Old Treasures Fill New Hotels in the Catskills

"The original house dates back to 1905, and by the ’40s it had established itself as a resort, well in advance of the Catskills boom of the Sixties. It’s always been known for its singularly laid-back, laissez-faire atmosphere, and the slogan “a friendly place for nice people” is as true now as it was then. And while today’s Callicoon Hills retains its delightful throwback atmosphere, it’s right at home in the boutique-hotel era of the 21st century." - Mitchell Friedman

The Best New Hotels in the Catskills & Hudson Valley, NY - AFAR

"Occupying a 120-year-old property that began as a boarding house, this 65-room resort leans into the retro Catskills resort tradition—evoking the region’s heyday and even the aesthetic of classic films—while preserving historic ephemera and architectural details. Guest rooms sit in the restored early-1900s boarding house, a midcentury Pool House and hillside Ridge Rooms, all furnished with locally made pieces, ethically sourced rugs and Malin & Goetz amenities; rooms intentionally omit televisions. The grounds center on a large seasonal outdoor pool and include a pond, barn, coffee shop, bar and the Conover Club restaurant, with chef pop-ups featured throughout the season." - Devorah Lev-Tov

Just got home from a week-long stay in a Tree House room. My wife and I had an amazing week at Callicoon Hills. They do a great job making a comfortable, modern resort while preserving the natural feel. We never felt like we were at a bustling resort; it was quiet and serene (except for Saturday, which is to be expected). The grounds were pretty immaculately maintained. The room was clean and comfortable. The shower was a little bit lacking, but was good enough. The toiletries provided were very nice. If you’re planning a longer stay, a hanging clothes organizer may be a good idea, as there are no drawers in the room (but a large closet). The Conover Club was great. We had a great dinner with them. The staff is the real star of the show. Everyone we interacted with seemed happy to be there and happy to help with whatever we needed. We’ll be repeat visitors here.

Stayed for a whole week at the pool house. The location is beautiful with rolling hills, farms, rivers and more. The whole hotel including pool area is always kept clean and neat but the highlight for me was the staff! They go above and beyond with any request. Always have a smile and made you feel like friends instead of strangers. Also, must stop by and have a bite at the Conover Club Restaurant. Me and my wife are already planning our next stay!!

I absolutely loved every single detail about my stay at the hills! From the extremely comfortable bed and clean, cozy room to the gorgeous grounds to the beautiful pool in such a serene setting and the super friendly and accommodating staff. I stayed the weekend with my dog and it was just perfect. Can’t recommend this getaway enough! I will be back.

We were traveling for business and had a very pleasant stay at the property. The staff is amazing and very helpful. The food at Conover Club was decent but the Chicken dishes were little undercooked for our taste. The rooms are quite nice and have a very good vibe. The only thing we missed was the absence of television in the room. We were traveling with a 4 year old so keeping him occupied while in the room got tricky.

Callicoon hills is a beautiful location to escape for a couple of days. Very welcoming reception, they have a huge pool, two saunas, board games and a ping-pong. You can also have a good walk around and watch the stars. They offer yoga classes on Saturdays but our teacher didn’t show up and there was no notice. The gym is small but you can still have a decent workout there and the view is just incredible. They have wonderful fire pit and offer complementary smores kits. Also, there are a lot of farms around and you can also visit Woodstock while you are there. Highly recommended. The restaurant onsite is great as well.

Nestled in the serene Catskills, our stay in an A-frame at Callicoon Hills was pure magic. The cozy, stylish cabin was a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort, making for an ideal escape. We were enchanted by the wildlife, spotting graceful deer wandering through the grounds and hearing the rhythmic tap of a busy woodpecker – truly immersing us in nature's embrace. The tranquil surroundings and thoughtful amenities made for an unforgettable, rejuvenating getaway.

My bf and my dog stayed at Callicoon Hills for the long Memorial Day weekend. The property was beautifully enclosed in nature. We stayed at one of the hills house rooms. It was small but clean and all we needed for the three of us. Amenities include the pool, saunas and campfires (free smores kits and morning coffee were nice touches !). Our favorite part was the close proximity to cute towns and breweries in the Catskills like Livingston Manor, Seminary Orchards.

