NYC’s Best Restaurants and Bars for Taco Tuesday | Eater

"Beloved (or otherwise) in the neighborhood for the iconic oversized margarita statue tipping out of the exposed brick walls, a Taco Tuesday at Caliente is a bucket list item for any New Yorker. Nights often start here at the interactive salsero station where guests customize guacamole smashed in a molcajete and progress to tacos filled with the traditional fillings and some more new-school options, like crispy panko-crusted cauliflower." - Vox Creative

Always a must do for me in New York. Great food and great margaritas. My favorite here is the frozen raspberry margarita! The guacamole is fresh and tasty and you can ask for it at whatever spice level you prefer. This time I got the chicken poblano enchiladas, and the sauce on then is addictive! The black beans and rice come out in an iron skillet and are really tasty as well.

This spot is in the village which is always nostalgic for me. No reservations needed. Guacamole is sooo good, made fresh. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and it tasted like the chicken was marinated in lime. Taste like a piece of heaven. Cooked perfectly. The coconut margarita was delicious and hit the spot. You must go here! The service was good and quick. I highly recommend.

This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the city hands-down! They have the greatest margaritas. One of the best and most unique parts of Caliente is the salsa bar where the make fresh salsa and guacamole per order, to your liking. This place might have the best guacamole in the entire world to be honest with you. Staff is always friendly, menu had a wide variety of selections, and it’s in spot that’s pretty east time find / get to. Don’t miss out on this gem.

Sat outside on the enclosed patio at sunset, was a nice view. Everything from the minute we walked in and greeted to the end of dinner was great. Friendly and courteous staff made the night. Appetizers of steak tacos and chips and homemade guacamole was delicious. Generous portions for dinner, steak burrito was huge.

Great food and lovely service! The drinks were weak, but the food made up for it! A big menu of vegetarian options, and the nachos and street corn were both amazing! Large space and good ambience, quiet enough to have a good conversation. I tried the pineapple margarita but it didn't have a punch to it.

They have the best margaritas! We went in without any expectations and were pleasantly surprised. This place did not require any reservation, their service was quick and their food, excellent. Special mention to their live salsa and guacamole bar. A big shoutout to Jesus R who made sure we had a good time!

Jesús is a fantastic server, he did such a great job from start to finish. My mom and I really enjoyed the food and atmosphere! Looking forward to coming back again soon. Thank you so much!

i ordered the carne asada tacos (my usual go-to at any taqueria). overall, the tacos were extremely tasty and left me craving more. the meat was perfectly seasoned/marinated. the marinade flavors were soaked deep into the meat, and the outside of it was perfectly charred. with the squeeze of lime, cilantro, and green salsa, the flavors were perfection. the only suggestion i have is giving each taco two corn shells instead of one (the juices caused it to be moist pretty quick and rip through the bottom) and also the option to add white onions. all in all amazing tacos— would definitely recommend checking them out

Yelp
Armando and the rest of the staff here were AMAZING!! It was my friends birthday and they made it so so special. Drinks were amazing and it was such a fun time

Yelp
This place is amazing! Honestly jealous of the locals because they have this gem so close to them. Our server, Sophia, was amazing and very attentive. We ordered the queso fundido for our appetizer and it was delicious. It has black and pinto beans, avocado, cheese, etc. Absolutely delish! It reminded me of a rotel! For my entree, I ordered a taco salad and I was not disappointed! That steak was WELL seasoned. It comes with a salsa dressing but you honestly don't need it because it comes with sour cream and guacamole. Such a great salad and the shell was nice and crunchy! 10/10 would definitely recommend! For my drink, I ordered a large coconut frozen margarita! Very good! It had fresh coconut flakes on top! Amazing coconut flavor! Put this place on your list! You'll be glad you did :)

Yelp
So a friend wanted to join me for brunch because it was Mother's Day and my mom recently passed away. We got here around 1:30. They had a brunch menu and I got the brunch burger and my friend got the BLT. I was asked about desired doneness for my burger and I asked for medium well. Both came with fries. Brunch also jbcluded a Hurricane sized drink. I ordered the classsic frozen margaruta and he had a bloody mary. We also ordered medium spiced guacamole for 2 as an appetizer. The guacanmole and drinks came out first. The tortilla chips were fresh and hot. The guacamole was chunky and medium level was enough so you get heat but it was manageable. When the food came, both my burger and his sandwich looked huge. I took my egg off the burger to eat on the sude because I thought it would be runny which it wasn't. The burger, even without egg, waa almost too big to fit in my mouth. The meat was flavorful and not dry. The fries still had the skin on which I liked and the spicy aioli.was great. Our waiter checked on us frequently but not to a bothersome level. The frozen margarita was good almost too thick for the straw. It was strong but not too strong.

