My friend and I stopped for a quick lunch at this delicious spot. They have a salsa bar with a variety of chunky and creamy salsas and multiple levels of heat. I ordered the Enchiladas and she ordered two tacos. Both were so delicious. I definitely recommend trying this location

Had the street tacos. They were very good. The service is fast and friendly and the food is flavorful.

This place checks off everything I look for in a restaurant: Good food Smiling faces Good prices For a family of 6 we all ate for only $50. And everyone got to eat. The food taste freshly made with love! The lady’s was all kind! There is plenty of seating inside and out. I definitely recommend eating here! The only complaint I had is that in the back it was a little warm but she did give me a heads up. The set is family friendly and local owned, in my experience those places always have the best food. Ok, let me start with TikTok telling us about Birria Ramen, so we HAD to try it when next in Tulsa! We drove in for our daughter's pom competition and naturally had to eat something. This spot is right off of historic Rt 66, so as a car nut, the environment is already perfect! Then we were greeted immediately and offered a seat and a menu. The Mrs ordered Birria ramen, the daughter ordered red tacos (birria), my little cousin/ the daughter's beautician had enchiladas on flour tortillas, and I had hands down the best Torta I've ever eaten! To make it even better, you can choose spicy level from 1-4. I went level 3, which was right on for my spicy tolerance (somewhere around habenero heat). As if that's not enough you may pick your salsa from the salsa bar to enjoy with your chips(one paper boat of chips per entre ordered) I had the pineapple mango habenero salsa which was amazing, with a perfect balance of sweet heat! I am looking forward to our next trip to T-town so that I can explore the menu more!!!

Went to Calaveras Mexican Grill for lunch today at 1 PM, our order was taken by Brenda at the counter. We got our salsas, onions and escabeche (delicious!) at the salsa bar — nice selections. We picked a booth and waited for food to be delivered. I ordered 3 red tacos and they were excellent (especially dipped in consommé) and lemonade. My bride had two ground beef tacos and horchata. We loved that they fried their own corn tortillas!! And for those that care, the men’s restroom was very clean and no trash lying around.

The first time there, will be back for more. Good food, excellent service!! Very clean place. I really like that they have salsa bar, awesome flavors by the way.

Google
Update: such an awesome place, here's some more pictures Great little locally owned restaurant; I've been here a handful of times now and it never disappoints. The salsa bar alone is worth the trip. Great sauces on the meals and very flavorful proteins. Try the vampire tacos! Another update: quality is slipping, this trip wasn't very good :(

Google
GO HERE. NOW. This place is awesome. I would go back to Tulsa just to go here. The tacos were pretty good, but the guacamole was some of the best I’ve ever had. Lots good drink options too, good light, and wonderful vibes.

Yelp
So glad they ate back. Amazing food!! Way to go chef!! My husband had the steak wet burrito and almost picked the plate clean. I had the Birria torta. So good the meat was perfect! We will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
The tacos were good but they weren't amazing. I think the main area where they lose points is the price. Three tacos and a tiny cup of mediocre refried beans for $15 is way too much. The quality of tacos is significantly less than what you would get at a taco truck for half the price. Side note: Their AC was off or broken and felt like a sauna haha

Yelp
We dine at this Restaurant this evening food had no taste and customer service was non existent. Wevunderstand Calavera's has new owners. This was one visit first and last. Former customers please be aware this location isn't like it use to be. Stay away. I give this new owner 3 months with this quality of service and tasteless food.

Yelp
Okay let's just say Birria tacos! If you want the nest come here! OMG! I was full but wanted more! I've been here before and thw rest of the menu is great but these birria tacos blew my mind. Other places only wished they were this good! The place is clean and they have a little patio to sit and chill out on. The girls are always so nice and very friendly. They have a salsa bar and wow the selection of mild to hot salsas. I love it!

Yelp
My goodness I keep taking pics every time we come here of the amazing food we keep receiving but consistently is what you are reading and seeing. Don't be fooled that breakfast burrito it bordered on too much food but without rice and beans it was perfect. My husband is obsessed with the birria torta and has been getting that the past couple times. I'm obsessed with the consume they serve that sandwich with!! I cannot say this enough, please start selling your salsas and consume because yummmmm. The carne nachos were plentiful crunchy and oodles of toppings. As advertised continuing to eat our way through the menu will continue. As always the staff is lovely and attentive keep churning out the excellent food!!! See you soon.

