This was my first time here in Vegas and I would say that this hotel was alright to say the least. Upon entering the hotel, you experience a very intense cigarette smell practically 24/7 on the main casino floor. Coming from Hawaii, it was great to see the hospitality that we got from the staff members and how polite they were every single time. Entering our room, it was quite comfy and inviting. The hotel was well kept and was quite good for the price that we paid for. The bathroom, amenities, and the warm welcome we got was quite nice. Discussing the location, it was about a 10-15 minute drive away from the strip (so please keep this in mind if you are planning to head to the strip). Although, we were just a few minutes away from the world renowned Fremont Street which was an amazing experience in itself. All in all, I had a great experience here and definitely would love to come back!

I'm very glad a friend of mine alerted me to California Hotel & Casino. I stayed here twice while on a 3-week trip, and really enjoyed it. I wanted to be a bit away from the Strip, and being in the old Downtown section was fun (as was Fremont). Staff were particularly great, extremely helpful, from the front desk to the valet parking. And the restaurants and bars were enjoyable and convenient. (Tip: The ice cream store also sells delicious muffins and fruit cups for breakfast!)

Room was clean, ac was a little loud but overcame the 115 degree heat, miss having a coffee pot. Service was very good. Very close to Fremont Street and convenient to Main Street, Market Place and good parking area. Enjoyed the Plaza fireworks show from the air conditioned crossover Bridge to Mainstream area.

My last visit was at the end of May 2024. The woman at the customer service counter was very welcoming. She helped us with all the need to knows. The room was clean and housekeeping did a good job on a daily. Elevators can be a bit far from the rooms. The casino was a little dated but for the most part it’s still lots of fun. The location is perfect it’s just a block away from the Fremont and a short drive from the strip. There’s also lots of free parking here. The only downside to my stay is that one elevator of three was broken on my first night. On the second day two elevators were broken. Both elevators stayed broken for the next 5 days. It took 10-15 minutes to get on the elevator and it was packed to the brim.

Went on my 2nd and 3rd trip to Vegas and stayed at the Cal, which is always a great place for anyone, especially for the Hawai'i people. Great walking distance to the Fremont Express and other Downtown hotel and casino's. A couple issues I have is the food at Market Street Cafe and one at Aloha Specialties. I did think the quality of food has gone down since my first visit at the Cal. Although, I do understand that everyone was impacted by Covid and had to make tough decisions. However, I do miss the salad bar and it feels like the Ox tail soup tastes more a beef stew and found it odd the veggies and not having that refreshing ginger broth. On my 3rd trip, I've never seen butterfish (Cod) that has BBQ sauce on top of it. That is one of the CRAZIEST things I've heard as a Hawai'i local and asian because it's usually miso marinated butterfish. As for Aloha Specialties on the Mezzanine level at the Cal, the one issue was the spicy grilled chicken. I thought the spice level was unbearable, where I had a hard time finishing the dish. Spice wise for a dish would be something that I would experience a little fear, but just spicy enough where I can enjoy and finish it. Overall, high quality ice cream at Lappert's Ice Cream Shop, friendly staff and dealers for keeping that Aloha vibe day and night, and enjoyed having fun on the casino floor day and night with family and friends.

Google
It was a great stay. The reason for the 3 stars is the elevators. They only have 3, and one was broke the whole visit. Then, the last 2 days of my stay, 2 elevators were broke. We waited 15 minutes one time. People were riding the elevator going the up just so they could go down. My friends and I started taking the stairs to go down. It was no fun. I even rode the freight elevator once as an employee offered. Clean rooms and the cleaning staff were wonderful with extra towels. Front desk People were pleasant. Casino never paid out! Not that I am a heavy gambler, and I am very much a novice. I watched friends dump money and never paid out. I would go again, but with trepidation.

The California Hotel and Casino is a downtown casino catering to Hawaiians. There are many local favorites served in the many eateries inside. The Market Street Cafe has some great local dishes and they have their Prime Rib Special at dinner time served with their Cherries Jubilee dessert. It’s a tasty Prime Rib served with rice or potato and a vegetable. The casual atmosphere and local vibe is so welcoming, probably because I’m Asian and lived in a Hawaiian upbringing. The casino dealers are very friendly, it feels like you’re gambling with your uncles and aunts.

Usually stay at the Cal because of the tour package and proximity to Main Street hotel where I can get and return Enterprise rental cars. Miss that steak and eggs no longer on my coupons. They need to fix the west wing Elevators. They're down to one. Elevators was the current complaint. Figure they will get that straightened out eventually. Otherwise things went well.

