The 19 Essential Sit-Down Mexican Restaurants in LA - Eater LA

"Ulysses Gálvez co-owners Adriana Alvarez and chef Ulysses Gálvez formed the idea of a backyard restaurant after a 2019 trip to Baja California’s Valle de Guadalupe wine country. The result is a popular monthly feast in a lush La Puente backyard. The menu changes regularly, but expect plenty of seafood over a wood fire, cocktails, and excellent table service. Try to nab a table early by signing up on their email list." - Eater Staff

First time coming to this restaurant and was highly impressed with the customer service and food. Staff was very attentive throughout our stay, everyone seems to be working together to have a smooth operation. Now the food! From the salsa with crispy chips down to the menudo and chipotle burrito. Everything was cooked well and was served hot with delicious taste. If your looking for an authentic Mexican flavor, this is the spot to go! Can’t wait to come back and try many of their other dishes.

Camino Real is a small, family-owned Mexican restaurant that serves authentic, delicious food. The carne asada fries are absolutely mouthwatering, and the tacos are always fresh and flavorful. The service is fast, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It’s a great spot for a casual meal, and the prices are very reasonable. A true hidden gem in the LA

This local, family restaurant has been open since the 1980s. They are famous for their Chile Verde. The Chile Verde is honestly amazing & some of the best I've ever had. They have a huge variety of dishes & everything I had was incredible. This place is such a hidden gem & 100% a MUST try! What I Ordered: Chile Verde Nachos, Creamy Chicken Chipotle Burrito, French Toast Slam, Huevos Rancheros, Blueberry Lemonade, Cucumber Limon, Chips & Salsa About the Food: Chile Verde Nachos- You absolutely NEED to get these when you come here. Topped with loads of cheese & Chile Verde, these nachos were a flavor explosion. The meat is seriously melt in your mouth tender. The Chile Verde just soaked right into the chips providing just the most amazing bite. Huevos Rancheros- This dish comes with rice, beans, & served on tortillas. A complete meal in a dish. The eggs on this dish were perfectly cooked. I love how simple yet delicious this dish is. All the components pair so perfectly with one another. Creamy Chicken Chipotle Burrito- This burrito is stuffed with chicken, rice, onions, cilantro, & topped with creamy chipotle sauce. The chicken was super moist and tender. I love how generous the portions were as well. French Toast Slam- In addition to their Mexican dishes, they serve American breakfast dishes as well which includes the French Toast Slam. It comes with 4 toast halves, 2 eggs, 2 sausages, & 2 pieces of bacon. I absolutely love this French toast & it's some of the best I've ever had. Each piece was filled with delicious cinnamon flavor & the perfect level of sweet. I could not get over how much I loved this dish! Drinks- Both of the drinks we got super incredibly yummy & freshly prepared. I loved the cucumber limon as it was super refreshing & light. The blueberry lemonade was the perfect level of sweet & had a delicious fruity taste. Overall, I loved all the food I ordered & was surprised by how amazing everything was. I can't wait to come back to try more of the menu. This will definitely be one of my new go to restaurants! Don't miss out & make sure to check this place out! IG: @kristys.kravings

Look at the board outside by the entrance. You will find the specials of the day. Shrimp was on the menu 7 different dishes. Can I say shrimp enchilladas red sauce were one of the best I have ever had. Homemade from scratch. See for yourself this was my personal experience. There homemade soups are also homemade 😋 🍽

I recently dined at Camino Real, and it was a thoroughly disappointing experience. The service was mediocre at best; nothing stood out as particularly good or bad. However, the food was simply terrible. The chilaquiles were bland and unappetizing, with the salsa verde being sour and lacking any real flavor. The rice was hard and dry, making it quite unpleasant to eat. The huevos rancheros were particularly disappointing, as they did not resemble the authentic dish I was expecting and tasted awful. To make matters worse, the restaurant played old Spanish music that was melancholic and added to the dismal atmosphere. Overall, I would not recommend Camino Real. This was my first and last visit.

Try the Menudo. I think only your grandma can top it. The Carne asada tacos , taste like real ranchero carne asada tacos. The menudo comes with homemade corn tortillas.

