We saw the theatre while having lunch in town the other day and decided to stop by for a date night. It is a single theatre and from the moment you enter you can’t help but admire its character. For an old historic theatre it is extremely well kept. The lobby and design of the theatre holds historic elements of a theatre while providing up to date quality. Popcorn was delicious and they had different types of salt, like garlic and ghost pepper which was such a pleasant treat to add. Theatre is surprisingly huge from what it may seem from the outside. Projection/screen is one of the best I’ve seen. Employees were sweet, warm, and friendly. I think I will come back to this area just for this theatre

As a history buff I had to stop by the old theater in town. Showings are limited but try to go if you can! The theater is amazing, they even have real butter for the popcorn and offer chocolate egg creams for drinks. My inner child was born a 90 year old from Brooklyn so this made my day! Staff was friendly, place was clean, and the movie quality was excellent (the theater is old but the equipment they use is all newer and digital).

Honestly, I like this theater for simply existing in a small charming town. I love the colors of the building and the signage looks great. It's tiny, and I believe it generally only has two showings a weekend day. Sign says it's closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

My experience here was overall delightful. This cozy establishment gets the job done with its small yet inviting atmosphere. The service was excellent, and the staff ensured a pleasant visit from start to finish. The selection of snacks offered was impressive, adding to the enjoyment of the movie experience. However, while the intimate theater setting added charm, some may find the chairs a bit uncomfortable for longer screenings. Nevertheless, this place remains a top choice for those seeking a comfortable and enjoyable movie night out.

Poor service. No combos. Expensive. Movie supposed to start at 2 it did not. According to the people i know the movie started at 245. Like wow. Not cool. I left after 30 minutes of no movie. It was old school theater which is cool and nostalgic, but man. Not worth the drive. Not going back. You lost our business.

Nostalgic, beautiful, well kept theater. Sound system and screen are up to date, but the theater itself is historic feeling. Makes you feel like you're stepping back in time a bit, but in the best way possible. Prices are reasonable. Would love to see some more classics played around the holidays (Halloween, Christmas, etc.)....regardless, my husband and I will continue to return 😊

Always so sweet and cozy. I do miss having someplace to put my drink when I'm there, but it's a vintage sort of local theater so I'll forgive it that. Recently had an event for a popular movie with triva and a costume contest. They have a stage, and had a mic setup and it was really fun and wholesome, even with a mostly adult audience. The prizes were very thoughtful, and encouraged everyone to enjoy themselves rather than be competitive. Lots of people spilled out to the front walk and were talking to each other. There's only one screening room, and usually it seems they only have one showing per night, but it makes it feel like a special event. But more accessible because you don't have to drive hours to the nearest big franchise theater. Plenty of places in town to enjoy the night out before going to the theater. More likely to talk to a stranger who was in the theater with you watching the same movie as you were, even, or especially, if they aren't a local. Let me take a moment of nostalgia, just to say, it takes me back to when I was in elementary school and many of our class trips were to see movies here. I remember Tuck Everlasting especially, because we had read the book in class right before it was released.

Another fun evening at the Callicoon Movie Theater! It is a treat to be able to see a movie on a giant screen in such a historic building. The popcorn is always tasty and you can choose from water, juice, soda or alcoholic drinks.

Yelp
Love this theater! Built in 1948, this huge (350 seat!) theater is vintage but has been fully modernized, with a digital projector and Dolby. They show a mix of feature films, including the big-name first-run attractions but only have one screen. Technical quality is excellent. The arched roof (built on wooden beams--like a wooden ship, upside down) makes it like a big tube and you get that big movie theater sound. I love the history and the lobby is like a little museum. The original projector, a carbon-arc, 16-mm film projector, is there next to a display case (which used to be the candy counter) with old tickets, signage, and relics of the past. The lobby has posters from old showings, like Godfather, The Graduate. The ticket booth and many of the furnishings are original but the place is very clean and well organized. Fun fact: Originally the Harden Theater, named for its founder, it became the Arden Theater when the H fell off the marquee and the owner didn't want to be bothered to replace it. We had a birthday party there and the owner, Kristina was very helpful. They showed a movie at 10:30 on a Saturday, then we had cake and snacks in the lobby, then went to a local pizza place. Fun place for a party and a great theater.

Yelp
It's a classic theater with a great old time vibe. Very clean. Family owned. I've been to it twice so far and looking forward to more this year.

Yelp
Great place. A bit of history, Reasonable tix prices. Popcorn is overpriced but I get it - it's where they make their money to keep this gem going.

