Google
We were passing through Mobile looking for a place where we could bring our dog. Callaghan's has outdoor seating and they welcome dogs. My wife and I had burgers which they are known for and the burgers were very good. The neighborhood is beautiful and we enjoyed a walk around after our meal. The bar inside is very cool. This place is definitely worth the trip and I highly recommend it.

Google
Everything we read about the place was true! Fabulous funky vibe, excellent menu, top notch wait staff. It's all true. Check them out!

Passing through town for work, friend took us here and everything was good. Pasta salad and patty melt were delicious

Google
Heard the cheeseburgers were great, so we tried it out. Bacon cheeseburgers were pretty good, nothing exciting but good. Small tavern menu, super fun atmosphere! Would probably be fun on a Friday evening with live music.

What an amazing place with so much of Mobiles Irish love! Fun place that has a lot of live music and fun filled events all year around. We had the burgers and Po’boys (blackened) with the artichoke and spinach dip to start (absolutely KILLER). They have indoor and outdoor seating with road side parking. Definitely a place you want to try if you are looking for some good mobile food.

Tale Of A Wonderer

Google
My mom and I visited Callaghan's on vacation while in Mobile. We had the Patty Melt and Chicken Philly, both sandwiches were amazing! The Bread Pudding is to die for as well, omg that caramel whiskey sauce... chef's kiss! The ambiance is also very neat, as you can tell this place has some history to speak of. Our waitress be it not overtly friendly was attentive, nice and made sure we were served swiftly and had everything we needed. I did purchase a T-shirt as well, as I love interesting places of interest. I recommend checking it out if you're in the area! 5/5

We went for lunch on Tuesday, it was pretty crowded and took little longer to place a order. We had a Cuban sandwiches and cheese burger, those were good as expected 😉

Google
Just absolutely WOW! Tonight was our first time and definitely will not be our last! This place was awesome and the atmosphere was pretty chill and fun to observe! A man was singing live, and the staff was very friendly! The food was worth the wait, which was rather quicker than expected being it was pretty packed on a Friday at 630pm. The burgers was juicy, thick and the most delicious burgers by far, compared to any other burger I've ever tasted! This place it in a neighborhood, but it was easy to located and definitely worth giving it a shot, you definitely Will Not regret checking it out! Loved it and will be back again!!!

Yelp
A staple of Mobile. Can't beat it. Try the patty melt. Live music is always good. Service was great!

Stephanie B.

Yelp
We were told the hamburgers were excellent, and they did not disappoint. I ordered mine, medium, rare, and it was so juicy and delicious. This is a typical Irish pub, nothing fancy, but a lot of fun.

Cheryl W.

Yelp
Came here after visiting the Oakleigh house. It was a great low key neighborhood bar. Good selection of beer. I had the Philly cheesesteak with the pasta salad on the side. The food was very good. All the staff were very nice. I need to come back to try the shrimp po boy.

Patti C.

Yelp
With a great blues band and good service this bar is full of locals. The burger was tender yet no sausage in it tonight that is only certain days of week. The bread pudding is amazing with a sweet bourbon sauce. Cover tonight as the band was here but great music and beers go hand in hand

Michael P.

Yelp
I always make a habit of stopping by Callaghan's Irish Social Club when I am visiting Mobile. They have a great selection of Irish beers and great hamburgers too! Situated in an old house in the middle of a Mobile neighborhood just outside of downtown, this place has epic Irish social club ambiance.

Yelp
They often say the places you aren't sure about have some of the best food, definitely the case at Callaghans. It's a neighborhood bar in a quiet side of town, doesn't look like much from the outside. We were lucky enough to get inside before a show was about to kick off which wouldn't have allowed us in due to it being a paid performance. Nonetheless, we were seated upstairs by a young gentleman. They don't have menus, they have a piece of paper slapped on a standing frame. It's a simple concept and known that you need to order a burger going there. They were at one point touted by USA Today for being Alabama's Best burger and they weren't lying. This was probably one of my favorite things I had down in Mobile. Good size burger, incredibly juicy and cooked perfectly. It was everything you want and more served with a side of chips. Quite possibly one of the best burgers I've ever had, I hope my words are getting across to how good of a burger this was. I can only hope those reading my reviews can get a chance to check out this gem if and when in Mobile one day!

