This place is like a 1980's time capsule. Qingdao Beer calendar on the wall? Check. Table older than your grandpa? Check. Paper placemats with Chinese zodiac? Check.
The Chinese name of the restaurant is way more interesting, 羊城, the City of Rams. Around 900BC, the city of Canton had a famine. The gods gifted the people 5 good luck rams that brought 3000 years of prosperity to Canton. Ok, enough history lessons.
The waiters are fast and emotionless, which is typical of old school Cantonese restaurants. I turned on my charm and the waitress finally smiled . I ordered the first thing on their lunch special, Mongolian Beef . It is one of the most famous and least authentic Chinese dish.
Like magic, the egg drop soup appeared instantly on the table. Who need small talk when your waitress has super power speed. Very nice soup for a cold winter day.
Then the main dish came so fast I barely swallowed my last bit of soup. Why do people love old school Chinese restaurants? It is the value. The dish is huge, a full serving of fried rice, a full serving of chow mein, and a generous portion of beef. Honestly in any other restaurant it can be sold as 3 separate dishes. The beef was sweet, tangy, with mild spice (Cantonese people are lightweight when it comes to spicy food), with delightful white onions, carrots. Shameful, guilty pleaser for sure. The fried rice even have bits of bbq pork in it. When the bill came, it is $13 tax included. I ate until I burst and I only finish half of the food.
If you want a quick, hearty, delicious Chinese fix, this is the place for you!