Yelp
Met some friends at calaveras for some delicious food and beverages. I enjoyed the chimichangas with rice and beans, while my friends had tacos, burritos , carnitas, and other assorted delicious dishes. We all enjoyed the chips and salsa bar. Some of us had beer while others had frozen margaritas. The vibes were good and the service on point. I will say, it was (we sat near the window in July and they have no shade). I certainly hope you don't blame the Oklahoma summer heat on them, but I felt it necessary to warn you of the only downside to visiting this gem.

Yelp
Calaveras was shutdown for some time while the food truck was making its ways around Tulsa. I was doing a photo shoot & they were open so I decided to treat myself. Ironically, it was on a Taco Tuesday (which they have specials on tacos). I got their combo of two tacos, rice & beans. They have a salsa bar and I ran with the verde & roja and grabbed so of their pickled jalapeños. Their retired beans are really really good, I would eat a side of their beans alone & be satisfied. I got chicken for my tacos are they were SUPER good (I had to hit 'em with extra lime). Along with the beans & tacos, the rice went well with both. They had flan sitting in the fridge that I couldn't keep my eyes off of & knew I wouldn't have the room to want some right then & there. The employee was super nice & hooked me up with a handful of cups to do my thing with the salsa bar. I'm glad this spot opened back up. *I don't remember if I saw breakfast on the menu when I was there. It's possible that they serve it because their food truck did.*

Yelp
So thankful this spot opened back up in the Kendall-Whittier area! Located across the street from where the Tulsa Farmer's Market is held, this restaurant offers delicious and filling food as well as a complimentary salsa bar! The fajitas were great and had a pretty affordable price tag. Grant loved their wet torta and we both enjoyed the queso. Again, really affordable for a big bowl!

Yelp
I'm officially done with this place....I tried but anytime I've been there it just hasn't been all that good. This time I only ordered guac and queso with chips....it's something about their guac that tastes store bought like the fake kind that they just add chunks of tomato and onion to...plus it doesn't change colors like fresh guacamole does. The cashier was really sweet though. I've never had bad service there just food that I didn't like and I love Mexican food. I'm so disappointed because I hear people say good things about this place. But for me it's a no

Yelp
This is the first time we've visited since they reopened. Even though you order at the counter, service was stellar and uber friendly. We ordered the red birria tacos, one carne asada street taco and an al pastor street taco. The birria tacos were enough to split (three---bigger than a street taco but not huge). The carne asada taco was outstanding, too. The al pastor taco was good. I would probably do the same order next time. The birria tacos came with a side of rice--kind of small but plenty (and good). We got two boats of chips and they were refilled quickly. My only minor, tiny complaint is that the salsa cups are too small. (Because, my friend, there are a lot of salsas to choose from.) Make this corner of town your starting point for date night. Have an early cup of coffee at She Brews, dinner at Calaveras, popcorn and a movie at Circle Cinema and round it out with a brew from Heirloom. (And, don't forget to pick up churros at Pancho Anaya.)
google avatar

Yelp
It wasn't quite perfect, but close. Today, I ordered, through doordash, the red birria tacos for lunch, with horchata to drink and chocolate flan as a dessert. The tacos came with a dipping sauce and a cup of rice on the side. They were maybe the best tacos I've had in a long time. So much delicious flavor, with a perfect slight spice in the dipping sauce, and a fantastic texture. The horchata had a wonderful milky cinnamon flavor that was perfect to my taste, and the flan was nearly perfect. I will say that I've only had flan one other time and I think I prefer it without the chocolate. I think the chocolate makes it taste a little more like a chocolate cake than a flan, but it was still delicious and creamy. I am excited to try more in the future. 4.5, but I put 5 because overall, the experience was closer to 5 than a 4.

Yelp
Our family was together for the holidays and visited Scheels to see what all the excitement is about. When we were ready for a late lunch I was driving and gave no one a choice and headed to Admiral, bypassing hundreds of places to eat. We were not disappointed. The service and smiles from the staff made the delicious food top notch!

