For overall food quality and experience Candela came out slightly above Restaurant Zum Goldenen Schäfli. It was very close though. The service at Schafli was definitely better, as the service at Candela was not consistent. I think some of the staff liked our dog, while others snubbed us for her. Although, there were 3 other dogs in the restaurant as well. One staff member even offered to bring out water for our pup. The restaurant space is open, modern, with hints of romantic night out. Definitely book in advance as all the tables were booked, and they were turning many people away. The menu offers veggie, meat, and fish options. They also have a nice wine selection to choose from.
While the reviews for this place lean heavily towards the strength of there meat, we ordered completely opposite items. For starters, I chose the scallops and my husband the beef carpaccio. The scallops melted in my mouth, and are the best scallops I have had next to the scallops at my favourite Seafood restaurant Seastar back home in Seattle, WA. My husbands carpaccio was also an artistic masterpiece, and tasted as divine as it looked.
Next, I ordered the veggie risotto and my husband ordered a fish fillet. It's hard to get good fish in Switzerland, and is a good test of a restaurant. The fish was perfect, and the risotto amazing.
We weren't originally going to get dessert, but had seen people getting this iced coffee drink that looked amazing. We spoke to the server about the desserts and she said the house maid iced coffee was a favourite, so we tried it. It's definitely not to be missed.
Overall a wonderful dinning experience, and if you only had one dinner in St. Gallen, I would recommend this place.
