Let me preface this by saying I have eaten here before and found it to be pretty good. This time though, it was eh. I might not have liked it because the last 6 months or so I have been eating "healthier" food and have avoided deep fried crap.
Well, last night I decided to get some takeout because I did not feel like going out or cooking. I placed my order via phone and was there with the food ready in about 20 minutes. I ordered the lemon chicken combination (not really knowing what to expect). The place is similar to most takeout Chinese restaurants found in strip malls but a little nicer. There is more dinning area with better decor but nothing to go on and on about. It is nice to not see that annoying large menu of generic pictures above an order counter though. The people working there are very nice and personable, unlike some similar places where you feel like you just stepped into the "Soup Nazi's" place (Seinfeld).
My meal included an egg roll, soup, chicken, sauce, fried rice, cookies, fortune cookies, and a bag of tea. I also got some "house" mustard; I usually love this stuff at any Chinese place. One thing that I disliked right off the bat was the Styrofoam containers, not only are they just icky creations, the food was placed into them hot so the Styrofoam melted a bit (Yum, toxins). First, the fried rice seemed as though it would have been really good...... four hours prior. The chicken was a thin breast, breaded, fried, and placed in the container with a nice pool of grease. The lemon sauce that accompanied the chicken seemed to be a cheap honey based sauce with a lot of lemon zest and a few slices of lemon added. The Egg roll was your run of the mill frozen edible object that was fried and thrown in a bag. The egg drop soup was pretty good but a little yolky for my taste. Lastly, my biggest disappointment, the mustard was not very good. For some this may not be a big deal, but for me it is a very important part of the meal. The mustard was runny, too tart, and not spicy enough. I never made it to the cookies or the tea and I threw out more than half of my meal.
I have had good experiences with the food in the past but that was when dining in. Maybe the secret is to dine in and not get takeout. To be honest, I will probably eat there again in the distant future but it will take a while for the memory of this meal to vacate my brain. The only reason I am giving 2 stars and not 1 is because of past experiences that I would rate 2 or maybe 3 stars.
