I really enjoy dining here. I was introduced to this spot by an older friend and my wife. They had been coming here for years before any of us met (this place has been here for over 20 years). The food has always been on point, the service has always been excellent and everyone is just so nice when we visit. Consistency in these three things is such a hard thing to find these days and the folks at California Sushi deliver, spot on, everytime we have visited. Thank you all and we look forward to dining with you for years to come.

Google
I've been a loyal customer here for years because the sushi is consistently delicious. Recently, I surprised my sister for her birthday and brought along two guests to celebrate. While the manager or host (a short man with a beard and black hair) didn't seem thrilled about our group, especially since the restaurant wasn't busy, the experience was still great overall. We enjoyed the famous Bakersfield roll, Exorcista, Lemon, Crazy Rice, and dessert. The food was fantastic as always.

Google
Sushi is great! I love their hot food too. Chicken Katsu entree comes with so much food I get two meals out of it (miso soup, salad, white rice and chicken katsu on top of vegetables). Great service here too. Awesome place with a warm atmosphere and next to a nice little park if you want to take a stroll afterwards.

Google
I had the beef teriyaki bowl. The meat covered the entire top as you can see in the photo. Stir fried vegetables under the meat then the rice on the bottom. Served with miso soup as pictured.

Came for dinner on a Wednesday Night and it was slow with about 20 % of the tables taken. Nice service, very polite. We ordered edamame to start, and they give you A LOT, and it's in a deep dish plate so all the sauce is there for you to redip some edamame if want. For rolls, we got the Anaheim -- this was alright, classic roll to balance out the Taco Mexicano which was such a fun surprise! Honestly, you should go to try this roll, they NAILED the taste, my brain did not know it was eating sushi because it tasted like a taco but the best of both worlds!! We also got salmon nigiri to test out their fish and rice, and the fish was nice and fresh but their rice wasn't seasoned enough, rice was a bit hard. Overall will come back, to try a few rolls!

Google
Really love this place. Have been a loyal customer but recently, we've had a few issues with the service. This is the second time rolls came with no Wasabi or Ginger. Sushi is a dish that should always include these items.

Google
California Sushi is a great spot to grab some lunch with friends and family or even have a romantic dinner. This visit I had lunch with my buddy. We decided to go with the Bonita roll, spicy tuna, crunch, and the Indy. California Sushi does some amazing rolls with lemon slices. The Indy is one of them. When I say the flavor of this roll was an explosion in your mouth I'm not exaggerating. It was delicious 😋 Staff is super attentive and nice. All of the plates going by looked great and smelled so good. They have a great selection of rolls, hot plates, appetizers and even some beers and drinks. Outside patio is available if you want to snack and people watch. Definitely a must try when visiting Third Avenue.

I love the outdoor seating and the food is excellent. A favorite new place!

Yelp
Really sad to have to update my previous 5 star review, but I experienced first-hand what the other negative reviews mentioned, specifically the quality of food and lack of attentive service. This was my first bad experience here, which could have easily been forgiven if it was properly rectified. Mistakes happen, I understand, but it's how you handle those mistakes that make a difference. We ordered the chicken teriyaki entrée (comes with side salad & miso soup), taco mexicano roll, and philidephia roll. Took two bites of the phily roll and noticed something was off. Asked my husband to try it, thinking maybe it was just me, and he said it also tasted off. Taco mexicano roll was off as well, so I sent both back and ordered the spicy salmon hand roll and the dynamite roll instead. Restaurant was not very busy. Staff was often in the back talking to eachother while multiple tables, mine included, had empty water glasses that needed refills. I had to ask for more water because even though our server walked by multiple times he wouldn't fill our waters. My food also took an exceptionally long time to come out, long after my husband already finished his food. The most frustrating part though was that my dynamite roll was not made the same as my husband's, missing the big pieces of crab meat that he had in his, and they still charged us 50% of the Philadelphia roll because of how much was eaten. Argued with me and wouldn't take it off. I regret asking my husband to try it and should have just sent it back as soon as I noticed something was off. For something like sushi, you should not be charging a customer at all for something that could make them ill. Especially considering it took so long for the other items to come out. I can accept paying 50% of a roll that was partially eaten, but they'll have to accept a negative review. Way to tell a customer "Sorry we almost gave you food poisoning." All in all, if you come here, keep in mind its hit or miss. The miso soup, side salad, salmon hand roll, and my husband's dynamite roll were fantastic. My phily roll and taco mexicano roll were however inedible and tasted foul. Not sure if they were petty or rushed with the dynamite roll, but it was still disappointing. Moral of the story here, send your food back if it tastes off and don't question your own tastebuds or try another bite. Don't expect a 5 star experience every time or even consistent quality when you come here.

