California Wet Burrito - Review - Downtown - San Jose - The Infatuation

"Don’t be put off by the generic name and San Jose State-adjacent location: California Wet Burrito is a treasure of a taqueria that also happens to be a student favorite. Get their dry or salsa-drenched California-style burritos, made with french fries instead of rice. Our favorite is the Mazatlan, made with smoky chipotle fish, served dry, but the carnitas and shredded chicken options are also big hits. If you’re with a crowd, forgo the burritos altogether and get an order of their nacho-style fries to eat on the cute outdoor patio strung with colorful papel picado streamers. The restaurant is always busy taking orders, but groups can usually find a spot to sit with no trouble, even on weekend nights." - Shoshi Parks

Google
My son found this place as they offer SJSU discount. Absolutely love the 911 burritos and the chips. This has been our weekly hangout place. Best Mexican food in USA. The service and atmosphere is also great.

Google
Ordered a veggie taco and cali wet burrito -veggie. It was so good!! The best burrito I have had. The sauces I chose were chipotle and chips salsa. Yummy!! Cute ambience. One suggestion would be maybe avoid going late night, the area is a little shady. You can always order in!

Google
Generous portions. They have clearly labeled vegetarian dishes which I appreciate. Magic veggie burrito was great.

This place is really nice. The patio has lots of plants and a cool atmosphere. Very casual. Food is great. I had the asada fries. They were awesome. Salsa selections weren't very spicy but they tasted great!

Google
Only in San Jose one night and this place did not disappoint. The Asada burrito and veggie burrito with mild salsa was amazing. Staff was super friendly. The outdoor seating area was really interesting with a tree growing through the floor. The wrapping on the burritos was also perfect according to my wife. Definitely stop in and try, you will be impressed.

Google
Loved the wet burritos here and especially the non-spicy tomatillo sauce. The portion size is huge! I saved half of mine for the next day. They have quite some options on the menu you can customize to how you want such as type of meat and which sauce you’d like. Didn’t know there are half/half sauce options but would be down to try some of the others. The chips were also made fresh when we got our order and were so addictive! Our food took about 15 minutes from order till it was brought out to us. You can do takeout options as well. The seating was outdoors and had very cute decor!

Google
The food was amazing and I really enjoyed the ambiance while I waited for my order. The lady that took my order was very sweet with a great attitude. The only reason for my 4 stars that I would have gave them 5, except I ordered no beans with my salad and when I got home, guess what I had with my salad? That’s right, beans lol. And I wasn’t about to drive all the way back. Luckily they were black beans and so I picked them out 😊

Google
Amazing experience here. The staff is friendly. I had a chance to meet the owner and his wife. You can tell their team gets their customer service skills from them. The outside seating area gives off island vibes which I love. The food was fantastic. My girlfriend is vegetarian so I always love a place that does it right. She got the super veggie burrito. I got the super burrito with their al pastor (sorry if the spelling is bad). The veggie burrito isn't just some rice and beans burrito. They sautéed veggies and added to the mix. I took a couple bites from my girlfriend's and as a meat lover I can say it is something I don't mind getting myself. This place needs more business. If you're in the area, definitely try it out!

Yelp
Local casual joint serving burritos with solely outdoor seating. I love a good "California" burrito, which has fries instead of rice and beans usually. Hard to find in the Bay, where Mission style burritos are the prevailing type. This place serves up a great one. Gotta be my new favorite cali burrito spot after the incumbent languished into mediocrity (alas). I got the San Diego burrito with Carne Asada. It's quite a hefty burrito (see attached photos) with a pleasantly toasted tortilla. Plenty of juicy carne asada on the interior, with crispy fries, cheese, sour cream, and a chipotle sauce, expertly wrapped in that toasted tortilla. Each burrito comes with a red and green salsa on the side. The green salsa is excellent. Red salsa I did not enjoy, it tastes like ketchup. Not a wet burrito fan, but I will be back for the San Diego burrito for sure.

Yelp
First time I came here I am so overwhelmed with what is going on. There is so many different choices and then to make it wet with so many other sauces also. The thing was I was craving a fish burrito so there I was, watching them make my burrito while I enviously watch how massive other people's burritos were. Taste wise, it was good I enjoyed it, still suffering size envy. So I came back the same week to have a beef burrito. holy hell that thing is huge and equally delicious. The fries, I love how they're fresh fries not soggy leftovers so the texture was just perfect. the flavors and all that sauce. I love this place.

