Mourning the Food Workers Who Lost Their Lives to COVID-19 | Eater

"A two-year-old Mount Pleasant restaurant that had just begun turning a profit before the pandemic, then pivoted quickly to strong to-go sales and survived thanks in part to a Paycheck Protection Program loan. Leadership kept the business afloat and rehired most staff, but the establishment also became a site of the era’s tensions — from fights over mask-wearing with customers to the tragic loss of a dedicated general manager who fell ill after enforcing safety measures and ultimately died." - Jenny G. Zhang

We recently had our wedding welcome party here and couldn't reccomend Cantina 76 more! Marty and his team went above and beyond. They made the planning process as easy as possible and we're extremely accommodating and made all of our requests happen. The option to have an indoor/outdoor event was really important to us and the Cantina patio worked perfectly for this. All of our guests raved about the quality of the food and staff's service as well.

Google
Absolutely love coming here! The staff is amazing and so friendly, especially Bekah! Also the manager Chris really made us feel at home and taken care of. I just loved the food and will definitely be coming back again and again! Definitely recommend trying their taco specials! I haven’t been disappointed yet. They are always coming up with the best flavor combinations. 10/10

Google
Cantina is amazing!!! I come here all the time!! The salsa is my favorite app. All the bartenders and servers are amazing. Jess and Kaela are phenomenal and know their stuff!!! The management team really cares about the restaurant and the customers experience. Highly highly recommend.

Google
As mother of the groom, I enjoyed the Welcome party at your restaurant so much! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was great. The staff was so helpful and worked non-stop to make sure that all of us had a great time. The evening was a great beginning of the wedding activities and we appreciate all you so much.

Google
Good food, great staff, outstanding customer service. Everyone I’ve interacted with at this location is fantastic, the bartenders are always friendly and pretty quick, and our favorite server Bekah always brightens my day and keeps us coming back. (Not that we’ve ever had poor service there, she’s just a ray of sunshine)

Google
The food was AMAZING, and the drinks were so yummy. Three of us split the margarita tower, and it was the perfect amount! We can’t wait to come back🤩

Google
Live in the area and come here all the time. Great staff and food. Good rotating beer selection and choice of tequilas and other liquors. Bekah was my last bartender/server and she was awesome!

Google
I was here for a wedding party, and it was great! My only complaint about the food is I was too busy getting drinks and hanging out to go back and try more. Service was exceptional. They were so helpful and even made sure that we didn’t leave any personal items or clothing behind.

Yelp
You are a Mexican restaurant and you don't offer chips and salsa for the table gratis - It makes me question the experience and be more critical. I was recently in Mexico City where they took pride in the crafted salsas and chips offered. It is also a standard. I'll stop being fixated on this. The service was fine, but nothing special. Eager at first to take our order while our two couples looked at the menu. After we were served our meals, we didn't really see him until the bill, and we would have had more drinks. We all had different tacos for dinner. I search the world for great tacos with quests that have taken me across Texas, California and Mexico. The tacos were very flavorful with nicely crafted sauces. The fish tacos with roasted poblano tartar sauce was very well done. The blackened shrimp tacos with cotija cheese, pico de gallo, and lime crema was good, but the shrimp weren't blackened and only 3 shrimp left me wanting more. Cantina left me wanting more. The value component is the challenge - $5.50 for one taco is more than you pay in many places (not comparing to a very average) for a small portion. I don't know if I would rush back to Cantina 76.

Yelp
Great food and better drinks. Awesome atmosphere! Would highly recommend! Marty was great, I'll be back

Yelp
This is for Sarah the bartender that worked on cinco de mayo at night. You did amazing!! It was really busy and was able to make my pitcher of the Pama quick! You did an amazing job and definitely will be coming back just to see you!

