Modern Montrose coffee house great for studying I tried Canary Coffee House’s seasonal shaken piña colada espresso. It was an interesting drink to try but personally would not look to order pineapple and coffee together again. Vibe: Canary has an open interior split into two sides with the counter in the middle. The counter contains a display with sandwiches and pastries while the other half extends out to a bar. The right half is bright with giant windows while the left half is darker. There are plenty of outlet plugs throughout the shop. As a bonus, Canary coffee house connects to a cool art studio / gallery. The barista(s) Calvin are extremely nice and seem to above what they do.

Canary is a special shop with great espresso drinks, wonderful service and incredible croissants. John is a killer barista and Joey, whom I met today, is a very personable and involved owner who has some great vision for the future of the coffee shop. I had an amazing pumpkin latte today that wasn’t too sweet with just the right amount of spice, and one of the best croissants I’ve ever had (and this is tied with ones I had in Paris). Yes they are that good. Friendly service, good parking, Mill-king milk and oat milk alternative (though no coconut). Lovely shop and I hope to be back soon next time I’m in Houston.

Honestly was a little scared to spend some money here after I saw the reviews. However, I had a great experience at the newly branded coffee shop. Last time I was here (maybe 2 years ago), it was still Inversion. The building is still set up mostly the same. The large table at the entrance was taken out and a few smaller tables replaced it. I think the coffee shop is a 4/5 for me but with the building including the Art League Houston, this place is definitely a 5/5 star location. The art exhibits are beautiful and a perfect study break during my long mornings learning about boring differences in lab values. Art is so much cooler! Overall, I like the setup: a long high table with lots of outlets overlooking the busy Montrose street, several small high tables on the opposite side of the room to work alone, and at least 5 smaller tables to work alone. As a place to work or study, this place is perfect. All tables seem to be close enough to an outlet. Also, the two times I've been here recently, it wasn't too busy and easy to find a seat. There's seating outside as well if that's your preference. Wifi is strong and reliable. Workers are nice and wear masks. Only complaint is that the floors could use some work (maybe even just a fresh coat of paint?) but all in all a fun, reliable study spot. Will definitely come back!

First time here and I love it. Atmosphere, coffee and pastries 🥰 The lavender latte was very good. Not overwhelming like some places. Just the right amount. And we had the orange cinny and that was absolutely delicious I want more! 😋

Google
Vibe- Neat coffee shop in Montrose with the art league houston inside the building. There’s plenty of seating outside and inside making this a dope spot to study, work, or just catch up with friends over some coffee and bites to eat by Shakkar , a local croissanterie. Customer service- Great! The gentleman that helped me was kind and helpful with me making my choice for a drink. Food/drinks- I got a hot matcha latte with oat milk. Parking- There’s plenty of spots in the lot to park.

Yelp
Ah! I cannot believe I have not written a review for this amazing Inversion replacement! This is a great place to read, catch up with a friend, have a casual-environment for an interview, or just a coffee break or treat. I also want to thank them for labeling parking and towing areas - don't want expensive surprises! Each time I'm there, the baristas are kind, knowledgeable, and super efficient! I rarely wait for a drink for more than ten minutes. And, they have one stripe chai as well as seasonal drinks, which I MUST try every time. I know I'll be back - Maybe even today.

Yelp
Disclaimer: I'm on a hunt for the best cafe to work from as I'm working remote. My review is based on factors for a good place to work from and not necessarily the coffee or food. Overall AWESOME cafe for work and coffee. Noise level - 60db quiet conversation Wifi speed - 84 down 99 up Power plugs - more than 10 Seats - 30 indoors Parking - free 10 lots The service was great the barista was friendly. my croissant and coffee came within 5 minutes.

Yelp
This was the cutest little coffee stop but what I loved the most was the amazing service and the fact that I asked for my Americano extra hot and got it actually EXTRA hot! Thank. You! THI g worse than getting a tepid coffee when you enjoy it hot. I loved the chill vibes and views while here. Def wanna go back for one of those amazing looking gluten free brownies.

Yelp
Service was amazing there was ample parking spots! Got the normal latte along w cold brew with cold foam. Coffee was a lil bitter so I asked for more milk which they were happy to provide. Lots of seating and not too loud throughout my time there making it a great study spot. Will be back!