Yelp
Service was great but food was lacking flavor and did not taste fresh. We tried chicken teriyaki, salmon and sushi. I think the only decent thing I ate was the miso soup. Friendly waiter but food quality was not good.

Yelp
overall decent place. i ordered a chicken teriyaki kids meal, miso soup, and 2 pieces of salmon nigiri. if you're coming for raw sushi maybe try another place because the salmon i had was not that great. the least favorite part of my meal was the large glob of wasabi under the salmon in my nigiri. if you're going for that i would definitely say to hold the wasabi. the chicken teriyaki kids meal is the perfect size and comes with a cute little cup of grapes.

Yelp
Great sushi and pretty full for a Monday night! I don't go to Chula Vista frequently and I was there for a training and took the opportunity to meet a friend after. She invited me to her favorite sushi place and we shared 3 great rolls. I don't even know what I had as she choose for us for everything delicious and great service. I like the minimalist modern vibe of this restaurant too!

Yelp
Stopped in here for a late dinner and was pleasantly surprised. The sushi came out quick and the yakisoba was so full of flavor. Everything tasted great and the service here was even better. Although the dinner was amazing, the fried banana and ice cream dessert was divine.

Yelp
My sisters and I wanted sushi so we stumbled across California sushi bar, it was clean and everyone that was there that was so nice. We especially loved the service from Victor. Victor was kind and very helpful, we enjoyed his service and when I am in the area again. I will be returning with more people to show. 10/10 will dine again!!!

Yelp
5 stars for the Bakersfield Roll and the Exorcista Roll. They are my go-to rolls when in Chula Vista. California Sushi Bar is an old school spot on 3rd Avenue that has been here for a good while. Both times that I visited recently, it was very quiet. I think this place would benefit from a small DJ booth on the weekends and some specials. I will definitely keep returning for these two specific rolls.

Yelp
Super fresh sushi and a wonderful chicken katsu lunch special. Martin and his crew are amazing. Highly recommended

Yelp
I love this place so much!! They are super friendly and the portions are perfect. I appreciate that they have heat lamps so you can dine outside and it's a great place for dinner.

Yelp
I have ordered to-go from here a couple times and have always been very happy with my order. Everything was packaged nicely and it was all very delicious. I have dined in once and had a great experience. The Salmon Skin Salad is so freaking good, I am planning to order it everytime I go back. I liked the vibe inside, but I choose to sit outside because it was a nice day. The service was awesome and I felt totally welcomed and taken care of. P.S. The Jalapeno Poppers are totally awesome.

Yelp
Delicious Sushi! Very fresh and filling. The Los Angeles roll was incredible. They put lots of seafood in the sushi. Our service was super kind and attentive.

Yelp
I saw some 3 star reviews but this place is worth five....when I saw sushi chef put little Wasabi on the rice for Nigeria sushi...I was very surprised....this place also has good fried calamari....they are really good I think they stepping up their game...give it a try guys it's pretty good...especially rice for the sushi was really good...BTW I'm very picky for food. I'm also Korean....this is place is at least 4.5 stars. I will come back when I visit chula vista again.

Yelp
Service was horrible, we ordered food and the server ignored us the rest of the time, didn't check on us once. Not even certain he was a server but all the tables around us were being helped by other servers. A different server ended up helping us close out and get all the things we needed to go. Food sucked too, will not be coming back.

Yelp
If you come expecting an authentic Japanese experience, you might have missed the "CALIFORNIA" in the title. Regardless, we love this spot! We often walk down to 3rd with our dog and they have an accommodating outdoor patio, cold beers, hot sake, and plenty of choices for food before we walk back. There are many creative rolls, sashimi offerings, many appetizers including gyoza, and tempura. Serving sizes are great for the price and the service ranks amongst the of the best on 3rd Avenue for sit down/service meals. You will find plenty of fusion rolls with a baja flair and friendly service.