Yelp
One of many Boyd hotels... I've stayed at all three in Downtown Las Vegas where all have many positives and negatives and the choices come down to the personal preferences and parking was mine and the Market Street Cafe was for mom. Not the greatest location if you like to stroll down Fremont Street as you have a couple blocks to walk and it can get pretty dark at night though we only plan to do so for a single night we were quite uncomfortable doing so. Market Street Cafe is their restaurant that's open 24 hrs and the place to redeem our coupons that's a huge convenience if you're like us return from a late shopping trip to Trader Joe's or jumping out of bed to start that early bird drive to avoid traffic. Parking is my jam and it's free for hotel guests...super easy as you use your room card to scan your way in and out though finding that stall is the luck of the moment and there's an elevator right beside the front desk so it's not a long journey to the parking structure. The package is through Vacations Hawaii and they take care of the luggage and meals which is why mom prefers this package tour the stress free of lugging our luggage is just at the airport and all meals are provided for so all we need to do is bring our lucky charms and hope that our favorite pull pays for the trip. Thank you!

Yelp
Even with a comp'd room for free from Sunday-Friday we left early to check into Mandalay Bay. The location is great! But, there's three elevators and only one worked our entire stay from Sun night -Wed. The wait time for the elevator was unbelievably long, overcrowded and musty smelling. Which is why we all left early and paid $300 a night for a decent living space. The room was TINY and cramped, the bathroom was dirty AF, red mold everywhere around the caulking. The shutters wouldn't stay shut. The door to the refrigerator was annoying. There's no coffee maker. The roof top pool is definitely unstable! You can feel the entire roof shake as anyone jumps in. That's more scary then the sketchy elevators.

Yelp
Not happy with the hotel, I dropped my wet towel on the dirty black stained carpet and thought no problem i can get a new one when housekeeping comes the next morning. No one ever came the next day. I returned to my room at 6:30 pm to find housekeeping never cleaned my room despite seeing them on my floor in the morning. I called housekeeping because I wanted new towels and I was told by two different California hotel staff members that you need to be on a special list at the hotel to get housekeeping and I am not on the list. I came on Vacations Hawaii which isn't cheap so I paid for my rooms, why are we not on the cleaning list? i've been coming here since I was 21 and have also come post covid and this is the first time i'm hearing about this. I was given the run around being out on hold from my hotel room phone, i finally got my towels after having to talk to three employees and being on hold for over 15 minutes. I think they were hoping I'd hang up after being on hold for so long because I was told that housekeeping had gone home for the day already since it was 6:30 pm I was also told that since I'm not on a special list, I can catch the housekeeping when i see them on the floor to ask for towels because they no longer clean all the rooms. what the heck?? And i did NOT have my "do not disturb" on which they kept accusing me of doing which makes no sense since they said Im not on their cleaning list anyways. SO MUCH DRAMA to get a new towel. Line for Market Street Cafe is 2 hours on a Thursday night if you wanna eat oxtail soup, the staff just doesn't care or they're under staffed and it's not even crowded inside. It's not worth a 2 hour wait just to get inside the market street restaurant but there isn't anywhere to eat this late here , another reason to no longer stay at these Boyd gaming properties. It's not like the restaurant is full, they just don't have staff so they seat one group of people every ten minutes with the restaurant only about 20% full. We had two huge roof fans right outside our room and it was sooooo noisy! It was hard to sleep. Lastly one of the elevators is down so it takes a looong time to go up and down to your room as it's full everytime it passes your floor. It seems like elevators are consistently out of order at this hotel. On a good note, none of my light bulbs were burnt out this trip, last time half were burnt out and i was in a dark room!

Yelp
This review is with respect to our recent stay in March 2024 only. Our stay was comped here. I was offered a suite at the California Hotel and Casino. That was a nice welcomed surprise, or so I thought. Due to our timing, we arrived early and before the 4 pm check in time. The front desk gave us the option of leaving our bags at the bell desk and waiting until check in. She informed me that our suite was located on the 20th floor. She gave us another option for an early check in to another suite on the 23td floor. She said the room is ready to use now. There was a charge for the early check in. I don't recall the amount, other than it was reasonable lol and we were tired. We opted for the early check in and took our bags to the room. Unfortunately, upon entering the room, I observed that the beds were not made and clearly were slept in UGH! I immediately felt uncomfortable. I looked in the bathroom and the same, used towels and an overall unclean feeling. What a way to start our day. It pretty much ruined the vibe here. I immediately called the front desk and I was put on hold with no one answering other than to hang up on me! Three times this occurred! I finally looked for another number and after a short wait, a person actually answered. I informed her of the problem and I was immediately transferred to the housekeeping manager cell! I informed the manager of the situation and he was very apologetic and said he would send someone up asap. Long story short, hours later, the room was cleaned and we were informed that the door lock was broken and needed to also be fixed. You could see into the room through a slit in the front door due to the uneven fit of the door. I considered a room change but we were tired. The door lock did not work during our stay unless we lifted the door up lol. Sketchy during the night. Still a problem. Sadly, due to this unfortunate start, our stay here was feeling "unlucky ". Not great when you want to win and not lose here! I have stayed here in the past and although the rooms are on the older side, usually the rooms are clean and the door locks work. For a "suite" and extra early check in fees, this was not expected. The telephone hang ups by the front desk were extremely problematic as we were tired and we wanted to know why she said the room was ready for us. We were hoping for a different room but no one answered. Service for this stay was 2 out of 5 stars Room/ suite was 2 out of 5 stars. I requested that the early check in fee be removed from the bill due to the circumstances noted above. The hotel removed the charge.

