"Calcutta Kitchens is a grab-and-go lunch spot that also sells Indian grocery items and housemade simmer sauces. There’s usually a plant-based and a meat-based tiffin option, as well as chai and classic snacks like samosa chaat. Dishes include saag lamb with basmati rice, and crisp potato patties topped with pea curry served with tamarind chutney. Calcutta works great when you want a low-effort (and budget-friendly) meal, or you can grab a table inside and admire the window-side displays of hand-painted tumblers and spice jars as you sip on a cold lemonade." - anne cruz

Best Indian around! This food is medicinal! The chef cooks the spices and herbs properly. The food has a very nice heat! I’ll definitely be looking into the cooking classes that the owner provides. I’m surprised I didn’t discover this place sooner. The owner is very sweet and present. There are daily changes in the menu which are up on the Instagram. Today is Tikki Masala and I definitely will be visiting today just to try it. There were daily drinks as well, such as, Golden milk, mango lassi and a iced mint tea! I appreciated the items sold in the store which was a great mix of Asian cuisine and some other cute items like flower seeds, gardening books and even handmade incense. There was even my favorite spice Asafoetida powder which isn’t often sold in stores. Asafoetida is a special flavor that usually isn’t mentioned in recipes online but is the unique flavor that is found in certain south Asian meals. I previously had to go to Hyde park just to get it! There are even fresh curry leaves in the refrigerator! Now I can make my own curries which I love to do! While there is a lot packed into this tiny place there is still plenty of room and a comforting charm of energy here. Check it out! Buy local!

The name of the restaurant has attracted us since we're Bengali. The mini grocery was really cute. We brought mango cutney, nimbu pani, and chips. The mango chutney was good. The nimbu pani had some extra black salt in it for my taste preferences, but my spouse liked it. I tried the sample rice dessert, but the rose essence took over the main flavor of the dish, so we didn't order it. We had mughlai chicken, rice, pickles, and lentils. Mughlai chicken: too much oil mixed with the curry itself, which is why it was hard to taste the currys' flavor itself. Mughlai chicken is a thicker based curry in general. I think the nut paste and yogurt could've been cooked more. It truly lacked flavor from my end. Lentil: tasted better with the pickles Pickle: I was told that it would be mango pickle, but it had other vegetables in it. Wish it was homemade, but it was Deep branded pickles served. I think it was a hit & miss from our end as they have different dishes on different days. I think we'll call in advance to ask what they're serving for next time. I will tell others in NYC to stop by the store if they're around this area. No refund is necessary as I see the owner offering refunds to other reviewers.

Yes, yes, yes, stop here! Adorable building from the outside and lovely, well stocked, and clean inside. Greeted and served by a friendly young lady-I had a small bite there and then took a lot to-go. The Pav Bhaji was the absolute bomb! The flavor-wow. Full of flavor. Kerala Chicken Dry Curry was also delicious. Absolutely will stop in again next time I’m in town.

Google
Very cute place that for sure be on the Kingston gems guide. The place serves food to go or eat in, frozen foods to take home, and also a variety of dry goods and sauces some imported and some from small businesses around. We got some of their jarred sauces and Alphonso mango purée because we love making mango lassis at home. We also got some samosas as a snack to go. They were delicious, well balanced spices, and the chutney that came with them was a great addition, fresh and only added to the flavor balance. We’re excited to come back and would definitely recommend.

Google
Was surprised to see a desi place like this in Kingston and when we went there wasn’t disappointed. The food ,decor and service overall just brightened our day . Especially didn’t expect the food to be halal but the owner(I believe) confirmed it (it was really nice to meet her). It would be our go to place whenever we go to Kingston. Highly Recommended

Google
We loved this shop! Everything we had was terrific. We tried both of the daily tiffin (chicken and vegetarian), the kheer, limeade and the rosemary shortbread and the flavors were terrific. There is a great selection of grocery items as well and we got a perfect mango, a mango lassi and some spicy snack mix. All great and we left happy. This is the kind of place you will want to go back to again and again.

Google
The best! The food is cooked with love, the owner is so great and it is always something new to try. I used the catering service, and that was also excellent! 5 stars all around!

