Where to Eat in Tokyo According to the Owner of Wise Sons Deli - AFAR

"A Tomigaya (Shibuya) sandwich shop founded by former sushi chefs who spent time in Arizona and obsessively refine their sandwiches. Signature items include a simple, warm tamago omelet sandwich on a squishy buttery bun and a standout prosciutto sandwich with shiso, butter, and yuzu zest on a mini baguette; preparation is thoughtful and meticulous, yielding some of the reviewer’s favorite sandwiches." - Danielle Walsh

Tried camelback last year on my first trip to Japan. Had the egg omelet sandwich and the prosciutto, fresh tomato and rucola sandwich; came back again this year for the same sandwiches 😂 would really like to try the mushroom one tho. I’m from LA so vanilla lattes exist in every corner but it’s not the case for Japan where caramel lattes are the norm instead, so I was so excited that this coffee shop had vanilla lattes!! So good that I got one for the road after too lmfao Staff is super friendly, sweet, and lowkey kinda cute 😂. If you come near opening time, no wait; otherwise be prepared for a line. Would come back again next trip 😂

Nice bread & coffee! 👍🏻 Requested for recommendation and it was a great choice! Crispy bread with cheese and apples... nice & refreshing for morning breakfast. Their Americano was to my liking of dark roasted not light tasted compared to some. There is only some benches seating outside the cafe so you either grab a bench or stand around or take out. Strongly recommend to try!

Google
Very small space, you have to seat in a bench right in front of the shop, but I loved the the sandwich and coffee, service was very good also. Had the Brie cheese, with apple sandwich, never had anything like this before and loved it. Definitely would visit again.

The tamago sando is amazing, the coffee was fine hence 4 stars. You can also only get one tamago sando per drink and they’re microscopic

I needed something savory before heading out so I popped in to get a sandwich. At first I was worried because the bread looks hard but once you bit into it, the crust opened up to a warm, soft center. The egg was also nicely cooked and there was definitely some sort of sauce or other "dressing", adding an additional flavor. The matcha latte I had was okay. Nothing bad but also nothing to write home about. I did find it a little unclear that you needed to order a drink with the sandwich. It wasn't an issue though. The space is small, so expect to wait and if you can't get a seat outside, you'll be taking your order to go. Also, there's quite a bit of smoking which was unpleasant.

I’ve been here many times, and it is always wonderful. The staff is very helpful and speaks English and Japanese. I always order the caramel hot latte and my partner orders a oat milk latte either hot or iced. He says they’re both delicious. Today we ordered the fruit bowl and it was wonderful and fresh and the brie apple baguette sandwich which we’re going to split, it’s enough for 2 people to have a big snack or light meal! Reasonable price is easier to access great hours. Highly recommended!!

The drink was alright, didn’t try the viral egg sandwich. Staff was polite but not so attentive.

Decided to come here last minute as I wanted an egg sandwich. It was quite small but was still tasty. The bread was crispy, and the slight kick from the horseradish was nice. The sweet egg was cold, which made it a confusing sandwich when eating it. Since this was a special item, I also had to order a drink. I got the hot matcha latte, but it was just OK as it tasted a bit diluted. There were a lot of foreigners there and not too much space there, which made it slightly confusing where to order. Thankfully, the staff, who helped me, spoke English well and directed me accordingly. Despite the good service, I would not come back here for the food or drink.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday and it had quite the crowd. This place is often featured in magazines and has gained some popularity. Kind of random, but I noticed there were a lot of Korean patrons cafe-hopping at Camelback. The cafe has an industrial look but also it is quite cozy. My partner said he met the owner once who said he enjoyed hiking/outdoors and got the name from the Camelback Mountain in Arizona. The shop has limited bench seating outdoors, and it seems more like a place where you enjoy your coffee in 15 minutes and leave to make room for other guests. Due to the small space, there is a line that forms outside the cafe and you wait to enter the shop when the barista is ready for you. The barista knows english. Also, there is a different doorway where you pick up your orders. We ordered an ice soy latte (not pictured), iced matcha latte, and the apple and brie sandwich. The sandwich contained honey and prosciutto which complemented the apples and brie perfectly. The apples were sweet and the crisp texture was perfect for summer. The bread is on the harder/sturdier end which kept the sandwich's form well. The matcha latte was strong in a good way and was perfectly sweetened. The coffee's taste was also on-another-level delicious and acidic. I really wished the coffee culture was as good as this back home. Next time, I would like to try the fluffy egg sandwich I saw all of the other guests eating. Looked heavenly.

