The most exciting new MICHELIN Guide hotels for September 2022

"Born from a very thorough five‑year renovation by its French owners, this once‑abandoned house in a residential part of Porto has become the poetically named Canto de Luz, a luxurious little boutique hotel whose style is decidedly modern yet as warm and welcoming as anything else in town." - Le Guide MICHELIN

"Portugal is positively stuffed with extraordinary hotels, but this one stands out by virtue of its sheer uniqueness: a once-abandoned house in a residential section of Porto, after a very thorough five-year renovation at the hands of its French owners, is now a luxurious little boutique hotel in a style that’s decidedly modern yet as warm and welcoming as anything else in town: the poetically named Canto de Luz." - Tablet Hotels

We had an absolutely amazing stay at Canto De Luz and couldn’t recommend it more. The location was perfect for exploring the city – everything is easily accessible.|Our room was fantastic: huge, beautifully decorated, and incredibly comfortable. The bed deserves a special mention as it was genuinely the comfiest bed we’ve ever slept in. It was cleaned to a good standard every day |Breakfast each morning was delicious, with a great selection and consistently high quality. The staff were outstanding throughout our stay – so friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help. They gave us excellent recommendations for things to do, places to eat, and really helped us make the most of our time in Porto.|We also loved the outdoor pool, which was heated and a lovely place to relax. Overall, this hotel exceeded our expectations in every way, and we would absolutely stay here again. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Porto.

We had a wonderful four-night stay at Canto de Luz and wish we could have stayed longer! All of the staff were incredibly thoughtful and provided plenty of recommendations. The room was comfortable, the breakfasts were delicious, and the hotel was conveniently located in the city. We wished we had done one of the port tastings at the hotel - it looked like fun! Would highly recommend staying at the hotel and would absolutely stay here again.

I couldn't recommend this hotel enough. The only reason not to is fear of missing out next time we're in Porto.||The breakfast was a particular highlight. Every day starts with a different fresh fruit, artisan bread and pastry, alongside optional favourites (yogurt, granola, eggs) and a special (French toast, waffles, omelettes). ||The hotel itself was comfortable, spacious and with great decor. The space includes a garden, heated pool and dining area with an open kitchen (the dining room hosts events too!).||As with anything good, the people play the biggest part. So thank you to all the staff who made our stay so memorable, comfortable and ultimately special.||Matt & Katie

This place is incredible. Our room (urban retreat I) was spacious and clean, also packed to the brim with amenities. The daily breakfast included was absolutely wonderful and the staff are excellent. Everyone on site truly seemed like they were passionate about their work and enjoyed being there. Definitely recommend checking out one of their wine tastings (we opted for the port tasting, as it is in Porto)

Lovely place. When you come through the front door, you’ll be happy to see that everything matches the gorgeous photos online. And the service complements the beauty of the place as well. Zuzanna was such a sweet host. She provided us with recommendations and a to do list for our three day stay. We basically did everything she suggested! My favorite of one of her suggestions is Almada 331 for dinner. Fernando is great there. I also got pretty sick during the trip and she brought tea and ibuprofen up to my room. It was the sweetest and an extremely personable thing to do. And the tea was phenomenal in case you were wondering. The ladies who host and cook for breakfast are also the sweetest and great cooks! I cleaned my plate! You won’t regret staying here. Be back soon, Canto de Luz!

I found Canto de Luz from reading the reviews on TripAdvisor. I am so happy we chose that small boutique hotel. We rented the Urban Retreat 2 Bdr since we were 2 couples traveling together. It was perfect. Our accommodations were so comfortable and clean. The staff were all so nice. They helped secure dinner reservations for us and helped us with all our requests. I also took the cooking class which i thoroughly enjoyed. I apologize, but i did forget the chefs name. She met me at Mercado bolhao and had a custard tart for me. She took me around to the many vendors and shared her knowledge of the market before taking me back to Canto de Luz for our cooking class. It was just the 2 of us. She helped me to prepare several appetizers that i think i could recreate at home. The location of the hotel was also very good. Within walking distance to many things. I almost forgot, the stay included a nice breakfast every morning, and if you had an early morning excursion planned, they would make up a small to go bag. If i ever return to Porto again, i would certainly stay there. I highly recommend staying there. The staff were all so friendly and helpful. All in all they made our vacation a very memorable one.

A fantastic stay in a wonderful house. It was discrete, understated, quirky, comfortable and very restful.||Close to the Trindade metro station (transfer from the airport) and accessible to all of the most interesting locations within Porto, although the area is a little hilly we found walking easy enough.||We stayed in the Urban2 appartment, the space was wonderful and so much better than a standard square "vanilla" hotel room. Very comfortable bed and sofa with outside area and a great bathroom with walk in shower ||Perhaps the best bit - the staff were all extremely friendly and persistently helpful. Chatting over the breakfast service and showing real interest in what we were planning. Always sharing excellent local knowledge and offering advice on where to go and how to get there. We were having difficulty booking one visit as they only accepted Portuguese bank transfer, a member of staff extend us the courtesy of paying from their own account and we refunded to her in cash - it seemed that anything we requested would not be too much trouble. ||Breakfast was not what some might have come to expect it is not a buffet but they provide local pastries, home made granola, local yoghurts and cheese with different bread rolls everyday. The fresh orange juice was FRESH.||Porto obviously has many opportunities to eat out and closer to the Canto there are lots that are not part of the mainstream tourist attraction, they provided good food at excellent value and the ubiquitous wonderful Portuguese wine.

Simply the cutest boutique hotel in Porto. If you blink you will walk right past the door but once you are inside the 3 story building holds a kitchen where the make the best made to order breakfast and coffee (along with wine tasting and cooking classes), a magical wine dispenser, cute work nooks, a sunroom, garden and pool. Not to mention to staff (hello Hannah) who are so kind and always around for whatever you need (including personal recommendations on what to do or where to eat). A must stay when in Porto.
