All together the meal was fine. Nothing stood out as exceptional, the tart being the closest. The restaurant itself is very nice and clean. Worth eating at if you are already in the area, but not worth a trip from afar. Environment: Seating is broken up between Several rooms It is loud, but not obnoxiously so. Bathrooms are simple, clean, and nice. We were Immediately sat, but waited 20 minutes before someone came to get our drink order. We were given zero explanations or context for any other the dishes or their ingredients. That was the first sign that this was not actually fine dining. Second was that there was some Vacuuming going on during service. It seemed like odd timing as we got seated over an hour after first seating. Meal: There was No screen or strainer in the herbal tea, my wife had to pick out the loose leaves from her cup. The Mushy pea toast- bread was toasted perfectly, good smokiness of the bacon. Avocado shrimp salad Creamy and flavorful. None of the herbs were over powering which was nice, because I don’t particularly like dill. Duck confit- crispy skin, the carrots were very fresh and sweet, the saffron rice was good as well. Very simple dish, nothing outstanding about it, but well put together. Vinaigrette salad with the same bitter greens from the shrimp salad. I didn’t eat this, as I had enough from the prior salad. Chocolate tart- sweet and a touch bitter. Very good. Crunchy crumbly tart with creamy liquid chocolate and whipped cream. Worth eating at if you are already in the area, but not worth a trip from afar.

Gave this a first try as we were looking for a place to do a private party. Nothing special technique wise... just a simple roast lamb dinner that was executed ok. The asparagus was easily the best dish and was excited for more dishes but unfortunately that was the highlight. The pea soup was...pea soup. The lamb was decent, little to no jus and under seasoned and was accompanied with 1/3 cup of not great mashed potatoes. The 'lovely leaves salad' was 5 leaves of barely dressed lettuce...I get the ingredients should speak for themselves but at $100 a plate it was not very impressive... like the previous 2 dishes. The dessert was very pretty. I am not a big fan of unsweetened 'whipped cream' so it was not really my thing. Of note we did have a child with us and the menu given was one plate of about 3 ounces of buttered pasta. Super awkward moment when they served the adults dessert and nothing for the child...like really awkward... I was quite embarrassed for the restaurant. Unfortunately a one and done.

Amazing meal and dining experience. We had the prix fixe Valentines Meal, and it exceeded our expectations. Can’t wait to go back.

Friendly, very professional, I especially liked the table arrangement of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

Highly recommend this restaurant. This was a wonderful experience for our family. We had a 3 and 1 year old and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. Both the quality and presentation of the food were unique. We will definitely be going back.

Friends invited me to join them for Sunday Brunch, called Sunday Dinner at Canal House, and I'm glad they did. It was a very good meal and the service was excellent. Seating options indoors, outdoors on patio, or a limited number of tables on an outside balcony, which is where we ate. In the photos you'll see the Sunday Dinner menu and each of the courses with exception of the Chevre Croustades, which I forgot to photograph as I was too busy eating them! The menu is fixed price and while I'm told there are sometimes options for the main, today's menu and courses were as shown. All the courses were very good, the salmon was perfectly prepared, and the service was spot on. When dishes were brought to the table, two or three wait staff assured everyone was served at exactly the same time. The team approach to servicing the table is something I always appreciate.

What can I say? This place has blown us away not once, but twice! 🌟 The food here is excellent quality, and it's clear they take their craft seriously. The atmosphere and their attention to details are so unique; they add a special touch to the whole experience. What really sets this place apart, though, is the staff—they're super dedicated and make you feel right at home. We're already thinking about when we can make the trip from NYC again! 😄

Google
The ambiance, the food, the people- Everything was just perfect! The food is incredibly comforting at a high level of execution. One of the best duck preparations we have ever had and a dessert with a surprise inside (ahhh I didn’t take a picture). There is one small minus, I wish this place would of been closer but is definitely worth the trip from NYC!

My husband and I had the lunar dinner experience at Canal house. Food was great and setting was lovely.