Yelp
This made the list of places to eat during our weekend birthday celebration in Manhattan. The food was great. Service was top notch. They made it extra special for our daughter's birthday. The whole restaurant staff came to sing Happy Birthday.

Yelp
What a busy spot! It's always packed so I never looked twice until a friend invited me to go for margaritas on a Friday night. As expected, it was very busy and people were sitting indoors and outdoors. However, it was surprisingly deep inside and had a lot of seating. Their margaritas and cocktails are very delicious. There is even a margarita flight that you can get. We started off with a $14 margarita (8oz), but upgraded to a $22 pina colada (24oz). I also ordered al pastor tacos (2pc) and that was good, but overpriced.

Yelp
Went in with a larger group last night before a comedy show and had a good time! The decor in the restaurant is very cute! They had such a wide fun variety of drinks!! The food was all good! I only got a picture of the sampler platter and everything was really good!! We started off with the guacamole and that was really great- you could tell it was just put together right before it was so fresh! The enchiladas were full of flavor!

Yelp
The restaurant is supremely busy so do yourself a favor and make a reservation. We came in on a Saturday evening and started with the picadera as an appetizer. Everything on the plate exceeded my expectations in terms of flavor and presentation. For our entrees we had a chimichanga and a quesadilla. We were not disappointed. I've had Mexican and Tex-Mex at many locales and this eatery exceeded my standards. In addition, we had large size margaritas and only needed 1 to feel it! I highly recommend this place for a casual or date based dinner. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
One of my go to spots when in the City. We get chips with salsa and guac, which I can never seem to get a picture of because we tend to dig in as soon as it comes. We always get the Picadera Platter because it is absolutely amazing and just so flavorful. The 24oz Margaritas are a must! Love the ambience it's cute and the times we've gone luckily it hasn't been that busy. Love this place!

Yelp
A lot.. this would be my only word for this place. It's in a great location but the area around the bar is so cramped and it was so loud you can't hear yourself lol the margarita was okay even though they messed it up but that's probably why we were a 1 and done. Chips and salsa were a 10, customer service was a 10 but I felt rushed. Maybe I'll come back and sit outside when it get warmer

Justin G.

Yelp
Always a good experience with Alberto today I waited 10 min for evgenia to come back to the bar asked for my lunch to go she had to find out Ig I could do that first that took almost another 10 min I finally order after waiting additional 20 min I ask for my burger now Evgenia and Manager has an attitude like I did something wrong absolutely ridiculous.

Yelp
Solid Mexican restaurant. While the place looks spacious from the outside, a lot of it is outdoor seating and there was a wait if you do not have a reservation. Fortunately, the bar seating is first come first serve and you can order both food and drinks. You get free chips and salsa. The guac was solid. I ordered the birria quesadilla, they said it was popular and I liked it. Service was good. Good restaurant if you're in the area.

Yelp
nachos - generous amount of hearty brisket - very tasty - a steal for $15 - billed as an appetizer, but took me a while to finish it salad - really good, very large portion, filled me up for the day, all ingredients were still in easily acceptable to good condition, even after me packing it tight into a container, taking it home on the subway, putting it into a fridge that may or may not be on sometimes, taking it onto the subway again, putting it into the refrigerator at work, taking it out, then shoveling it into my mouth street corn - buttery, sweet and delicious - of course it was - it was street corn - the extra sauce (goop) that was left over served as a nice dipping sauce for my fries fries - fine - nothing special - fine - not a waste for a diet cheat day, but I've had better

Yelp
I will never not be here on Thursday for their large margarita happy hour, the best service, love the ambiance and at this point my friends and I are usuals so they treat us like family LOL. I will say, I do gatekeep this place for their happy hour but if you're reading this and thinking of going and love margs, do a Thursday!

Yelp
BEST frozen passion fruit mezcalita ever !! Steak quesadilla was good ! Sort of basic, but good quality all over. Play list is trash ! Not a single Spanish song played once for a Mexican spot that is absurd!!! especially on cinco de mayo!! Armando was an amazing server with good personality and immaculate service !! Make sure to ask for him !!!
google avatar

Erin C.

Yelp
To reminisce about our Mexican holiday, we came to the right spot. Casual but not too casual. Lively ambiance with groups or dates (mainly in the outdoor covered area). We had a few watermelon mezcal margaritas with complimentary chips after some shopping. You have the option to get a small or a large glass for the margaritas. We sat right by the window for prime people watching. All service was very friendly. They also make fresh guacamole on-site, so we will have to try it next time.