Google
This place has SUCH good food. I had the beef taquito plate and my husband had the al pastor burrito. Everything came out super hot and the meat was so moist and tasted awesome. The inside of the restaurant is cute and we had great service while we were there.

What more could you ask for food was delicious I would give 10 stars if I could

Yelp
So, my first time back since the change of new ownership. The restaurant itself still looks the same, a significant change in the menu, but luckily, they kept one of the original waitress The food looked good and tasted good, slightly above average, rice a bit on the dry side, I miss the old signature green pork chili verde salsa, I miss my soft beef tacos, which was a soft and moist corn tortilla, wrap around a small bundle of shredded beef, with onions, cilantro and a dab of guac, all wrapped in paper, then foil, now replaced with street tacos, we don't need street tacos, you can get street tacos from the street, at any block you pass. Also missing from the menu is the Chipotle cream chicken burrito, will miss that one for sure. I miss the old ownership and all my favorite waitresses. I will come back once more, to try the special nachos with meat, and if it's just average in taste, then most likely, I will be changing my customer status from, go to Mexican restaurant, to an occasional visit!

Yelp
Been coming to this spot since high school, C/O 2001 . My favorite has been what they're known for, the Chile verde. I personally get it in the nachos and they always give big chunks of pork in that great green salsa they make. Have tried it in burritos as well and its delicious. Not too salty or overly spicy and always have good servings. Had the green chilaquiles recently and they were pretty solid. The beans were a little off that day but usually pretty good. The house salsa was missing some salt but still had some good flavor. Service is usually pretty fast and restaurant is pretty clean. Also tried the caldo de pollo and the veggies were fresh and the broth was clean.

Yelp
Great food and great service. I had the steak nachos and my kid has the crunchy French toast. We both left very happy! Staff was very helpful and nice. Definitely highly recommended!

Food is always so delicious and authentic the green chilaquiles are to die for as well ! This place deserves more than 5 stars

Yelp
Chilaquiles ,with eggs and steak . Daughter said there delicious. I had asada wet burrito with mild green sauce cause I'm a coward lol. But wow sauce was very flavorful, and burrito so good and big .
google avatar

Yelp
I've been looking for a place that has a wet burrito. This place does not disappoint. The ladies were so nice to me, they brought out some chips & salsa while I wait for my food. I ordered a wet chicken burrito with verde sauce. Delicious! I can't wait till I go back to try other items on their menu.

Yelp
I was craving chiliquilles and this location popped up in my search. The server, Isabel, was delightful. She perfected my order and provided the best suggestions. It's a good portion and I was able to share it with my dad. I know I will be back for the green version!! I dug in so quickly I wasn't able to take a pic. I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
I got to try out many mexican dishes that were all very tasty to eat! Having friends to join me in this incredible meal, the best dish here was hands down their nachos, which the staff mentioned was a customer favorite! The meat in the dish was so soft and tender, we just kept grabbing for more as we bite with a nice crunch. Adding their salsa on top with the other dishes? Chef's kiss. They also provided us their new dish, the french toast, and got to say the dish was superb. The staff here was super friendly and we felt comfortable and satisfied at our stay here.

Yelp

Yelp
This place is amazing! I found this place through my friends Instagram stories and the nachos caught my eye! They even have soup which was a plus because I'm obsessed with chicken soup in Mexican restaurants. We got seated right away on a Sunday lunch, they have outside patio seating as well. Parking is super easy since they are in a plaza. My boyfriend and I ordered the chicken soup, chicken nachos, and chorizo con huevos. We didn't wait long for our food and everything came out the same time. The chicken soup was pretty good just a bit salty but I like how they added green beans and the chicken was super moist and soft. My boyfriend's chorizo con huevos was alright it was just a bit dry but not bad because it wasn't greasy or oily at all and we prefer that. But the beans was a wow factor here! We both loved the beans it was so good! And flavorful. Lastly the chicken nachos was AMAZING! There was enough amount of cheese melted in ever bite of tortilla chips. They are super generous with the cheese and the chicken. I was kinda hesitant that they said they also topped with Chile verde so I asked for it on the side. But turns out it was freaking delicious and best Chile verde I ever tried! It is not over salty and it paid really well with the nachos. Overall I'm really satisfy with everything here! When I eat Mexican food i usually get a super greasy feeling but this did not and I would for sure come back!! Price is super affordable and service is nice!!

