The Best Restaurants in the Catskills | Bon Appétit

"I spent sunny afternoons at Callicoon Wine Merchant, a tapas bar just off Main Street with a cute backyard garden, eclectic wines and craft beers, and a rotating lineup of seasonal small plates like deep-fried olives with labneh, mini ricotta toasts with charred broccoli rabe pesto, and pickled mussels with local meadow butter." - ByAli Francis

Google
One of my favorite restaurants in New York states. The food is amazing and the wine is great. Service is chill, and the owner is super friendly. This is the most Mediterranean vibe I got in the US

Douglas A.

Google
When was the last time you raved about pea sprouts or carrots and chickpeas, well if you have them here you will❣️ the fried halloumi with orange and saffron, yeah that was me licking the plate 😅, seared duck w/pickled cherries, perfect, cold pot roast.... $7/plate, plan on 3-5 plates a person and leave feeling you just had a 5 star meal, because you did‼️

Google
Sounds silly but my favorite thing about the wine merchant is I never have any guess work with picking a tasty wine; the wine selection is always perfect and delicious. The staff is super friendly/welcoming and we can’t forget about the food… As someone who loves to order a little bit of everything the small plates and tapas are perfect. Every dish is so beautifully presented and tastes amazing.

Fantastic food , wonderful wine and awesome people. We had a great time and loved all the wines. Salute 🍷 Back again and loving every dish of food. Consistently an amazing meal. Thank you all again.

Google
Don’t listen to any of the haters. This place is amazing. Awesome vibes (great choice in music, my dude), great service, delicious foods, and OF COURSE fantastic wines. Is that enough adjectives to convince you?! If this place were a hotel I’d stay here and drink wine all day while enjoying their fresh olive assortments and other delicious small food plates. Come hang out at a dope place with dope food, dope people, dope wine, and the best atmosphere in all of upstate NY.

Google
One of the best restaurants in America, no hyperbole at all. The attention to detail, the thoughtfulness and intentionality, every single aspect of the meal is curated to your taste, and all in the least pretentious environment imaginable. This is an important restaurant, be sure to put it at the top of your bucket list.

Google
Delicious! Great tapas with amazing flavors and textures. The wines aren’t your typical finds and were also excellent. Highly recommend. (We had tuna, chorizo, ricotta, pork tenderloin and others)

Google
What a gem 🤩 We got there really by chance as we were heading back to Ithaca after a night of camping. The food was so unique and interesting, everything was freshly made and just delicious. The food was made creatively and the tastes of all those all dishes was just beautiful. Dont pass on the cold tomato soup and the corn ice cream these are just a must try. The service was great, we had a waitress named Lulu who just made this experience whole with her approach and her ability to understand what we were looking for so quick. If you ever pass around Calicoon, look for Calicoon Wine Merchant for sure

Yelp
Hello . I wrote this a month ago and it languished in draft form. So, our last visit there was around August 24. They often have the Lager from Jack's Abbey (a Massachusetts brewery) in cans. On that day, we had a bottle of Rosé. Yesterday we had these small plates: Seared Duck Breats w/ pickled cherries, Chilled Pot Roast w/ pickled vegetables, pot roast Salt Cod Croquette, and Tonjes Rambler Cheese with Honey. Ice Cream also and a bottle of Rose. Tapas and Small plates never disappoint. We have been here many times and taken out -of -towners a couple times. There was a fancy cocktail list. Watermelon/Dolan looked good. Beautiful day, excellent service. Recommended.

James M.

Yelp
Cannot recommend this place more. Better than most of the other places around. The smoked trout salad was the highlight of the meal. Very good for quick lunch and service was friendly.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Try the ricotta donuts! Delish! These melt in your mouth concoctions are light and fluffy with a hint of lemon flavor. Paired with a glass of wine- bliss!

Yelp
What an absolute find, and great overall experience. After meandering down a side alley to check out Spruce Home Goods, David the owner suggested the Callicoon Wine Merchant for a bite. Our visit made a picture perfect day even better. The owner made great recommendations on wine and food. The Server was delightful and also made a few excellent recommendations on what to have next as my wife and I enjoyed several courses. Highly recommend enjoying some time here. Thank you!

Vida

Yelp
What a great find sown an alley in the cute village in Callicoon! We got to meet the owner Rob, who served us up some great beer, wine, bubbly and appetizers. We didn't purchase wine but there was a good selection in the adjoining room. We will be back!