Brittany B.

Yelp
Great local spot in Mobile, Alabama. They have great southern hospitality with delicious eats. Our waitress was very nice and the food came out extremely fast which was great because we were very hungry! We ordered 1 grilled and 1 blackened shrimp po-boy to try them both and they were very similar so I'd recommend just ordering the blackened which had a bit more spice and kick to it. I'm not a sausage fan but my family absolutely loved the sausage burger and our waitress recommended that as a local favorite. We ended our meal with the bread pudding which had a warm whiskey caramel sauce on top and that was phenomenal! Highly recommended stop if your in the Mobile area.

Yelp
Callaghan's was recommended because I said to a couple that Briquettes has the best burger. I spoke with the bartender Cheryl who has been there for "it seems" since the 90s, she was friendly, attentive and ran the bar and floor all by her lonesome. You can tell she is a seasoned server/bartender as she moves with ease, purpose all whilst building rapport. The burger was juicy, done to the temp requested, kept you coming back for more after each bite as the thick sliced bacon and fresh veggies blended with every chew. Constructively criticizing this gem would be to let the patty rest 60-90 seconds because the juices made the bottom half of the bun soggy on one side, which is what I ate first, . This was a solid burger, it dripped so much it was I used a few napkins under it to keep the juices under control, I highly recommend. They have crisps (Welsh for potato chips), instead of fries, living up to their theme. A cornucopia of photos are strewn over the walls with phrases thrown in here and there. You definitely feel the Irish vibe. Parking is on the street and with it's popularity, weekends will require a 2-3 block trek to this iconic bar.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Once again, I ordered the BLT with chips and an ice cold Coors Banquet beer. The service is always very fast and again, Callaghan's delivers with the best BLT in town. I believe it's impossible to have anything else but the best in food and beverages. Enjoy the picture while I dig into this sandwich. Thanks to the staff for another great experience!

Yelp
This is an awesome neighborhood, classic, Irish pub. Smooth Harp and Guinness on draft. Great burgers. I love mayo, but if you don't, you might want to ask for it on the side b/c it was generous. Nice bartender and a chill, relaxing vibe. We went on a Tuesday night so we didn't get to experience any music. Outside seating and a calm atmosphere that would be fine for families before 6:00 pm or so.

Randy B.

Yelp
One of the best neighborhood pubs in town. Great music, good food and good service. It's one of those places where you're not a stranger even if it's your first visit.

John S.

Yelp
So I took a customer for lunch and the older redheaded lady just had the worst attitude. we had to change something it was like we killed her dog. I've been here multiple times never been treated like this, everyone of them said the same thing that it was just the worst attitude, even the bus boy bringing food he had just as bad of an attitude, I get it some people have a bad day and that's what I figured and I wasn't gonna write this review until, it was time to give me the bill. Nothing is smiles and let me refill that for you. But the food was spot on. The service just sucked today.

Mike G.

Yelp
Went there to pick up food , they said an hour. Ended up waiting an extra hour, then asked for ranch and marinara sauce. Witch the responded it was extra and would be a while. Great food bad service

Darryl P.

Yelp
I'm staying in the area for a short while so I had to try the local place. I had a cheeseburger and potato salad outside and a couple of pints of Guinness. Out of curiosity I went inside to check out the vibe and saw a cool 77 year old place that had a good vibe and great service. Food was great and they even had live music while I was watching soccer on the Telly and enjoying a Harp on tap.

