25 Coffee Shops to Visit Before You Die

"Steffan Wunderink runs a truly one-of-a-kind cafe, if you can call it that. The “Campfire Barista” makes cafe-quality coffees, teas, and more over an open fire that he drags behind a snowmobile through a forest in the far northern reaches of Finland. It’s not just any forest, though. The forest belongs to his wife’s grandfather, Kaarle Raekallio. The Finnish state gave his family the forest after they lost their home during World War II. After spending decades raising the forest to be processed as timber, however, Raekallio decided to put the trees up for adoption and allow tourists to come spend time with the now dozens of trees on the property. It’s now known as Finland’s Hugging Tree Forest. It was while working as a guide in this forest, serving tourists campfire lattes, that Wunderink became the Campfire Barista. He developed a reputation around town for crafting wondrously smoky, espresso-based drinks and turning a local oddity called chaga—an antioxidant-rich mushroom that grows on birch trees—into chai lattes, all over an open fire. After a woman from the local tourism office complained about having to trek into the woods every day for her espressos, the C.F.B. bought a snowmobile and built a sled that could safely hold a fire grill. The cafe was now mobile, but as his caffeine empire refined, he needed beans that could better harness the flavor of the smoke. After asking around town for a source of organic, fair-trade coffee, he found a friend with ties to a single-estate, biodynamic coffee farm in Tamil Nadu, India. If it sounds too good to be true, the same friend also happened to operate a solar-powered coffee roaster out of a converted sea-container in town. Working directly with Wunderink, this well-found friend was able to roast beans to perfectly suit the flavor of an open fire. During winter months, you can catch Wunderink’s cafe in front of the tourism office in the center of town, in his family’s forest, or at a number of public events. Without snow in the warmer months, he’s restricted to stationary events and festivals. His menu has expanded beyond espresso-based drinks and chaga chai to selling white jasmine tea, organic rooibos tea, warm blackcurrant juice, lingonberry marshmallows you can roast over his fire, lingonberry cookies from his wife’s recipe, and chocolate dunkers—lumps of chocolate on a stick for children to dunk into hot water for hot chocolate.  You may not think you’re ready for parenthood, but no one’s ever ready. Adopt a tree in Northern Finland, and you’ll know what to do when you visit. And when you visit, there’s sure to be a smoky latte waiting for you." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

One of the highlights of our trip! The homemade marshmallows made by the owners wife are AMAZING, we especially loved the blueberry. The owner was so nice and chatted with us a little while he was making our chai (which was also amazing)! I highly recommend stopping by for a treat!

Campfire Barista is a kind of a "street food stall" making fresh coffee, Gloegi hot drink etc. over wooden fire. They also offer homemade berry marshmallows, which were super tasty. We liked it as it's so traditional and cute. We had a chat with the owner who is good in English and German. He explained that his wife is collection berries for the marshmallows in the woods and that its homemade. It's a must-do in Levi!

Coffee and chai latte were amazing. It was great hearing from Stefan about his story and the locally sourced products! We felt very welcomed :))

The name speaks for itself! I'd love to give this place 6 stars. Unfortunately, it's not an option. Coffee is good. Cookies are awesomely delicious! I'll go back and try the sausages as well 🔥

Cutest little stall with great coffee and little treats! The owner is super lovely and you can even toast the homemade marshmallows over the fire yourself! We had to come back both days of our trip

Loved meeting the campfire barista, the coffee was fantastic, vegan options available too. Hot berry juice and hot chocolate also an option for non cofee drinkers. The Chai latte with a shot of espresso (Dirty chaga-chai) is simple wonderful. Homemade cookies and marshmallows also available. If you are visiting Levi its an experience not to be missed. The coffee sled was just over the road from Zero Point. Lovely chatting to Steffan too. Thank you for a fantastic experience.

Best coffee in Levi and a great experience to sit by a fire after being on the slopes and have a hot drink and grill sausages. Allowed me to take a kuksa and return rather than use a landfill cup which I really appreciated when I got takeaway the second day. Friendly and multilingual service too!

Stefan is great, he makes a great chai forest latte. He prepares his own mix, does everything in front of you. He speaks several languages, he gives the clients a nice welcome, and good talk too. It's a must if you're coming to Levi. He opens even when it is very cold (until -25). So nice meeting you, Stefan!

Yelp
We were driving around Lapland when my sister yells "It's the Campfire Barista! Pull over!!" My brother and I were like what?? We saw this cute guy making coffee on a sled and we venture on it. As we were waiting in line someone walking by yells "the best coffee in town!" even the locals know what's good. We meet the wonderful campfire barista who sits out in the freezing cold, literally -13 degrees no thank you, making coffee all day. We got the Chaga chai made from chaga mushrooms found in Finland. It was so delicious! He has a variety of milks and treats, even vegan treats! He provides wonderful conversation while he makes your coffee. It's so cool to watch him make the coffee over his fire and connect over the warm beverage. We visited him every day we were in Lapland to get some chaga chai! If I was a local it would be the only place I'd get coffee.
