Calanoa Eco Lodge offers a serene escape in the Colombian Amazon with rustic-chic chalets, exceptional dining, and immersive jungle activities.
"I’m staying at Calanoa Lodge, a private reserve and the only accommodation that even approaches luxury in the area. It’s owned by the Sampers: Marlene, a sociologist who works with indigenous communities, and her partner Diego, an artist who has made the lodging an experiment in tropical sustainable architecture. To get to Calanoa is an expedition in its own right: For starters, it takes two hours to fly from Bogotá to Leticia, the hot, humid frontier town of the Amazon named after a beautiful woman a Peruvian engineer once fell in love with. As the plane approaches the one-runway airport, glimpses of treetops are visible through the low, dense cloud cover. We descend into the mist, and suddenly the rainforest is upon us. I see endless miles of thick, lush green interrupted by a murky, yellow-brown stripe snaking across the forest, splicing the land in two: the Amazon River."
