I was in Sacramento visiting a friend and thinking thru our options for a light meal on Sunday, I remembered we had a good experience at the near by CPK a year ago. Both times the food was very tasty and the choices from the menu were surprisingly diverse. Of course this leads to wanting to order everything, and for me trying to thread the needle to get some combination thru minor substitutions. This tells me something fundamental about an establishment. I prefer to balance my Carbs with Protein / Fat, which has enabled me to control my weight more easily.
We were seated quickly and the server was right there getting us a couple of Ice Teas and handing us our menus. Instantly I noticed they took the time to have different options featured on the cover of our two menus and the quality of the menus themselves as well as the promotional signs on the table were compelling. As I said, I was looking for a lighter meal , many a soup , salad or appetizer .
They had an appetizer of "buffalo cauliflower" pictured on my friend's menu which I instantly was drawn to. As I looked at the actual description, it had an option to substitute chicken for the cauliflower and immediately, a combo of both came to mind. Even with offering to pay a full up charge, I was told it was not possible to get half and half. Well, no bother, I saw a serial Pizza which seemed to have similar sauce, chicken, with cheese. But right next to it were other Pizza offerings that were on top on Mac and Cheese instead of crust! My head exploded, what a great way to balance out the Carbs by removing the non Protein crust, which I usually leave in my plate and get a bonus of some Mac and Cheese with a much better balance of carbs protein and fat!
Asking to have the new style Pizza served on top of Mac and Cheese? No . So back to the menu I plunged. All this time, I am having a blast trying to find what I want to eat that they are willing to serve me... I worked up an appetite, by this point, and then stared at the pictures. What if they could give me the Pizza toppings in a skillet without the Mac and Cheese? SUCCESS! The result was amazing and just exactly the right amount of food I was looking for, no crust or left over Mac and Cheese.
The food was excellent, server: attentive, patient and kind to a crazy old guy who can't stick to a menu. The place is clean, inviting, quality food with an inviting, comfortable environment. You will pay a bit more than the competitors' in the same class of restaurant, but with enough patience and dialogue you can find one or more items to hit your cravings.
I am guessing the rigid adherence to the menu details come from Corporate and for that need to micro manage this location, I have to pull things back from the otherwise 5 Stars they would have gotten otherwise.