Yelp
Found this place while walking to get my Pastel de Nata fix at the nearby Nata de Cristiano's. Got a cappuccino and set out on the benches just outside the cafe, to enjoy it with the Natas. Cappuccino was smooth, perfectly textured, and delicious, perfect balance between the espresso and frothed milk. What a great combination with the natas! A bit overpriced but highly recommended, I don't mind paying more for higher quality!

Yelp
I was super surprised to come into CAMELBACK. It really took me back to being in a hipster coffee shop in Silver Lake, CA yet in a quiet neighborhood within Tokyo. Walking up to it, you notice a line out the window. There aren't any tables inside and the shop itself is pretty small. I was also surprised to see the menu in English and what I believe were dollars. I personally loved the modern interior with its rustic yet smooth look. Going in, I saw a number of items but just was in the mood for two items in particular - the salted caramel latte and the egg omelette (tamago) sandwich. The salted caramel latte wasn't overly sweet and had a nice light touch - again reminding me a bit of home while the tamago was the highlight for me. The bread was just right texture-wise, not overly crunch or bland while the tamago had that light wasabi flavoring. It really was one of the best tamagos I've had in the area. I got to talk to the chef as well who lived in Arizona for a bit. Was great to have a fun conversation about the concept of the cafe while also talking about the US a bit. Hope you get to make it out to the US eventually as a cafe in LA. :)

Yelp
One of the most popular sandwich locations in Tokyo, a place where many travelers have on their bucket list to visit, is Camelback Sandwiches & Espresso in the Kamiyamacho area of Shibuya or what people like to call "Oku-Shibuya". The sandwich shop has earned an international reputation for its sandwiches and coffee. Opened up by two best friends since high school, barista Keitaro Suzuki and former sushi chef Hayato Naruse, Hayato wanted to create a sandwich shop in which he creates innovative sandwiches that change in season but also offering wonderful coffee courtesy of Keitaro. For Hayato, he was inspired to create a sandwich shop when he lived in Arizona. In fact, the name of the restaurant is inspired by Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona. I asked Hayato how he came up with the "Camelback Sandwich & Espresso" after working as a sushi chef. Hayato said, "It was my dream since I was 20-years-old. Even when I was training to become a sushi chef, I dreamed of becoming a sandwich maker. I also have a dream that I wanted to have a sandwich shop in the United States." Hayato explained that he lived in Arizona working as a sushi chef for five years and then another five years in Tokyo. I ordered and omelet sandwich and a lamb bacon with dried tomatoes and coriander. Also, a large latte. As for the lamb bacon, Hayato explained to me that he cured and smoked the lamb bacon at the location. While preparing it, I can see on how his slices were and the care that sushi chef's have towards their fish, Hayato is very careful in slicing the meat. Also, using chopsticks to carefully place ingredients. He is also very selective when it comes with ingredients. According to Hayato, what he offers per season are determined on the ingredients that he finds and has access to. I asked Hayato of what people like to order in terms of gourmet sandwiches offered and he said Japanese-flavored sandwiches (a popular sandwich offered around the summertime is his sardine sandwiches using sardines from Tsukiji market) and he said the lamb bacon sandwiches is his signature sandwich. In fact, he asked me where in America can I find lamb bacon sandwiches and personally, I don't ever recall seeing one in America. And that is what Hayato wanted to emphasize, creating unique sandwiches that you wouldn't typically find anywhere else. As for the coffee, Suzuki uses beans straight from Brazil and goes through a professional roastery. Having worked at a famous cafe prior to opening Camelback, he offers nearly a dozen type of coffee and always uses fresh ground coffee beans. And his goal is always to offer a high-quality cup of coffee. The location is known to generate a line and you will often find many people who have traveled to eat at the location. It's not a sit-in restaurant, but more of a stand which you can get your coffee and sandwiches, but there are tables outside. Both coffee and sandwiches are served with care, as both men are committed in producing the best quality of coffee and sandwiches, so expect a little wait. And most importantly, this is not like Subway sandwich, where you can get things quick to serve. Hayato really puts a lot of care in preparing his sandwiches and I really dig that. You can also watch as he prepares it. And both sandwiches are absolutely delicious and the coffee was also wonderful. I know that if I lived nearby, this location would be my go to spot. I dig the overall vibe, customer service and of course, the food and coffee! But seeing how popular Camelback Sandwich & Espresso has become, I wouldn't be surprised if Hayato opens more sandwich shops. May it be in Tokyo, somewhere else in Japan or Asia or even the United States, it has that potential. So, if you are wanting to try one of the best gourmet sandwich places in Tokyo, definitely give Camelback Sandwich & Espresso in Oku-Shibuya a try! I highly recommend it!

