I stopped in at Chạo Cá Chò Cú in Westminster after hearing so much buzz, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The place was packed with mostly Chinese and Vietnamese locals, which to me is always the best sign that a restaurant is doing something right. The atmosphere was busy but still welcoming, and the staff were extremely friendly and attentive even with so many tables to take care of. What really stood out for me was their vegetable chow fun. The noodles weren’t quite as wide or as thick as I expected, but they were still cooked beautifully—chewy, flavorful, and full of that smoky wok aroma that makes chow fun special. The vegetables were fresh and plentiful, and the whole dish came together in a way that was absolutely delicious. A lot of restaurants don’t even serve proper chow fun noodles, but this place does, and it makes a big difference. The menu itself is a unique mix of Chinese and Vietnamese dishes, which gives you a lot of options depending on what you’re in the mood for. Everything I saw coming out of the kitchen looked generous and authentic, and it’s clear why this spot is so popular among locals. One thing to note: they don’t take credit cards, so make sure you bring cash or be ready to pay by Zelle. It’s worth the extra step because the food and service really deliver. If you’re in Westminster and want to experience a local favorite with excellent chow fun and a lively crowd, this is the place to go.

Canton Restaurant impressed me with its comforting congee served in traditional clay pots. The porridge was smooth and flavorful, topped with fresh ginger and herbs. The fried dough sticks were perfectly crispy and paired well with condensed milk. A warm, satisfying breakfast spot with authentic flavors.

Food: We tried three things 1) We try the HK style beef chow fun and it was really amazing a must try here. You can taste the charcoal broiled taste and it was well seasoned. Might be a little oily though but the taste is very nice 5/5 2) Next is fish Congee with pork blood on sides. The presentation is nice and taste is average but I try putting little hotsauce and fish sauce to add flavor and it went well 4/5 3) Chinese Donut is a must too. taste blend well with the congee and taste is reallu 5/5. Service: When we came in it was not too crowded so the order was done pretty fast so service is 5/5 Ambiance: It was nice and clean like typical vietnamese restaurant nothing fancy. Parking: A lot of parking space.

This place is a comforting and affordable restaurant that serves Vietnamese food. It’s my go-to place for chao, and they come served in cute bowls that hold heat well, so there’s no need to worry about your food going cold before you finish. My favorite side to add is the fried Chinese donuts! Heads up, the restaurant is cash only!

Food was good but I found hair in my fish.

First time here because we wanted porridge. Went on a weekday. The porridge is comforting and the egg rolls were yums.

The porridge was good and savory. The grilled fish combo with vermicelli and veggie was not bad. 3 things I don't like: The tables are not clean. Cash only. No rules for the waiting list. I waited 20 minutes for my table but some Vietnamese came after me and just took the table out of blue. Shameless!

I came to Canton Restaurant on a Sunday afternoon with my fiancé and we were seated right away. I was feeling under the weather, and have had it bookmarked for quite some time, so figured it would be an opportune moment to finally try restaurant chao (I've only ever had it homemade at my fiancé's family parties), and wow I was blown away! What we ordered: - Dill Tumeric Fish - another new Vietnamese dish I've been wanting to try, and it was delicious! It came out in a sizzling platter, so it stayed fresh the entire meal. We also ordered rice paper to make our own spring rolls, and it came with tons of fresh herbs. I loved the crisp/char on the outside of the fish, the grilled onion, and the dill which didn't overpower the dish at all. - Fish Porridge - this was sooooo comforting, and everything I needed being sick. The texture of the fish in the porridge was amazing, only to be made even better when you create your own adventure by adding in all the accessories like vinegar, fish sauce, and white pepper. A true flavor explosion! It came in a pretty large (and very aesthetic) barrel, and we ended up wiping it clean cause I just couldn't stop eating it! My only regret is forgetting to order a side of the Chinese donuts to go with it. - Hanoi Style Grilled Pork w/ Vermicelli & Veggies - my fiancé ordered this dish, and I wish I had more to report, but I was so consumed in the tumeric fish, fish porridge & all of its glory lol. He said it was a solid dish, but the previous 2 were such standouts we could probably go without ordering it next time. Service was quick, portions were huge, and I'm glad we went with 3 items that were in the House Specials for our first visit. Now I'm so excited to come back to try more of the menu!