Yelp
Callahan's was recommended to me by my Airbnb host. My Airbnb was less than a mile away so around 9pm on a Friday night, my buddy and I found ourselves at Callahan's. We went to Daulphin Street first. There were several people walking up and down the street, limited parking, and because Mobile just re-opened from COVID-19, there were only a few restaurants open. I write those facts in this review to compare Callahan's. Callahan's is a few blocks south of Government in a residential area. Parking was not difficult and the only people around seemed to be locals. It was so easy to walk in and sit down. This felt like an Irish pub with all the memorabilia on the walls. There are lots of choices for alcohol. I do not drink so I can't help you there. But I can help you with the food. The menu is very limited. There are only 3 appetizers. My buddy and I went with the Spinach dip with garlic bread. It was all right. The menu includes sandwiches and a burger with potato salad, slaw, or chips. My Airbnb host said it was the best burger in Mobile. I had to order the burger with such a glowing recommendation. The burger had a fresh made patty with a kaiser bun. You get to choose your type of cheese. The burger comes with mayo, mustard, ketchup, and LTO (lettuce, tomato, and onion). I recommend the burger but I wouldn't say it is the best in Mobile. Though I have not eaten a lot of burgers in Mobile, I like a little more diversity in my burgers to consider it the best. I had potato salad with my burger. It was made from red potatoes, dill, and some kind of mayo-light mustard conglomeration. If you are looking for an Irish pub to hang out and socialize with some of the locals away from the crowds of downtown Mobile, give Callahan's a try.

Michael S.

Yelp
Showed up late was served anyway. Had beer and pizza. Very nice! Very friendly atmosphere. Next time I'll explore the menu a bit more!

John M.

Yelp
A client strongly recommended that I stop by here for lunch and was adamant about me trying their burger. Well, I am always seeking a great place to eat, so off on a culinary adventure. My GPS took me down some side streets and lo and behold, an Irish flag (somewhat frayed) signaled that I had arrived. The building was rather decrepit and the atmosphere was splendidly ramshackle, there was nothing fancy about the place. In fact, it was the very antithesis of upscale. The atmosphere embraced squalor and rejoiced in its rough around the edges, dive bar atmosphere. I opted for the cheeseburger with pepperjack cheese and for my side I selected the pasta salad. The establishment does not offer French fries, nor do I believe that I seen anything on the menu that was fried. The pasta salad was nothing special. The burger was big, cooked a perfect medium rare, and was a celebration of countless men and women who worked before a hot flat top or grill who fed generations the culinary wonder of the greasy spoon burger. I would recommend a visit to this establishment. Come by, grab a libation and some food and experience this for yourself.

Yelp
After making my rounds, I've settled on my favorite burger in Mobile! While there are great contenders, the current title goes to Callaghan's hands down! The burgers are juicy and firing on all cylinders! I like ordering mine "Trevin style" as his way works! Medium cook, with bacon, all the fixings, and pepper jack cheese!Trevin has been our server twice now, and both times he's been the "host with the most" and took great care of us. We've also enjoyed the bands on our visits. Callaghan's is the "neighborhood watering hole" epitomized, and one of Mobile's best dives with great food!

Rob S.

Yelp
We had kind of struck out up to this point and I think there is a good chance we got here a little hangry. Places that were supposed to be open, not open. Places that we called and didn't have any wait - did have a wait. We had been walking around out in the muggy Mobile heat and were ready to drink something cold and take a break. My wife found Callaghan's and we were a little nervous they were packed out as well. Fortunately they had a back room with a table large enough for our party (7). Our waiter had good elements and some parts were just kind of so-so. We would go for long periods of time with no attention and then we would get a ton of attention over the next 10 or so minutes. They were busy, so I'm not sure if it's normal or not - but it took our food forever to come out! Once it arrived it was all really pretty good though. Would have been nice if our apps had gotten out to us a little sooner. Spinach dip and salsa should be a pretty quick turn around. By the time we were done they had satisfied us all. Everyone's orders were good, and most of the food was eaten, even though the portions were pretty nicely sized. I think the two things that stood out the most. The service could have been better. It wasn't horrible and in no way would prevent us from going back again and the fact that they charge a fee for using a credit card and don't communicate that openly (it may say somewhere - but they should tell you - it's pretty standard operating procedure to use a card when dining out). All in all we were pleased and in this case the three stars is exactly how they performed. It was definitely ok! Ok to the point we would go back and we could recommend them to others.