Yelp
We loved this place. We came for an early dinner and ordered a bunch of food: two cheeses, two orders of olives, coppa, rosette, ricotta with ramp pesto on toast, egg and anchovies on toast, ham croquettes, cod croquettes, and a chocolate tart. It was all delicious, with the ricotta, meats, olives, and ham croquettes being the standouts for me. (My wife also really loved the blue cheese with honey.) Definitely will be back here on our next visit to this region.

Yelp
Didn't even know it was there! What an amazing place to go if you haven't been. We tried plenty and one thing was better than the next. Check out what we had! The romesco and pickled mussels were our favorites but everything was amazing and can't wait to come back again! Thanks!

Yelp
We were caught somewhere between lunch and dinner and decided to try this lovely place. It was delightful. From the garden, to the service, food and drink. My husband was happy to sample some IPA's and my white wine was amazing (I bought a case). The tapas options were diverse and delicious. The tuna stuffed hot peppers, seared pork with tonnato and local blue with honey...heavenly. We can't wait to go back, wish we lived closer!
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic, one selection!! I have yet to taste one wine that has not wowed me. The store is lovely and the tapas are very tasty. And let's not even get started on their delicious ice cream.
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
What a phenomenal addition to Callicoon and the greater area. Not only have they knocked it out of the park with the wine selection (broken down easily by flavor profile with handwritten notes on each bottle), but the wine bar and tapas room off of the main shop is flat out spectacular. The service, selection, and ambiance leave nothing to be desired. This place is a home run from top to bottom. I can't recommend any one menu item over another, as it changes based on what's fresh seasonally. You won't be disappointed with whatever you choose.

Yelp
Delicious tapas, cheese, meats and wine. Very friendly and intimate space, great place to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. Ask Pat about the movie club in the winter months!

Yelp
Perfect spot for a light dinner and delicious wine. The menu is varied and interesting. Everything I've had has been delicious. Get the ricotta with honey! I'm

Yelp
Summer time upstate, this is where you need to be. The new location is perfect, it creates a beautiful little space outdoors and more parking. The left side of the building is the wine store with a variety of great wines, the French burgundy here is so good! Heading to the right when you come in is the wine and tapas bar with craft beer as well. An abundance of choices will have you coming back for more. We tried 5 small plates, which can be a bit deceptive as they're more of an amuse-bouche, one bite-type of plates. However, they're flavorful and well thought out plates. Ask the staff for matching accompaniments with your wine and you won't be disappointed.

Ariana G.

Yelp
We absolutely love the vibe at this place. Great concept, good food, friendly service!

Yelp
A recommendation from a local friend which turned out to be better than expected. Fabulous food, wine selection and location.

S J.

Yelp
The tapas here is amazing!! It's almost impossible not to order every item on the menu. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and always willing to help you pick out the perfect food and wine pairing. Robin is an incredibly knowledgeable and accomplished chef who brings a taste of the city to upstate NY year round. Great vibes, great food, great wine, great people.

Noah C.

Yelp
This place is terrible. The portion sizes are tiny and there are only like 6 wines on the wine list. The single chef barely talks to the customers and the server spent more time chatting with customers he is friends with than me. I'm a very sophisticated foodie from NYC and I know a good restaurant when I see one. And this isn't a good restaurant. I'm kidding...this place is amazing. The food is fantastic, wines are very curated, service is friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy. But they frame negative reviews and hang them up, so here's to hoping this review makes it onto the wall.
google avatar

Vallejo G.

Yelp
Great wine at good prices to drink there or takeout, great tapas. Outdoor seating. Robyn knows his wines.
google avatar

JulieAnn S.

Yelp
We sat outside for tapas and wine after a tour of local breweries. I don't eat meat so we ordered exclusively fish and veggie based tapas and they absolutely blew us away. Our favorite was the cod croquette - simply amazing. The ricotta was a very close second. Great tapas, great wine, great service. Would absolutely recommend this place to anyone!