Yelp
This is a cool theater and I'd give it 5 stars except for one thing: I am regrettably very fat and also have a minor disability. The seats are unbearably uncomfortable for me to sit in since they jab into my sides. I asked the previous owner if he'd consider adding a few seats that heavy people could fit in comfortably and he simply said "no." Wow. I can't be the only heavy or large person who attempts to go to movies there. I am only in Sullivan County twice a year so I'm not a regular there but I know that others would benefit from the addition of a few larger chairs. Other than the small seats it's a very charming place in a very charming town.

Yelp
There's no better theater, for my money, anywhere. You can tell there's some magic the second you see the marquee. The koby has been lovingly and beautifully restored, with a really fun variety of snacks. The theater itself is massive, with a great screen, great sound, and a throwback vibe that can't be beat. It's probably the only theater I'll feel comfortable visiting once they open again. Love this place.

Yelp
A very good theater. It's family owned and run. The real deal. Fresh movies, wholesome prices and good pop corn. Old school theatre and modern conveniences. Parking can be difficult but the bathroom is pleasant. Seats are not luxurious but the floor is not sticky. Only one movie plays at a time but it's usually something you should see if you want to or not. @@@@@ not handicapped accessible???? But kid friendly.

Yelp
The Callicoon Theater is a great place to see a movie! The movie selection is well curated and I love being able to see new releases right in my backyard. As someone who grew up going to the Hippodrome in Loch Sheldrake, the nostalgia of a classic movie theater makes the viewing experience even better. There aren't too many of these original movie theaters open in Sullivan County, let's support and preserve this gem! The new owner did a great job of fixing and updating some key components while sticking to the integrity of the old school vibe. The popcorn is great too!

Yelp
This is the best theater around! Excellent popcorn, & very charming art deco styling.

Yelp
what an experience! it was such a neat experience to see queen's bohemian rhapsody here! i loved how the theater is cool by preserving its history without making it hip. it is truly a real deal. the price of the ticket is ridiculously low for what you get. i will be definitely back when i am in the area.

Yelp
We are very lucky to have such a wonderful movie theater in the small town of Callicoon. The new owner has started a movie club for all of us who spend winters here. We get to go ord on what movieS to see and have eight movies every other Tuesday from January to April. It certainly makes tolerating winters more bearable. The theater is large and has great sound. This year, academy Award nominated animated shorts and other categories will be a shown. And we won't have to drive the 2 1/2 hours to NYC. Gotta love it!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Great small local theater! Not tons of options in Sullivan county so it's great to see these guys still doing their best. Awesome small business to support, friendly staff and fun movie selections!

Alexandra M.

Yelp
The Theater is a classic and great part of our community! They just remodeled the concessions stand and it looks beautiful. They're open only for special reservations right now but it's a great place, run by great people.

Shanelle A.

Yelp
I have always been impressed with how a small town like Callicoon has managed to maintain such a wonderful little theater. It is establishments like this that not only provides character and uniqueness for the town, but it also provides a great resource for town locals and it attracts others from outside the area and leaves them with a positive impression of what Callicoon can offer. We're very lucky, and I am happy to support this theater in any way I can. Keep doing what you're doing! You are appreciated.

Christine T.

Yelp
What an adorable theater in an adorable town! This is everything "upstate New York" should be. Current topics presented in a throw back setting. The sound system was fantastic. There were just enough concessions to satisfy - let the cute town of Callicoon take care of the rest before or after the show! Loved the original projector on display in the lobby. It truly shows the respect for the film industry and the local community. We can't wait to go back soon!

Yelp
This is a very charming family owned theater and the owners and staff are very hospitable. The antique movie projector displayed in the lobby along with the high vaulted ceilings adds to the old retro ambience. It feels like you're going back in time. The seats are pretty old (maybe even the original ones since it opened) but it's not uncomfortable and adds to the character. The popcorn is ok and not over priced. They also sell fun size candies like laffy taffy's by the piece which I love because I can just get a few rather than buying a whole box. The only disappointing thing is that they refuse to accept MOVIE PASS purchases even though MP lists them on their app. Their credit card machines are able to process the cards but for whatever reason they don't want to. I wish I knew this ahead of time before driving 20 minutes to get to this theater but I guess its up to MP to update their app. So for a MoviePass subscriber like me, I would only come here for the ambiance and to support the local business. If they accepted MoviePass I would probably come here more often even though it's farther away from most theaters in my area.

Yelp
This is a great movie theater, and it would be even if it was not THE ONLY MOVIE THEATER IN SULLIVAN COUNTY!!!!!! The Mall Quad in Monticello shut down a few weeks ago, so this is it, people. The Callicoon Theater is one of the rare remaining one-screen theaters anywhere, and it has 360 seats according to the website. It is clean, comfortable -- big seats and plenty of room between the rows-- and just generally terrific. A real gem. Only problem is the ONE screen and the fact that it doesn't always show first run movies. Right now it is showing "Julie and Julia," so I have no complaints. Great theater, and not only that, the ONLY theater, unless you want to go to Middletown (yuck) or Honesdale, which is a 45-minute drive away and not too bad.