Yelp
Great coffee house! I had a bit of work to do and needed somewhere less crowded than Agora - I had a friend suggest Canary since it was down the street from me. Ordered a Hot Vanilla Latte right off the bat. Good vanilla bean vibes, espresso was more tart than I prefer but I'm a sweet tooth and an ex-barista so I'm picky. Great drink regardless. Wi-Fi was strong, not loud at all even with some other customers having a hang out. The pastry case was about half full in the afternoon but still looked super fresh. I ended up ordering a Rosella Tea and a vegan blueberry muffin, both super great. The muffin was honestly a 7.8/10 itself. Both the venue and bathrooms were clean too. Will be coming back!

Yelp
Partnering with Shakkar Croissanterie for brownie & biscoff croissant cubes, yes please! I could swear this place was recently something else, and I won't lie- I only came by to get my hands on a few of their pastries, but I was pleasantly surprised with what I found when I arrived. Although there's no outdoor space (unless you consider one table outdoor space), there is plenty of natural light. If you're early enough to nab one of their croissants, croissant cubes or one of those little chocolate chip cookies, you're in for a much better day! Parking is fine, the coffee is aight & the service is good, but unlike many similar coffee shops, it's quiet & those pastries are worth the early morning trip. Your sweet tooth will thank you.

Yelp
The coffee was decent, I don't normally get cold brew, but I really liked theirs topped with some sweet cold cream. I liked that the barista brought over my coffee and pastries I ordered. It really made me feel like the service was going above and beyond. The space was a little small and industrial, but would be a good place to get some work done during the work day. Assuming it doesn't get too loud. I was there early on a Sunday morning, so I had no issues parking. But the lot is small, so be warned if coming at a peak time. Overall, would recommend, especially if you want a snack with your coffee!

Yelp
This is a nice coffee place to study. They have multiple plugs in the area, so don't worry if you're running out of batteries! In terms of the drinks, I enjoyed the flat white. The design is pretty, and it tastes to my liking. The matcha did not really taste matcha-enough. I wish there was more matcha flavor than milk. The setting of this cafe is nice, and there is huge & free parking. The cafe is also linked with a museum, which sounds cool and unusual to see from a cafe. I would like to visit again and check out the other drinks and mini museum next time! Overall, I rate my experience a 8/10.

Yelp
Not sure why the previous coffee shop closed, but this one is nice too! My friend and I stopped in for some to-go treats. I had an almond milk latte with almond syrup, my friend had their Mexican Mocha, and we also ordered a Cortado with nonfat milk. The almond syrup addition to the almond milk latte was nice - it was like a boosted version of the traditional almond milk latte. The Mexican Mocha was decent, although my friend probably wouldn't order it next time around. Nothing against the coffee shop, just wasn't favorable to his taste buds. The Cortado had a cute design on top. Inside the shop, there's lots of natural light and even a food truck outside. I'd come by again.

Yelp
Coffee is mid, pastries are delish! Love the twice baked almond croissant. Plenty of parking, lots of tables and work space inside. Workers are friendly! Decent option for a quick coffee and morning bite. It's located in a tough corner of montrose though with lots of excellent coffee shops neighboring it, so I don't find myself coming here as frequently.

Yelp
Love the vibes in here! Great ambience! One of the best places for coffee and pastries! Dedicated parking available! Service is always great and with a smile! This is a must come location when I'm in the area. I have to try out all the other pastries they have to offer here. But the coffee is just made right every single time for me! Love that consistency! Wife loves the mocha!

Yelp
Quite little spot that makes for a great day of co -working. I loved my matcha latte and was able to take a break between meetings to enjoy art down the hallway.

Yelp
Canary is a great coffee place! My favorite place to work at. Nice indie music and the volume isn't too loud if you need to get on a work call. Plenty of outlets, and have never had to wait for a spot to sit. The barista even complimented my outfit! Muffins are great and have a sugary crust on top that is very tasty!! Good price, good coffee, great atmosphere. A very underrated Montrose coffee shop!

