We visited CFH on a recent visit to the area based on the strength of the great food and experience we had at Andrew Gruel's Slapfish. Unfortunately, the two menu items we ordered were mediocre at best.
I ordered the fish tacos ($18.50 for two), expecting a plate of fresh, hot, flaky white fish with amazing toppings like you find at many small family-owned restaurants all over Southern California. Instead, they arrived cold and with flat, apparently from frozen, oily pieces of fish that were absolutely inedible. This was probably the worst pieces of fish I've ever had anywhere. Boyfriend ordered the fish sandwich ($16, served with fries) with the same terrible fish, but luckily for him, the sandwich was mostly just cold slaw with hardly any fish on it. Maybe our mistake was ordering the fish grilled instead of fried? Regardless, I can't believe this was served to anyone.
Service was not good as the place was not busy and we waited 20-30 minutes for our food to arrive, and it was cold when it was served, which indicates that it sat there while our server was off doing something else.
When the server asked me how my uneaten food was, I was honest and told her it was terrible. Boyfriend was hungry, so he ate his, but said it was awful. I ate some of the fries, but could not and would not eat the tacos. I had a terrible taste of awful fish in my mouth all the way home from just one bite. (I eat fish daily, and have a close to pescatarian diet, so I am familiar with all kinds of fish and seafood).
The manager, Manny, came over to talk with us. He took the tacos off the bill, and offered to give us complimentary food if we would come back. He was very nice, even following us out of the restaurant to apologize and ask us to come back. The one star is only for him. Everything else gets zero stars.
Maybe the other dishes are better, but this experience was very disappointing for a seafood restaurant with premium prices. The food and service really need to improve.