Yelp
Chorizo and egg breakfast fire. Menudo so delicious. Thank you to our server for his excellent attention to detail and his pleasant smile. I can't wait to go back not only for the food but the service.

Yelp
I had the original nachos. They pour on the chile verde and puerco bits. The pork was super tender. I like the flavor of the verde sauce a lot! I loved the melty cheese too. Only issue is the chile verde sauce is so thin and liquidy that it's hard to get nice scoopfuls of salsa because it all settles at the bottom and makes the chips soggy.
google avatar

Ken B.

Yelp
If you love traditional Mexican food and friendly service look no further than Camino Real restaurant. The enchiladas, tacos, rice and beans, and the chips and salsa (freshly made) are delicious.
google avatar

Tammy T.

Yelp
The pork chile verde here is a must get! I tried it with a burrito and on nachos. It is amazingly flavorful, juicy, and delicious. The nachos here are extra saucy (sort of like chilaquiles) so you really have to eat it fresh. This a great family-owned, neighborhood joint. They also had outdoor seating and plenty of parking.
google avatar

Angel F.

Yelp
Haven't been here since the new ownership. This is for the new owners. This place was known for there Chile Verde. How can you come in and change what made this place. Let the cooks do what they know. Not what you think you know. You went as far as even changing the beans. Come on.....

Yelp
First of all, I really wanted to love this place since I've been seeing it on social media and craving to try their food for a while. I originally tried to order food last weekend but because I called 10 min before 8pm they told me they couldn't take my order since they close at 8 (understandable). So I finally got to try them today. We ordered the Chile verde nachos, carne asada burrito and carne asada torta. Chile verde nachos: I was so excited to try these out but they felt short of what I expected. When i got home with my order they were super soggy tortilla chips and absolutely no Chile verde salsa left on them. I'm thinking the chips soaked them up.... or maybe the nachos were meant to be that soggy.... I just thought nachos were supposed to be crunchy. Mind you when I put the order they said in 15 min it would be ready and I arrived in 10 min, paid then left home which I only live about 2-3 min drive away. Idk I just assumed they would have had more salsa on them and chips not as soggy. Maybe I needed to ask for everything separately or it should be done in that way. HOWEVER, I do want to mention that the pork was tender and tasted good. Carne Asada Burrito: My issue with this was that it was basically a bean burrito with a little bit of meat and almost no cilantro/onion and no rice. I felt like I was just having a bean burrito. The plus side to this is that it was a decent size. Carne Asada torta: The torta too had a lot of beans to it and not much meat. Unfortunately I didn't get to take a pic of this one. I spent about $30 for all three items and kind of expected a bit more. I really wanted to love this place. I will consider trying their food again but maybe will do their breakfast instead.

Yelp
Chile verde is the best !!! And the handmade tortilla's delicious!! Highly recommended

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food right next to a gas station?Hmm,kinda iffy judging it just from the thought of it but I will give this place the benefit of the doubt. So lets start off with one of the items that put this Casa on the radar. The creamy chipotle burrito, moist shredded chicken with spanish rice swaddled in a flour tortilla smothered with a generous portion of chipotle sauce, yep they sure got this down to a tee. Next I tried their flautas or better yet a taquito on a steroid trip. The flauta was light and crispy but for some reason the chicken was a little dry inside and i didn't like the fact that the guacamole and the sour cream both were not homemade and tasted store bought. To finish up things I ordered a small plate of sopes.Once again the beans tasted like they were out of a can and the carne asada on top was just to over seasoned for my taste buds.In the end,I had a couple of misses and one hit.So stick with burritos. The server was really nice and always checked on me,I'll give this place and her that.On the flip side,I don't think it's cool when there is transients around the corner bothering customers and the owners are aware and turn a blind eye to avoid confrontation. That's my take on the Casa Camino Real,Peace out

Yelp
Words can not express how Thankful we are to have such a wonderful restaurant in our neighborhood. Adriana an her family went above an beyond to give my husband a delicious 6' burrito for his 50th bday. The burrito was so good, all the ingredients were fresh, had great flavor and plentiful. It feed 12 people to the brim! Plus left overs for tomorrow. We feel so blessed, as they couldnt have been more accommodating to make exactly what we wanted. Next time your craving mexican food please give them a try, they will become your go to forever!