Excellent food and generous portions. First time going, and since we're not familiar with the food, so we ordered strictly off their recommended items: -Fish with dill (highly rec) -Fish congee (highly rec) -egg rolls Fed us 4 adults well. Vibes are mostly locals. Restaurant was pretty full when we went on a Sat lunch. Staff is older (hence the amazing food!). Saw other tables with other tasty looking dishes. Will be back to try!

This is an old school locals spot. I had the chicken porrage with bean sprouts and the Chinese donut (fried bread). This dish was bursting with flavor. Hearty and delicious and the portion can definitely feed more than one person. The second time I tried their house special porrage and it was also amazing!!! Lots of shrimp, squid, chicken and fish. Be sure to get the Chinese fried bread. Dipping it in the porrage and eating it with a mouthful of the soup is so so good! Im going to try the fried fish the next time I go.

Delicious fish porridge from Canton Restaurant. We've been taking out their porridge pretty often during the Lenten season. They also pack the porridge to the brim and its loaded with fish filet pieces. We also enjoy their dill turmeric fish. It's got a very distinct taste, which we love. Their beef stir fried noodle is also very good. Hefty portion, which you can easily make into 2 meals. Overall really good experience with Canton Restaurant. Very easy to takeout and a solid staple in our takeout rotation.

Awesome mom & pop Chinese place with quite a large menu Got the: - House special Wonton noodle soup: 10/10, so good my hubby ate half of it before I could even stop him - Bok Choy veggies: 9/10, good but I wish the portions was a little more - House special Porridge: 8/10, lots of ingredients and cooked really well, but I prefer the true Canto style better as it could be more umami Hot tip: bring cash as they are Cash only. Great sizzling fish (one of the specialities and super popular dish at this restaurant). I personally wasn't a fan of the mì xaò because the noodles broke apart too easily and not as thick. Note: CASH ONLY!! Which kind of sucks in an area that's mostly moving to cashless payments

I came here on a Saturday around 11am with my Mom. They have a private large parking lot with other stores and restaurants. The restaurant is small, about 11-12 tables/booths. The customer service is great; fast, professional and efficient. The menu is extensive. Appears that everyone gets the Chao (Porridge). We ordered the dill catfish on a sizzling plate. It comes with vermicelli noodles, fresh vegetables and the delicious purple fish paste (i recommend squeezing a lime wedge to loosen it up). The fish is fresh, tender and large pieces. The vegetable are fresh. Its a great dish to share ($26.99). This is a great reataurant! Definitely recommend and will return!

Really delicious Cantonese Vietnamese food. I have been coming to this restaurant for many years because it never disappointed with 2 dishes. I love their porridge ( Cháo Cá) Surprisingly, even though they use tilapia or catfish (I'm not sure which), I didn't taste any of that fishy taste. Another must try is their Dill Turmeric Fish, ( Chả cá Thăng Long) delicious and delightful Everything was excellent. Parking lot is large but shared with a lot of other businesses in the plaza,but for sure you can find it around. Cash only !

Came in today for lunch and we loved everything that we ordered. The chicken porridge was so comforting, but I gotta admit that the fish porridge is truly amazing. It was very flavorful and the ginger elevates the dish even more. We also paired the porridge with the Chinese donuts and I can dream of this combination all day. The salty fish fried rice was very tasty and so was the #38 that we took some to go. Definitely worth the visit and would love to come back here when we're around.