Yelp
Do not come to this restaurant for a special occasion, or if you expect competent and effective front of house. We've been here a few times for special occasions, and after getting totally screwed out of a special 20th wedding anniversary reservation we reserved, will never go back. I called Friday night and made a reservation for a Sunday dinner at 5pm. The person asked if it was a special occasion, I said yes and explained. She took my number so they could call and confirm. After not receiving a call, Sunday afternoon I called and left a message. We arrived on time and were told they did not have a reservation for us in the system. The hostess said they were full and could not accommodate us. I asked her to find the person I spoke to, and that she would be able to confirm it. She went and checked the system and said our reservation did not exist, sorry. I stood there embarrassed with a bottle of expensive wine I brought specifically for our occasion, unsure what to do next. With such an incompetent, ineffective person who seemed unable and unwilling to make it right, I left and went to a local restaurant that was able to immediate accommodate us, where the service is great, and the food is consistently better. We are former returning customers who were trying to build loyalty, who will never be coming back to Canal House Station again. This is no way to treat loyal patrons!

Yelp
This place is horrible! Food is terrible and service is slow! Dont wast your money! Better off going to Micky Ds!

Yelp
This is truly one of the most special places in NJ. Melissa and Christopher are so talented....I am a big fan of their cookbooks and have been following them for years. They purchased the Milford train station and renovated it so beautifully. The artwork and furnishings/lighting is so beautiful. We have been here in the summer, when the garden is plentiful, and today, a cold December early Sunday dinner of braised beef cheeks in Cote du Rhone....a chestnut chocolate cake.....pork terrine and deviled eggs and a beautiful chicory (Castelfranco) salad with other treats....... Bring a nice bottle of French wine and enjoy your life. A really special place with fantastic, seasonal, local food. xo

Yelp
Very few places wow me the way Canal House Station has. We must have driven by this place so many times and never knew it was here. It wasn't until we saw them up for James Beard award that we found out about it. Housed in a train station from an era long gone, the building is so well kept and appointed on the inside. The restaurant is broken up into a couple dining rooms with a large kitchen prep area visible to the public as you enter. We went for lunch. We ordered one of everything on the menu...the Deviled Egg appetizer, Cod and Smoked Whitefish chowder, Green Salad with Vinaigrette and Brie, Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwich, Panko Fish sandwich, Grilled Ham and Gruyere sandwich, and the ice cream dessert. The only item we did not order was the Apple Sausage/Gruyere omelette that was a lunch special. The Deviled Eggs were delicious. Topped with Anchovies (more a pickled anchovy, not the super salty italian style) and smoked salmon. Creamy egg yolk mixture inside a tender egg white, just the right flavors, not too sour, not too salty. The Green Salad was a bed of radicchio and Belgian endive with a light vinaigrette. By itself it would have been a little bland, but it's served with a slice of dark bread with a generous slab of good quality brie cheese. A bite of the greens mixed with a bite of the brie and bread...just about perfect. The cod and smoked whitefish chowder was maybe the best thing we ate. Flaky cod with slightly smoked whitefish made for a good combination with the bacon and chunks of potato in a creamy soup that tasted so light, it was hard to believe it was a chowder. The sandwiches were great. The panko crusted cod sandwich was a nice fillet, the crispy chicken was a boned out thigh in a crispy coating, and the grilled ham and Gruyere was a great nod to the classic hand and cheese melt. The chicken and fish were on brioche buns which were perfect. All the sandwiches came with Deviled Eggs as a side. Even better. The ice cream dessert was amazing, creamy vanilla bean ice cream and a slightly bitter dark chocolate were very complimentary. There was not one unsatisfactory bite in this whole lunch. My only disappointment was that the Country Pate wasnt on the menu for lunch...I was told the menu changes daily...Nice. I would be remiss if I did not mention that the service, table setting, and space inside were top notch. My only suggestion is that the music can be a bit loud if you're near a speaker...but you can turn it down. Here's the kicker...1 of everything on the printed menu....the bill was about $87. Are you kidding me? We had enough food for at least 4 people. We're coming for dinner soon, but if it's anywhere near the lunch experience, this is going to be my favorite place for food. It is BYOB, so bring your own wine/beer/cocktails. If I could give this place 6 stars, I would.