Yelp
Came here for guacamole and drinks - how could you go wrong! We requested to sit outside as it was (finally!) nice out in the city but the outdoor enclosed area was a SAUNA. Still, for popping in on a weekend, was happy to be seated immediately. We each ordered a large cocktail and they are LARGE. My Spicy Passion was great. My partner ordered the Miami Vice which was strong and sweet, and the third person in our party ordered the Mojitorita. We also ordered guacamole for the table which was supposed to be "spicy" but tasted like regular guacamole. Had to request additional chips and salsa as the servings of food weren't nearly as large. The total came to over $120 which felt expensive for what it was. Overall, I'd come back for a giant drink if I was in a pinch and in the neighborhood, but likely won't go out of my way to return.

Yelp
A ton of outdoor seating, covered in a patio-like setting. A great place to enjoy drinks and great mexican food outside on a nice day. The fajitas are excellent. I also like their nachos, quesadillas, mexican street corn - and the tacos are big. I give them bonus points for complimentary chips and salsa, which seems to be a rarity these days.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised here. We've been before but the food seems to have gotten better as we really enjoyed what we had. Lots of free chips and salsa with drinks, nice veggie quesadilla with lots of roasted veg and guac. My friend enjoyed the taco salad too.

Yelp
Stopped in Greenwich Village for a bit of Mexican food recommended by a family member. We were seated on the patio sidewalk which was heated and warm. Food - 3 stars Had grilled Mahi - Mahi tacos served on corn tortillas. Only two tacos with no sides 3 stars. For the price I would not get it again. Maybe for three tacos but not two tacos and no sides. Ceviche 3 stars - presented nicely but the flavor was lacking. Definitely add lime and salt to it. The Large Mojito drink is NOT your normal Mojito. More Mexican Margarita style not a TRUE Cuban Mojito. Disappointed in it. 2 Stars Service on. 3 stars.

Yelp
Nice bar with some outdoor tables, nice drinks and friendly staff. My wife had a pina colada and I had a frozen margarita and both were very tasty. They also gave us tortilla chips and sauce even though we didn't order any food. The Mexican bartender was friendly and I felt as if I was in Cancun. There are some outdoor tables but they were all taken even though it was on a Wednesday late afternoon. They have another outdoor area which is enclosed. They should open it during summer months.

Yelp
We were on a day date with my husband, we were starting to get hungry. Now mind you we've been in this area many many times but for some reason didn't see this restaurant until we went that day. It was around 4 -430pm, so not a big crowd. We sat at the bar and decided to do a couple appetizers and drinks. The bathrooms are located downstairs behing the right side of the bar. They do have patio dining, but for me i was happy sitting at the bar. Of course, because of where we were we started with tequila shots :) The bartender was very nice, and that restaurant had like 3 bar menu pages of tequila. We ordered the ceviche and queso fundido con carne. They do serve complimentary chips and salsa. Definitely the next time we go back we are going to try one of their giant margaritas. Its called Gigante margarita, the glass is huge definitely good for 2 people. So if you are in the area stop in and have a drink or 4 LOL!! enjoy!!

Yelp
We were looking for a place to get some food and drinks and came across this cute Mexican restaurant. We were seated really quickly and sat in their covered outdoor seating, which was warm and very nice. I got a steak burger and it was amazing. The spicy fries come with Tajin so they're not that spicy but not to mild either. The service was OK. Our waiter kind of moved us along quickly or quicker than normal especially because the restaurant was not that busy. I also got a classic margarita, and it was very good!
google avatar

Kanga R.

Yelp
My friend and I had such a great experience here with Jesus as our waiter! He was very friendly, funny and accommodating. The food was good, the margaritas were mediocre but it as an overall fitting place for us to go for a quick bite and pleasant vibes while other places in the surrounding neighborhood were booked.
google avatar

Yelp
After walking around West Village for awhile looking for somewhere that could seat a walk in, we were finally successful with this place!!! They had a great patio & friendly staff. We shared their guac "for 2" and it was huge! There was 4 of us & it was plenty of guac. I got shrimp tacos & loved the peppers that came on top. Overall, everyone was pleased with their meals. Good place to stop into on a whim if you don't have a reservation anywhere!
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I came across Caliente Cab while exploring Greenwich Village. Great location with patio seating to people watch and enjoy some sunshine too! We started off with some margaritas. I got a small prickly pear (8 oz) and my husband got a large skinny cucumber (24 oz) margarita. I started giggling when I saw the size difference! I opted for the small so I could try multiple flavors. There is a margarita sampler, but we didn't learn about this until I started doing my own sampling. We started off with ceviche. So good! Doesn't come with chips, which was a good thing for us as we have been eating our way through the city. For lunch, we ordered the chicken and shrimp tacos. Decent portion size! Option to add beans and rice, but I got another margarita. Don't judge! Ha! Our server was great! She kept checking in on us and allowed us to lounge around too.
google avatar

Morgan H.