Yelp
We were doing photography event in the area and this place is delicious and had great service. The salsa bar is awesome and the food tasted great. The Barria burrito was amazing and the meat was perfectly cooked. It was a little salty but I will have to come back again to see if it was just that batch. Worth a try when you are in Tulsa. The restaurant has a perfect authentic feel and is very colorful.

Yelp
Overall really good. I really enjoyed the birria. There others I like better but I'd definitely eat these again. The others enjoyed their food as well. My partner enjoyed her shrimp cocktail. For days she's said she wants to go get some more. I don't like cocktail sauce but this was good. More of a pico. Not that ketchup based gross stuff you get at other places. Margaritas only come in frozen and they're super sweet.

Yelp
Calaveras is by far the most authentic Mexican food in the greater Tulsa area. The food quality is top shelf with a variety of options on the menu. The ambiance is just right for that hole in the wall feel. The service is limited to the counter but it seems to work well.

Bryan A.

Yelp
If you are a West Coast transplant, don't miss out on this place! They are more Baja then Tex Mex (although they do have queso and wet burrito options), as they are Los Angeles transplants. Try the Huevos Rancheros, you'll be pleased! The space is charming and the service was friendly and accommodating.

Larks T.

Yelp
Okay, went back for lunch, after shopping at Studio Records. Really good cheese enchiladas and refried beans. Had the horchata again, and it was great. Service (by Brenda) was outstanding - answered questions about the ingredients and vegetarian options.

Yelp
Self service, go up to the counter and order and then you take a seat. Complementary chips and salsa bar with salsa ranging from mild to hot burn your ass. I went on taco Tuesday for the red tacos a.k.a. birria tacos. Plate with three tacos, consommé and rice. Tacos are made with homemade corn tortillas doubled up two tortillas per Taco, my tortillas were slightly overcooked crispy but a little burnt, the consommé was full of flavor. The rice was a little gritty could've been softer. Dining area was OK. A lot of the tables were dirty even though they were empty needed to be wiped down. This is full self service. There's no wait staff to refill your drink or bring you anything. You will get up and serve yourself, they have a lot of new menu items and follow the Facebook page for daily specials. Parking is across the street but there was plenty of spaces service was friendly, short and sweet. I will probably eat here again most likely for lunch and try something else. . Join the rewards program by signing up with your number in the store.

Yelp
Very Impressed with my Birra Enchiladas I ordered as well as the choco flan! Free chips and salsa. I ordered from DoorDash and they were super fast! I'll eat here again next time I'm in Tulsa

Yelp
This is such a cute place. I'm happy for the landlords and the owners that they got this place back running. I was sad to see it closed. I hope it gets the support it deserves. I wish it had some live music for dancing cause I love the area..

Chris C.

Yelp
The food here is spectacular. There is no better place in Tulsa for birria. Definitely will be back.

Yelp
I'm an ecstatic about Calaveras being open again!!! During Covid I would often drive by just to see if they were open yet, anticipating that authentic Mexican food that tastes amazing! My day brightened as if a rainbow cleared the path when I called today and was told they're open . As soon as I walked in I was back in food heaven and couldn't decide on what tasty goodness I wanted today. I chose Gorditas and of course I needed a side of yummy guacamole and chips as an addition to my order. This California girl loves the atmosphere here... the beautiful colors and decor are so nice. I'm in love with the Salsa bar too!! The staff is always so friendly and helpful. Thank you so much for reopening Calaveras.. I've missed you dearly!!
google avatar

Yelp
We had the shrimp tacos and red Burria tacos! Very good and will return! Great service and cool little place!

Rob B.

Yelp
I love their posada- pork with hominy in a green sauce. The nachos are good as well as their red velvet tacos. They have good chips with a wide range of salsas and sauces. Didn't care for their rice pudding- the rice was not fully cooked!' The waitstaff was good and the place was very clean. Great place to go to when you attend a movie at Circle cimena
google avatar

Yelp
I'm very conflicted with my reviews for this place. I've only had delicious food. I've eaten many pollo and asada street tacos from here since they reopened recently. Very tasty. The restaurant is a cool space and very colorful. The smells are yummy. The salsa bar is well-stocked with plenty of options. The staff...not so friendly. Maybe it's a language barrier, but the folks working the few times I've come in just seemed annoyed. I know they were hit HARD during Covid and only reopened right before 2022 cended, so may be they are just tired from trying to bounce back. Also, and I assume it is more due to the overhead of the location, it's pricy compared to other divey-er taco and Mexican spots around town.