Yelp
The restaurant itself is very tiny, but there is a patio for everyone to sit at. I got a wet burrito (without cheese & sour-cream) and I felt like it was a bit too greasy and dry but that is because of my customizations. I would like to come back next time and try their shrimp burrito with cabbage to cut the grease. The green salsa that came with my burrito was pretty good. Good thing to note that only the first salsa is complimentary, any additional will be a charge due to resources being high.

Yelp
The food pretty unbelievable, service was amazing, and prices are reasonable. The main thing i look for in a resturant is for the food to not taste old or cold.this place is aces in my book

Yelp
I had a fantastic experience at this charming spot! The patio, adorned with lush plants, creates a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. The food was top-notch--especially the asada fries, which were simply delicious. The salsa selections, while mild, were packed with flavor. I'm grateful for the delightful meal and pleasant ambiance. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Food was amazing! The service was great! The outdoor seating was beautiful! The only problem is the parking because it is located in a neighborhood. It's very close to SJSU within walking distance. I would recommend taking a Lyft m/Uber or public transport. Definitely worth it!

Yelp
So, we sent here because we could tell this place Jack something special by the reviews. Somehow that didn't translate to our order. For $18 / burrito and $3.50 / sauce, I expected an amazing experience. While I saw "wet" burritos on the menu to order, I didn't order those, I ordered two of the regular burritos, so I had assumed when I ordered "extra" salsa, it would be on the side. That wasn't the case. Our non-wet burritos were completely covered in the salsa, which for non-spicy sauces is fine, but I ordered a spicy one for my burrito. My whole meal was ruined. My burrito was covered complete in this spicy sauce I had assumed would be on the side AND the cheese and sour cream the burrito said it came with was on the top, not mixed inside. I recommend they update their descriptions to clarify that cheese and sour cream are on top and that any extra sauce ordered will also be on top. Not having the cheese and sour cream inside the burrito made the taste of the inside just OK, and since I could only eat the inside because I hadn't been prepared with saturating it in spicy sauce, I couldn't eat any other part of the burrito.

Yelp
The food is horrible. I order a steak crunchy taco (everything) and a super steak taco (soft) to begin with , their "crunchy tacos" aren't the proper crunchy shells and are so small. Secondly, they didn't put refried beans as said on the menu and the worst part is, they put a piece of cheese, a slice of cheese on my "crunchy taco" also most of the meat was just fatty, 30% meat 70% fat. I do like the green sauce though .

Yelp
This used to be our favorite place to get burritos until today. We ordered two burritos, which cost us $36. We politely requested for an extra side of 911 sauce in the comments, as there was no option to choose to pay for a side of it on the doordash menu, only for a 4 oz size, which costs over $6, and we didn't need that much sauce. We only wanted an extra small side, which already comes with the burrito, and measures out to exactly 1 Tablespoon of sauce. The restaurant staff wrote on our receipt, "Pay for extra sauce next time." Seriously? Over a Tablespoon of sauce? It's absolutely ridiculous. Especially when a burrito costs $17. We never minded paying the high price for the food because it's delicious, and great quality, but this whole comment about a tablespoon of sauce is just rude. If they want their customers to pay for a tiny container of sauce, they should add that to the menu instead of writing a comment on the customer's receipt. Also, I paid for extra avocado and barely got any. The meat inside the burrito is extremely dry. If I hadn't ordered a wet burrito it would be totally tasteless and disgusting. I am extremely disappointed, and in looking at the reviews, I am not the only person to complain about the sauce situation, or the dryness and blandness of the inside of the burrito. Definitely not worth $19.