Yelp
Pretentious is an understatement I walked in and nobody tried selling me anything or asking me what I was looking for. I was waiting for that! With this wine selection, you're going to want to ask questions! Picked out two and paid 50 bucks for wines (if tasted) would not have paid that kind of money! My take on the place from the owner's perspective: throw a really cool space together and fill it with low level wines and up charge the F out of them. Worked on me once and never again. I hope your restaurant carries you because this bu;;shit won't
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Buy some wine, but not before you've eaten at least a handful of the tapas available from the bar. All ingredients are locally-sourced, whenever possible, and many are cured in-house (i.e. the smoked trout). Have a glass of rosé & try whatever strikes your gustatory fancy. House-made ricotta with tapenade ... smoked trout with labneh ... cold pot roast with pickled vegetables ... It's hard to go wrong, honestly. All plates are $5-6 (maybe a couple of exceptions) & you can make a meal out of 2 or 3. When you're done, check out Spruce Home Goods, behind the lot.
google avatar

Yelp
Great wine and cider by glass or bottle . This guy knows what he is doing in the kitchen too .. tapas is pretty great ... ask for robins deep fried balls .. they're real good indeedy ... don't miss his "Sunday sauce " either . Please note *** Don't try ordering "da Sunday sauce " on any day but Sunday , it could get you banned
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Quaint cozy friendly & delicious tapas & wine affordable. Not pretentious. feels like you belong.

Yelp
I want to let you know that we decided to return. The Callicoon Wine merchant moved locations and had a full Tapas Menu - So lets give it another try. They won us over..... I took my daughter for a quick bit and it was delicious! It is still owned by the same people but they are doing what they do best.. The owner is in the back cooking and he knows what he is doing. I very friendly gentleman is running the bar and wine area. Everyone seems much happier as where we. I cant wait to go back and try everything on the menu. I definitely recommend trying this if you are in the catskills and find yours self in Callicoon. Worth the visit.
google avatar

Dayna H.

Yelp
The tapas here are amazing, and they are constantly changing depending on what is available from local farms. There are always a few vegetarian options. The homemade sodas are really good too! The location is super cute and is also home to a wine shop.
google avatar

Rachael C.

Yelp
Wonderful wine selection in the store. The restaurant is serving fantastically delicious fare and great wines. As a New Yorker everything feels like a bargain here. Makes me want to go to Callicoon on a regular basis.

J D.

Yelp
My wife and I ate here tonight. Absolutely fantastic. The tapas were creative and delicious, the drinks menu was small but well-chosen, and the wine store had an incredible selection. Really, really great meal and service. Highly recommend!

Alex P.

Yelp
I've been to this establishment 4 times. I will start by saying, I liked the tapas and small plates and felt that the execution was high end and the food tasted good. I will also say that the wine selection was good, but not great. At a wine merchant/wine bar, I would expect more. I would expect a better selection and a more knowledgeable staff leading clients in what to order. This is not the case. Their young and inexperienced server staff isn't equipped to guide the average client on what to order. In addition, they are frequently out of items on their menu, both food related and wine related, and their servers are stretched in terms of the number of patrons they need to serve. They will often ignore you for sometime until they can eventually get to you. In addition, and most importantly, I feel that the owners treat their clients differently depending on certain parameters. On the 4 different trips I've made here the one consistent experience has been that I've been treated in a lesser manner than other patrons. I've been discriminated against, plain and simple. Tonight my husband and I were there and very clearly served a half glass of wine each when all others around us were served double the amount! I brought this up to our server in a polite way and she reluctantly brought us a regular glass of wine. I don't understand this and it's happened on at least half the occasions we've been there. We are polite, well dressed people who treat our servers with respect and kindness. Why then are we being discriminated against? I can only assume that this establishment is run by a group of snobs who discriminate blatantly against anyone who isn't in their inner local circle. I won't go back. I've had enough. These owners are nasty and mean people and I decided I will spend my money elsewhere. There are many lovely establishments in Callicoon who deserve my patronage far more than this bunch of nasty snobs. Don't go here.

Yelp
Carefully curated wines by the glass -- anything on offer is going to be good. Food is really really really good. Beautiful, inventive, flavorful, seasonal, real. Amazing to have this quality in this little rural hamlet.

Nicki P.

Yelp
Just the best! Every single item on Robin's menu is sublime - this visit we tried pretty much everything :-O Wines are adventurous and fun. Love perusing the store and finding new treasures to bring home. Vibe is relaxed, cozy and oh so friendly. Love everything about this place and can't wait to go back for more.

Beth O.

Yelp
What a wonderful spot! We got to Callicoon for our girls week on Sunday and headed straight there. We got stuck in a down pour but that didn't stop us from enjoying our first glass of delicious wine in the shop. Rain stopped, the tables were wiped down, and we indulged in the best Sunday sauce! We came back again that week for a late afternoon glass of summer wine and small plates. I can't say enough about Robin's cooking. It's a must try! Oh we also stopped in the cheese and linen shop just behind the merchant after our wine. Very cute finds in there too!