Yelp
This bar/restaurant, and I say it in that order on purpose, is right in the middle of a neighborhood. It was only about 15 mins from my hotel and I visited on a Wednesday night ...the night they serve their special burger with local sausage in it. Too bad I arrived about 1 hour too late and they had sold out. I came here for more than 1 reason, for the burger which is supposedly damn good for being a bar, and the fact that they have brown ale, which is somewhat hard to find in many bars. This place is old, and you can tell. That gives it character of course. Not really the place to take a first date, unless she is into old things. One of the coolest things about the food is they don't really advertise or have an official menu. Its just a plastic stand on the tables behind the beer list. Turns out the regular bacon cheeseburger is pretty good and obviously made with fresh beef. It came with a side and I chose potato salad which tasted store bought. This is one of several local institutions that I recommend visiting.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I'm giving this a 4 because the sides are tiny so it's expensive for what you get. The special LA burger is really good. The patty is slightly crispy cuz of the pork being cooked crispy. Which was really unique and I liked it. I felt like it could have used a little more flavor of some sort. The burger also didn't include any tomatoes on it? Good thing I ordered the cucumber salad which had tomatoes. The coleslaw on it didn't have any sweetness to it...which I personally like a touch of sweet to it. The bun was very good and soft. One of the best I have had.

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Best burger in town with the ambiance of an Irish Pub. This place has lots of history. The burger was amazing, and cooked to order. The kids grill cheese was good enough to order and the made in house sides as perfection.

Avery H.

Yelp
I really loved Callaghan's burgers and French onion dip the burgers are so yummy and juicy they are very large and they actually taste good as leftovers. The lady that owns the place is always so great with recommendations on what you might like.

Joseph H.

Yelp
Weather you are a little bit or a-lot Irish you will always be welcomed and will enjoy the food and drinks..

Bob M.

Yelp
Totally enjoyed our visit here. Hamburgers were great as was the Reuben. Atmosphere was awesome. Had a great time here and will definitely come back.

Tim L.

Yelp
My favorite place to go when I'm in Mobile. The burgers are great and the local ambiance can't be beat.

Hope F.

Yelp
This is a no frills, neighborhood hang. I got the chicken club even though I knew burger was the call. I regret my decision, but also not really because I obvi made my boyfriend order what I really wanted (burger with American cheese) and ate that... and mine. I ate both :/ We ordered chips and pasta salad and got Mediterranean salad and coleslaw.. but our server just laughed and said "now you can try all the sides!" as she brought what we had ordered. It was endearing and also 100% correct, because I love trying everything. TL;DR order the burger and pasta salad. That's the move and you know it!

Brooks R.

Yelp
Great old Mobile hangout with great food and a friendly staff. I feels like this place has been here for 100 year, maybe it has!!! It's small with seating inside and at the bar, as well as some table outside on the sidewalk. Dog friendly.

Jude H.

Yelp
We were traveling from Pace, Florida to New Orleans & stopped for lunch. We always need to find outdoor seating because we are traveling with our dog. Callaghans fit the bill. The food was very good and the staff brought water for our pup. We had burgers which were delicious and saw they have a good brunch menu which we saw other people enjoy. We will probably never eat there again because we were traveling through, but it really is a nice neighborhood hangout.

Joy S.