Yelp
I love this place. It's so good and has a nice outdoor dining vibe too I especially love to get the wet California burrito with orange sauce

Yelp
Came here on a weeknight and there was no wait to get a table. There's no parking lot, but there is street parking around the restaurant. We ordered 2 wet burritos and it came out pretty fast (~10min after ordering), and the service was very nice when we came by. I ordered a wet burrito with chipotle salsa, I thought the chipotle flavor was great and it wasn't spicy (spice level was 2 on the menu). I got a special burrito with avocado and al pastor and my boyfriend got the wet regular burrito with carne asada. I think the special comes with more fillings, but you end up getting a little less meat-- at least that's how it was with the special and regular burritos we got. The flavor of the meat and the way it was cooked was great. Plus these burritos are huge, I ate half and took the rest home. My boyfriend used to come here a lot before covid and said prices used to be $13 for a wet burrito and now they're about $17, which is a pretty big price increase.

Yelp
Finally checked this one off my list! It's a cute place. I love the outdoor seating area. The vibe is very chill almost island-like. No indoor seating available. Staff is super friendly! I ordered the rice, beans, and cheese burrito with enchilada sauce and asked them to top it with more cheese. The burrito was huge! I thought for sure I was going to take half of it home, but I killed it in one sitting! The burrito itself was very packed, and the filling was really good and perfectly seasoned. The enchilada sauce was also spot on. Adding the extra cheese on top made the tortilla a little tough though from microwaving. Still was very enjoyable to eat (obviously, I finished the whole thing). Definitely coming back to try other stuff!

Yelp
Huge burritos Wet fish burrito was excellent. Like the orange salsa. Lots of flavor from every ingredient

Yelp
My husband got the El Texano with shredded chicken and it was amazing! Flavors were good and tasted perfect! I got the veggie burrito and it was nice too. Highly recommend going here.

Yelp
Our go to spot near work for a great wwt burrito. Friendly service and always good food. Thank you for always supporting first responders!
google avatar

Yelp
The 5 stars is for the rice inside the shrimp burrito. The rice is the main attraction in that burrito, in the same way that the orange sauce is the main attraction in the La Victoria burritos, or in the way that the asada is the main attraction in the Super Tacqueria burrito. The nearest equivalent to the rice might be st the Poor House Bistro or maybe from Chachos, but Chachos has not yet come back to downtown San Jose. Their shrimp was the hard shrimp and not the soft shrimp, but the hard shrimp worked better with their rice.

Yelp
Everything! The food is the bomb.com EVERY time. And they are one of the few places that do multiple things right and not have one specialty. Tacos are good, burritos are amazing and their fries? Do not even get me started. Perfection all around and I love giving them my money time and time again!
google avatar

Sarika S.

Yelp
Yummmmmayyy food! I placed an order via food delivery, so I didn't get to experience going into this place, but the food speaks for itself. I got the following: Chicken little burrito- there is nothing little about this. The burrito had yummy fries in it, but was a bit dry. Luckily they gave sauce on the side, but I think something a little more inside would make it better. Chicken enchiladadas- super flavorful. Order came with 3 enchiladas with shredded chicken. They did not skimp on the chicken at all. The rice & beans were yummy too. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
Been going there since college. Great Cali Burrito! Nice outdoor patio too :) always delicious

Yelp
Charming local restaurant with friendly service and amazing burritos. Nice outdoor seating area with cute decor.

Yelp
Staff is always rude over the phone. Asked for recommendations and they blew me off. Placed order over phone multiple times. And I just remember why I never go. Food is expensive and charge way too much for salsas despite already being pricey. Don't waste your time just go to Cali Spartan better food and cheaper.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place! The staff are always so friendly and accommodating. I came here with a friend and we ordered California style wet burritos. I got the shrimp burrito with 2 of the sauces. Their burritos are never skimpy on protein and I am always please with the ratio of protein to carbs/veggies. I like the outdoor eating area. I came on a windy day and the staff were very accommodating and put the heater on for us (so nice because it wasn't super cold out) since we didn't have jackets on. I highly recommend this place and try out the different sauces on the wet burrito! I always do 1/2 and 1/2 so I can try different sauces. I believe this is the diablo sauce and 911.

Yelp
Was hungry and this was only the place that looked good around my buddy's place. She kept raving about it so I caved in. I called in an order about 20 minutes before closing. They accommodated and had my order ready in 10 minutes. Food looked delicious when I first opened it. Took my first bite and was disappointed. The meat lacked seasoning. The food overall just tasted like the enchilada sauce it was drenched in. Even the fries inside the burrito weren't seasoned. I was hoping it would be more flavorful but it was not what I expected. For a burrito that cost almost $16 this was definitely NOT WORTH IT. Sorry, not a fan. I appreciated the quick and friendly service but the food here is lacking.