Yelp
My Boyd Sapphire card doesn't carry the clout it used to. Benefits like free parking have been removed (you have to earn a minimum number of tier points to get it unless you're staying here) and the number of comp nights and weekend availability have been curtailed. This has caused me to start gambling more with the Station Casino group which has been more generous with weekend hotel comps and better free play offers. If you too are feeling unappreciated by the Boyd Group, you may want to check out other options. Trying to qualify for an emerald level card with Boyd is ridiculous for the average gambler. I've never even been invited to a Super Bowl party here at the Cal while I was given VIP treatment by Palace Station pre-Covid. I do have to say I was treated very well at the Super Bowl party at the Gold Coast though(pre-Covid) which is a Boyd casino. I still come here because the machines here have an acceptable payout percentage but more importantly, many of my wife's relatives from Hawaiian still stay here. If it wasn't for that, I'd be spending more time at Sunset Station or their nicer casinos like the new Durango or Red Rock. Once Boyd started getting cheap with their comp offers, it didn't exactly endear me to spending all my casino time with them. It's true I haven't been able to come as often since we got our dogs but I feel I give them a reasonable amount of action when I do come. To make it difficult for me to get comp weekends is kind of a slap in the face. Sunday thru Thursday room comps is what I got with my lower level card. If Sapphire isn't worth much to Boyd, I'm sure Station will be more than happy to take care of me with the same amount of action I give Boyd by giving me free weekends and more generous freeplay. The staff here is nice and it's a cozy casino but that's not enough to motivate me to spend all my gambling time here.

Yelp
For our first trip back to Vegas since our daughter was born, we were on the fence of where to stay. We wanted to show her around the Strip hotels but also wanted some familiarity and be able to enjoy the local favorite foods we miss. We decided to book this hotel because it was right between the Strip and the hotel we needed to go to for a bowling tournament. It also was half as expensive than the Strip hotels and we got to enjoy the laid back Hawaii atmosphere of being around other locals. Win-win! The hotel room was good, a little aged but great water pressure and hot shower, comfy beds which is all we were needing since we were out and about all day. The staff were all super friendly and helpful including the dealers and pit bosses. One noticeable drawback was the smokiness of the hotel compared to the Strip hotels. The arcade area is tiny but enough to entertain our kid when there was some wait time before we checked out. They had great claw machines with squishmallow and Miraculous stuffies. The attendant that came to check and restock the machines was kind enough to give our daughter a stuffie prize since she wasn't able to win one. Thank you for that thoughtful gesture! The Market Street Cafe was exactly how we remembered it. So many memories there and lots of local food options. Got our fill of Zippy's chili, won ton min, saimin, loco moco, and our daughter's favorite, fish and chips. Delicious! The table games were good with $10 minimums compared to $15+ on the Strip. It is nice and comfortable to play til early hours without feeling nervous about the crowds. But a lot of the time, it was hard to get on the 3rd card and Let It Ride table because it was packed. At least you can safely walk over to Main Street and check their tables, only on weekends, if it is busy. Also got to visit the snack shop to pick up local treats to take home and enjoy a yummy ice cream next door at Lappert's. It was a great visit all around.

Yelp
The only reason we stay here year after year is because my mother-in-law will never stay anywhere else. Overall the rooms are okay but there's not even a coffee maker in the rooms. The absolute worst thing is that their elevators are ALWAYS broken. During our stay there was even a time people were stuck inside one. They must do something about this!!! Also I know they have a lot of elderly guests but recently my MIL celebrated her 95th bd at the Cal. The slot machines wished her a happy birthday each time and the wait staff at the Market St cafe were so great about getting a cake for her to blow out her candle but why doesn't the front desk staff pay closer attention to this? We were put at the absolute end of the hall far away from the elevator. We called and mom and her sister were moved halfway closer. The staff are all very nice, but I think the mindset of the hotel management is not really attentive to their "special" clientele who really keep this place going.

Yelp
Had the prime rib at the Market Street Cafe. Very good flavor. Service was great with both the beverage server and waitress. Cherries Jubilee comes with this meal. Have been coming here many times over the past 20 years and always look forward to this meal.

Yelp
Dump If you imagined a smelly casino inside a morgue, you get the California. The place is awful. I think the name of the hotel and the condition is one to mimic the condition on the streets of San Francisco. Shithole. Sorry, it stinks and to make it worse the machines never pay. Thanks

Joseph H.