Yelp
when i first moved to the area i tried every local coffee shop by me. Canary stood out most because of barista calvin. i had always anticipated what to order at other places but now am always confident to try new things thanks to calvin! there was a time he made me 4 different drinks because i didn't like the one i originally ordered.. so patient and kind he recommended different beverages with no problem!! i am now a regular stopping in 2-3 times a week to visit and try new things. atmosphere is always calm and never too packed (a big check for my visits) today, we try an oat milk cappuccino (pic shown)

Yelp
This little coffee house is a bundle of contradictions. Delicious baked goods and one of the best almond croissants I've had in a while, but the coffee was nothing to write home about. Then there's the service--which was nice enough--compared to the décor/vibe of the place which felt like an empty concrete box. It lacked the warmth that you'd expect from an indie coffee place or any real sense of personality. Maybe I was spoiled from having just gone to the Dear Diary Coffeehouse in East Austin the day before. I'll give Canary Montrose another try, at the very least for their baked goods. It's a shame because they are walking distance from the Airbnb I'm staying in and I was hoping to find a regular spot while visiting.

Yelp
(All pastries are made by https://shakkar.co/) Croissant, however you prefer to pronounce it, is a golden flaky bundle of buttery happiness to me. On our continuous quest to try different Croissants offered in Houston, Vanessa found in her French forum a new spot that we haven't tried. When we reach the cafe, it's where the old Inversion Coffee & Art used to be, right across the since relocated LES BA'GET. Right in the heart of Montrose, there's a diversity and coolness that are unique in this special part of Houston. We both love the high-ceiling opened-space do the architecture and bask in the chill vibe of the atmosphere. Once we order, we pick a small table near the entrance that has beautiful light shining in from all sides. Vanessa takes a bite from the Plain Butter Croissant and exclaims that it's one of the best she ever tasted in Houston, and I trust her opinion as she grew up in Paris, plus I too, am impressed by it. The Twice Baked Almond Croissant has Almond Paste that has the right sweetness, which is rare in Houston and goes well with the Cappuccino and Chai Latte. The Espresso used is Ethiopian Guji from Hambella Woreda. We decide to also try their cold Caprese Baguette that looks deceptively simple but enjoyable nonetheless. We find ourselves usually preferring the simpler food that has quality ingredients and is executed well. For a short time of timelessness, we just be here now, with nothing to pursue, nowhere to rush, a luxurious pleasure we appreciate and don't take for granted.

Yelp
Great place to work if you WFH. Very clean with cool music playing. The baristas were kind and attentive although I asked for a latte "for here" and was given a to go cup. The espresso is bold and the latte was smooth. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
The slightly better replacement for Inversion. The employees no longer give off the vibe that they actively hate their job and customers, and the drink menu has finally expanded beyond just the basics. Hopefully the positive trend continues, because it's a shame to waste such a central location. BTW, parking still sucks.

Yelp
Amazing barista, very nice and very informative on the product and details of each pastry. He paired my choice of laminated dough with my drink. Canary had regatón music playing, has it's own parking lot. There's is a pastry company @shakkarhtx who shares the location with canary. Pastry chefs are working along side with baristas in the same building. Both compliment each other. Pastries are very fresh. Atmosphere very calm and friendly. Great to get work and meetings done.

Yelp
Both my wife and I love this place. The coffee is great and the place has a nice artsy vibe to it. The people working here are super-friendly and eager to help out. The pastries are to die for! We keep coming back for the double baked almond croissant, which often sells out early in the day. Love this place!

Yelp
Nice replacement for the former Inversion space. Yummy pastries and great selection of drinks

Jazmine C.

Yelp
I came here at around 10:30 am and there were plenty of empty tables and seats, which is rare to find around this time! The outlet situation is pretty awesome too. A little cold inside on a sunny 80 degree day, so bring a jacket just in case! I ordered their gluten free banana bread (delicious) and a vanilla flat white (can't go wrong) in the cutest blue mug set! Up until 3 pm, I've seen a steady flow of customers but it remained very calm and still many tables available the entire time. 10/10 recommend for students! The cashier was very friendly and a barista brought my order to my table! Will definitely be back to try their other menu items! The only points I would deduct would be due to my subjective music taste; they did play very Pop/Dance-ish music which isn't my ideal vibe at 10:30 am, but to some it may be -- props to keeping it at a good volume, not loud/distracting at all!