Yelp
I was so excited to try out this spot with co-workers. Upon entrance, we were greeted by Jane (I may have gotten her name wrong) who was super friendly. I let her know it was my first time and I had questions regarding their sauces. She allowed me to sample the sauces by providing me with a tortilla chip. Their sauce method is simple. There are 3 levels; mild, medium, and hot for both red and green sauces. I'm not a spicy kind of gal so I was very pleased with my mild sauces. I opted for the shredded chicken burrito and both sauces. The burrito was super fulfilling and delicious. I took a third of it back home for the hubby who enjoyed it as well. My co-workers ordered the medium and hot sauces and were impressed. All in all, I enjoyed the customer service and food. Next time I'm craving a wet burrito, I will defiantly be back!

Yelp
My husband brought home half a wet burrito with chipotle sauce. It was so good that I didn't care that inside was just fries, carne asada, rice, and beans. Every day after that, I could not stop thinking about that burrito. The delicious, creamy, slightly spicy chipotle sauce and flavorful, slightly charred carne asada pieces--chef's kiss. The fateful day finally came when I was able to stop by. I made note to NOT order hubby's same burrito (no fries, but cilantro and pico/onions are a must). How unfortunate my first visit was! Ordered carne asada fries, meat plate, wet super burrito and wet chimichanga. Both wet burritos with 911 and chipotle. Only one had both sauces. Chimichanga was not fried. Both were missing onions, cilantro, and salsa. It was just rice, refried beans, and meat. Can someone clarify; Is it like that when it's made wet? I couldn't ask or complain because we ordered to-go. The sauces were delicious, but our orders were not only wrong but also missing key ingredients that burritos are supposed to have. Whether wet or regular, I like onions, cilantro, and salsa inside my burrito. Plus, the ingredients are listed on the menu!! Hence, why I ordered it! It was infuriating. Service was great, but these major blunders were unforgivable.

Zono K.

Yelp
Used to go here twice a week when i went to college at SJSU, now i'm living in new york city comparing most mexican foods to this place. Used to get the wet burrito with red sauce as my go to, and brought out of town friends here that were blown away

Yelp
Ugh, soooooooooo disappointed. I moved away from San José before the pandemic and am up here for a visit. Decided to swing by for a bite. It was sad and so disappointing. First off, like most things these days the prices went up by nearly 30%. A burrito will now run you $13++ (taxes+tip). Second they now give you one skimpy drop of the hot sauce per order (vs the sauce comes with the meal), you have to pay for any extra. $2.25 for what looks like a 2-3 Oz container. Man, I don't know, being charged for the hot sauce seems not the standard, especially when I just paid $13++ for the burrito. To top it off, it just wasn't as good as it used to be. The meat was super dry and it was super bland - it desperately needed the hot sauce to add flavor. The only silver lining is the fact that we moved away, I will no longer crave this place. Grateful for it being good when I lived here though.

Yelp
This place never fails to deliver the best salsa's and burritos in the bay. They're always amazing people, too, seriously unbelievable food and the size of the burritos are unbelievable. Especially in college, these burritos are perfect for almost two meals.
google avatar

Janis W.

Yelp
Love the food here, good portions, the burritos are good, both regular and California burritos, nachos are delicious, we usually order chicken nachos, but have also had al pastor as well as carnitas in both nachos and burritos! The staff also make a place you want to return to. They are great! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Tram N.

Yelp
Thank you, DoorDash - twice! Sometimes laziness get the better of me but I don't really think much of it anymore because I don't mind ordering out and having it delivered. My automatic tip is 25% since this pandemic started and I still hold true to that even w/ a third party delivery service. I'm thankful to be able to work from home; not much has changed financially for me. I feel like it's my duty to support and show my kids that if you can help, you ought to. One one Sunday we both ordered burritos. His is always a regular chicken burrito w/o pico (though he can eat tomatoes and onions) but he can't do chili or jalapenos yet). I ordered the Cali Chicen Little Wet Burrito w/ their Original 911 Sauce.. it was massive (generous portion), filling, and so delicious! The sauce had some heat which I thoroughly enjoyed. The following Sunday we ordered again.. Gavin ordered the same while I ordered their chicken enchiladas this time w/ their chipotle sauce. I loved how spicy it was! I even poured the entire green salsa on top of my enchiladas.. it was sinfully delicious but don't order it unless you enjoy your food spicy. The refried beans was salty but it paired well w/ the rice. Def would order again, maybe this Sunday!