Yelp
This was recommended to us for a good burger while visiting Mobile. It sure was a good burger! We went on Sunday brunch time but we all ordered from the normal lunch menu. The lunch & dinner menu is simple but everything was done right. I got the bacon cheese burger with provolone. It was massive, very flavorful. The potato salad was mustard-y so I didn't finish that. But truthfully I didn't need a side as I couldn't finish my whole plate anyway! I deduct one star because they add 3.5% for card payment and this was not disclosed before paying (yeah I'm sure it was posted somewhere, but I didn't see it), and because it took a very long time to get our food (granted it was busy, and the server apologized). But everything else was good. Out of 7 people there was not one complaint about the food! I think we all would eat here again! * there are not any prices on the menu! But it was pretty reasonable. Our burgers plus side was only about $12.50 each *

Jason G.

Yelp
My husband and I went to Callahans for a quick dinner since it's a popular place to be, and overall, we appreciated the kitschy aspects of the place and the food was pretty spot on. The inside is basically a time warp to how bars used to be 40 years ago. ...And they have all the pictures on the wall to prove it! Certainly not the most modern establishment, nor are they going for that. This is a dive bar. They have a pretty good selection of beers, with local drafts and any bottles that you would want. The hamburger was unadorned and good for barfood. The Reuben had a huge amount of meat. The potato salad was the stand-out side dish! Overall, it's worth a trip to check out a Mobile institution!

Vanessa O.

Yelp
Very Friendly Bartender! We went earlier in the afternoon but will be back. Prices were GREAT!

Matt P.

Yelp
They have great hamburgers and the ambience is perfect. It is a hole in the wall off the beaten path but so worth it.

Stacy B.

Yelp
Best burger in Mobile! And the staff are so nice! We love our neighborhood bar! Convenient

Andy B.

Yelp
A historic Mobile tradition with excellent food and staff! Callaghan's IS Mobile. Nestled in the heart of the historic Oakleigh district, this modest Irish social club is a must for locals and visitors alike. I've sampleed everything on the menu but am always a sucker for their Reuben (see pics)! Local musicians play through out the weeks and you absolutely can NOT miss their St Patrick's Day block party.

Gerald S.

Yelp
Nice little discovery in an eclectic neighborhood. We rolled in on a busy Sunday, got seated in the side room. Been more fun in the main area. The brunch sounded like too much food, so we opted for burgers. a pleasant surprise they cooked them as requested. We live not too far, we'll be back for sure, parking can be a problem. The neighborhood residents must be tolerant folks? we parked a block or so away front of a house. We stumbled onto this Pub on our own then online I ran across something claiming the best Pub Grub in each State, clicked on it to see Callaghans was selected for Alabama. That cinched it, we gotta make it a point to scope this joint out. Glad we did, it's the real McCoy.

Jodi T.

Yelp
Great Black and Tan as always. They brought my sandwich out on the wrong bread at first and I guess used the same burger for my corrected sandwich...... totally went way past my requested medium rare. I think I stick to the Reuben

William D.

Yelp
Have eaten here many times over the years in my travels to Mobile and neglected to review it. however belated it does not matter as one thing is for sure Callaghan's is both consistent and timeless. They have other things on the menu and I am sure they are good but you come here for the burgers. The burgers are cooked the same way since 1940 are both world famous and amazing, by far the best in gulf coast if not the country. Despite all the press and fame this eatery remains humble and has not deviated from their core focus. Waitstaff are outgoing and entertaining and the service is excellent. If you come to Mobile take a trip of the beaten path and be sure to visit Callaghan's. Afterwards you can walk the burger off in the historic and absolutely stunning historic Oakleigh Plantation neighborhood.

Emily P.

Yelp
Always delicious and awesome service. One of the best spots in Mobile. The burger is tasty, and they have a great brunch!

Mike H.

Yelp
Awesome blood mary!!! Had the Dublin for breakfast, fluffy, full of seafood omelet. Service was excellent. Been to long. Weather was great and people were having a great time. Cant wait to come back

Michelle S.