Google
Note that I write this review as I’m still sitting at my table; the food is so good that I’m giving this place a 5 star review in real time 🤤 I was a bit apprehensive about the steep price point for what seemed to be a small platter of food, but as soon as I had the first bite of chickpeas, I was sold a million times over. I went all in and got myself the chicken/chickpea combo with a side of yogurt sauce, all of it equally amazing! The chicken had enough of a kick that I didn’t even need to open up the small container of chili sauce this comes with (choose your own adventure, I personally can’t hang with lots of spiciness). The portions are actually pretty solid, but do keep in mind that a combo runs about $20 so maybe not something you’re picking up regularly if you’re trying to be thrifty. This place is the real deal when it comes to Indian food in the area (I’d even argue it rivals some of the spots in NYC). A must try in Kingston! 👏🏽

Yelp
I go to Calcutta Kitchen regularly and really enjoy their food. It is high quality and authentic. The store/restaurant is cozy and the employees are very friendly. It is a bit overpriced which is why I took off a star. I highly recommend checking it out!

Yelp
I wanted to stop in here after seeing all of the great reviews. My friend and I had Tiffin 1, which was a chicken dish with rice. He got some samosas which were good, and I got the Indian Cole slaw which was also good. The Indian spices were delicious throughout. The cashier wasn't particularly friendly and was a bit distracted when we were cashing out, but overall we enjoyed our dining experience and definitely plan to return! The inside was nice- we were comfortable. There wasn't a lot of seating because it's mostly for takeout, but there was a table for 2 and a long table that could be split across groups

Yelp
Excellent Indian food and market! Highly recommend!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A must try when you're in Kingston

Yelp
Several months later and I find myself with a little "Calcutta Problem". Which is to say that I crave their food on a regular basis. Check them out! So fantastic! The daily tiffins are amazing and the products sold in their market are a cut above. Don't miss the Chai either. ;)

Yelp
Amazing spot! Cute space. Friendly service - she took time to explain ingredients to us. Love that you can do take out or eat in. They have different dishes everyday. We had 2 samosas which were the best ever tasted, basmati rice, ragda, and an order of paratha, which was also incredible and buttery. The Ragda was good, lots of spice and came with fresh slaw and cilantro yogurt sauce to tamp down the heat. Also love the little market with gifts including their own Indian sauces, chutneys and spice blends. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
A wonderful touch of nostalgia, loved browsing the coffee table book about Calcutta. Food was good too, Very pleasant service staff.

Yelp
Owner is incredibly rude, and I don't trust their food safety. Will not be returning.

Yelp
Love this place. Have been three times now. Every time I run errands in Kingston I get their limeade, their samosas, and something to go for later. I've had. A couple different curries and was impressed by all of them. The limeade is unique but if you like a salty spiced and lightly sweet drink you'll like this. The store is also super cute!

Sean D.

Yelp
Wonderful new Indian takeaway and pantry. They make their own limeade, and the food dishes always include one meat and one vegetarian choice, which is great. Friendly, smiley, service and amazing great meals!

Yelp
My friend and I had the samosas and bought a selection of delicious things and we decided to come back every possible opportunity. Great atmosphere. A mix of prepared foods and things to take home plus cute stuff and they were so nice.

Yelp
Great Indian food to go, spices, chutneys, breads, and basmati rice. This is now our go-to place when we are craving for Indian food in Kingston. Not much lunch menu, but there's always a vegetarian and meat dish, and the samosas tastes great. I, myself prefer a very small selection of dishes, rather than a whole lot where the quality of cooking is nil. This place will provide you simple, authentic, meals and that's most important! Very family-life atmosphere, few tables/chairs inside if you want to eat-in, as well as some tables outdoors where you can watch the traffic along Broadway.

Yelp
Everything we had was phenomenal! I grew up on Indian food and this place is delicious. Loved the tea I had also.

April M.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious. The meals are reasonably priced and the chai tea has free refills if you request a mug. Make sure to try the short bread cookies and samosas!

Yelp
One of those grocery stores where you wander in and casually drop a paycheck before you know what happened. Food was yummy and service extremely friendly.
