Newfoundland Chow Mein Is a Quintessentially Canadian-Chinese Dish | Eater

"A white, trailer-style Chinese restaurant just off the Trans‑Canada Highway in Deer Lake functions as a busy, multigenerational lunch hub, with a two-level dining room of about 30 tables and a long communal table where mostly seniors gather. Run by Richard Yu, a Toisan native who trained as a high‑school science teacher before emigrating to Vancouver and eventually relocating to Newfoundland for a steadier life, the kitchen offers a familiar chop‑suey repertoire (egg rolls, chicken guy ding, sweet‑and‑sour pork) alongside ‘Canadian’ plates like fish and chips, liver dinners and T‑bone steak. Yu adapted many recipes to suit local tastes and ingredient availability: crunchy, deep‑fried spareribs that succeeded in Vancouver were replaced by slowly braised, fall‑off‑the‑bone ribs for an older clientele, and the local version of chow mein—thin strips of stir‑fried cabbage served with vegetables and meat—was born out of necessity when noodles and some Chinese staples were hard to source on the island. A sign clarifies that chow mein in Newfoundland often means cabbage unless diners specifically request noodles; the cabbage version is richer and more umami than a typical noodle chow mein and has become a regional specialty. The place embodies immigrant entrepreneurship and practical creativity—modifying techniques and menus to fit local demographics and supply constraints, and in doing so creating dishes that feel both Canadian and Chinese." - Ann Hui

One of the best Chinese food restaurants in NL. After 10 days in NL, starting from St John's, we finally found this restaurant. Because of the season, you can only take out and must pay in cash or debit. No credit card. Affordable price. Easy parking in front of the restaurant and free. Fast services. Clean toilet. Will come back again to try the another menu. Recommended😍.

I absolutely love the beef and broccoli, don’t know why this place is SO GOOD, but for me it becomes happiness in a takeout container lol.

Most amazingly warm and friendly staff, and very warm atmosphere. Relatively standard Canadian-Chinese fare, but prepared well, with quality cuts of meat that are perfectly cooked. Scallops are a nice addition to a number of dishes, which haven't seen at a lot of Chinese restaurants around. Service is attentive and the wait time for your food is short. Definitely worth a stop if you're looking for Chinese food in the area, or even a relatively quick lunch. Will be back!

We came all the way from Toronto Ontario and are nicely surprised by this Chineses restaurant. We ordered three dishes: Cantonese chow menu, teriyaki beef and seafood veggies on rice (I only remember to take pictures after we finished the first dish and half way through the rest). The portions are huge and they tasted like homemade! Definitely will drop by again before we head back to Toronto!

Today was my first time going to Canton, Me and my sister ordered a combo #2 which was plenty for just the two of us. They are extremely generous with their food sizes and one meal was perfect for two people. I didn’t have a long wait for the food, The woman who greeted me was very polite and friendly. I would 100% recommend their business!

Stopped in for a late dinner as our flight was delayed. The owners are sweethearts! The food was great and we would not hesitate to stop in again the next time we visit deer lake!!!!

Appearance-wise, it is a very small town family Chinese restaurant I started it with the Wonton soup. Normally I have to add soy sauce to the boring broth. However this did not require any additional season. I had combo plate #2: Egg roll, fried rice sweet and sour chicken and chicken chow mein. The S&S sauce was mildly sweet and actually a bit sour. Very refreshing and enjoyable. The chicken balls themselves were meaty. The fried rice had to subtle delicious flavour. The chicken chow mein was superb. Very highly recommended. I will be back next time I am in Deer Lake.

Currently there is only take out service, which is fine by me. The portions are huge and the food is delicious! We love to order the Jumbo platter, as it contains all our favorites in one dish. The chow Mein is fantastic! The service in this restaurant is superb and they are always happy to serve you. We love the Canton and will return again and again!

Yelp
Anyone who wonders if highway signs work, when you're hungry and want Chinese Food the answer is yes :) took exit 15 into deer lake and found the place no issues. Walked in and grabbed a table. Was greeted promptly by a lovely server who took my order. Seemingly seconds later the goodness sizzling in front of me and my tea was poured. Presentation was great. Prices great and best of all the fried rice spectacular and the chowmein a unique blend of cabbage and veggies. Tasted awesome. Egg role was good and chicken balls typical. Figured I'd stock traditional for a first time meal here but will be back next year when I pass through again. Thanks for being open for and great service and food.

Yelp
a change of pace from Newfoundland traditional. High cuisine? No. A good use of local ingredients, yes.`

Yelp
Typical Canadian Chinese food. It was good for what it was and the price was very reasonable. Décor is basic .Good service.