Yelp
Callaghan's is a staple in the Oakleigh Garden District. The staff is always nice and friendly. They serve the best cocktails and they have a large variety of local beers to enjoy. I absolutely love their burgers. In my opinion Callaghan's has the best burger in Mobile. The Irish Dip is soooo delicious and a must try. We always bring any of our friends who visit us from out of town straight to Callaghan's so we can enjoy the delicious burgers, great drinks, and awesome live local music.

Lee J.

Yelp
Best Blackened chicken sandwich I've had in years!!! Friendly staff...

Shannon S.

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood dive bar in an interesting part of Mobile. They have a consistent live music schedule and there is always a good mix of folks of all ages. They also have quite a decent Sunday brunch offered alongside their regular menu so you get a good selection that should make most folks happy. Of special note is this is probably one of the few bars outside of New Orleans that is just like a neighborhood New Orleans bar where they serve good food and everybody is friendly unless you bring a rude carpetbagger attitude. I've never had any problems with the service and always found it to be attentive. The burger is claimed to be the best in Alabama which might be true but I've definitely had better but since I'm from NOLA I'm spoiled with awesome food all the time so it isn't a fair comparison. If you're looking for an authentic neighborhood dive bar experience this is probably your best option in Mobile. If I lived in Mobile this is where I would end up spending most of my social time.

Byron G.

Yelp
I have been coming to Mobile for about 5 years for work and this area has some great restaurants. I am very very upset with myself for not finding Callaghan's sooner. I cannot believe the local guys I know have not told me of this joint! The have daily specials and I have come back on Wednesday for the LA Burger. Last night I was here for dinner and it was fantastic so I just had to stay to try this burger.

Dean P.

Yelp
Top 10 best hamburgers in the South, love this place, every one has fun, love the atmosphere . Haven't try the brunch menu but sounds really good. Wish we could come more often but live to far away

Lauren N.

Yelp
Came around lunch, busy but not packed, and waited 40 minutes to even get out food--which was just two burgers with chips. Price for a burger with chips was too high imo, and it just wasn't that great. Burgers have no seasoning, just a simple burger meat and you can pick what you want on it, but nothing special.

John T.

Yelp
Our favorite local hangout in Mobile. The food and service is always awesome. Also a good venue for music.

Randall F.

Yelp
Without a doubt an interesting place to go to. No you don't have to be Irish to go the people are great there. The food was amazing as well. Take some time while waiting for your meal to look around at the nostalgia on the walls. The place has been there a long time. The writing on the wall proves it. On good weather days you can take your dog and sit outside.

Ashley H.

Yelp
Callaghan's has been on our bucket list for a long time. Seriously, even when we still lived in Memphis, and it's taken us almost three years to check it out. Walking up, we were warmly greeted by a sweet, beautiful little brindle pitbull on the porch. I guess you could say it was love at first sight (for me and the dog). The place has a pet friendly patio so the Jazz can go sometime! When we walked in, my husband experienced love at first sight with the bar. The bar dates back to 1946, and while there, we met an older man who told us he's been going there since he was about 16 and what it was like back then. We loved all the memorabilia covering the walls. It was rather appropriate that my hubs loved the place considering his sister refers to him as her little leprechaun. He even had on his Irish Yoga tshirt. No doubt the hubs fit in perfectly. He plopped down on a barstool and ordered a Black and Tan. I ordered a beer and we both decided on burgers, even though the brunch menu looked amazing. The burgers were so good! They were hand patted on a soft bun, and we got them topped with cheddar and bacon. We finished up our meal with bread pudding topped with whiskey sauce. It had a perfect texture and definitely had some nutmeg in it, and that whiskey sauce was delicious! Our total bill for two burgers, one bottled beer, two Black and Tans and bread pudding was about $45, which wasn't bad. The service was very friendly, but I would expect stellar service when I'm accompanied in an Irish pub by someone who could quite possibly be the Crichton leprechaun going incognito in a ball cap. ;)