Yelp
I was craving some sea food soup and I saw this was close to were I was and decided to go I checked out big mistake should've thought when I walked in and it was completely empty so I ordered my soup and a soda I got a little tray of chips and went to the salsa bar I grabbed some of the roasted salsa and when I tried it it was spoiled I said oh well so I waited for my dinner when I got the soup it was so thick like it has been reheated so many times and also had a sour taste anyways I only eat the 3 shrimp and piece of fish that came with it I left everything else the only thing I ate was a toasted telera they gave me and they charge me almost $28 for the spoil soup and soda so I end it up going spending $7 on some good ass tacos up the street, The lady at register asked me if it was my first time the but I forgot to tell her that it was the last time too.

Krystal M.

Yelp
Ordered food through DoorDash. Food was fresh and hot. The food had great flavor. The service be more thorough. I did not receive my queso bowl and the chips were small and oily.

Whitney A.

Yelp
We went to Calaveras for the first time on Saturday night. It was AMAZING and we are making plans to go back very soon. We were a group of 12 and everyone's good was equally delicious. Make sure and get the fresh guacamole and the margarita with tajin. You will thank me later.

Kathy P.

Yelp
Fresh flavors in a homey atmosphere! The salsa bar is a nice touch. Be prepared to order and pay at the counter. Staff is cheerful and attentive.

Yelp
2017 was the last time I dined at Calaveras Mexican Grill. During the peak of the pandemic, Calaveras closed. Today, I found the restaurant was operating as I remembered. Calaveras is a great, clean, comfortable restaurant. Paintings of brightly decorated skulls from the centuries old, Mexican tradition, brighten the interior. Minimal service. Order at the counter, food delivered to your table. Chips a little stale, because they don't keep them heated. The serve yourself salsa/condiment bar, still located along the west wall of the restaurant. It is a satisfying assortment of capsaicin levels salsa blends, colors and flavors. Essential sliced peppers, radishes and limes are provided to satisfy to most anyone's Mexican food condiment desires. It required several trips, but I tried them all. I had an excellent meal. My choice was the Vampiro Tacos. I do recommend these. Check the menu for an inventory of the components and the meat options available. I had carnitas on mine. Perfectly cooked shredded seasoned pork. Moist, tender, pork with satisfying crispy strands on the outside from being fried. The corn tortillas had blackened charred patches of aroma, that blended perfectly with the pork, fresh pico de gallo and guacamole! They exceeded my expectations! Welcome Back Calaveras! Spike's inessential information....... For years I have been wandering around Eastern Oklahoma trying every new, and established hole in the wall Mexican restaurant I could ferret out. I have experienced the full spectrum of the cuisine that falls within the broad definition Mexican food. Some unpalatable, some delectable and some as mediocre as a frozen Swanson's Enchilada dinner. I have read the testimonial analyses in hundreds of reviews that declaim a restaurant to be "authentic" Mexican, Tex-Mex or the despicable Cali-Mex. Many of the weak assessments based solely on the color of the cheese used. Something I have learned in meeting and talking with the proprietors of the small mom and pop restaurants, is that "authentic" Mexican food is very diverse. The variations can be representative of the many regions of Mexico and heavily influenced by family recipes passed down through the generations. I have been in restaurants that are so filthy stray cats refuse to eat the scraps tossed out the back door by the kitchen staff. I am certain that staying current on my hepatitis vaccinations has prevented lengthy hospital stays. I have found very few restaurants to be pristine. The exceptions exist. Those that are, make my favorite lists and get appropriate accolades. In my opinion, street tacos are the baloney sandwiches of Mexican food. Very little culinary skills are required to prepare and assemble, using two or three simple ingredients that anyone can duplicate. But it is a current fad. And, never eat anything from a food truck. The health department probably doesn't know it exists and likely has never visited. For more reviews laced with superfluous, time-wasting inessential information, sarcastic diatribe and subjective opinion, look for Spike S. on Yelp and Spike Speedwell on Google Reviews!

Melissa B.

Yelp
JUST GO! you will not be disappointed! I do really enjoy the options at the salsa bar.
google avatar

Badria M.