Yelp
Tried to give this place another chance since they changed ownership, to take my grandma out for lunch big mistake we didnt even stay to order, the waitress was extremely rude to my grandma yelled at her even I just told my grandma lets go somewhere else.. with service like that its no wonder they had no customers at 12pm on a Friday afternoon. Such a disappointment to the restaurant my family and I enjoyed so much. It may have the same name but thats all it is at this point.
google avatar

M J.

Yelp
Not surprised but they ran out of menudo on a sunday. So my back up dish was ok. I really had my heart sat on something else. Horchata was really good and the tortillas de harina were nice and soft.

Ray C.

Yelp
The menudo is excellent! I visit the restaurant every week to have their menudo. I would recto anyone who enjoys a good bowel of menudo.
google avatar

Mona F.

Yelp
Enjoyed breakfast with my husband and son. Camino Real was recommended by Facebook and let me tell you I'm glad I came. The staff was very friendly they have outdoor seating and the food OMG is delicious I believe we found our breakfast spot. I had the Huevos Rancheros. Thank you Camino Real
google avatar

Chelsea M.

Yelp
I was craving menudo. My sister-in-law's family has been coming to Camino Real Restaurant for years. My mom tried their menudo and said it's the best she ever had. So with my craving, we headed there to pickup menudo which was perfect for a cold winter's night. OMG! This is the best menudo I've ever had! It's full of tripe - well-clean and cooked to tender perfection. The broth is amazing! So much flavor that I could have the broth and be a happy camper. Most menudo is full of hominy. I like hominy but want more than that when I eat menudo. This one had just the right amount to be filling but not overbearing. It was so good, I came back the next week to get more. It was still good but it a little on the salty side. I should have taken more thought in the other Yelp reviews to order this on the weekends versus the weekdays. The first time I ordered it, it was a Sunday evening. The second time was a Monday evening. Lesson learned, but if the craving hits me, I will gladly order it on a weekday just to satiate my taste buds. Yes, it's that good!

Becky R.

Yelp
poor service waitress are rude we got our chip ate all didn't get any thing to drink never come back rude rude helping other people didnt come for awhile rude ladies. doesn't even deserve one star. Really charged me 11dollars for 2 sprites, ice tea, and a small coffee not worth it
google avatar

Annabel R.

Yelp
By far the best menudo I've ever tasted. They make it fresh every morning and only sold on the weekends. It comes with freshly cut cilantro, onions, and your choice of flour or corn tortillas. I always get mine with extra hominy. So yummy!
google avatar

Rock R.

Yelp
Great food. Usually happy with this place. All the orders I've place are usually correct. Everything I've eaten from here is delicious, and would order again. Sundays late afternoon seems to be a challenging time for the older lady who works by herself. You can see in her face she's overwhelmed but trying her best. So I've learned to order anytime except Sunday late afternoon. There is a 50% chance your order will be incorrect. But like I mentioned, the food is so good I really don't mind.
google avatar

Ennie R.

Yelp
Been coming here for more than 30 years. Wife celebrate her birthday here every year and again today. Thanks Jessie for great foods, best service, and treating us like family. The best of luck to you all.

Yelp
We love Camino Real! Love the traditional Mexican dishes! The green chilaquiles were paired with beans & rice....so good! Our boy can't wait to go back for more french toast! We love there is something for everyone!

Yelp
We stopped here for dinner on the way home last night. We were immediately greeted with a warm smile and the pleasant aroma of authentic Mexican food cooking. We were seated immediately and offered chips and two different types of salsa - red and green/chile verde. The chile verde is deliciously tangy, slightly spicy and made with just the right amount of pork bits to give it amazing flavor. My GF ordered the chile verde, which is chunky pieces of fork-tender pork meat in the green chile sauce. A couple pieces were a bit fatty, but overall, it was nicely executed. I had the chile relleno and steak. The chile relleno was fresh and generously stuffed with oozing, cheesy goodness. It had just the right amount of spice to make it enjoyable and yet still heat up my taste buds. The steak was a nice cut of skirt. It was cooked medium, and is perfectly paired with the red salsa that the chips are served with. And the rice and beans, you ask? Delicious! We will definitely be back for breakfast to try the chilaquiles and menudo.