Yelp
Came here around 8PM on a Tuesday with two other people and we opted for a seat at the bar. The place is solid, Service was fast and the drinks were good. I got the cucumber margarita and a coconut lime margarita. The coconut lime margarita was perfect and the cucumber was refreshing. You can opt for a 8oz or a 22 oz but be warned, the 22 oz was massive but definitely worth it.

Yelp
This spot is super cute with QUICK service. I visited caliente cab with my cousin on 01/13/2024 and we ordered 2 different margaritas as well as quesedillas. The mojito Rita was refreshing and made with quality. They have a wide variety of drinks. The restaurant is very dim on the inside and decorated in Mexican culture decor. They offer closed in outdoor seating. They can accommodate large and small parties. Our waiter was quick with our service and friendly. They also offer complimentary chips & sal

Yelp
Haven't been to caliente cab in 10 years Was pleasantly surprised that it still had a great vibe Service was quick and professional Fav dish is the fresh guacamole We had the special appetizer of the day and it was amazing It had a little bit of everything Steak / chicken / shrimp / cheese On a steaming hot stone bowl Presentation was amazing !!! Enough for two to share and plenty to take home Everything was fresh and made to order You really felt like you were in Mexico. Food tasted and looked very authentic Must try if your in the area

Yelp
Jesus took such good care of us. Best server ever, wonderful man, beautiful spirit and eyes. WILL be COMING back. get the Skinny cucumber margarita. The large one.

Yelp
Good Place My Bestie and I came to the restaurant by mistake, we were looking for another restaurant but we saw this one and decided to drink huge Margaritas. The door is hidden but look for flowers in a wall and you will find it. The hostess showed us our table, near the window and the server came right awya. We ordered the Huge Margarita, Tamarind Flavor, one tequila flight and guaca-chips. When the order arrived, the flavor of the Margarita was not correct, the server appolozised and stated she heard Mango and not Tamarind. We said it was fine, that we undertood why she didnt heard. It was a Wednesday before Thanksgiving, they weren't many people, a lot of tables available, but in one table, a group of 7 people was seated and didn't stop screaming and didn't let anyone in the restaurant heard anything. The manager didn't said anything to them, many were complaining because they weren't talking loud, they were screaming! That is why the server didn't heard the correct flavor. The Margarita was very good, maybe they need to add more tequila, but it was good. Overall the service is good but they need to add more tequila to the drinks.

Yelp
Great ambiance, food was delicious for our ladies night drinks were great. Fast service as well! We went there for galentines and the bartender gave us shots on them and we really had a great time stood there for hours. Location is easy to get to as well.

Yelp
Came here for National Margarita Day and this place just might be my go-to place to celebrate! I saw on social media that Caliente Cab was offering Margarita flights and I jetted so fast to try one myself! The flight drinks are small, BUT I shared a flight with a friend and we felt itttttt. So like if you're having a night out and willing to drop $$ for the food, then I would totally recommend your own flight. But if you're on a budget, sharing the flight is still a great choice! Shout out to the waiter who kept trying to upsell, though! #TheHustleIsReal The default flavors of the margarita flight were: - Classic House Margarita - Prickly Pear - Watermelon - Mango We also ended up getting a fajita style quesadilla with grilled skirt steak and it was good! While the restaurant is a little too dark for me, it's good to know that there's a good Mexican spot in the West Village!

Yelp
Came here with my friends for a celebration and we had a blast. The ambience is absolutely gorgeous, from the moment you want into the restaurant, you feel like you're on vacation on another island. The service is awesome, our waiter was the best! We all ordered large mojitos and margaritas and they were delicious. We also ordered shots of patron which were pretty expensive. We ordered the freshly made guacamole which as expected was amazing. My friend and I shared three different tacos- steak, chicken and pork. Our favorite was the chicken surprisingly. My other friend ordered a burrito and the other enchiladas. They both enjoyed their meals. The bill was a bit on the expensive side, not what I expected but it was definitely more of the drinks than the food.

Madison J.