Yelp
This casino is in dire need of upgrading and remodeling. It used to be the only reason to come here was that average players received decent comps (eg rooms). This has not been the case for a couple of years. In addition the payouts for some machines are a lot worse. Since the casino caters only to their Hawaiian clients, I don't see any positive changes on the horizon. After patronizing this casino for decades, I have moved on to other casinos with nicer rooms and amenities.

Haley T.

Yelp
Whenever we go to Vegas, we have always stayed at the Cal. The staff is always friendly when we come in and accompanying when you request for connecting rooms, or if you have any special requests. Being in downtown Fremont, I think that this hotel is very safe for me to gamble by myself or stay down during the night. I came here for my 21st birthday, and the dealers and players were very patient and teaching my the rules when I played 3 card poker and black Jack.

Yelp
Eighteen years ago was our first trip to Las vegas. I remember we stayed at the circus circus. On the second trip, we stayed at the california. Everyone knows that this is a Hawaii casino for us local travelers. It actually feels like being at home. So much people from hawaii here. Over the years. I notice my husband and I staying at hotels that are smoke-free. We stayed at Red Rock casino for this trip simply for the fact that it is smoke free and the rooms are explicit. Open the yearst when we have stayed at the Cal, the beds were very uncomfortable. You can tell that tye beds are really worn in. I start sliding to the middle of the bed. Let's not talk about the horrible experience at MainStreet Station. Smelly pillows and dirty beds at Main Street. The casino is filled with smoke that it takes days for me to get ot out of my clothes and hair. Also, why is that stupid deity of a buddha in the lobby? I refuse to stay here and I'm from Hawaii.

EditMonsterKurt ..

Yelp
My wife is from Oahu, Hawaii, and a well-known paradigm, is that many people coming from Hawaii like to stay at this casino? That's no secret. And now that I stayed here for the first time in many years of going to Vegas, I can see why. Not only is the price of a room cheaper than most casino/hotels, but the Hawaiian comfort food was delicious, also the service is far superior than most, it's literally like being in Hawaii, with a lot of Hawaiian local people working here. Even the guests, are way more friendly than any other casino in town. I even had a full on conversations with people heading up the elevator, that I didn't even know. We got upgraded to a massive suite on the 23rd floor, due to them being so heavily booked, but what a wonderful room we had, and only paid the price we would've for a king premium room. Not only was this a great stay, but even the machines were looser than most high-end casinos, and what's more this is now right across from the Circa Casino, which has a ton of really cool features, even though, we still spent most of our time in the casino at the California. I highly recommend staying here, but please have some respect. It is an older casino and hotel, but it was very clean., and though not as glitzy as some of the newer hotels, I had a great stay here, and so didmy wife... will definitely come here again

Jose P.

Yelp
Had breakfast at one of their restaurants and went well. Food quality was nice. Speed of service was good. If only the majority of Californian's would do their jobs rather than be "local tourists" and pretending to be "Vegas" don't know. Breakfast was nice. Would like to rate more stars later.

Carman W.

Yelp
Bad service when machine didn't pay correctly. Talked to two service people. Manager got involved but was no help.

Yelp
Thank you California Hotel for the comp stay! We are having fun gambling here and supporting the businesses situated here in the hotel! We have enjoyed the treatment here so far. The security noticed our room door wasn't shut closed and had the lobby call us to shut our door that was excellent and we appreciate the attention. Okay, time to head out and spend more money now...

Katy P.

Yelp
Love this hotel.... Everything a local could want all in one place. It's been awhile since we last visited. Many changes, but they still have that "Aloha" spirit they are well known for. The casino seemed a bit smaller then I remember and there are a few new restaurants. Casino is as clean as a casino can be except for the cigarette smell. I am not a smoker so it does upset my allergies a bit, but this is Las Vegas and there are a few things that you need to expect.... Drinking, gambling and smoking. The people that work here appear to love and enjoy their jobs. If you need help they are very eager to help and it's easy to find someone in any situation. Parking and Valet services is still free if you are staying at the Cal which is awesome considering it's hard to find free parking in Las Vegas. All you need to do is scan your Hotel key for entry and exit and you are on your way. Thank you California Hotel and Casino for a welcoming stay.... We'll be back

Yelp
For the past month I have been so excited to come back to this hotel for their infamous Hawaiian Local casino, and oxtail soup. I had been talking all this hype the entire 6 hour ride getting here.... We finally had a chance to drop in and go to the restaurant... I must say... it has quite changed!! Not for the better I'm afraid. Oxtail soup: was a pretty hefty price now... more carrots, and celery than anything else in the soup. Where did the mushrooms go? Where did the peanuts go? I was sad. Prime rib: it was tough, and on the dry side. The horse radish couldn't save it. A bit over cooked. Definately was not happy. Lomilomi salmon: was on the plain side... looking banged up and bruised. No tomatoes, pretty fishy.. with avocado.. eeww! This was about $60 It was exciting when there were specials.. It wouldn't have been an issue if the quality was there... I didn't even care to take photos like I usually do. Upon leaving the restaurant..went to the bathroom, slipped in the stall ( almost) fell out!! This place was looking run down... Hopefully, things get better. I don't recommend unless you are part of the gambler's package (with that handy dandy coupon book) ... I don't think I'll come back.