Yelp
For some unknown reason, the owner has decided to pull apart by hand all chop sticks. Cut them on the counter; with his bare hands - and reassemble them with a dirty rubber band. If you get sick after eating there; and used the chops ticks you know why. I hope the pictures I provide do not get erased; this is a health violation!

Annahli R.

Yelp
Good is great! Big fan of the INDY ROLL and EXORCISTA ROLL. Fried rice is good too. Service is okay. They sometimes forget about you and not big on substitutions. Overall not a bad place and the prices are good for the food. Recommend not getting the tea. It's is Arizona ice tea that they charge almost $4 for.

Yelp
Chef Martin created delicious sushi rolls. My favorite: Taco Mexicano, lemon roll and Bakersfield.

Yelp
Fish is fresh. They have all kinds of unique rolls. Super yummy. Perfect place for those would like to try sushi, but not too sure about raw fish. And great place who actually like raw fish

Yelp
I came here many years ago and decided to come back last month to try it again and I must say it was delicious. Staff is super friendly and respectful. My daughter took me here this Sunday for Father's Day. Loved it. My daughters first time and she liked it. We also had the calamari and salmon roll great job California Sushi Bar

Yelp
So glad to have found this gem on the westside of CV after visiting the farmer's market. Service was great- servers were very attentive and speed of service was a bit surprisingly quick, considering our order of 6 rolls plus sashimi. We loved the food- you could tell that the fish was fresh. Our favorite rolls were the Exorcista and Jalapeño rolls. Our family is always on the look out for great sushi spots in the area and this may now be on our top 3 list! Looking forward to more positive experiences at CA Sushi Bar!

Yelp
This is one of the locations open late on a Friday night. We decided to take a stroll and try this place, and give it a chance despite the not-so-good reviews and we were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was not seating at capacity and there was a 20-25 minute wait upon arrival and the place was packed inside and outside, mind you there was probably only about 15 tables (variations of small and larger tables). Upon being seated they had a big screen TV that was playing Selena and music in the background as B.I.G.'s song came... we skimmed the menu and wanted to try something new. We opted for fried gyoza, exorcista, Bakersfield and a California roll as our refreshing roll. The gyoza arrived at our table first with the sauce. Tje sauce had a lemony/citrus after taste that paired well with the gyoza. Our rolls arrived shortly thereafter. The Exorcista was baked and came seconds after the first 2 rolls. I had tried that with some teriyaki sauce added. It was packed with flavor and interesting as that was my first baked sushi roll. It was interesting to say the least, however dipping in the gyoza sauce made the flavors pop even more. The Bakersfield was wrapped in banana and was eager to try, it was surprisingly delicious. It had a banana flavor at first bite but the other flavors gave it a kick and wasn't overpowering flavor of banana but had a good kick. The service was good from start to end. While we had our waitress, others checked on us regularly and filled our waters. Also asked for teriyaki sauce with the waitress who brought our rolls out but wasn't sure if she heard me and just in case we asked another waitress, ended up getting teriyaki sauce from both, which worked out perfectly. All-in-all we are eager to go back and try other rolls and appetizers, the calamari ordered by the table next to us looked and smelled great. Definitely feel like this place deserves a try (it might not have the wow factor for sushi but it is definitely good)... as busy as they were and handling to-go orders, their timing was on point and friendly inviting staff.

Yelp
Disappointing return. Should've checked the reviews before deciding to eat here after a couple of years. Food and service is not worth your time or money. Ordered edamame, Bakersfield, Crunchy Roll and Salmon Bowl. Came in around 4:30 Received rolls about 15 mins in. 30 mins, the bowl had not arrived and the waitress was no where to be found. Asked the man up front if he could check how much longer it would be for the bowl. 20 mins after, we asked another man towards the back (assuming a manager) if we can get an update on the bowl. Turns out the waitress never put in the order and the first man we asked didn't even care to check when asked. In my restaurant going experiences, waitresses will come by, let us know they are off to lunch and if there is anything we need before they head out. At 6, the waitress walks in. The salmon and waitress never came to the table. We paid and left. Quick notes: Another waitress came by to clean a table next to ours, sprayed the table down, left it unattended, making the area smell like bleach and eating the food w the smell of bleach was not a great experience. Our waitress didn't bother coming by to check up after her lunch break. We saw 5 different tables being served around us. It was not busy especially for 4 waiters/waitresses on the floor. No, the food was not good. Normally, I am okay with mediocre service as long as the food is good. Both were a joke.

