Yelp
Cannibale Royale was another restaurant on our shortlist for Amsterdam - in our pre-gaming, we were intrigued by its bare-knuckle, provocative vibe. It also came highly rated. It's right off the Singel Canal - one of the earliest canals in the city. I think we'd consider it an alleyway, but it appears to be a proper street on Handboogstraat 17a. Because it was day one - we rolled the dice on a walk-in, but we highly recommend making a reservation. It's also a great walk - with a few colorful squares nearby (like the Spui).
Staff was friendly and accommodating - we were able to sit at the bar, preferable as we wanted to imbibe. We started off with two cocktails - the Penicillin and the Cannibale Corpse. We typically start off with a Penicillin in a new land - the citrus and ginger are very much wanted at that point in the trip. The Cannibale Corpse tasted of the standard recipe, with its layers of gin, prosecco, lemon and pear brandy.
We dived right into entrees, since we were starving after a long day of exploring the city. A must for ASG in Amsterdam on that first day is to get a steak. There's something about the sensibilities of the city and steaks - I don't know if there is anything like it, but for New York City. Didn't want to go overboard, so went for the L'incroyable - the Rib Eye, which I believe was aged. As a side, we opted for the Pork Belly and Pickle - as, if you follow us on Instagram (@allstreetsourmand) we've been on a pickling kick for some time. So, as you can see from our photos of the visit - well-cut, well-cooked meat abounds, surrounded by equally well-made pickling. A side of corn on the cob to round out the meal - and (wink) have our vegetables. The pickling were white onions steeped in red vinegar - simple, delicious. The green dill was just as you would want and a great compliment to the pork belly (and the steak).
The steak, as you'll find throughout the city is effortlessly prepared to perfection. It's as if there is a collective understanding of how best prepare steak - and we always look forward to it.
We also opted for Le Classique - a burger from Black Angus, local cheddar, sautéed onions, tomato, mustard mayonnaise, and thick bacon. All of this was served on a thick bun - it was a meal on its own. The burger could be more well-balanced - the meat felt a bit overpowered by the rest of the condiments. All of the components were delicious - but perhaps dialing down the bun and the sauce would bring the burger to the fore.
The ambiance was great - it felt like Amsterdam. There were wood accents, and the lights were reminiscent of candles. It made us feel like we were in the latter half of the 1800s as they designed. There was an air of mystery and a bit of intrigue.
All told, we love Cannibale Royale for delivering on all fronts. We highly recommend a visit next time you're in Amsterdam.