Yelp
Lemme just say everything I've tried here is hella good! I've had their burritos, carne asada fries, veggie fries, hard tacos, veggie burritos, veggie tacos, fish tacos, and their fish tacos. Everything is so flavorful. The veggie tacos are sooooo good. They know they're doing! I am from San Diego & this is the closest I can get to the food back home. The ambiance is nice. The decor is beautiful. The staff is super nice!

Akshay K.

Yelp
Dropped about 500 on san diego burritos w/ grilled chicken so yk its fire. All the employees super nice fr.

Jaimin P.

Yelp
Awesome food , and quick service but seating for large group might not be available as this is very small place but one of the best vegetarian burrito i have ever had in bay area.
google avatar

Jing G.

Yelp
Love the fish taco and fish burrito, the fish is nicely seasoned. The wet burrito is also good, but sometimes the sauce is very spicy.
google avatar

Renee C.

Yelp
Don't let the name fool you. This place is delicioso! Or maybe you live a good wet burrito ‍ Close to San Jose state and 280 free way with lots of burritos and taco options. Plus when I was craving tostadas, I found they make crispy taco( mini flat tostada). Plus they cook all the meats and even have veggie options for this vegan. Lots of yummy salsa options. Workers so kind and helpful every time we stop.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing home made sauces . Great people Awesome value Their Chipotle sauce is one of the best I have ever had

Yelp
This review is for delivery only. I really wanted a burrito tonight and didn't want to go out. The last time I ordered from La Victoria was a disaster, so I took to Yelp. I am so glad to have found this place. First of all, ordering was easy and the dishes came with a list of ingredients. For the burrito I chose, you could request items not be included without having to write a separate request (kudos on that, from someone with food allergies). Delivery was 10 minutes early, which I appreciated. The packaging: I was handed a standard plastic food bag, tied at the top. Didn't have great hopes, but hey, it's delivery. When I opened the bag, my soda was separated from the food and was icy cold, and my burrito and chips and salsa were carefully and neatly packed in a large clamshell container. The chips were in a separate paper sack in the container and none of them were broken. The salsa was tightly sealed so it hadn't spilled. The burrito was neatly wrapped in foil and still very hot. The chips were pretty good, I liked that the salsa didn't take my head off, though it's a bit thin. The burrito-- I'm in love. The first bite had chicken in it. Has that ever happened before with a burrito? And rice had a rich flavor, the beans were not the predominant ingredient, and there was just enough cheese. The chicken was the bomb! I ordered the grilled chicken, which was juicy and tender. Whatever they seasoned it with was perfect. There was a great ratio of meat to the other ingredients, and every bite had chicken it. The last bite was still hot. I was going to only eat half and save the rest for lunch tomorrow. I ate the whole thing and don't regret it. Definitely going to try this place in person and order from them again.
google avatar

Hayley G.

Yelp
Their wet burrito with the chipotle sauce is so good, it's my favorite. The avocado slices on top of their wet burritos is also SO GOOD! This is my go/to for wet burritos in San Jose
google avatar

Glen N.

Yelp
Good selection of fat burritos with a large, covered, cool patio to eat them. Though my wet burrito had more than enough green sauce, they charge for extra salsa. They have their own secret recipe salsas. The spicy green one is 911. Never forget.

Julianna H.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I have been coming here for over a year now and every time I eat here I am AMAZED. The carne asada street tacos are my go to. I look forward to them after a long week and I'm always beyond satisfied. Luna, who works in the front is such a kind and welcoming person. She is always so sweet to my friends and I and continuously treats us with great hospitality. It's super close to campus and is an absolute hidden gem for anyone who wants some delicious food and a break from the commons. I will eat here till the day I graduate and then commute to eat here thereafter. I literally signed into yelp just to make this review.