Nette B.

Yelp
This review is solely on the room accommodations. I checked in for 1 night and was assigned a room. After going to my room, I noticed that the carpet for one was disgusting. It looked soiled. That is not what had me annoyed as I usually use slippah's. I was more upset that there was popcorn, coins and other small items on the carpet which easily could've been picked up had a housekeeper vacuumed the carpet.  I went downstairs to express my concern and informed the MOD that since it's only a day I don't want someone to come and vacuum as I was headed out and didn't want anyone to enter my room nor did I want to switch rooms.  Overall, hoping that my email to the hotel and review will help their housekeeping team to be more thorough and that others who plan to stay here will make sure the rooms are clean.

Yelp
This is our 2nd stay at The Cal while attending The All American Rejects concert on the Fremont Street Experience. Ample parking. Fast and efficient check-in process. We were given a room this time in the West Tower. Needless to say, it is a gorgeous room, and the staff had the room welcome us with generously cool air considering the weather was already 113°F! The room was spacious, comfortable, water pressure was superb and hot water plentiful. Only sounds heard were that of the firetruck(s) when driving by. Otherwise, hardly a sound from our neighbors!

DL C.

Yelp
I travel to Vegas 2-3 times a year and mostly stay on the strip and IF I do stay in downtown Las Vegas, I usually stay at the Golden Nugget, but this trip (May 2024) I chose the Cal because there was an event there that my 86 year old father was to attend and I thought it would be easier for him to get to and from the room without any effort. Boy, was I wrong... I BOOKED and PAID for our trip months in advance, flight and hotel combo with Hawaiian Air. The room I booked was a PREMIUM, 2 queen room, non smoking. I called the reservation desk 1 week prior to confirm the room I booked. When we arrived, the front desk gentleman TRIED to get it past me and give me a STANDARD room, and then tries to give me the excuse that they are all BOOKED, and of course I say yes and one of those PREMIUM rooms should be mine because I paid for a PREMIUM not a standard. WHAT A JOKE... then he proceeds to tap, tap tap away at his keyboard and lo and behold he says to me they have ONE MORE ROOM available, shocking!!! I should've known that this little shenanigan was going to the be the start of thee most horrible stay I have EVER experienced in all my years of going to Vegas. We settle into the room and decide to wash up and go back downstairs to get something to eat at the market cafe. The bathroom sink decides to fill up with water with no signs of draining. It's now 2am, we had been traveling all day and were famished, so I assumed that it was a slow drain and by the time we came back up, it would be cleared. NOPE... so now at 4am, we have a technician in our room trying to clear the drain. Would you believe, he didn't bring ANY rags/ towels to wipe up all the DIRTY water that he was splashing all over the counter and floor!!! I watched him use the roll of toilet paper to wipe the counter, floor, and glass. I am "one of those" traveler's that sanitizes the bathroom before use and I was so disgusted and had to clean the bathroom for the 2nd time. The sun rises and I'm staring at the ceiling and I see daylight shining in...what in the world??!!! There was a crack between the roof line and the wall. I am beyond disgusted and frustrated, but I wasn't about to ruin my dad's trip! Our stay gets worse...This hotel has 3 elevators and only ONE worked the ENTIRE 3 nights that we stayed there. To have to plan our day to include a minimum wait over 30 minutes to try to get down to the casino/main floor was ridiculous. Hotel guests were getting onto the elevator going up and when it arrived at our floor it was FULL to go back down. We were one the 22nd floor. EVERY single time I needed to go downstairs to the casino, I literally had to call the front desk to alert them that we had been waiting for 30 minutes for an elevator that was empty and we could get downstairs. They were sending available security guards up to our floor to escort us to take the service elevator. Front desk customer service was horrible, room was horrible, the ONLY good thing was the concierge and the housekeeping staff who were so friendly, apologetic, and accommodating. I wish there was such a thing as ZERO stars, I will never stay at this hotel ever again.

Michael G.

Yelp
This place is on a steep decline since the old days. We have a 15 year history, and this visit 1/24 was extremely disappointing. Dingy/very poorly lit hall ways. Very dimly wit rooms - hard to see what's in your own suitcase. It looks like the "suits" are bleeding this establishment for all its worth, waiting until someone buys the building to tear down.

R K.

Yelp
I usually stay here when I'm in town for pleasure. The rooms are clean and food and staff are great. This time was a little different. The room we had was beat up. One of the dresser drawers wouldn't shut and kept sliding open. The water pressure in the shower was non existent, the AC kept running all night no matter what temperature you set it at and the street noise was very loud even being on the 20th floor. I am a big fan of this hotel, but this particular room (2031) missed the mark big time. The staff is always great and that will keep me coming back. I really hope this was a fluke and not what is to come in the future.