Natalia G.

Yelp
came here for a matcha date with some girlfriends. I used to love coming here when it was Inversion so was excited to check out the new cafe. It was pretty empty on a weekday morning. Matcha was ok, vibes were good. I would come back and try their coffee drinks. I also felt like it was reasonably priced compared to alternatives in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Great place to meet a friend for coffee. The croissant was really good. Flaky and crisp buttery, sweet layers. The latte was not only beautiful but tasted really good. The service was quick and friendly. Cute place with easy parking.
google avatar

Yelp
I had no idea Pecan Pie Croissants were missing from my life until visiting this little spot after seeing the food porn on the Shakkar Croissant Instagram. Oh my gosh - it was absolutely delicious! The pecan pie filling was amazing - and I wouldn't have thought to pair it with a meringue on top but it was such a nice touch! The cappuccino was also a nice compliment - my only wish would be there would be larger cappuccino cups, haha! Great spot - can't wait to go back!

Kiante W.

Yelp
The pastries were amazing. The service was great as well but, my friend and I got two completely different things (Matcha latte & Green Tea) and they both tasted and smelled like they used fish water. We asked to remake it and she was nice about it but I think it was the water they used.
google avatar

Hannah G.

Yelp
I was a little surprised when I saw the poor reviews for this place. It not a bad place to grab a coffee and pastry at! All pastries are made in house and very good. I had a spinach and artichoke pastry and it was great. Coffee is good as well, and they also sell coffee beans as well. There's a good amount of seating inside, most of it is bar stool style. There is some seating outside, although it is a bit more limited.
google avatar

Debra O.

Yelp
Tepid coffee. Can not heat pastries. Scone was gummy and cold. Cup lid looked like it had dried brown residue on it. I told the counter staff it was stale her response was to tell me to put it in the trash can.
google avatar

Ronnie R.

Yelp
The place smells great when you first walk in. Really good croissants and I love the lattes

Htown G.

Yelp
I liked everything about this place. The coffee was made with care and attention. it tasted good. Not overpowering but balanced like a good cup of coffee should be. The atmosphere is just right. not too loud and not too quiet. Easy parking also helps in this part of town

Yelp
Didn't have anything they had posted on their Instagram. And the coffee tasted like garbage and not to mention the building smelt like a restroom inside.. not good I won't be back

Mike B.

Yelp
This morning while walking my dog and wishing a coffee was near I walked past this shop. I had to Google what it was because the signage isn't clear, but was thrilled to find out that it's a coffee shop! I live across the street and usually go down to The Mercantile, which isn't close, so I thought I possibly found a hidden gem. Gone are the days of customer service however, and I'll never know if their coffee is good because I wasn't able to try it and won't be back to do so. There are 2 ways to let a customer know not to bring their 2 lb. puppy, who they are holding, into the shop: 1. While they are next in line to order you stop helping your current customer to ask the customer who's holding the dog to leave from across the room, embarrassing them and making them feel bad (poor customer service- insuring no business and bad review), or: 2. Offer some welcoming options to gain business by taking care of the customer while staying within compliance in regards to the dog. Seems like an expensive location for a small business to choose option 1. I'll keep making the trek to Mercantile. Perhaps when this place closes, I'll try the next business who moves in and hope they care enough to promote good customer service.
google avatar

Traci Z.

Yelp
Cashier was quiet, timid, and curt leading to poor customer service. No atmosphere to speak of. This location is lacking all the kindness, warmth, and comfort of the original location.
google avatar

Jess P.

Yelp
I really want to like this place. It's so close to my apartment, the staff is chill and genuinely polite, and it's the only coffee shop in Houston I've found so far that isn't a dark cave. But the coffee has been hit or miss, pastries have been dry and bland, and the WiFi is crap. I really just wanted the WiFi to work.
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to work remote! Their service is excellent, quick, and the baristas are super friendly. The food menu is limited to pastries, but everything they serve is delicious. I'd describe the atmosphere as minimalist and lowkey. Wi-Fi is always on point and parking is never an issue. Canary's a great place to focus and crank out some work.

Echo S.

Yelp
This place has the vibe of a coffee shop that's about to go out of business. Croissant was good, coffee wasn't great. It's a real bummer in there.