Yelp
AMAZING sit down in an ugly part of downtown SJ. If you're looking for good food and good vibes, this is a must. I'm sorry if I get her name wrong, I believe it was Serena, but the cashier, waitress, hostess, was outstanding. We were graciously welcomed, up-selling was appropriate, even though we came in late night. Drinks were nothing special, but made with love, (I'm not talking extra shots, they tasted GOOD as they were) and the SALSAS will be back literally tomorrow because I want to dine here every day. Atmosphere is gorgeous, with trees growing out of the surrounding patio love love LOVE.
google avatar

Gargi K.

Yelp
Order the Veggie Burrito and the Veggie Burrito Bowl using Clubfeast and it was amazing! The portions were super big and the food was absolutely delicious. I love how the burrito was a mixture of all the right ingredients and the sauces really added the extra spicy kick of flavor. I really liked the Burrito Bowl, but it needed a lot more nachos to add some crunch into the dish. Overall, I had a great experience with this place and can't wait to order from here again!
google avatar

Sunnee L.

Yelp
I got the holy cow asada fries & it was great! I would definitely come again however I would order the fries extra crispy so they don't get soggy. I wish there was guac to add additional flavor. The green salsa was very spicy so keep that in mind. The red sauce is more mild. My boyfriend got 3 tacos (2 asada & 1 Al pastor) and he liked the asada but the al pastor lacked flavor. In total the price was about $35, which is the only reason why I gave a 4 star. Prices went up a little too high, however the customer service & restaurant itself is a nice place to eat at.
google avatar

Briana P.

Yelp
my first time ordering the Cali Mazatlan and it was horrible. The ingredients do not include fries and yet my burrito had toooo many French fries and NO SHRIMP. NOT ACCEPTABLE. Will never order from here again. This burrito is disgusting. Fries instead of shrimp no Bueno!
google avatar

Fernando D.

Yelp
I got a holy cow california burrito, it's supposed to come with, pico de gallo, with extra charge of course and sour cream, cheese, beans and salsa, well I just got home and none of that was inside my burrito, I paid about $17.00 for the burrito, and it is not what I ordered, I am Super disappointed, I will defenitely tell you do not come to this place.
google avatar

Diego R.

Yelp
I went back for a 2nd time since I had a positive experience the first time. But this visit I ordered the Holy Cow burrito, it was just as delicious as the San Diego burrito!

Yelp
Last night I hadn't a clue what I wanted to eat. I went to Yelp for the help! Haha, and I discovered; quite close to where I live, this nice restaurant. I placed the order to go so I could scurry back home to Netflix, and chill...with my food. The staff were very nice and friendly. The food is delicious, price is great also. Thank you Yelp for showing me up this new gem

Yelp
My friend and I were visiting the San Jose area and we were looking for a quick bite to eat that was near the AIRBNB we were staying at. Lo and behold, California Wet Burrito was the first to pop up on my yelp list. We were within walking distance and since the restaurant is also very close to SJSU, we saw quite a few university students there. The line was super short. There is indoor and outdoor seating, more outdoor than indoor. Fair warning though: they don't give out water, you'd have to buy a bottle of water. Since we didn't know that beforehand, we got two beers instead. And, if you do buy a drink with a bottlecap, there's a handy little bottlecap opener attached to the front desk where you make your order. I got a grilled chicken burrito and I was delightfully surprised that they also put fries in it. The burrito itself was pretty darn good. It was stuffed with ingredients with the right amount of sauce so no part of the burrito was overly dry.

Yelp
My favorite burrito place in the area!!! CA wet burrito never disappoints. The wet burrito is big and full of flavor. All of the flavors come together, complimenting each other, leaving your mouth chewing a symphony of delicious flavors. I also love getting the chips and salsa. The chips are made to order, so they're always fresh, crispy, and hot. They only have 3 choices for salsa: a red chipotle salsa that's garlicky (in all the right ways), a spicy green sauce (the 911 sauce), and the mild green sauce- All are so tasty! May not have orange sauce that many like to douse their burritos in, but the burritos are so flavorful, you don't need that. The inside area is small with only two tables, but outside has a lot more tables and cute lights hanging around. If you're looking for something filling and delicious, you HAVE to try a California burrito from here. Amazing.