Yelp
Only worth coming to for the Aloha Specialties restaurant or Lappert's Ice Cream. The property itself has stupid polices that don't make sense. For example, they don't allow photo/videos even in non-gaming areas. The last time we were here, my wife took photos and videos of cool wall tiles upstairs, where the conference rooms are. She was promptly scolded by a security officer, who said this wasn't allowed. Really? Even when the video is of a wall? Stupid. Even if the video was on the casino floor or in front of a gaming table/machine, this wouldn't be against any state gaming regulations. This is just one of their stupid company policies.

Yelp
It is convenient for us to stay at The Cal because everything is familiar. We wish that the hotel rooms were better maintained. There seems to be something wrong with each room. First, the chest of drawers need to be tipped back. It sits crookedly, so that the drawers open by themselves and don't stay closed. This has happened in different rooms. Second, the trim for the shower faucet was loose. And, one of the shower doors stuck and was impossible to open while in the shower. Third, the toilet paper holder was loose. The toilet paper roll kept falling off. Also, I think it faces the wrong way. Turn it the other way, so the roll doesn't come off when tearing off the paper. Fourth, the sink never drains properly. Crud remains the sink. We appreciate the friendly workers. They are pleasant And aim to please.

Yelp
This review is strictly for the pit boss Sally. She is jut plain rude sloppy, demeaning, condescending, has a poor attitude, and no Aloha. On 2.21.2024, I was playing roulette. May was the dealer, Jayson was helping her. I think Mimi was the breaker. Anyhow, I was placing my bets when I heard Sally say spin the ball. I wasn't finished with my bets and I told Sally, you need to give me time to place my bets. She says you had plenty of time. The table wasn't that busy and I understand wanting to get as many hands/spins in an hour as you can, but I wasn't slow in placing my bets. I'm actually kind of fast because I play the same numbers. Anyway, she is just a rude person. As I sat there and played over the course of 3 hours or so, I listened to her explain to the employees how to keep the higher denomination chips in line and how video recording on phones is not allowed. Her tone and approach in dealing with employees is condescending and unprofessional. One employee asked her what she was doing , she said while standing at the roulette table, I'm watching the game. I can't remember if she said f'ing game. Such a role model for the dealers. At least she helped muck the chips. I've seen some pit bosses just stand around and not help. When you're supposed to be representing Aloha and catering to the residents of Hawaii, she is the opposite of Aloha. I think the Cal has lost that feeling of Aloha. With the new pit bosses and dealers, it's not the same. And I remember Sally for years, but she was rarely by the roulette table while I was visiting. Had she behaved like that back then, I would for sure be trying to speak to Pat about her. Her appearance is sloppy and unprofessional to say the least. At least other bosses dress appropriately. Anyhow, this is my recollection of what occurred and how it left me feeling. I have no problems with the pit bosses... ask Jenna, Heidi, Carlos, or John. I have no problems with the dealers... ask Hong, Hoan, Von, Fanaye, Lynn, Boonchai, Yong, or Lisa. I am probably the most laid back roulette player at the Cal...

Yelp
From one California to another. After leaving Disneyland California Grand (I know you read the review), we arrived at the "ninth island" and stayed here. I through it was a joke when I kept hearing about people from Hawaii staying here but it is reality. Seriously making small talk with player, "it's not what state you're from but what side of the island". I was playing on tables with people from Waipahu, Kaneohe, Honolulu, Waimanalo, Makaha, Makakilo, and Maui. I even flew back to HNL with some of them. Talk about small world. The casino is old and needs some renovation. One large pit with the popular games ranging from blackjack to face up pai gaw to 3 cards poker to craps to roulette. Based on how many dealers they have per shift determines what tables are open. Weekend mornings, the roulette table was closed. Plenty of slot machines and being a Boyd's property the reward card can be used another casinos. The hotel rooms are spacious. Two queens, a couple of recliners, desk with wall mounted TV, mini fridge. I hate mini fridges. Overall four stars. Checkin was quick and easy. Parking is spacious. And the staff all friendly. No five because of no microwave and no site laundry facilities. If the front desk tells you to drive and be careful, if you want to wash your underwear I take that as a sign. Now excuse me, time to walk in Fremont with a mask. Too many potheads here.

Yelp
First time staying here. Quick check in and out. Super close to Fremont street but not so close you you have to listen to the loud music all night. Staff was super friendly. Especially the main restaurant and front desk people. I wanted to try the steakhouse but the regular restaurant was so good we just kept going there. Place was pretty old but well kept. Rooms were very modern and clean. Free parking as well. Only downside is the cigarette smell. Lots of smoking guests. I don't smoke but it doesn't bother me that much. If you hate smoking, don't stay here.

