nostalgic vibes. I ordered a veggie sub on Dutch crunch & my partner ordered roast turkey on Dutch crunch. Both sandwiches were decently sized, fresh, & tasty. We ordered over the phone & picked them up in person & the service was great on both ends. The ambiance inside is very welcoming, we will for sure be back soon.

Yelp
Old school Italian deii. Felt like I was going home. 5 stars. Good people. Great service.

Yelp
I love me some sandwiches and after I saw a buddy of mine post about this post about this spot, I knew I had to go try it. First time here, I decided to ask the sandwich makers what they recommended, where they said the 'Dan' is good if you love porchetta, which I definitely do. As I watched them build the sandwiches, and watched it go into the toaster, my first thought was, they load up on the meats! I got it on a toasted sourdough roll, which came with both their pesto and hot garlic spread, which are both sauces I highly recommend. The sandwich is definitely on the saltier side, but that didn't make enjoy it any less. For the sandwich it came out to just under $10, which is an unreal deal for a sandwich of this quality and flavor. It was big enough for two meals, even with my big appetite. If you have had bay cities in Santa Monica, this sandwich reminded me a lot of that. This is a Italian deli that's been in the neighborhood for decades, and the new owners took over about 12 years ago, and they seem to still be going strong. I came in at 10am with no line, they said closer to lunch time though, it gets really busy. They offer online ordering direct on their website, so if you are in a time crunch, best to plan and order ahead online or call for an estimated wait time. Overall, if you are looking for a delicious and affordable Italian deli sandwich, make your way to Calabria Bros! Can't wait to come back and try some of their other offerings!

Yelp
Good sandwich and good service. Sandwich was good with fresh bread and quality meat, asked for everything and wish it came with tomatoes. Would be back to try other sandwiches soon.

Yelp
First tim e checking out Calabria Bros based on the strong yelp ratings and it did not disappoint. Parking is never great on Mission so expect to park on a side street and walk a couple of minutes. Truly authentic Italian American deli. Being a first timer I asked for recommendations and everyone there was super helpful to me in making the right food choice. I got Hot Calabrese ($11.99) which had Calabrese Salame, Hot Coppa, Pepper Jack, Hot Garlic Spread, on Ciabatta Roll which I substituted for a Dutch Crunch roll. Got mine warmed up which is always a good move. Sandwich was awesome with the flavors of the meat coming alive with each bite. Hot Garlic spread had a solid kick to it so I always recommend for anyone who likes spice. We also got some pasta salad to share between my gf and I which we also enjoyed. I do which they had the Torres potato chips to join this incredible sandwich. Great eats and I will be back many times!!!

Yelp
Delicious muffaletta - I asked for just mortadella- yum! Super fresh and thinly sliced - perfect! Wonderful staff too - many thanks Calabria Bros!

Yelp
This place makes the best of the best sandwiches. The Dan/porchetta is a favorite. Freshly sliced deli meat sandwiches made for you.

Yelp
Bravo...Bravo...Bravo...this Italian girl is so happy to have been told about this great deli/Italian treasure market. The feel, essence, and tastes took me back to the olden days of my childhood visiting Italian delicatessens in North Beach with my Nonna. I am thrilled. I purchased "The Dan" sandwich which was filled with Porchetta...and layers of delicious goodness. My husband was so pleased to see gelato in a stand up freezer! We will be back!
google avatar

Marcus O.

Yelp
I was disappointed with my quantity of meat in the sandwich. Hardly any compared to the pictures of other peoples sandwiches. Their sandwiches aren't cheap either. I feel duped and unsatisfied. The spread was good though.
google avatar

Steve G.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches. I had the uncle Dave. Will be back! The prices are a bit on the high side though ($15-$18)

Yelp
Wow! What can I say. The worst thing is that this has been across the street I grew up right there all along. I'm so mad at myself for not finding this gem earlier. The people, the shop, the food, the authenticity is all there. The people here are such a gem and so nice. I've been here twice now! Get there early because they run out of bread fast. I'm the grilled chicken sandwich type of guy there but apparently there also known for their breakfast sandwiches and tri-tip. I can't stress enough how good their sandwiches are and how huge they are. I mean this was a meal for two people. I had a grilled chicken breast (he actually grilled it on the spot), on a ciabatta roll, with everything on it and fresh mozzarella cheese. I added bacon, their garlic and pesto spread, and they have a red chili sauce that's a bit spicy to top it off. Amazing and extremely well priced. So happy about this gem in the excelsior area. Can't wait to eat here again.