Yelp
I visited for a quick lunch break with a friend while out Christmas shopping. For a Friday afternoon, it wasn't busy and we were seated promptly. There was plenty on the menu to choose from. We started with the Trio Sampler which included guac, salsa, and queso. Each of them were tasty. For our main dish, we ordered tacos and chicken tortilla soup because it was one of the coldest day of the year. The tacos are reasonably priced and you can mix and match as you choose. The soup was perfect for the day and warmed us up inside. We left full and satisfied. The place is very large and roomy. They have a nice size bar area and an equally large patio area, which I'm sure is hopping during the warmer months. The hostess, waitress, and manager were all very nice and attentive. They came over often to check on us and made sure we had what we needed. Parking is in the rear and it is plentiful. I'm looking forward to dining here again in the near future.

Yelp
The food was so great! Peruvian shrimp taco was 100% the way to go! We also had margaritas and they were pretty good and strong. Our server was nice! I will say, the bathrooms were pretty hot and gross. I would definitely come back, but probably would not want to go to the restroom.
google avatar

Yelp
Tacos were good sized and a lot of different options. A nice relaxing spot to grab a quick bite. Our waiter was very helpful in deciding on drinks and which tacos he recommended. Service was quick. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick bite. We were going to just get an app but since we decided to get chips and salsa, we changed our mind and got tacos. I got the bbq pulled pork which had a sweet chipotle type bbq. The flavors were great and the pico was an amazing touch. However the surf and turf taco was awesome. The shrimp was coated in a sweet chili sauce and the flavors all blended perfectly. I would get again in a second. Both myself and my sister loved the strawberry basil margarita. It was very refreshing. There was only one other table there besides us. Our server was attentive and sweet. She also offered many suggestions. Can't wait to go back and try more options. They also have a lot for gluten free folks and it's all appropriately labeled.

Yelp
We picked this mexican food place at random. It was a kind of undecorated not appealing bar and restaurant. Noticed every item was ala cart; no sides or additions. Suprised even the traditional chips and salsa were not free. Free refills on chips, but the salsa was perhaps only 4-5 ounces. It was very good and tasty. We first ordered margaritas. They both tasted like like watery lime flavor without the flavor of tequila. These were very disappointing. I ordered 2 tacos; Cod and blacken shrimp. My wife the taco salad. I enjoyed the Cod taco. The shrimp didn't taste blacken or very good. It seemed very bland. The salad was also kind of bland and not especially outstanding. It was close to closing time on a Sunday. This may have affected what we got. The server was both pleasant and very efficient. I would not recommend this resteraunt. Taco Bell was next door....

J G.

Yelp
Tacos were $5 each for tiny ones. Ordered 5 and left hungry. For $25, I could have eaten at a nice restaurant and left full. Beef Nachos were $11 but where's the beef? It was more like dressing over expensive chips and jalapeno.

Yelp
Food is amazing, drinks are on point and our server Avery was on top of it. I tried 4 different tocos and each one was unique and delicious. Avery did an amazing job with suggestions and continued to make sure we had everything we needed. I only ordered two tacos at first but could help ordering another two to try. Definitely a must try!

Yelp
This was an unexpected find our first time in the area from the outside of the building. It didn't look like much, but the food is excellent. Everything felt like it was made right then for us very fresh, the guacamole was pure avocado with cilantro, and something else it was just great. The tacos are delicious they're just the right size. Great prices . Oh and ask for Sunni- sweet waitress and the manager Carson came over too The ingredients are incredible. The choices are amazing, we just think it's the best we've had anywhere. They make their salsa and guacamole every morning

Yelp
My family came here on our vacation (it was a 5 minute walk from our Airbnb), but unfortunately I was not impressed. The Tres Hombres (salsa, queso, guac) was definitely the best thing we got. However, the chips were hit or miss. Some had a crunch, but others were quite chewy. I ordered The Jalapeño Margarita and it was not at all spicy. I got the Blackened Shrimp Taco and Fried Chicken Taco. They were ok, but not much flavor even with their variety of sauces and topping.

Laurel H.

Yelp
Fun decor, service was fine. Menu was limited. They were out of 1 of the specials and it was only 5:30. Fish taco was cold in the middle. Shrimp taco was lukewarm. Salsa was awesome but not enough to redeem the rest of the meal.