Yelp
Complaints were made to the front desk numerous times that the toilets is filthy and that they need to clean it. 3 days have gone by with followup requests and don't know if anything was done. Let the picture help you decide.

Yelp
UPDATED REVIEW 06/28/2023. This place is the 9th island hotel, Hawaii hotel. The vibes are always great, rooms are fair price and still in tack, the building still remains clean and took care of!! May not be as luxury as circa or new hotels on the Las Vegas strip but it's most certainly a great hotel! Variety of casino slots, tables. Food is great! The cafe there by elevators is so good! Bomb Hawaiian food. Never a problem when we go there.

Yelp
We've been to this restaurant inside of the California Hotel & Casino but without our kids. This time we brought our daughter. No kids menus, what a bumper. But we still had a great experience. Our waitress was very good. The fried Wontons were amazing. I would suggest a small menu for kids. Hotdog and burger or chicken nuggets.

Yelp
It was a little noisy at the hallway every time housekeepers were working . Room was wide . It was comfortable over all .

Yelp
If you're from Hawaii then you know this place by heart lol We visited here a few times but our most recent time was great! Mikela checked us in. Arrived around 6pm so there was no line. She greeted us upon arrival and was the sweetest! Very informative , told us the amount for everything and talked to us like we come here often lol which we do! The rooms are really nice since they upgraded everything! Bathrooms are new also and clean. The place itself is clean and the staff here are always pleasant. Parking also is a part of the fees added on so you can go in and out as you please. Will be coming here again obviously! Lol I had to take a star down because the walls in this hotel are paper fricken thin! You can hear your neighbors drunk and all and even the noise form the Fremont experience. So just FYI have earplugs with you.

Yelp
I had an excellent stay here. The rooms were recently renovated and it was quite comfortable. The dealers here are some of the friendliest I've seen and are very helpful in teaching the games for beginners. I had a vacations Hawaii package and I thought the Aloha coupons, luggage drop off and pickup were very convenient. It looks like service throughout the hotel is hit or miss but everyone I came across was kind and helpful. I can't wait to return.

Yelp
Always enjoy staying at the Cal. Room space is good and always clean. It's our home away from home. Guest services are always great! Very welcoming from arrival till it's time to say see you again! Restaurants in hotel make it very convenient, especially with their 24 hour service back. We will be back for sure!

Yelp
Love the food at California Hotel & Casino, I go to the Market Cafe, excellent food and service at the counter is great!!!

Yelp
Meh ... Every place starts with 3 stars. Facilities: +0 stars. The casino reeks of cigarettes, it's a bit dingy, and the restaurants are just OK. It's a typical Vegas mid-range property. Price: +0 stars. The price is commensurate with the quality of the facilities. Staff: -1 star. They don't give a shit and it shows in their attitude towards guests. This is a Hawaiian themed property and if that's your bag, maybe you're so giddy from the "Aloha" that you give them an extra star. I couldn't care less one way or the other about "Aloha". During my check-in process my room wasn't ready and I had to wait a bit before checking in again. No apology, just a "sucks to be you" attitude from the check-in personnel.

Yelp
I honestly don't know why there are so many bad reviews about this hotel... I found it really really decent! ( except the lobby reeks cigarette and carpet needs a little more cleaning ) but aside from that, I never encountered any bad experience. Also please wear mask inside the casino! Fremont street experience is just a minute walk, right up front. Many many restaurants to dine in to, so enjoy your stay! Have fun and stay safe!

Yelp
I just more than doubled up my chips at the $15 minimum blackjack tables. The Dealer & Pit Boss got upset and told me I colored up my chips too many times. FUCK YOU sore losers!!! I will FUCKING NEVER spend a dime at your pitiful establishment. PS Chris J is a puppet! Any casino that will mot willingly pay you your winnings is a scam!!! NEVER WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
Yes, I am a moron for still coming to the Cal with all of its short-comings.....we were there again this past weekend and although I had no complaints about any of the eating establishments, the food, or the gaming situation on the floor, I still have a few complaints about the rooms and the customer policies. Our room was the same room we stayed in a couple of months ago. At that time a few months ago, I reported numerous discrepancies with our room: Drains in the shower and tub were not draining properly; one sink's faucet was dripping and could not be completely shut off; lights burned out in the entry way; lights over the living room table burned out; and overhead lights in the bedroom were flickering. Well, they fixed the slow drains and the flickering bedroom lights, but the entryway light fixture, which is a four-bulb fixture, still had 3 our of 4 light bulbs burned out. The chandalier over the table had six lamps; three out of six of the lamps are burned out. And the bathroom faucet still is dripping -- so much that there is a green/calcium crust around the edge of the faucet neck itself. Here is my beef: The Cal says they want to be a great place for us Hawaii people to stay at. But then, why don't they address the problems reported? Our room looked a little like a room in a flea-bag flophouse. My last complaint is that they say they customer rating policies and practices have not changed in over 3 years. Then why is my rating slowly going down with each trip, despite me playing bigger stakes and longer hours? Are they lying to me? Maybe it is my own fault along with all the other loyal customers of theirs. If we keep coming back and the Cal still won't fix the problems and keeps taking benefits away from us, they I guess I understand why they keep screwing us because we are too stupid to take our business elsewhere.