Yelp
I was surprised by how flavorful the chicken street tacos were, given that I didn't like my food the last two times I visited! I think this one of those places where the food is good depending on the popularity of the dish you order. On that note, I don't recommend the ceviche! I do appreciate the music and festive Day of the Dead theme of the restaurant. Great atmosphere overall!
google avatar

Maggie D.

Yelp
This is a great place to get great Mexican food! To start, the atmosphere is so cool. I love how colorful it is, and the paper banners hanging are just so fun. The whole place kind of makes me feel like I'm not in Tulsa anymore, which is always fun. It's kind of run down, especially from the outside, but I actually kind of like that. It somehow just works with the general vibe, and gives it character. It feels authentic and genuine. The workers were nice, though you don't interact with them much since you order up front, refill your own drinks, etc. It's not "fast food", but it has a similar feel in terms of how things work. The food is obviously better though! I came here once before, and I don't remember the menu having as many options as it does. There's pretty much anything I'd want on the menu from a Mexican place. I was surprised that the verde burrito was actually cheaper than just the chile verde, so I ordered that one since it's basically the same thing just wrapped in a tortilla. I thought the pork was a bit on the dry side but it was still good. I also wish the verde sauce was a little more flavorful, but I know that it's meant to be a mild sauce on purpose. You get complimentary chips, and they have a salsa bar with a few different options. I added some extra verde sauce to my burrito and I liked it even better. The portion size was good. I was hungry at the time and finished it, but could have also easily taken some home as leftovers. Overall I thought it was good, and I want to try more from the menu.

Yelp
Que Bueno! Open for dine-in on 9/29/22 after being closed for 2 years because of COVID. They were able to keep their food truck busy but I, for one, am really glad to see them back. The menu is smaller but the layout inside the restaurant is the same. I was there around 2pm on 9/30/22 and greeted immediately. Only 3 other customers who entered right after me. I already knew wheat I wanted (Posole Verde). It was exactly as I remembered it. The salsa and condiment bar is the same. Plenty of chips come with the meal and the salsa can be customized any way you want. The only downside to my Posole experience is that there wasn't much else (cabbage, onion, cilantro) to add to the Posole. The first time I ever had this dish was at Calaveras several years ago and the owner himself suggested I needed to add this other stuff. Of course he was right. The salsa bar only has little cups to use to get your condiments. There must be a better way. I can't wait to get back on a weekend and get me some Huevos Rancheros or Chilaquiles. Bien venidos, Calaveras. Good to have you back!
google avatar

Joyce R.

Yelp
Again, I WANT to like this place. Especially because of the location. I'll say I guess if you just order the pork street tacos, you'll be okay. I was starving. Ordered the chili rellenos. The rice was cold. Juxtaposed to the warm, toasty tortillas. There really isn't that much food on those platters. It's spread thinly. The rellenos was flat. It steamed -- from the tomato topping, as the cheese inside wasn't melty. All this stuff prepared in advance. . . (I'd rather a rellenos from Ricardo's. I just checked on 15 best rellenos in Tulsa and Calaveras wasn't listed). They now serve margaritas. My dining partner swore they had no liquor in them. The tomatillo & habenero sauces are HOT. Kudos again on the "chip" salsa. It's good. I'll be back for its convenience. & street tacos, I guess.