Lauri C.

Yelp
The wait was far longer than the promised "few minutes". Once inside they seemed unaware that they had paged us. They seemed severely understaffed. The food, once it arrived after a long wait was very good. It's a good value but the atmosphere and service leave a lot to de desired.

Yelp
I had surprise takeout brought to me so I didn't get to check the place out or even choose my own menu items. I remember when it was The Americano and it was pretty damn cool so I'm guessing it's only been improved upon. After trying the food, I'm definitely looking forward to coming in for the full experience. The tacos are far from traditional street tacos or even tex mex. I would compare them more to the unique combinations that taco boy offers. Of the three I had, I think the Chicken Teriyaki with feta was my favorite. Followed by the buffalo chicken, and then the Traditional. We also shared the quesadilla which would easily be a meal on its own. It was stuffed with chicken, cheese, and pico plus had BBQ sauce which was surprising but tasty.

Yelp
Solid place. I really enjoyed the appearance and vibe of the restaurant. If it's not too hot, sitting outside is nice. The food was outstanding, as well as the service. They had a margarita deal going on, and a special on the tacos that I got. Would definitely go back. Only complaint was that the floor was pretty gross and there were crumbs and food everywhere.

Yelp
Love Jennifer at the bar. She takes really good care of you and is always smiling. That being said the whole staff rocks. The food is always great never had a problem. They have wonderful specials all the time. Love the bar area and the seating area. Great outdoor space. Has DJ, trivia, singers. A great place to go.
google avatar

Meg C.

Yelp
I feel bad they always seem to be mostly empty inside but the food is great! Their menu is also fairly large for whatever your looking for. The interior is very cute, sometimes a bit cold though. I actually prefer to sit outside even if its on a busy road. Their spicy margs are great and I always go for the burritos. Great portions you never leave still hungry. I definitly like this place better than Santis and Taco Boy for sure. The staff are nice and fairly on top of it. They have a bar as well. A small gravel parking lot is just behind the restaurant in between the venue and Parrot's Skate Shop.

Yelp
After falling in love with the Cantina of Columbia, I was beyond excited to see this one when visiting SC this weekend for a wedding. To begin, check out the variety of margaritas. There is truly something for every flavor palette but my personal favs are the strawberry basil and prickly pear. Next, the apps. You can't go wrong with the trio sampler of fresh salsa, guac and queso. Their guac is one of my favorites - but the salsa is also sneaky fav that would be overlooked at most other places. Finally, the tacos. Oh the tacos. There are tons of options ranging from $3-$4.50 each, along with rotating speciality ones. I recommend getting two, three if you're very hungry and not getting an app. I've never had a bad option but I tend to always include at least one Peruvian shrimp. The ingredients are always fresh and the sauces are unique and delicious.

Yelp
A huge difference from the previous owners! Cantina 76 is a spot you can't pass up. The people here are friendly, attentive and interested in your opinion. I ordered three, different tacos that were all full of flavor with every bite. The surf and turf came with a very tender steak and crispy shrimp that was excellent. Another was their Peruvian shrimp taco with these sweet and crispy shrimp and cole slaw. Perfect. The third was their traditional taco. It's better than most. We also asked for some fresh guacamole with chips. The chips are plentiful and warmed. A nice touch. They offer local beer as well as the common commercial ones. It's a full bar here. A welcomed addition to Coleman Boulevard.

Yelp
Cantina76 is an excellent spot for Mexican cuisine. Martha treated us like old friends. She is polite and professional. The food was delicious and promptly served. A Gentleman stopped by to tell us about the different drinks choices. I can't remember which Mimosa I ordered. It had FRESH MINT!!! Yummy! Sherry ordered the black beans soup. She said, " the soup is a meal by itself!". We will be back. For more great service and food!

Ella C.

Yelp
Carmen was our waiter. She was awesome!!! Such and great restaurant, great food, and great employees! We got our food within 5 minutes after ordering.

