Calilo Review: This Underrated Greek Island Has a Stunning Beachfront Resort — With a Secluded Beach, Private Plunge Pools, and a 3-story Spa

"Calilo is a five-star resort located on the island of Ios, Greece, known for its whimsical design and environmental sustainability. Opened in 2019, it is part of the Michalopoulos family’s boutique collection. The resort offers 36 suites with features like personal plunge pools, outdoor natural rock showers, and Greek marble interiors. The property includes a wellness center with open-air treatment rooms and over-water treatment beds. Dining at Calilo includes a field-to-fork ethos with offerings like a nine-course tasting menu at the fine dining restaurant, CHES. The resort also provides activities such as yoga, exercise classes, and private boat excursions to explore Ios's untouched beaches. Calilo emphasizes environmental protection with projects like the Elektra Olive Tree project, which replants ancient olive trees across Ios." - Alessandra Amodio Alessandra Amodio Alessandra Amodio is a fine art photographer, writer, traveler, and dirty martini enthusiast who lives in New York City. Where to Eat, Stay, and Play on Ios, the Most Underrated Greek Island

"That changed when Calilo opened on Papas Beach in 2019, leading the way for mindful luxury developments on the island. As you drive up to the secluded and fantastical world of Calilo (it’s about an hour away from the port and Chora), a riot of color bursts through the rocky scenery."

We stayed at Calilo for 3 unforgettable nights in 2023 to celebrate our anniversary, and I can honestly say I’ve never experienced anything like it. We booked the Rebel Soul suite, which came with a massive outdoor space, five private pools (including a heart-shaped one!), and a stunning ocean view. It felt like we were in our own little world.||From the moment the hotel picked us up and greeted us with welcome drinks and warm hospitality, everything felt surreal—like we had stepped into a scene from White Lotus. The entire resort is breathtaking, secluded, and peaceful. It’s not crowded at all—likely due to the exclusive price point—and while the resort itself has a huge footprint, there aren’t too many rooms, so privacy is a big highlight.||The private beach was beautiful and serene, but honestly, we spent most of our time enjoying our own pools. The hotel also offers a lot of extras like a main pool, multiple restaurants, complimentary yoga classes, and more. Every detail was thoughtfully designed to make guests feel pampered and relaxed. One night, the staff even changed the room’s ambiance and prepped it for bedtime—such a unique and thoughtful touch.||The level of service here was next-level. The staff were genuinely kind and attentive—not something we felt in many of the more tourist-heavy parts of Greece. Calilo felt like a private island experience, and it completely changed the way I see luxury travel in Greece.||Yes, it’s expensive. But it was 100% worth it. This place was the highlight of our Greek vacation—everything else felt overrated in comparison. If you’re looking for true luxury, privacy, and a once-in-a-lifetime escape, Calilo is it. I would absolutely return!

Our experience at this resort was absolutely outstanding from the moment we arrived until our departure. The staff were not only incredibly professional but also genuinely warm and welcoming. Every interaction was met with a smile, and the level of service exceeded all expectations. A massive shout out to the manager Theodore who was constantly there and checked in regularly to make sure our stay was exceptional. It's clear that the whole team took great pride in what they do, and it showed. Our private pools, the main pool as well as the beach was beautiful, but my favourite had to be the onsite church, it was definitely done with such specific detail to attention. Highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a combination of luxury, comfort, and exceptional hospitality. I celebrated my birthday here and have to say it's been my best birthday yet!

What truly sets Calilo apart is its atmosphere. It’s not just a hotel – it’s an experience. Whether you’re relaxing in one of the many pools, wandering through the art-filled gardens, or enjoying a peaceful meal overlooking the sea, there’s a sense of tranquility and inspiration everywhere you go.

My now fiancé booked Calilo for us and planned our engagement to be within the hotel grounds. I can wholeheartedly say I have never experienced a hotel like it. ||From the minute we arrived off the ferry from Santorini we were greeted by hotel staff to drove us to the hotel (45 min drive). The views to the hotel are breathtaking. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by Calilo's hosts who explained about the hotel, gave us a complimentary drink and some nibbles whilst we waited for our baggage to be taken to our rooms. Our host explained the meaning behind the artwork (all being hand crafted by the owner) and things we could do throughout our time at the hotel. ||We stayed in the Oasis suite, which overlooks the main pool area, and included our own 3 private pools. The beach is less than a minutes walk. Whenever we ordered room service the drinks were delivered through an outside door near the pool area, so staff didn't enter the room, and didn't walk past the main entrance which overlooks the pool. Everything felt very personal and private. ||The beach is immaculately well kept and the sea is your typical gorgeous crystal blue Greek sea. Thanks to our suite booking, we didn't have to make a reservation at the beach and we had our own cabana. However, although most rooms were booked when we were there, we didn't find it overwhelmingly busy and there were only 4 other parties on the beach with us - all with sufficient distance between us. ||Staff can't do enough to help you. In fact, when we went from the bar to the games room, staff would run over before we'd gotten up to follow us with our drinks. ||Prior to our proposal (which was a private fine dining meal situated above the spa, overlooking the mountains with an infinity pool infant of us), my fiancé gave staff the ring box, in his words "so that I wouldn't see it in his pocket". Upon return after the proposal every staff member we walked past congratulated us, everyone stopped to look at the ring, and we were provided with drinks at the bar. ||The cocktail connoisseur at the bar (I forgot his name) created handcrafted cocktails for us that weren't on the menu and explained the reasonings behind his menu. They are all inspired by people and places he's been to, and each drink compliments a cigar or a food choice. His partner, who works at Calilo, is also lovely. ||We had an amazing time and plan to come back next year. Thank you for making this trip so special for us!

All impressive, beautiful facility, great food and good breakfast. Not too windy like we experienced in Mykonos, nice and relaxing beach. All good!