I ordered two bowls of chao plus fried donuts to go with it. The service was fast, and all dishes came out at the same time. The plates and bowls used are also very cute and well insulated :)

The egg roll was the best in all of Little Saigon, I have had them 5x only once it was not crunchy, very few restaurants still have shrimp n crab in them, here the egg rolls were made w VN rice paper not Chinese thick skin wrap. It was so good I asked them how they made it so crunchy , they would not tell me! Must be black magic as it pulverized in the mouth. 5 stars for this. The soups were not special, their specialty supposedly grilled fish but it was just sautéed on an iron plate like everywhere else, I'm not a fan of fish n hate dill. I had the congee once but don't remember I'll have to do it again to review it. I feel blessed to live near Little Saigon, almost all other cuisine they used the excuse of Bide nomics to rob us blind! Hope I'm allowed to say it like it is. They reminded me daily to review this restaurant so here it is! You're welcome.

The reviews and the pictures are misleading and a nice twist to promote their business. Barely anyone was at the restaurant and the food is subpar. A hole in the wall establishment. Service was as dull as the food.

Canton Restaurant has been a staple in the Viet community in SoCal ever since I was a kid. This is THE place to get your favorite porridge, but if it's your first time you have to try their fish porridge. It hits the spot every time, especially on a cold day or if you're feeling under the weather. Another popular dish you need to try if it's your first time here is their Cha Ca Thang Long (Dill Tumeric Fish). A great dish to share with friends where you combine all the ingredients into a lettuce wrap to dip in fish sauce. Honorable mentions go to their fail safe Beef Chow Fun, an easy dish for anyone and even better if you have the munchies. Same goes for their Deep Fried Chow Mein which uses a different noodle from the other places making it lighter and crispier if you're looking for all the textures. Lastly their House Special Fried Rice is just simply solid. Once you've had legit fried rice like this, Panda's version just becomes unedible. Their customer service has always been quick and friendly and a big shout out to Mike who always knows the best food suggestions. Either pickup or dine in I highly recommend giving this place a visit if you're ever in the area.

Food: 4/5 The special porridge dish which include: fish, chicken, squid, shrimp was great. Seasoned well and plenty of fish served in a creative style bowl. The new poporridge that had pork intestine, pigs blood and liver was really great. Added Sriracha and it was perfect. Definitely order the side of Chinese donuts and it's a perfect way to start your day! Service: 5/5 Server was very nice, reminder you'll have to head to counter to pay for your meal. OMGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEE!! The most delicious CONGEE I've ever had... I should have known because it was recommended by an AUTHENTIC Chinese friend who is from the Alhambra/Monterey Park area. So, just know if you cannot make it there and need an equally GREAT CONGEE... THIS IS YOUR PLACE! After posting on my Facebook.... more than a few friends stepped up to comment that this was also their place to go for CONGEE!! Not only did I have the best ever CONGEE, I tried FISH CONGEE for the very first time. Sounded and looked odd (on Yelp) to me, but THERE'S NOTHING BETTER. For you non-fish people, it's NOT fishy at all, which always tells you HOW FRESH fish is. NO SMELL is what you should be looking for. That goes for cooked and/or raw. I ordered the Wor Won Ton soup and they packaged the noodles and goodies separate from the broth. My hub prefers thicker noodles, but he said it was delicious. (they definitely have the various soup broths down here!!) I just noticed a review from a Yelper friend from 2013 and times here have definitely changed. 1) the place is clean and newly remodeled looking inside 2) the young man who answered the phone (for me) spoke perfect English NOTE: *** CASH ONLY *** so don't disappoint yourself by not having cash!!

House Special Fried Rice: They made this so well here! I would come back to get their fried rice any day. It takes me back to childhood when my parents would take me to China Town in LA to shop and we'd go to the Chinese restaurants out there and get fried rice. 100% recommend their fried rice. Dat Biet House Special Chao with a Century Egg added: With the added century egg it is just the best meal to me! Of course, you have to get the Chinese donut on the side too to add that crunch factor. Bun Xao: This item was a bit different than any noodle stir fry I have had because they used bun which is a rice noodle that is typically used in soup dishes. I was pleasantly surprised; it has a nice kick to it and a savory curry flavor. We got the special, so it had all types of proteins in there that were all cooked to perfection.