Yelp
Just moved nearby and heard so much about this establishment, thought we would give it a try. What a treat! Beautiful environment, pleasant and attentive service and even better cuisine! We were at the Spanish menu dinner and didn't disappoint! Tastefully prepared prawns to start, excellent gazpacho followed by duck and chorizo paella with peas. Delicious! Next came a salad with blood oranges and olives and ended with Almond cake with buttercream icing! A great meal for a special occasion that you won't forget or regret!

Yelp
Food: Absolutely delicious. I walked in thinking I accidentally walked right into the kitchen however they have a open kitchen sitting area that allows you to be super close to where the cooking action occurs which I think is so mesmerizing and makes the experience all the more amazing! A party of 4, including myself, came here for the brunch option of crispy bacon and endless piles of buttermilk pancakes. The pancakes were absolutely delicious and fluffy! Even though we came for breakfast, we ended up eating some lunch specials too such as the fried chicken on a brioche bun w/ an egg and green salad, and of course dessert too, which was the apple tart! All of the dishes were spectacular and we were already making plans to come back for dinner! Cost: The endless piles of pancake was $13. Very very generous and a great price for the quality you're getting as well. The cost of the other dishes were extremely well priced and I personally thought the quality of the food went above and beyond what you were paying. Environment: Absolutely beautiful open kitchen sitting area. I know they have tables outside and I think further inside the building however I had the pleasure of being able to sit just a couple feet away from all the magic that was happening! Service: Great service, very kind and we never felt like we were being rushed out. Chris and Melissa were very welcoming and Chris came around and checked up on us and enjoyed our 'healthy appetite' haha! Uniqueness: This place is definitely unique. The food is made with love and care here and those feelings definitely gets translated to the food that is served which is all so very delicious! Definitely a place I want to come back for and try out their dinner menu!

Yelp
From the moment you walk in to Canal House Station you feel you're stepping into luxurious simplicity. The clean open kitchen, the thoughtfully decorated dining rooms, well placed flowers and fresh fruit or vegetables arranged to be beautiful all give the feeling that you are leaving the business of your life behind and entering into a space where quality and beauty reign. I've eaten here four meals now, and have enjoyed every visit. The beautiful fresh vegetables, delicious butter, warm bread, fruit tarts, strong coffee and exceptionally friendly and skilled wait staff make this place a vacation from reality. The beautiful garden you pass as you enter reminds you to be grateful for those who grow and make the ingredients that we will enjoy.

Yelp
Been living in the area almost 6 years, and don't know why it took so long to go to this phenomenonal restaurant. The service was classy and professional, and the food was out of this world.

Yelp
This lovingly restored train station has a secret weapon, the two Chef/Owners/Authors and James Beard award winners Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer. A woman owned and operated business earns my respect immediately but once you take a bite of their food, you wonder if you're worthy of the straightforward, uncomplicated, utterly savory meals they put forth. Tapping into a treasure trove of travels, the food and experience whisks you away to Spain, or France or your family table on a Sunday when you were a kid, complete with all of the aromas, flavors and love that come along with that. Highly recommend "Sunday Supper" served from 12-4, currently with a price fixed $68 for five courses, bring a bottle or two and meet friends there and feel time melt away as warmth, laughter and love take over.