Overall, we had a nice stay. ||Important to note:|This property is lovely but was mostly families WITH kids and dogs. Adorable but just know this if you plan to go for a couples getaway. We didn't know this.||The room was adorable - could use better lights and the shower takes an actual 5 minutes to heat up but it did get hot! You have to walk up a hill for anything other than the pool rooms. Its short but steep - just an FYI. But such a pretty property and I liked it on the hill.||The pool is also lovely and big- this was ab big draw for us in coming - but you should note:|- the towels are the size of hand towels. Literally. You need 6 of them to make one pool towel so BYO towels.|- The pool is FULL of kids, see above!|-The umbrellas at the pool are limited. Since no service at pool you have to find you own chairs and snag some space under the awning. They could use more umbrellas. But eventually we figured out chairs and found spots.|-The water is ice COLD. Very refreshing if you can get in but should be noted.|- The van at the pool has only alcoholic drinks - no snacks and nothing non-alcoholic. For that you have to go to the checkin which is VERY limited. BYO snacks and drinks possibly.||The restaurant Conover Club was AWESOME. The food was amazing and vibe was amazing. Absolutely loved it.||Lawn games were great addition and the property in general is really so nice!||The service at the hotel is very limited. The staff was nice but you dont go here for the service. I would come back but only with my kids. It is a great location. Nearby to Livingston manor which is lovely and other wonderful towns.||Hope that helps. Wish I listened to the reviewer who mentioned how it is very full of kids. I would not have come for a couples thing but would come in the future with family.

Yelp
I went on a girls' getaway in February and we had quite the experience. If you want to disconnect from tech and reconnect with nature or self, then Callicoon Hills is the place for you. It is amazing how much fun you can truly have when you eliminate the distractions that can keep you from living in the present. Our room looked and felt serene. There were no TVs or phones. We were shocked but we knew that it would motivate us to explore the property and quaint town. Callicoon Hills was picturesque with units in buildings scattered across the 23-acre property. We stayed in the Pool House, which was close to the Rise & Grind Coffee Shop and the Conover Club in the Boarding House (the activity hub). Jessica was super helpful with helping us get settled in. Ooh, you will love the hot chocolate. I wish we made the time to sit by the bonfire pits for nightly s'mores. I appreciated the thoughtfulness behind the complimentary blankets. As working moms on different levels, we were eager to try the yoga class together. Our instructor, Kyle, put us at ease by fostering a safe, judgment-free environment. We laughed a lot as we realized our physical limitations yet did our best with modifications, of course. Full disclosure: I am afraid of heights. So I was nervous about climbing an incline to the gym (aka the impromptu cardio workout) but wanted to try a Peloton bike. Sadly, I was better off staying on the ground level. Brrr...the heaters will take a while to warm up the space. Following the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were hand sanitizers, wipes, or sprays to clean the equipment or mats before and after use. If you are not already a Peloton subscriber, the bikes require a credit card to initiate a trial subscription. Bummer, I had no cards on hand. So I kept it to the usual -- a stationary bike and treadmill. I do not recommend arriving at night, because it was a scary drive -- with highs, lows, and limited signage. Thankfully, we had an experienced driver at the wheel to ensure we arrived safely while I managed my anxiety. The daylight drives were amazing yet nerve-wracking lol. With a few minor improvements, I do not see why we would not visit again in the summer or fall to enjoy the pool and foliage. I will stay local and they can explore the hiking trails lol.

Yelp
Callicoon Hills was just what my family needed! We made a fleet of these tiny cozy cabins nestled in the middle of the beautiful woods home for the weekend. The beds were incredibly comfortable, and the build of the A-frame cabins were perfectly adequate for some hardcore peaceful sleeping. With the floor to ceiling window at the head of the bed, I felt both the safety and comfort of a luxury cabin, while also feeling connected to nature, as if there were no walls around me. The amenities in the very clean bathrooms were so nice, with high end soaps, shampoos, and conditioners. The grounds of the resort had plenty to do like really nice hiking trails, a dining hall with great local beers, a gym and a steam sauna that I made a lot of use of. The fire pits were perfect for connecting and making forever memories with my family. The staff were all so lovely, attentive, and discreet, allowing for us to feel a certain amount of freedom without feeling too supervised. I can't recommend this place enough for a group of friends, family, or even a solo or couples adventure.

Yelp
the wifi is terrible unless you are at the center. the units we had ran out of hot water. the plumber stated that although the place had been remodeled they did not put in a large enough water heater. he said they had been told this but did not because they need to upgrade their electrical system and they do not have propane service nor natural gas service at this location. however, the personnel at the location are great to deal with, just need the support of the owners, a hedge fund.