Yelp
Camino Real Restaurant recently catered our school's Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week luncheon! The catering staff that arrived on-site to setup the food and to pick-up the chafing dishes were exemplary! They were very friendly, helpful, and informative. All of the teachers and staff LOVED the food and said that "the food was delicious" and it was "the best burritos they have ever had!" I highly recommend Camino Real Restaurant! Thank you so much for catering our event! We truly appreciate your help in making our luncheon an amazing experience!

Lety P.

Yelp
I ordered the steak picado burrito and it was like my mamas! Tasty with bell peppers and onions and not spicy. The chips and salsa were the best. Green salsa is the same as the sauce in the Chile verde burritos. Robust flavors of grilled garlic tomatoes and Chile.

Victor L.

Yelp
Our first time here and we we're attended by Isabel and was great from the time we walked in. She gave us good recommendations on the food selections. My fiancé and mother-in-law are very critical on eating out especially on Mexican food. But this time they liked this restaurant. This is a diamond in a rough. Great food selection, great service and great price.
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
The green salsa is the best!! We really have enjoyed all the goodies we have gotten from Camino Real. We were introduced to them by our school when they donated chips and salsa for our parent volunteers for our school's celebration of learning. The chops and salsa were a hit and everyone was talking about the green salsa. We couldn't get enough. Great staff too.

Yelp
Favorite Mexican restaurant in town! Good amazing, drinks AMAZING. Alejandro doesn't run out of ideas and always brings new things and interesting things to try!

Yelp
Randomly found this place on Yelp while on our way to the zoo. Food was delicious. I had the Shrimp mojo de ajo. Shrimped was cooked perfectly and tasted great. We also had the Chile Reno and my kids had a Chorizo burritos. Very friendly service. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
I was looking for a quick place to eat between house showings in the area. I took my client to Camino Real and had killer food and a great experience. This is a great family owned place with an authentic taste. If you are in the neighborhood stop by and have a great meal
google avatar

Araceli R.

Yelp
Best salsa verde asada wet burrito in town , the enchiladas suizas de queso verde are also delicious with chile Pasilla on top . So good , great place . Great service .
google avatar

Linda B.

Yelp
The best Mexican comfort foods in the SGV. Tastes homemade! I will miss working close to here.

Lexi B.

Yelp
The food was good , I had chilaquiles w beans . The beans were can which was a bummer but they're good . The horchata was great !! The service was good .
google avatar

Connie O.

Yelp
I really wanted to give this restaurant another try from the first time. Maybe take out from here is not the best choice. So these 3 star review is because of takeout. I do not recommend it because the food gets to you soggy. If you really want go to the restaurant and dine in perhaps, it may be better than takeout. I order the nachos and it was super soggy. Not sure if it was because the food was hot but the guacamole was black like when you eat it and the next day turns black.
google avatar

Mary A.

Yelp
This is a small quaint place that has authentic Mexican food. The chips and salsa are amazing because the salsa verde is the Best!!! Almost anything you order here is delicious and I have never been disappointed. They accept cards but they charge.50 which I think is dumb. Seriously, asking customers to pay to pay you is silly. The customer service overall is good. I go often because of the food.

Guelmy G.

Yelp
Camino Real the the greatest tacos dorados, I always ask for tacos dorados de deshebrada, their burrito mojado is sooo good, huge portions, awesome price, great customer service. You have to try their menudo, micheladas...every time I go I try to try something different.
google avatar

Marii S.

Yelp
I went there yesterday and I asked for a asada burritos but instead they gave me a bean burrito
google avatar

Monica R.

Yelp
I grew up coming here since i was about 6 years old. This definitely has a some of the best wet burritos i have ever had. Anytime we have a pot luck at work i am always asked to order the 6ft burrito and let me tell you its always the first thing to go! the staff here are amazing and very family oriented.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
They have the best menudo in town! Plus, they're green salsa is so good. This is a great authentic Mexican food place if you're looking for one.

Daniel H.

Yelp
This place is amazing. If you want authentic Mexican food this is the place. My favorite dish are the nachos and the burrito. Also can't forget the Chile Verde!!' The staff and Adriana are super friendly. Top notch! Can't wait to go back!!