Yelp
I'm going against the popular tide of reviews but I'm afraid to say that in all conscience, this is how I feel. I moved to Sullivan Co from NYC and while I don't expect the range of wine options in the city, I was looking forward to finding an interesting store with some variety that could be my nearby go-to place. I did some research and Callicoon Wine Merchant seemed to be a solid bet. I called to see what their closing time was and someone answered and said 7pm. I said something along the lines of 'ok, just checking thanks' and the person hung up without saying anything. I thought nothing of it but in hindsight, it mirrored my experience at the store. I drove there and found a bustling crowd outside, which was cool. It's split between a wine store and wine bar and I guess the wine bar was so busy that people were spilling outside (it was nice to see a crowd anywhere in Sullivan County!). I went into the wine store section on the left and it was empty. There was a register but nobody was behind it. I wondered if I should pay on the wine bar side. Someone walked through and said nothing to me and I looked at him with my best 'I'm confused and need help face' and he asked me if I needed anything. I asked where I should pay if I wanted to buy a bottle and he said on the wine bar side. OK, no problem. I chose wine and went over to pay. The same guy was in conversation with someone. He took my wine and rang it up while still talking to the same person. He didn't tell me the price, I read it from the register. He took my money and gave me my change. He was still talking to the other person and didn't utter a word to me. I've always thought that the myth of bad service in nyc was bull**** but by the same token, I've found myself enjoying the friendliness of service in Sullivan County. And I guess the yelp review had created an expectation of a knowledgable and engaged experience here. Maybe that's what made it so disappointing. I've never experienced this level of 'couldn't care less' in Brooklyn. It was busy for sure and I might have been a low priority, but this didn't seem like the right way to engage with a customer on any level. I guess I'll keep looking for a local wine store.

Yelp
This new wine shop is attached to a cheese shop that sells bread and other fancy food products (at fancy food prices). The effect is upscale without being too much for a town that still proudly holds a yearly tractor parade. The owner, Robin, prides himself on interesting selections. That's good, because there are other options in town for liquor and jug wine. This is a boutique wine shop, and Robin knows every bottle in the store. He favors un-oaked wines. While you can easily find a splurge bottle, the focus here is on quality table wines in the $12-$17 price range. There was no source for Austrian or Greek wines in Callicoon before this place opened - it wasn't even possible to find a good dry rose! Befuddled patrons are respectfully steered toward something in their price range they're likely to enjoy. Wine geeks will find a satisfying chat here in addition to satisfying bottles. If a bottle is open samples will be offered. It's not hard to drop more than you planned here, not because Robin is pushy - he's anything but - there's simply so much here to try. Sure, you could drive to the City and find most of these wines for a dollar or two cheaper per bottle. But you're not in the City; you're on Lower Main Street in Callicoon. And what do we have here? Interesting wines and a little gourmet shop with expensive imported cheeses. All without a whiff of pretense - instead you get the knowledgeable respectful service that ought to be a part of any boutique shop experience. That's very nice. Four star nice for Callicoon.

Leah C.

Yelp
Secodnd visit here. The small plates an tapas are dreamy. But i always feel i am not welcome- I have trouble reading the menu- it's on a blackboard behind the bar and outside and on instagram but never easy to see and trying to do so leads to abrupt "can i help you?"s from staff. Warm welcomes to others all around us, none for us. After paying, the waiter who was so friendly and made fusses over others as they left never looked in our direction again. Just felt unwanted. Ill be back for teh food but not happy with the manners.

Yelp
My husband and I frequent the Callicoon Wine merchant. A lot. Maybe it's all the amazing cheese. If you love blue cheese? This is the place for you. I had a blue cheese so good there that I wanted to smother it across my face. His other selections are phenomenal. We also love the selection of meats, olives, salami, honey, crackers... But the wine is what makes the place. Also the fact that the owner knows *every* bottle. He has wines for all tastes and given the superb quality, the price in right on in terms of value and selection. On Friday nights, my husband and I have our "lazy dinner." Salami, cheese, olives, cornichons, with a little bit of honey. We pick a nice bottle of wine and it's a date night. All at the Callicoon Wine merchant!
google avatar

Bob K.

Yelp
So great to have perfectly selected wines & cheeses from around the world in a small town shop. Guy who runs it does great job and evenings has nice wine bar local vibe.
google avatar

Gabi S.