Yelp
Located in the heart of Whittier Square, I have driven by this place but never stopped....I had a hankering for Mexican and Mamma never says no to street tacos so we tried it out. The decor looks friendly, worn booths and tables and chairs... Warm and inviting like an old friend. You order at the counter, and they bring food to you. Staff was friendly and helpful. The good...salsa bar is fun, giving a variety of salsas to try, plus this is where the jalapeños, limes, onion, radish, and pickled cabbage (new to me at a Mexican grill, but I'll try anything twice) are stashed so be sure to hit this for the extras you might want. The bad....when we were here many of the bins were near empty and it was obvious there had been some cross contamination as there were swirls of cream in the pineapple mango salsa. Chips provided are light and fresh; white quest ($4) is good. I ordered the Molcajete de Mariscos, which came to the table steaming....all seafood, and was delicious, except the menu specifically stated it was served with cactus...and there was no paddle, as promised, in my bowl. Traditionally Molcajete is served in a lava rock bowl, menu says rock bowl, but this was served in a small iron pot. It served the same purpose, but it's kinda like expecting a Cadillac and getting a Yugo. They both can get you from A to B, but not with the same style or flair, and NOT WHAT WAS PROMISED. This is A LOT of food, which was a saving grace for this dish, and I took half home for a second meal. I did not take home any cactus BECAUSE I DIDNT GET ANY!!! Also didn't get lettuce, sour cream or guacamole. Apparently to get guac, it's $1.50 more and you have to ask for it. If I'm paying $16 for an entree, and you are already stiffing me on cactus, sour cream and lettuce....and charging more for guac....seriously? Momma had street tacos, and as the authoritative street taco expert, and I have her permission to say so, carne asada and patron were uneventful, lacking seasoning and therefore bland. Carne Asada had no char...didn't appear grilled. Carnitas was much better, with good flavor. REMEMBER the limes and salsa bar to spice these up as needed, but there are lots of places that serve street tacos... Drinks are serve yourself fountain and they also have margaritas and beer. Lots of rave reviews...IMHO overpromised and underdelivered. I'm sure they do some things really well, but I believe AT A MINIMUM, you have to deliver what you say I'm paying for. As specified...this place fell short. 3 stars and only because my Molcajete had good flavors...

Susan A.

Yelp
Overpriced rather flavorless food. $4 for a Mexican coke. Chips were greasy and needed salt. Salsa tasted odd. Bathroom had no ventilation. Not visiting again.

Yelp
This place is amazing! So worth the drive from the Southside. I grew up in South Houston and this place took me right back to the TexMex Taquerias I so love. Service was great, food authentic and if you've never had a Michelada..(spicy beer/Bloody Mary hybrid) JUST do it! The ceviche was a perfect blend of fresh seafood..lime..cilantro and jalepeno Served chilled with fresh tortilla chips.. So refreshing on a hot day. #eatthelocals

Yelp
This is where the serious mexican food fans go! Everything was so authentic and the flavors were amazing! You order up front and they let you know when it's ready. We started out with the Salsa Bar-so many flavorful salsas. We ordered chips with queso and guacamole-their guacamole had great spices in it. It was addicting! My friend and I split the chicken and steak fajitas-the flavor was great! It came with more guacamole, cheese, beans etc. Our other friend got the Wet Burrito-it was huge! She loved it but had to take 2/3 of it home! Then we had a slice of carrot cake to celebrate my friend's birthday. It had been in the refrigerator at the front - it was more delicious than we anticipated. Definitely will be taking more people here. I think it is my new favorite Mexican restaurant.

Sherry J.

Yelp
So disappointed got fajitas with shrimp. The shrimp was watery and tough. Nothing has seasoning, even the salsa I got from the salsa bar wasn't even spicy. I'm so mad I wasted a cheat meal at this place! For the prices I'm expecting good food. THIS IS NOT IT. The beans and rice are decent, I like to say good thing also. The staff is very friendly and the place is very cute inside. Bery clean. But this is not a nursing home, season the food.