Yelp
Sooo good. Outdoor seating is super cute! I got the gigantic marg (mango). It was such a good deal, originally 60 bucks but for some reason (idk if it's every Thursday) but it was half off so me and my friend basically paid nothing for such a large drink! It didn't taste like mango, honestly more like orange mango which isn't bad just wanted more of a mango flavor... but guys what a good deal.

Cristina W.

Yelp
Nice place to go for a low key evening with friends. Good service and drinks. Enjoyed the food.

Blaise Ylianna H.

Yelp
ARMANDO WAS FANTASTIC! Kind service, amazing birthday treat (scared me haha I loved it!) and great vibes. Thank you, Armando!
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Service is friendly. Food came out at a decent time. The drinks were tasty but didn't do the job. I ordered a 24 oz Sangria- I recommend a mixed drink. The tacos were delicious. I always judge a Mexican restaurant by the salsa at the table.. From 1-10 I'd rate this salsa as a 5. The location is perfect.. right at the corner with an outside patio so you can sit eat talk and people watch.

Alexis M.

Yelp
Prices are reasonable & margaritas are bomb! I love how they don't taste artificially sweet but still have plenty of flavor and strength. Some of the best I've had in NYC.

Jasmine H.

Yelp
Armando is the BEST! Fantastic recommendations for the meal. Great tequila recommendations. Gave us the BEST EXOERIENCE.
google avatar

Lori R.

Yelp
This place was so much fun! It has an abundance of indoor and outdoor seating, and the food and drinks were quite tasty! I ordered the ginger margarita (delicious), the gigante frozen margarita (to share, totally worth it if that's your thing), chips and guac, and pollo asado tacos. The menu i"was reasonably priced and the food was tasty and the portions were filling. Overall I really enjoyed this place, and would totally go back with friends, and you should too!

frank p.

Yelp
Food not we expected. Service was good and prompt. The ambiance was nice and lively. Would probably go back to sit at bar with appetizers

Yelp
Let's talk about it.... It's New York City: You have a TON of great food here. There is a reason this place has a 2-star review in the Food Capitol of the world. They have pretty decent food & drinks as far as taste goes, but the service is consistently lackluster and disappointing. I have been coming here since the late 1980's (!!!), but in the past decade have only come twice, with my most recent visit last night. I keep wanting to have a decent experience here but it is just consistently awful to the point I am considering just not coming back. After a night of dancing my friend and I wanted some good Mexican food & margaritas, and I suggested this place, hoping against hope that the service would be good enough that I wouldn't be embarrassed; it was a fail. The server was petulant, dismissive, and borderline hostile from the jump. A few times I called him over for napkins and again to refresh my drink, and it took a few attempts before he bothered to attend to us. We felt like we were bothering him. I also watched as he engaged the couple next to us and it appeared as though their experience was going much like our's. Then at the end of the night he mixed up the credit cards, having my friend sign on my card, and giving me her receipt to sign. When I noticed this he refused to fix it. We had to settle it between us. Simply outrageous. So, if you don't care about service at all, go ahead: The food is decent, and even pretty good. But if you're like me & at least like polite service, I would go elsewhere. There are plenty of great Mexican restaurants in New York City. Skip this one

Yelp
I love JESUS amazing service by him!! great service by Gisele too!! i love the energy and vibes so goooooood!!

Yelp
What better way to celebrate #tacotuesday then with an amazing Mexican restaurant that we visited recently! Caliente Cab has been one of our go too's for a few years. We miss the one that was uptown! Their drinks especially their margaritas are one of our favorites! Strong and tasty! Their food has also been very good as well, could use wider selection. And best of all the music, ambiance, and service is always the best! They have a great selection of indoor and outdoor seating which is amazing as the weather gets warmer. This is truly the place to visit with friends as they have large shareable drinks! (Or maybe you don't have to share at all)
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
Generous food portions! Excellent service and drinks! Caring management thank you Giselle

Daniella B.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible experience. Our server Jose was phenomenal, so attentive and helped us have an amazing new york dining experience for my birthday. The food was a 10/10. I had the torta arrachera and the steak was juicy and delicious with super delicious fries. Authentic, mexican restaurant. Wonderful staff. Would one thousand times reccomend.

Yelp
I came here only for one thing, that being the Fried Ice Cream. This consists of a glass cup with Haagen-Dazs chocolate chip ice cream coated with cinnamon flakes and deep fried until its crispy. They serve it with a chocolate drizzle at the bottom and some strawberries with whip cream. I haven't had it in a long time, but since it hit the spot and was full of flavor, I'd have to give it a score of 4z