Yelp
Excellent wines- Robin really knows everything about wine AND cheese. Delicious Manchago and Drunken Goat! Great place- great place in Callicoon!!!
google avatar

Gabriel S.

Yelp
We come here every chance we can! We have a country house in Long Eddy; and Callicoon is our local town. Robin and team do a fantastic job here. The small plates are superb; the wines by the glass are excellent to have on the bar or out on the deck. Honestly Callicoon needs another decent dining option; let's hope they open up the menu more. Solid wine selection in the wine shop. Delicious desserts and a great selection of cheeses! There is nothing in Callicoon on par with this shop!

Gina E.

Yelp
We came on a slow day because of a recommendation from a local bartender in Jeffersonville, and had our choice of several metal tables in the gravel patio area. There were only two vegan options on the menu, and they were pretty tasty. But as the sun came out it became uncomfortably hot, and because there were no tables in the shade, we decided to move a table about 5 feet into the only shady area within the gravel patio. The owner ran out and literally chastised us for moving the furniture, immediately moving the table back to its original spot, "No! I can't have you moving the furniture!" I can understand if there's some kind of policy against moving tables (though any reasonable person would have done the same as us), but I just can't understand why the owner was so rude and condescending to new customers patronizing his restaurant. Naturally, we will not be returning or recommending, and it's unfortunate we gave this guy our business in the first place.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
More than a wine store or a wine bar--so much more! The snug setting is cozy, and full of friendly people who love good wine and excellent food. The tapas are varied and keep coming. The wine choices are exceptional; they don't have "house wine," they serve what they have on the shelves, always top picks from Italy, France or other great wine regions. And you can try before you buy at the wine bar. Being a vegetarian, I usually order the non-meat options. Favs: the local chanterelle mushroom and local egg, yellow pea hummus, golden cauliflower; but my friends have savored the pulled pork and pot roast and rave. This is a must in Callicoon.

Jason W.

Yelp
The tappas is amazing.. We walked out stuffed. Pot Roast - I hate cold food but loved this. I recommended the owner change the name as its so unassuming people wont order it. but it was fab. Chicken Confitt - just right. I don't eat eggplant but the Smoked Babaganoush was a completely new experience. Sherry braised Chorizo .. Chocolate Torte. Ice cream not overtly impressive but everything else I will drive back for again and again. The owner was a NYC chef that sold his restaurant and exited to the country to raise a family. SO glad we stopped. OH and there is a great country store near by it that sells amazing gourmet cheese and premium linens. We spent alot that day but worth it ;)
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
I am so happy this place exists in Callicoon. The wine selection is well curated and focuses on small producers. My family and I recently had lunch here and tried numerous small plates and tapas and everything was excellent. We will definitely be back!

Kim B.

Yelp
Love this place. The small plates are amazing (smoked trout is to die for!) Robin puts together some great combinations and Pat is pleasant behind the bar. Always a great selection of wines both at the bar and at the shop behind the restaurant. Don't miss the Sunday Sauce!

Debi M.

Yelp
Robin has been a fixture in the area for years, but this endeavor is a real home run. The location is adorable - much needed in Callicoon. But this is not just a cute little place to set your eyes on, your tummy will thank you too. The Sunday sauce is off the charts. This first gen Italian American, who never orders red sauce at a restaurant, is dying for more.
google avatar

Jerome D.

Yelp
I am French and I need my regular fix of cheeses. Not the widest choice but all cheeses are of high quality and at the peak of their taste. You can taste them. Fantastic olive oil and condiments also available, as well as locally produced charcuterie.
google avatar

Willard C.

Yelp
Robin is the man and he has good wine at good prices. Good Cheese too!!! And friday night there is no other place to be. Thank God he is there. He makes Callicoon a very civilized place.

Annie W.

Yelp
Sullivan County has entered food heaven with the advent of the new Callicoon Wine Merchant restaurant. The tapas selections are outstanding and so much fun to share with friends. The roasted radishes were a revelation to me and the other imaginative menu items are a joy to sample.

Patricia B.

Yelp
My friends and I stopped by recently and were super impressed by the quality, creativity, and level of presentation at this restaurant. The owner, Robin, not only knows wine and suggests great pairings but also is a tremendous chef. His point of difference is small plates so you can have many different tastes all in one evening. We had the deep fried olives, pot roast, and rabbit...all of which were amazing. Stop by you won't be disappointed.