Julia T.

Yelp
Going to this theater is like stepping back in time. A time where cleanliness mattered, prices mattered and where one movie played at a time. It's even a nice place just to get out of the summer's heat and spend an evening in the air conditioner, (if you don't have one). The owner sells the tickets and popcorn and they are FRIENDLY!!!. It's a true movie experience. This theater has been open continuously since the 40's and they are proud of that fact. Yes sometimes the movies are a little old, (like a week or two after other theaters), but sometimes they are the same movies showing at "the big theaters" for almost half the price. Parking is on the street, so you are never more than a block from your car. I LOVE this place!!! A true treat for us movie goer's in Callicoon. A step back in time.

Gab G.

Yelp
The Callicoon Theater has been a favorite of my family's (and friends') for as long as I can remember. Some of the below reviews have mentioned that this theater is a second-run (meaning it shows movies a little later than at, say, the AMC), but lately this is not the case. I will always choose this theater over going to Middletown (that is, if they're playing a movie that I wish to see) because the people below me have said it all--reasonable prices for both tickets and food, and a simply charming experience.

mabel N.

Yelp
This place is just as good as all the previous comments claim. Going to the Callicoon Theater is like stepping into a time machine. Tickets are cheap and so are snacks, the owners and people working there are nice and it is always such a great, communal experience to see a film there. The only thing I wish they would improve is their list of movies, I feel like most of the time I am up here they are screening a kids movie or something that got bad reviews. I would like to see them screen some more sophisticated films, or atleast films that cater to a wider audience. (i.e. The Simpsons Movie, which I saw here--and had the entire theater busting up!) I love you Callicoon Theater!

Yelp
I love this theatre. The owners are kind and personable. It is one of the only venues for regular cultural activity in the region. Lovingly restored and cared for.

Yelp
Saw Star Wars here today. Great screen, comfy seats in an authentic old time theater. Surround sound is AWESOME!

Yelp
While spending the summer at French Woods performing arts camp a few years back, the highlight of many campers' summers was indeed our Lazy Day, which meant not sticking to the usual camp schedule and leaving camp in shifts to go see a movie. In this case, it was the remake of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" with Johnny Depp. I had already seen the movie once before with my parents, but I didn't mind seeing it again. Besides, seeing the movie again with a bunch of theater geeks (and I say that lovingly) who shouted out lines of their own (now this was no Rocky Horror, but it's bad enough that one could make it into an audience participation film!) made it a million times better!

Catskilljohn B.

Yelp
Took my family there over the weekend and my wife exclaimed it was "the best movie experience I ever had". I love historical buildings, and when they are in the Catskills... even better. It was like we stepped into a time machine and went back 50 years, and the display of the original projector is a very classy touch! Loved it, loved the folks running it, loved how clean and comfortable it was, loved it!!!

Don P.

Yelp
Great place to see a movie. Incredible atmosphere, friendly staff. Now complete with totally updated digital projector and high quality sound system. Traditional tasty movie snacks! My Girlfriend and I love this place. :-)

Karen R.

Yelp
what a unique place to see a movie. They kept the historic feel of the theater. It is run by a very nice couple, and they are doing a great job trying to keep good movies current and for all genres. Keep up the good work!

Yelp
I allowed my 13 year old son to go to this theater with 3 friends unsupervised - he has earned my trust and he did well. I showed up to pick the kids up but the movie had another 30 minutes to go, so I asked if I could use the restroom while waiting for the movie to end. After using the restroom, I went into the entrance of the theater to see if I could spot my son to tell him that I was parked a block down the road so that he knew where to look for me when he came out. The owners, apparently a husband & wife, came in & told me I couldn't be in there unless I paid for a ticket. I told them my purpose & they said that if I didn't trust my son to go to the movies alone, I should have paid for a ticket & gone in with him. So I asked if I could go in if I paid the ticket price. They said yes. I said, "I see, it's all about the profit." So I offered to pay the ticket fee & they still denied me access to my son saying that there was only 20 minutes left and no other theater would have let me in either. I said, "So you are denying me access to my son." They reiterated that I shouldn't have let him go unsupervised if I didn't trust him. I tried to explain that it was nothing about trust, not that it was their place to decide that kind of thing with other people's kids, but that I simply needed to let my son know where I would be parked. They still denied me access to my son. I asked them if they had children to which they replied "no". I realized that they obviously don't understand a parent/child relationship. I was about to go in and yank my son out of this poorly managed theater but I didn't want to embarrass my son since he was on his first date with a girl. I cannot believe that these people denied me access to my child. I will never go here again or let my child go here again. It was appalling and embarrassing.