Yelp
Service was great. Food was absolutely horrible. Took one bite and thought I was gonna throw up. I ordered chicken teriyaki. And mixed tempura that should've been a no-brainer for a Japanese restaurant, but it was so disgusting. I was nauseated for hours afterward
google avatar

Yolanda G.

Yelp
Okay so my friend and I thought we'd try this place despite some bad reviews and I have to say, it was pretty delicious. The sushi was great. And the spicy garlic edamame was addicting hahaha. Prices were good- service was good I'd definitely come back here, probably not your ideal spot for big parties though.
google avatar

Dinah P.

Yelp
This was a good spot A few years back.went down hill Don't waste your money!! The worst sushi ever. Seemed like rice was days old, very hard and dry,not Edible Yakisoba noodles Was like a plate of top Raman YUCK!!! The service - Horrendous!! If I could give it 0 stars I would
google avatar

Irma H.

Yelp
Not ganna lie I wish I checked the Yelp reviews BEFORE ordering food here l, definitely was missing a lot of flavor. The calamari batter was like powder but the servers were super nice though!
google avatar

Reesa A.

Yelp
Coworkers picked up sushi for my birthday and it was so good! Exorsista was my favorite along with the crunchy roll. I need to try in person at the restaurant, it was wonderful to go, so it must be amazing to dine in!
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
He sushi here is pretty good. I am a regular so no complaints there. The only problem I had was that happy hour hours changed and the communication wasn't clear. But just so everyone knows, happy hour is Monday through Friday from 2pm-4pm. I had the exorcista roll which is my favorite roll there. It cost about $13 bucks. During happy hour, I believe it is 8 bucks. Problem is, I can't make it on a regular day during my that time. I would recommend this place. However, you're better off going for happy hour.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Honestly, I used to come here years ago and decided to come by again to eat some rolls because they were pretty yummy back then. Now, it's overpriced, underwhelming, fishy and warm. I will not be returning. Don't waste your time or your money.
google avatar

Paulina G.

Yelp
My favorite sushi bar In Chula Vista. I used to live down the street and would eat there frequently alone or with friends, and I've also ordered for pickup. No matter which I do, I can always expect great service and amazing sushi. If I go for lunch I'm doing their bento box special. Plenty of food for a happy hour price! For dinner I get the Excocista roll and salmon sashimi & eel rolls. All of their specialty rolls are really nice and creative flavors. I highly recommend this downtown Chula Vista gem.
google avatar

Tony M.

Yelp
Located in Chula Vista, 2 blocks from the Chula Vista sign. Has both indoor and outdoor seating. The menu has a very good selection. We tried a few rolls, and sushi. All our choices were very good with nice portions.
google avatar

Andrea E.

Yelp
Es uno de mis lugares favoritos, el Servicio es muy bueno, la comida es riquísima sin duda lo recomiendo mucho.
google avatar

Abraham R.

Yelp
This place was once my "go-to" spot for good sushi and food but not anymore. This was our first time ordering from Cali Sushi Bar in over two years so I'm not sure what changed exactly. The sushi lacked flavor and the fish didn't taste as good. The chicken teriyaki plate was terrible. The chicken was dry, tough and no flavor (sauce was on the side). Sadly I will not be going back.
google avatar

Chely H.

Yelp
Hell yes they are the best in Chula Vista. Will always fill you up. The staff are amazing and super knowledgeable on different taste
google avatar

Lani M.

Yelp
The service was excellent! I have nothing negative to say about the service only good things. But the food was very disappointing. I ordered about 7 different items and none of them were very good. The two stars were mainly for the service. The food was edible but not at all memorable.
google avatar

Eliel C.