Yelp
Had a great experience at Cantina 76. We sat outside near a space heater and enjoyed the restaurant week menu. Despite the restaurant being busy, we received our orders quickly. Between my husband and I, we ordered the Peruvian shrimp taco, Buffalo chicken taco, brisket taco, queso, guacamole , margarita, and cheesecake chimichanga. The standout taco was the Peruvian shrimp taco. Also thought the margarita was awesome. I would return!

Yelp
My roommate and I stopped here one day because it looked so cute on the outside, plus who doesn't love Mexican! We started with the Tres Hombres Sampler, choosing Guac, Salsa, and Queso. They were all delicious! We both got different types of Chicken and Shrimp Tacos, which were all amazing! The waitress was nice and checked on us often. The restaurant was so cute inside and out which great music playing! I hope to come back again soon

Yelp
Went over to Cantina 76 last night for Tacoooo Tuuuesdayyyy! We sat indoors at a booth in a chill, retro-themed environment. The outdoor seating looked pretty cool as well and probably the place to sit when the weather is right! We started off with a Dos Equis on draft and a Prickly Pear Margarita. I highly recommend trying the Margarita if you're feeling a cocktail. For appetizers, we got two orders of corn poppers - garnished with tiny peppers and chipotle. All 6 tacos we ordered were appetizing and very filling. My favorite were definitely the Peruvian Shrimp and Jalapeño shrimp tacos. I also got tacos with steak that were decent but I don't think I would order them if I came back. The service was PHENOMENAL and our orders came out swiftly! Other notes: - parking is hassle-free, convenient. - architecture of building is pretty cool. - bathrooms are well lit, private, and clean.

Yelp
I went to cantina 76 to celebrate a birthday party on a Thursday night. They have a large parking lot in the back but it was packed and had to wait a bit for Someone to leave. One of my friends ended up parking on the street because the lot was full. We were 8 people in our party and got a table fairly fast. The decorations are nice, but for some reason the place was extremely noisy. I had to speak very load and could barely hear the people in front of me , so it was not very easy to have a conversation, it was not even background music, but random chatter from other tables. Weird acoustics I guess? We started with the "tres hombres" appetizer which is chips and salsa/guac/ queso. The queso and guac were good, the salsa was meh. I kind of get annoyed when chips and salsa are not free, but that is a rant for another review. For food I had one buffalo chicken taco and one green enchilada. Non of them were impressive. The green salsa had too much cilantro and it overpowered the whole dish. The taco came on a store bought flour tortilla.. i am of the mind that everything is better in a taco and i love to try non traditional toppings, but probably should have gone for a different one. The margaritas were good i had the strawberry one and I was able to choose my tequila, which probably doesn't make the difference when all you can taste is the added sugar. Lol . I'm not dying to go back and probably won't . Full disclosure: I grew up in Mexico and I am very critical of bad Mexican food, just because I can.

Yelp
Came to Cantina 76 for Trivia with my Husband and Brother and we had a great time. We ordered a few margaritas to start and the Queso and Guacamole which were very good. We ordered the Teriyaki Chicken, BBQ Brisket, Fish and Peruvian Shrimp Tacos. All of the tacos were very tasty.
google avatar

Yelp
Easy going new-age Mexican fusion restaurant. Casual dinning with a nice happy hour that changes daily. I got the queso, salsa, guac and chips to start, which is nice to fill up on chips before any main course. It's kinda my thing at Mexican restaurants. A nice selection of unique fresh style tacos. The place does remind of Mex1 in West Ashley or a smaller Taco Boy. The service was fast and friendly at the bar. The place has a great outdoor space for seating and watching the traffic go by. If you miss the turn-off, you may end up at Taco Bell next door. This must be the Mexican food district in Mt P. (Parking around back)

