How 3 Remarkable Black Winemakers in the Bay Area are Paving a New Path

"Stanford graduate and Sonoma County-based winemaker Chris Christensen is a man of many talents. Between performing voice impressions and quoting Shakespeare from memory, he’s expanding the world of wine as we know it. He originally earned fame as the first U.S. producer to bottle sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, but eleven years later his bold risk taking continues to define Bodkin Wines." - Ali Wunderman

Could not recommend this place more. Truly the best experience if you want to taste genuinely fantastic wine. It's a small independent winery that doesn't have the big commercial element of other places. However, we found it one of the best. Chriss was such an amazing host. Talked us through their wine making processes as we tasted about 6 different wines while answering all our questions. We had the best time. Thank you.

Google
Best winery in Sonoma. Small mom & pop type winery on just 20 acres. Personable, Chriss gave a wonderful wine tasting experience. Be sure to book in advance, reservation required. Their 2017 Pinot Noir was my favorite. My friends enjoyed there Syrah's too. Thank you Chriss!!

Google
Great wines and the tasting experience was great. Great interaction with Bill who is the owner of the winery. Small winery, not the typical big winery experience. Would highly recommend.

Roger Carrillo

Google
Small owner operated winery that makes great Sonoma Valley Syrah, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Make an appointment and buy some wine.

Anita Romanini

Private tour with the prestigious winemaker Alexandra. Her knowledge of wine coupled with her wry sense of humor made for a memorable experience.

We found this gem last year. We were so happy to be able to return again. Not a wine you want to miss.

Small winery owned by Bill who is lovely and would explain everything! Just remember to call first to make an appointment.

Yelp
If you're looking for a very personal wine tasting experience, look no further than Canihan Wines. There's no huge wine tasting room and tastings here are by appointment only. To start, you're guided to the vineyards and get to sample grapes straight from the vines. Then you're led to a barn to do your tasting. They're pretty generous with the pours and it's such a cool ambiance. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for something more private and intimate.

Yelp
An hour before our reservation time was scheduled at Canihan we needed to grab a spot to eat our picnic. Amanda and Kenny welcomed us with open arms and allowed us to eat at the property in the barn. We enjoyed rosé while we ate and then jumped right into our tasting. It was a beautiful experience. They were both so kind and we felt like we were surrounded by family. This is a MUST on your next Sonoma trip! Cheers and thank you for an amazing afternoon!

Yelp
INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE! Clean wine, amazing grounds. 10/10 would recommend this place. We went to about 6 different tastings/vineyards...this one is the best. Very personable and genuine.

Yelp
Of all the wine tastings I've been on, this was my favorite. Chriss taught my wife and I so much about wine, was so down to earth and wonderful, and the wine was great. I'm so glad we came here.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of visiting Canihan over the last weekend in June on my birthday. Bill is inspiring, first generation wine maker and his wines are delicious. It was a warm breezy day and we sat out on the picnic table overlooking the vines. Our wine shipment just arrived at our house yesterday but we will definitely be saving his wines for a special occasion. Thank you to Bill for taking time out of your day. We have been raving about our visit with you.

Yelp
Bill is incredibly knowledgable with wine, but he's also quite approachable and engaging, making the overall tasting experience so much fun. I went to his winery with group of 12 girls for my sister's Bachelorette party and could not have been more pleased. The wine was delicious (Pinots were especially good, potentially the best rosé of my life, great Syrah at the end), and the views around his property were stunning. All of the girls were pleased, and I could not have imagined a better end to our day of wine tasting. Also, the costs were extremely reasonable! I think this is a must for anyone going to Sonoma. Thanks for a fabulous day Bill & team!

Yelp
Wonderful, organic, dry farmed wines! We had the pleasure of enjoying a tasting with Bill Canihan while some friends were visiting from out of town. We nearly drove past the place because it's just a small gravel driveway without any big signs, we felt like we were pulling up to someone's charming wine country home (I think we technically were since they live on the property). Bill did all the pouring himself and talked to us about his wines and farming methods. We were lucky enough to be there during harvest so some of the vines were still heavy with fruit, he walked us down the rows and picked a couple bunches grapes for us to try, it was all quite fantastic. We left with amazing wine (2013 pino, yum!) and big smiles.

Yelp
Bill makes high end top shelf Pinot Noir look easy. His wines are only available in a few places. But search him online and you'll see he's well respected and has own plenty of blind tastings. I'm aware of at least twice when he's beat out more than a thousand wines in blind tastings. $40 average bottle price. Worth every penny. Two years ago he beat Relentless at $200 a bottle in a well respected judged event. Syrah and Pinot mostly. Although rumor has it Viognier too. His wine club is really the only way to get his wine in any number.