Yelp
10 Stars! We made a last minute decision to go to lunch. My daughter and I arrived about 15 minutes early but was seated immediately. As you enter the restaurant, amazing smells waft over you... making our mouths water. We shared the Chicken Soup for our appetizer. That was a huge mistake ... wish we didn't because it was soooo good! Very light, tasty and perfect for a cold winter's day. We also ordered the Fried Chicken on Brioche Bun. A Classic! Probably the best fried chicken sandwich you could have. We had the Gravlax on toast. I love the bread, crunchy and perfect with the lox. For dessert we had all 3 offered. Not that we were hungry but because it all sounded great We had 3 scoops Ice cream -: vanilla and hazelnut. I am obsessed with hazelnut gelato and seriously overdose on it whenever I visit Italy. I think I have a new obsession. That hazelnut ice-cream was just crazy good! Had the Almond Cake with Tangerine also the apple cake Both we loved! If you like almonds, this cake is light with the right hint of almond extract -- not overpowering! The Apple cake was beautiful to look at and eat. It was soft, crunchy on the bottom with apples on top and a hint of salt and lemon When asked how the food was -- our response was 10 stars! I love the fact that at no point we needed extra seasonings! A Perfect lunch!! Cannot wait to try the rest of the menu

Yelp
L-O-V-E this restaurant and all that Christopher and Melissa touch! Superb seasonal fare. Stylish and sophisticated yet understated decor. And a gracious crew! How about opening for private functions, cooking classes, and more?! I'd spend all my time there if we could!

Yelp
Canal House Station is beyond incredible. You cannot get food like this anywhere else. There's so much care and talent gone into the food. every dish always looks beautiful. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Nice ambiance, good service, firiendly, but the dinner did not live up to the hype, especially the entree. Our heirloom tomato & toast was tasty, however, the toast was shoeleather tough - could barely cut it. I was afraid it might go flying off the plate. We were surprised the entree was turkey. It arrived as three or four ~1/4" or so slabs of cold breast. Could have been from any deli! The sauce was just ok. The pesto pasta was good. Desert was nothing special. Not worth $95 per person! In our case $190. (We are good tippers and still left 30% - not the servers' fault.) We could have spent that and had several wonderful meals at many of the great restaurants in the area along either side of the river.

Yelp
Delightful. Such an incredible experience. Smooth service. Incredible food. Lovely atmosphere. tables a little tight if the place is full. probably because the two rooms are small. Wondering what the Frenchtown Inn will become!

Yelp
We had a fabulous experience having Sunday dinner at Canal House Station! The ambiance was elegant and romantic in a beautiful venue! The service was top notch... gracious, attentive, not intrusive. And the food was absolute deliciousness in each bite and the plating and presentation were spectacular! This is a top restaurant anywhere and especially appreciated in New Jersey. We drove an hour to get there and the even the ride through backroads was beautiful! We'll be back! Kudos to owners Christopher and Melissa!

Matt F.

Yelp
Excellent in every way!! Service, presentation, taste & service! Also located in a great town,

Yelp
We dropped in for lunch today. I am not someone who typically does reviews but I feel compelled to give this a rave. The vibe of the restaurant was low-key with a rustic atmosphere/elegance and Beatles music playing in the background. The service was professional and friendly. The food appeared to be simple - it is, in fact, prepared with a deft touch - lovingly prepared and stunning to look at. And it tasted great. The deviled eggs with anchovies and smoked salmon appetizer were "to die for." I asked to take some photos and I felt welcome. We walked into the kitchen to let them know how much we enjoyed it and made to feel welcome. I look forward to returning.

Yelp
This is one of the best kept secrets! I never would have heard about it had we not been staying at the Bridgeton House (B&B across the bridge). The restaurant is beautiful. We made reservations for lunch when we arrived on Friday and for Sunday dinner before heading back home. Both experiences were different, but equally great. Basic ingredients prepared in such a beautiful and delicious way. You also cannot beat the price. We will most definitely be back!

Yelp
Incredible 5 course meal in an artfully decorated, beautiful old train station right on the Delaware. Id only learned of its existence this past week when I saw it in the 2019 James Beard nominations for outstanding restaurant. It was outstanding indeed-- from the friendly staff, to the warm, welcoming inside with freshly picked flowers in each room, to the delicious food. All was wonderful. We hope they win. We visited today for lunch (aka Sunday Dinner). Menu is prix fix-- you don't choose anything. The food tasted especially fresh. Thé chocolate tart was amazing. I thought I'd tasted a hint of bergamot. So delicious!!! We are a bit far from the restaurant, but will certainly be back some day.