Yelp
My wife and I have wanted to try this place for awhile and finally went last night with some friends. Friday's they have $2.50 corona. Almost all of us had tacos and also we got chips and salsa as a starter. The food was really good, I thought their corn tortillas were really good. The brisket taco was phenomenal! My wife got chicken teriyaki (highly recommend). The chicken pesto left a lot to be desired. The smoked pork was a solid choice though! The tacos are decently stuffed. I have a moderate-to-large appetite and the 3 tacos definitely weren't enough. If you get the chicken tacos just know that the chicken is one singular piece, didn't bother me much but my wife who eats tiny bites (not unlike a child) was not a fan. Covid: they have a hand sanitizer station at the hostess stand. All the employees wore masks and they sanitized between guests. Terrific job Service was good - nothing glaring and nothing superb. Overall, we enjoyed it and will definitely be back. (Lost one star for charging for chips and salsa. Sorry, that's always my standard for Mexican restaurants!)

Yelp
Cantina 76 seemed like the perfect spot for a late lunch with my cousin. The place was pretty dead. The decor inside is pretty retro. Our waitress was nice and attentive. I ordered an original taco and shrimp taco. My cousin ordered a shrimp and some type of bbq taco. They came out very quickly. One of my was wrong and I had to send it back but the new one came out quickly. The tacos were delicious. I also had a prickly pear margarita which was delicious The prices are great for the food and drinks! There's outdoor seating on the sides of building. They have corn hole set up in the front. I like the Christmas decorations, including a tree and deer on the roof. The parking lot is in the back. It's a little small so I could see it getting packed easily. Coleman Boulevard is so busy so it can be a little difficult to get out of the parking lot.

Yelp
natalie was amazing, amazing service and very easy to talk to. food was amazing! such a cute place!

Yelp
I went to Cantina 76 during Restaurant Week and it was outstanding! We enjoyed chips, guacamole and salsa. The chips were crispy and light-delicious. I had the Shrimp taco and can't remember what the other was. They were both excellent, and the best part was the margarita! I had a margarita with patron and it was delicious. I will definitely return!!

Yelp
Such a free food at affordable places! Always a good fast casual place to go to to get some good Tex mee!

Yelp
As far as the dozens of Mexican joints in Charleston go, Cantina 76 isn't super high up on the list. The chips and salsa were fine but not special. Both of my tacos were good and I would order them again but I wouldn't go out of my way for them. HOWEVER. Service was 5-star. We showed up at 930pm on a Friday night, not knowing that they closed at 10. They told us we were welcome to stay as long as we'd like. Our waiter was Corey and he was super attentive and friendly. My Kentucky mule was only $5, which is worth a repeat visit in my mind. We stayed until about 1030, eating our tacos and drinking our drinks. I'd be back for the drinks and the waitstaff.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
So I've been here a couple times now and really feel that this joint deserves five stars. It has the whole package - great and consistent food and drinks, nice atmosphere, good service, and excellent options for children and pups. Food/Drink - I think Cantina has some of the best Mexican in the area and it's super cheap compared to other options out there. Most of their tacos are in the $3-4 dollar range and I like that they have a number of other items on the menu. I'm not one to deduct points for a place being expensive, but every time I come here I am amazed by how inexpensive it is, so worth noting. I've eaten the buffalo chicken taco, shrimp jalapeño taco, and fried fish taco. I've also had the enchiladas and dip platter. All really good, as are their margaritas. Atmosphere/kids/dogs - this place is a sneaky great spot to bring the kids / pups. The outdoor section is large and they have ample space for the kids to run around and play. I hesitate to write this up, but I think word is starting to spread around town about this perk. In sum, I think Cantina pushes all the right buttons for me, a father of a family of 4, but I would be equally enthusiastic to come here on a date or with friends. This is a new go-to spot for me around town.