Yelp
The meal coupons are supposed to be good for breakfast, lunch, and dinner marked with a palm tree on the menu at the California Hotel restaurant. But when I asked why they took a dinner coupon when I was there for lunch, the lady at the checkout register said that I ordered an item from the "dinner menu." The problem with that explanation is that what I ordered was on the "all day menu," and no one bothered to inform me of this unwritten policy. This happened several times until I realized that I was out of dinner coupons but had the full complement of lunch coupons. This struck a chord that sounded sketchy.

Yelp
We had a 5 day 4 night stay here last week as part of a club sponsored event. We were invited as non club members. Pros: * a great aloha spirit as this hotel is where the Hawaii residents stay when they fly over * small hotel casino. You're bound to see everyone from the club sooner or later * the parking garage is like a five minute walk. Ever stay at one of the huge hotel casinos on the Strip? Allow 1/2 hour. * we were on the 21st floor in what our friends said was a renovated floor. * there's a safe deposit box and a mini fridge. * Fremont Street is one block away. Easy walk to ABC Store & Walgreens. Cons: * our hotel room was 2107. Right by the elevator but the railroad is next door. You can hear the freight train rumble by day & night. Housekeeping is offered daily. If you choose to opt out, you can insert the plastic card into the door. Request one from the front desk if you need one. Like many hotel casinos it's hard to prevent the smell of nicotine. This was no different. I wore a disposable mask and could still smell cigarette smoke. Overall we has a very pleasant stay. Our room was very clean and comfortable.

Malia S.

Yelp
What a dump, do not stay here. Everything including the rooms stink of cigarette smoke. Our room was dirty, the carpet was dirty and had not been vacuumed. We were there for 6 days and only heard the maid use the vacuum twice for about 5 minutes. It was hideous and I would never recommend this hotel, it should be condemned.

Yelp
This has been around forever- at their marketplace grille- a prime rib special - and it still is really delicious- the salad replaced the salad bar, but for nostalgia- the cherry jubilee was my favorite as a kid and it warmed my heart that they still offer it with the same little wafer cookie for dessert- food was hot and no fuss and yummy - service is good, only thing is they keep the cafe at freezing temps it was so cold- rushed eating to just get out and get warm! But I guess better then sweating haha - glad this classic gem is still around - a great deal, worth the trip to downtown lv!

Yelp
Always great to visit a place you spent your whole life growing up in. This hotel definitely advanced a lot since I was little.. They renovated for sure.. The bathrooms absolutely clean! They enforce safety precautions (covid) - Mask is still required indoors. Keep in mind.. Like everywhere else.. They are short staff. Not that many people working the Bar, the gaming floors, and restaurants. A lot of stores still closed but understandable. A lot of parking and if you stay to eat then you can get validated. I absolutely miss this hotel and I can't wait to stay again away from the strip.

Yelp
This place sucks. They're like the spirit airlines of Vegas hotels. The price seems really good but they hit you with so many fees that they aren't even transparent about. Staff made it really difficult to check in, had the audacity to offer a $285 room despite the fact I already prepaid for a room. After some arguing, they finally honored the reservation I made. Then they charge me $141 up front fee, sure that's standard. But when I check out they hit me with an $88 "resort fee" . So expect to pay way more than what you pay through a third party site.

Yelp
I visited here for the first time in June 2023. After visiting Fremont Street many time, this was my first time in the California Hotel and Casino. We originally had a reservation for two nights and extended it to three. They did a little work to keep us in the same room for all nights. That was a plus for me. The room was very nice. Good size. Modern bathroom. Good housekeeping service. Note: The room was quite quiet (other than my snoring), even though it's very close to Fremont Street. The casino is quite nice. Old, obviously, but well maintained and not as loud as many casinos. They work hard to get folks from Hawaii here, and have a nice Hawaiian theme. Table games are not expensive. And they have all the modern slot machines. The steakhouse doesn't open til 4pm, and it closes at 10pm. We probably would have spent more time there if they were open! We are there one night and it was excellent. Filet done to perfection. Good veggies as well. Overall, we found this hotel and casino nice, comfy, and very friendly. Definitely not a high-end main strip hotel, but then you can go there if you want that!

Yelp
Home away from home. Lol We checked in early and I requested a room close to the elevator but none was available until much later so they offered us a room much farther away. We accepted since we had a birthday cake that needed refrigeration. I appreciate that they were able to accommodate us! The hotel and Casino was busy, which was nice to see. Some nights were busier than others and we were not able to get on the tables we wanted. That's how it goes.., Our room was good... the shutters need to be fixed but other than that it was a good stay. We will be back.