Yelp
Came in here with the wife and ordered 2 rolls. The Jalapeno roll and the Bakersfield roll. The restaurant was not busy at all. After about 35 minutes, our server brought us miso soups. He said they were "on the house", but we didn't want any miso soups, and we were a bit confused. When I asked about our 2 sushi rolls, the server seemed a bit caught off guard and told us it would be another 20 minutes. So 55 minutes for 2 rolls in a place that wasn't busy. No thanks. We also brought this up to the hostess, who was very nice and went to double check on our order. She came back and just apologized, but couldn't tell us what had happened to our order. At that point we were very disappointed and decided to just get up and leave. I had ordered a beer and was willing to pay for it, but the hostess said not to, which I appreciated. That's why I gave them 2 stars instead of 1. This was a very disappointing experience. We have our usual sushi spots in CV, and decided to try this place on 3rd avenue. And it was a complete fail. Thankfully we ended up walking up 3rd and eating some great mariscos at "Mariscos Los Cuates". And Los Cuates didn't disappoint.
google avatar

Aphrodaisy L.

Yelp
5/10 for taste/quality 4/10 for menu selection 7/10 for friendliness 3/10 from professionalism -1/10 for speed/efficiency It took me 25 min for me to revive 2 rolls. Over 29 min for the waitress to come back and update me on my order. When I wanted to add a hand roll to my order I was notified it would take another 20 mins for it to come out. There were a total of 7 customers over 3 parties (I was a party of one) what in the world was holding up the sushi "chef" in the back? Was he had sorting the rice?? 100% WILL NOT RETURN

Julieta A.

Yelp
My favorite sushi place. My favorite is the taco mexicano, exorcista, and the plum wine! We have also tried the Bonita roll, the pizza roll, Chula Vista, crunchy, and Temecula roll. All have been delicious! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Larra I.

Yelp
Got the shrimp tempura sushi which was pretty delicious. I also got the chicken fried rice and what the fuck?! It was drowned in soy sauce. It was so salty and all I could taste was soy sauce
google avatar

Erik C.

Yelp
I thought the sushi was great! It was fresh, the salmon in the Philadelphia roll was smokey, prepared perfectly, and the Taco Mexicano Hand roll was also to die for. I loved it.
google avatar

Micela R.

Yelp
Sushi was just average. A little over priced for the quality. I would give it another try just for the location and convince but not a place I will crave.

Liz L.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been to California Sushi I remember the rolls tasting good and fresh. We visited today it took over 30 minutes to get our food we had already been sitting there for 45 minutes I could understand if the place was crazy busy there were only a couple other people sitting in the restaurant. I asked twice if the food was almost ready I ended up ordering another order of edamame because we were hungry. The waiter said the rolls we ordered take longer we ordered crunchy rolls and 1 dynamite Finally the food comes out it's cold I mentioned it to the waiter if it had been sitting in the back for a while he said they had just made it. By that time we were hungry my son and I start eating our rolls. My husband has flies landing on his rolls. We asked the waiter to take them off the table fly stuck on the sauce the staff asked if we wanted to replace the rolls we said no we were not going to sit there for another 35 minutes fighting off flies. We asked for the check the two rolls that had flies were still on the check. I asked them to remove them since my husband didn't end up eating. Very disappointing experience. Will not be going back.

Yelp
" Not a Very Friendly Place, And It Was Empty " We went to the California Sushi Bar on 3rd Avenue in Chula Vista the other day, and when we entered we were the only people in the restaurant . I guess we should have taken that as a bad sign ! The Hostess was not very friendly, and the waitress was slow with the food. Even though we were the only people in the restaurant. The sushi was not very good either, and there prices are fairly expensive for what you get. Now I know why this place was empty.

Jennifer Q.

Yelp
The Service was good very attentive always came back to fill up our waters with out us asking. I had the yakisoba which was delicious my partner had the Crunch roll I took a piece and it was delicious as well so I will definitely go back to try more of the sushi and give an update on that!
google avatar

Meli C.

Yelp
It's ok. I did ordered it more than once. I'm not the type to just ordered it once and make a harsh judgement on one experience. But I got it several times, and its just ok. They took out Ramen and any kind of soups off there menus. Some dishes don't have much flavor. But some are ok.
google avatar

Tanya L.

Yelp
I use to loving going here but I will never go back. It has become such a run down sushi spot. I ordered a dynamite roll and it looked disgusting and didn't taste good. I wish I would of took a picture of it but it looked like poop was placed on top of my rolls. Jalapeño roll was okay wasn't the texture I have had at other places. So disappointing since there is so much to do in downtown Chula Vista now. Won't be going back. I wish I could give it zero stars but can't post with out posting 1