Yelp
This place has been here a while, I guess -- but its easy to miss when you drive by. It doesn't stand out or scream out "come and eat here!" That's too bad, because the food is really good! I finally went here with my wife and we each had two tacos (4 different ones in total) and they were all quite tasty. I usually feel bad when I have to pay for chips and salsa, and I felt bad here too... but $3 isn't terrible. But still... La Ha gives you all the chips and salsa you want to eat, for free. That's the only knock against this place. The prices on the tacos are very reasonable... around $3-3.50 each. The flavor is outstanding. I did a three-year-tour in Austin, Texas for work and spent many evenings eating tacos at the world famous Torchy's Tacos. Those were off the charts amazing. These were close... but I need to try the corn tortillas to get a better comparison. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere, good drinks. I had a few tacos but the one I can't recommend enough was the Peruvian Shrimp Taco. Super tasty. The size of the queso they give you for the chips is a little small . If you have more than 3 people I'd recommend two. Other than that everything was great.
google avatar

Daniel J.

Yelp
The Quesadilla was great one of the best I've ever had. The chips and guacamole needs some work and the chips were cold which isn't typical of a Mexican restaurant. Also, called in advance to get the happy hour specials and once I got there the hostess had told me the wrong specials what I wanted was only Monday and Wednesday.
google avatar

Yelp
Started going to Cantina 76 for Team Trivia which so happens to occur on Tuesday nights.. Taco night. What a cool spot right on Coleman Blvd. There is a large outdoor seating area also. It's quite retro and spacious in here and very busy for Trivia. The staff are super helpful and accommodating with our big needy group. You can't beat the prices and the tacos. They are very good. In fact our group ordered a concoction of different menu items and the general consensus was that they are all good. Now, of note, it's not Mexico, the food is Americanized which is fine. It's tasty and fun. Parking is a breeze as they have a big lot at the back of the restaurant. They have beer, margaritas tequilas etc. Lots of TV's. It's actually a great spot to hang out with family & friends. They do charge for chips & salsa. I don't know if that's a post Covid thing or not. Either way it's fine with me. I wish I could remember the name of our server, whom we meet every week. She is just great and makes our night even more enjoyable.
google avatar

Liv A.

Yelp
Unbelievably bad. Fish tacos that were one shredded fried nugget with sliced jalapeños. My family tried this place again after a couple of years thinking it must be better after initial try. It's not. so bad. The management clearly does not care.
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
Great tacos, friendly staff. Feels like a neighborhood joint. Even though it was busy they made me feel welcome. Really loved the tacos
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
Staying at a nearby Air BnB so thought we gave it a try. Does not look like much from the outside, but inside is very nice with a large bar. We tried a few different tacos, fish, smoked pork, brisket, roasted chicken, each was nicely balanced and complex. We particularly liked the smoked pork and roasted chicken. Also the Devine Margarita was just that. This is definitely on our list to return to.
google avatar

Taylor G.

Yelp
Okay, HOLY GUACAMOLE, they do not play with their Guac. Some of the best I've ever had. Soooo fresh and loaded with cilantro (my favorite- thank God it doesn't taste like soap to me). We ordered the taco salad, chimichanga (the size of my head), salsa and guacamole. Everything was delicious and all under $40! Such a great place and conveniently located in Mount Pleasant! Can't wait to go back
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
Pretty good place for mexican food. We had a pickup order and everything was correct and done when they said it would be. Overall would recommend!

VJ K.

Yelp
We picked this place after reading the review. It made our day as the food is really good. My wife had the veggie salad with salsa and lime cilantro dressing. The salsa is to die for!! One of my sons had the chicken nachos and he thought it was the best ever. The tacos are amazing especially the shrimp and chicken ones. Worth the drive if you are in Charleston

Jeffrey A.

Yelp
My family and I stopped in Saturday evening and they were busy but not packed we were sat near other tables that had very attentive wait staff, unfortunately none of them appeared to be assigned to our table. We left after sitting at our table for 10 minutes with all wait staff ignoring us. We won't be back

Shannon C.

Yelp
Food is great and the service is fantastic! Madison always has a warm and welcoming smile.

Yelp
We go here all the time and it is a great spot for food and drinks. Tried just about everything on the menu and haven't been disappointed. The chimichanga and Buffalo chicken tacos are my go-to