Yelp
Calaveras is a cool, quirky little joint that dishes up some first class grub. While on our way to Yelp!s Movie Night On the Green, we decided to knock out a bookmark and try someplace new. Wife selected Calaveras from the list, and that was that. We found the place very easily (right on the corner of Lewis and Admiral) and parked a block or so away. At Calaveras, you order and pay at the counter, and they bring it to you when it's done. If you need a few minutes to pore over the rather large menu, you can grab one and go to your table. Once you've decided, you place your order, pay, and proceed to the salsa bar/drink station. Many good salsa choices are available, and when they say one is 'hot'.... it's 'hot'.... not sorta hot.... not kinda hot.... but "holy singed tastebuds, Batman' hot.... The creamy habanero was deceptively calm looking just sitting there on the salsa bar.... teasing me by looking so creamy and wonderful.... until it hit my tastebuds... then it was like liquid fire.... Seriously, it wasn't that hot.... but 'hot' means hot..... We started with a bowl of white queso and guacamole. The queso was seriously one of the best I've ever had. Hands down. The guac was fresh, chunky and good. That said, it could have used a tad bit more lime juice, to fit my personal preference. However, that didn't stop me from eating the entire bowl. By myself. The Wife had the Pollo Loco (I think that was the name.... chicken w onions and peppers), and I, of course.... had Pork Chile Verde.... I know, right? The Wife's order was extremely well seasoned and cooked. The breast meat was maybe a tad dry, but that's breast meat for you, so no points off there. It had a deep, complex flavor that really made me want to try more. Beans and rice were both very good, with the rice really excelling. I know.... how can a side of rice be that good? This was. Something in the dish gave it a slightly earthy taste that was just really refreshing. My Pork Chile Verde, was sadly, not what I had hoped it would be. Overall, my entire dish was just slightly lukewarm. Beans and rice were, as ,mentioned, quite tasty, even lukewarm. The Verde was a disappointment. The meat was left in large chunks, which told me it hadn't cooked NEARLY long enough. It was dry and pretty bland. The sauce was lacking any serious punch or real flavor. And keep in mind, this was my 3rd round of Verde in 6 days.... so I had some fresh comparisons. All that said, we'll be back. One slightly off dish out an entire evening isn't enough to deter me from giving Calaveras a second chance, because they have a rotisserie-looking chicken that I really need to take a shot at. If it's half as good as the picture on the menu, it'll be awesome. Again, great queso, great guac, and overall, great food, coupled with a cool little diner look and feel. Definitely make it a point to stop in and see for yourself.

Yelp
After reading some stellar reviews, I decided I had to try this place! I went in after 1pm, so well after any lunch rush. The style is as some people said: order at the front, get your drinks/chips, get your own drink and salsa from the salsa bar and then take a seat. We chose the tomatillo sauce which was ok, and the spicier red salsa (can't remember the name!) and it was pretty good. I ordered the chili verde which came w/ rice, beans, and tortillas. The beans were good (a touch bland) and it tasted like they had chorizo mixed in. The rice had little taste to it unfortunately. The chili verde had a very yummy sauce, but the pork needed to be a little more tender. If I could give this place 3.5 stars I would, but I thought I'd round up to a 4.

Yelp
We went here Thursday night for a drink before heading to another engagement. Good service, tacos were ok & a bit overpriced. The margaritas tasted good but had zero alcohol, which was disappointing since they cost 5.99 and they were served in plastic cups, not plastic Margarita cups, but clear Solo cups!!

Yelp
This place had been on my "Go-To List" for a while. I got a burrito (forgot exactly which one. The one covered with cheese!) with carne asada. It was a solid burrito. They also have a salsa bar, which was cool/unexpected. You can choose mild to super hot salsa. Prices here aren't bad, too.

Yelp
Love this place & the unique, fun & colorful decor. Good food & friendly service. You really do get way more food than what you pay for...which is NEVER a bad thing! Definitely returning!

Yelp
This is one heck of a hard working place and they may be short staffed or just worn out. I hope and hope and hope they get it together. For as much as they are charging now (totally get it) I would just like for people to be nice when waiting on me and I'm dropping a $130+. The owner reached out and apologized so I will continue to go.

Yelp
I asked the only dude I know in Tulsa anymore where to eat. He only gave one suggestion, and it turned out it's the only one we needed. My traveling companion caught a nasty case of bird flu, and we needed spicy everything. We went to Calaveras and ordered pozole verde and a steak quesadilla. The pozole was amazing. My sick friend makes her own very very very good pozole and loved theirs. The quesadilla was oooey and gooey and delicious. I also ordered a frozen margarita, because that's what you do when you're out of town. It was pretty standard. Here's the real reason to go. THAT SALSA BAR. That salsa was so good. Every salsa I tried was so so good. It was the perfect send off from Tulsa and filled me up for the rest of the day. Counter service A Food A++ Salsa Bar A+++++++++

Yelp
We had a going away party here for a co-worker. There were 18 of us. Everyone agreed their food was amazing. I had the street tacos; one beef and one pork. I like bed the salsa and accouterments on the bar. The regular mild salsa has a surprising flavor. It is really good but possibly has a nonstandard spice. It really compliments the salsa. Parking is a bit of a challenge at lunch but there is community parking right across the street if you can find a place during the noon hour. Luckily I did. Calaveras almost a fast food restaurant in you order at the front, serve your own drink and salsa, but they deliver your food to you. Prices were reasonable albeit a bit more than true fast food Mexican and it exceeds in quality!