Yelp
Food quality still eh.. closed more than every restaurant due to virus locally. I do Ma Dee next door. Back to old roots. Happy to pay $15 for an amazing breakfast but not happening here..keep churning out those "cook books"

Elizabeth P.

Yelp
My birthday dinner yesterday (prix fixe) was one of the best meals I have ever eaten! We spent a leisurely two hours savoring each course (kitchen even sent out complimentary fried zucchini blossoms). It is no surprise that the chef owners have written several cookbooks- they are masters of the craft. This restaurant is in a league of its own in this area of PA/NJ. They offer an exceptional culinary experience in a beautiful historic setting (at a very reasonable price point). We cannot wait to go back!

Wayne Y.

Yelp
This is our favorite place for dinner but today we enjoyed a wonderful lunch in the garden. Highly recommended. I should have taken a few photos. The food is delicious and beautifully presented and served with outstanding friendly service.

Yelp
You cannot get food anywhere close to this within a huge radius. This is the best restaurant in thisnarea by a huge margin.

Yelp
The canal house station was what I was expecting in the sense of getting fresh courses, each spaced out generously. My dining experience was quite long, as expected, so I would go only with lots of time on hand (2+ hours). The restaurant was beautiful, and the drive to it was also nice, passing mostly farming houses and large plots of land. It really gave off the family feel which I love and the workers kept traditional waiting practices which also added to the antique atmosphere. All of the food was great and incredibly fresh tasting. The staff were all so kind and engaging and really helped make the experience special. Overall, I can't really find anything to complain about besides the length of the meal, but I was prepared for waiting so it was no big deal. Would definitely go again if Im in the area, was an overall great experience!

Elle J.

Yelp
From the moment you walk in, you can tell that Canal House Station is thoughtfully designed and meticulously executed concept. The decor (which would become a theme for our entire experience) was minimal yet divine. That's just Melissa and Christopher -- they make the ordinary, extraordinary. Onto the menu. Unable to choose just one, our party of three split five dishes. We ordered the French onion soup, endive salad, homemade pate (who knows how to make that?!), fried chicken sandwich, and the polenta + porchetta. Without giving a detailed review of each item, lets just say that each mouthwatering dish was as tasty as it was visually appealing. We quite literally wanted to lick each dish clean. Bravo Canal House! We'll be back (probably tomorrow)....

Jamie N.

Yelp
On a cold, blustery night, everything about this restaurant was warmth...the atmosphere (we felt like we could have been in New Orleans or a little town in Europe), the impeccable service (so kind and giving), the exquisitely simple food (rich and subtle and delicious)...perfect evening for a date, an old friend or a quiet bite. We absolutely loved the experience and will be back again and again!

Ary M.

Yelp
Absolutely PERFECT! Our Sunday dinner experience was outstanding. My husband and I have been to Le Bernardin, Daniel, Nobu, Jean Georges, and the likes. This little place met our expectations and more!

J B.

Yelp
Can't imagine a more lovely way to spend some time on a weekend for lunch. Excellent food, sourced impeccably, prepared by two of the most talented chefs in the world themselves.

Yelp
CHS is a new addition to the lower Delaware Valley food scene, and what an addition it is! It is the brainchild of Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer, well respected cookbook authors, who decided it was time to put all those outstanding cooking chops to work. It's housed in the beautifully restored Milford Railroad Station. You'll be amazed by the experience. Honest. I mean it.

Yelp
What a breakfast find! Fun re-design of a train depot, open kitchen, and subtle art on the walls -- but better art on the table: Buttermilk pancakes were divine, omelettes savory and light, and toast and (don't laugh) yummy "limequat" compote. Hope to return and see if there's a dinner menu in the works.

Mark D.

Yelp
Wow. What an incredible find. Gourmet food as good as it gets-Kate my waitress for last two visits was attentive and great conversationalist while being very knowledgeable about menu details. Can't wait to try Sunday dinner (reservation/fixed price 12-4). A must visit