Yelp
Oh my goodness! This little guy packed a punch of delight! Oh that I would have indulged in fifty of them were I Jabba the Hutt. My friend and I sought Camelback out as he'd been a couple years prior. Seating is limited to benches outside so beware if it's raining. Have some coffee and take a cool hipster pic against Camelback's cool backdrop. Enjoy! Thanks guys!

Yelp
This place is amazing! The staff are so cool! The day that we went, the employees had all spent time in the states and were eager to chat about their time in the US! I had the Iced Immortal Latte! It was amazingly tasty. I wish I bought two! For a bite to eat, I had the prosciutto, tomato, and arugula sandwich. The tomatoes were so freaking flavorful. The bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was a great sandwich to give me the kickstart to explore Tokyo. There are a few tiny benches outside of the shop, and the street is relatively quiet, so you won't have too much trouble plopping down to enjoy your coffee and sandwich.

Yelp
"I always wanted to be a sandwich man," Hayato, the sando impresario who has a background in sushi, told us while noshing on these diminutive but amazing sandwiches. I knew from the name it was a nod to PHX where the owner lived for a while. I went to this location two days in a row and met passionate food cogniscenti from Munich to Melbourne. We learned there is a second location nearby that has a sardine sandwich that must be had. The prosciutto and ooba (shiso) leaf is a work of profound balance. Art. The famous egg sandwich is nutty good, the contrast of cold tamago with a tinge of wasabi and a warm, fluffy, yet crisply-shelled bun. The coffee is just stupid. That means good. Credit goes to the partner and house kohi-man Kai, who has his own considerable pedigree.

Yelp
Saw a post on IG and decided to see what this place about. It's not the easiest place to get to .. it's not off a major station fr the JR line or subway stop.. but it's not too hard to find ... the area is more local and not too saturated. The place is very small and almost no sitting room except for the two benches outside. I got their egg omelette sandwich and their latte. The sandwich is unique cuz it's crunchy on the outside and egg soft in the inside w some wasabi. It's perfect for a small bite and just perfect. The people who worked their .. I'm thinking the owners are really friendly !!!! They speak perfect English so it was super easy to order :)

Yelp
I ordered Immortal Latte and Tamago sandwich. Both are the best I've ever had. Def. will go back!

Yelp
So here is a place where you must come. They have a coffee machine that exists only four machines in Japan and their coffee beans are so good. I strongly recommend you to come and try their coffee. Most importantly, they can speak English ここは間違いなく来なくてはいけないところですね。日本に4台ほどしかないコーヒーメーカーを持ち、コーヒー豆も凄く美味しいです。お店の方も英語が話せるので、外国の方も多いですよー

Yelp
There's a lot of care and attention to detail going on here. Come for breakfast, have a coffee and a sandwich on the bench outside. Watch the street. Think about life.

Yelp
If you're looking for a sandwich with the perfect crunch in Tokyo, go to CamelBack in Shibuya near Yoyogi Park. It serves the best French bread. The Chai Tea Latte is good, too! There are no seats, except for one, skinny bench in front of the shop. Most people take out. Follow me on Instagram, and Twitter @GenkiGirlNot for more on Japan!
google avatar

Yelp
First of all, these guys deserve 5 stars for being the nicest guys anywhere. Seriously, the service is genuinely friendly and you just want to come back again to chat with them. Fortunately the lattes and sandos make repeat visits worthwhile. The sandwiches are simple but delicious. They're not too big, but they offer a double size at a slight discount. But this is t the kind of place you come to gorge on a massive meal. And the lattes, though a bit pricey, are perfect. There isn't much room to sit - just a bench outside - so plan on taking it to go.

Yelp
Small place. Fits maybe 5-8 people inside. Very friendly staff. DELICIOUS coffee. Had one of the best Chai Tea's here. Highly recommend. Will come back!

Yelp
Nutty, creamy , bold coffee that is located in a small alley. Trully a hidden gem! It is so good that i ordered a second cup. Salted caramel latte and caffe latte. Glad i tried it

Alex F.

Yelp
I got some of my best bites in Tokyo at this tiny coffee bar. Flavorful and creamy latte and the best egg sandwich I've ever had. Employees were friendly and spoke English.

Yelp
My coffee fiend friends loved the coffee. We all fell in love with the sandwiches. Simple, flavorful, balanced. The egg sandwich is a treat with tamago-style egg, baguette, and just a hint of mustard to kick the taste into a higher experience.