Yelp
First.. let me tell you that we are very lucky to have this deli in Mission District and so grateful,it's been around Such a long time. But I can see why . This deli is A hidden gem! Nestled on mission street, can't miss the red white green lettering on outside. A real historic landmark building .. Located in the Mission excelsior neighborhood. And certainly worth driving to the outer mission. (Across front Safeway on mission near Russia. Beautiful impeccable, Italian deli with lots of imported products from Italy . The staff is excellent . The two guys one is mark and his associate both making the sandwiches are so sweet and accommodating. These have got to be the best Sandwiches around. I ordered the pastrami with Swiss had them warm it up added everything on it with a little smear of pesto sauce and extra pickles. Omg ! These sandwiches are mouthwatering. the fresh sourdough bread is very good crunchy and in between hard and soft , which is my favorite but there are many other fresh bread choices. Everything is freshly made daily. So Clean, organized, and well stocked w great sauces and pastas from Italy . Not to mention an amazing array of good wines! The deli has had a great reputation for many many years in the mission district . Can't wait to go back !

Yelp
great neighborhood deli! I was recommended the Watchacallit on Dutch Crunch with mortadella i/o bologna and provolone i/o cheddar. I got it cold. It was delicious. Definitely enough to share with someone else.

Yelp
Best sandwich i had in the city so far! Much better selection of meats and sandwiches I ever seen in a deli. Definitely coming back for more!

Lisa B.

Yelp
I went into Calabria Bros today, got my usual. They made me a huge generous sandwich just as I like it. It's wonderful to go into a place where they know you. They are always friendly and treat customers well. We bought food for dinner later in the week too! Good value, high quality, friendly people.
google avatar

Teresa P.

Yelp
I love this place it's a must stop before I head back home, me and my kids have to stop to get our sandwiches and bread. Customer service is always a highlight as they know we are about to start our 8hr journey home so to start it on a good note sets the tone! I wish I could bottle them up and bring them south. This place holds so many memories of me always being tasked to run down the hill to get my grandfather his salami and olives.
google avatar

Andy B.

Yelp
Ok, I've only been here once, but I'm hooked. I hope work keeps me in the area so I can try more of the menu. The blacken pastrami is worth every penny.

Yelp
Hi Yelpers remember when I said that I will return to this Calabria Bros just to buy myself a Italian Style Sandwich!!! And finally I did on a Happy Monday Foggy Day... I came here before the lunch time hour... When I got here It was good that it wasn't crowded yet at the lunch time when deciding to order my sandwich!!! While looking the sandwich menu on the wall, I already knew what I wanted to order and this is what I ordered which was the Mortadella & Black Forrest Ham on a Sourdough Bread!!! This was my very 1st ever that I have ordered myself a Sourdough Sandwich at this Calabria Bros of the Mission Street Area of San Francisco, Ca!!! I really enjoyed eating this Mortadella & Black Forrest Ham which had a lot of meat and made me so full!!! I have been to a lot of Deli's all over San Francisco, Ca!!! And If you were to ask me what would be the best place to go and eat a Italian Style Sandwich... My choice would be the Calabria Bros of the Mission Street area of San Francisco, Ca!!!

Yelp
Stumbled on this place driving through SF to my next job...And...Just had one of the best Italian deli sandwiches I've ever had. This place is legit hopefully I stumble on this place again in the near future.

Yelp
Calabria Bros Deli is the essence of an Italian deli. Made-to-order sandwiches featuring fresh sliced meats and cheeses. The Sandwich Mongers go above and beyond and always deliver. Undoubtedly, one of the best sandwich spots in SF

Yelp
The sandwiches were huge with a perfect ratio of meat to bread. The owner was a super cool local guy. Fully enjoyed the meal, will be coming back often!

Herbert F.

Yelp
"The Dan" was a very tasty sandwich. They recommended hot salami and the ratio of meat to bread was perfect with generous portions. However I did make the mistake of swapping the sweet roll for sourdough and ultimately chipped my tooth while trying to rip off a piece of the sandwich. My weak enamel is in no way a reflection of the food quality. 5 stars