Fairly good Chinese/Vietnamese food at a good value. The place is a bit small and they only take cash so be prepared. The service is standard of what you'd expect from an establishment like this one in Little Saigon so don't have too high standards as you're mainly here for food and value. I was craving bun cha Hanoi and found that this place made a decent one. The sauce/broth was really good and the vegetables were very fresh. The pork was a bit chewy for me though. My girlfriend ordered the porridge which was solid. Also, the water was a bit dirty as I had small black pieces floating in mine both times it was refilled. I'd bring my own bottle of water next time. I don't have many other places to compare its bun cha to other than my girlfriend's mother's cooking (which is still the top contender for me) so I'll probably be back to have it again if I get the craving. Although, I might also give other spots a try too.

Picked up a beef porridge for my sister since she was feeling well. Asked them what type of beef do they use and how they cook it. The lady that sat by the cash register (appeared to be the owner) said the chop and smash the beef by hand. Sounded good so I ordered it. Well, unfortunately it was not good. The beef was not really chopped and smashed as stated. It was sliced into small pieces and it was tough. Will not be back.

Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon with my parents. My mom is a bit of picky eater so we usually try to cater to her whenever we go out to eat! Good thing is, my mom loves porridge, which made it pretty easy to pick this spot since it had "chao" right in the name. It's located in a big plaza, but is a tiny shop within it so parking wasn't too hard to find even though the shop itself was a little tricky. We got lucky and came in right before the rush so we were able to get a table right away. I shared a Chao Long and the Dau Chao Quay with my mom while my dad got the Cat Heo Xao. The order came out within 5-10 minutes which was much faster than I anticipated. The portions and the flavors were good (with enough for my dad to take half of his dish home)! I'm glad we stopped by this spot as it is definitely a hidden gem. They're cash only so just be prepared!

I love this restaurant! It definitely has a hole in the wall feel. They specialize in Cantonese style rice porridge and have all the classic flavors. I get the fish porridge and I love how delicious and comforting it is. The portion sizes are generous. And make sure you order the Chinese donut which goes perfectly with porridge. They also do take out orders. And the price can't be beat! But beware, they only take cash!

This is my absolute favorite place for porridge! I've been coming here since I was a kid and always crave their porridge when I'm sick and need something comforting, especially during the cold winter months. My favorite dishes are the house specials: cháo cá (fish porridge) and chá cá thǎng long (barbecue fish on sizzling platter). These hit the spot every time and I love taking family and friends to try it. The porridge is so flavorful and the barbecue fish is deliciously crisp. Highly recommend coming here if you want something comforting! There's plenty of other dishes too like wonton noodle soup so there's something here for everyone to enjoy.

We came as a party of two, thankfully beat the rush as we saw more people line up to be seated. //FOOD// Porridge (fish): very flavorful! My husband who grew up eating porridge doesn't buy porridge since his family makes it all the time. He was left impressed at how good porridge can be. The fish is not "fishy" at all and soft Ca Thang Long: wow so impressive! I also go to another location for this but this one was better. A nice char at the bottom and very aromatic //PRICE// At time of visiting porridge was $11.50 and the fish was around $26 or $28? //SERVICE// The guy at the cashier who is a family member was so nice and told me about the history of the place. Food was fairly fast despite being busy //OVERALL// Love this place!

Sometimes I crave a bowl of chao and Canton hit the spot. I came here while I was sick with one other person. I wanted something not too heavy on the stomach and congee sounded good. Canton had over 10 different types of chao. Besides their wide variety of chao they even had noodles and rice dishes. Everything was very affordable and reasonably priced. The only bad thing is that they are CASH ONLY. However, they did tell us they will probably be able to start taking card soon. For lunch, I got their Chao Thit voi Hot Vit Bac Thao, which is salted pork with perserved egg rice porridge. The person I came with got com tam. I liked that my porridge came out in a cantonese bowl thing with some chinese donuts on the side. The congee was good but I wish it had more meat and egg in it. I also wished it had more flavor and I had to add more fish sauce in it. It was a tad bland. The person I came with liked the com tam but the meat was a little over cooked. Oh I also got a soda chanh that was really good. The service was good and the food came out fast. I loved how affordable it is here. The inside is very casual. It's great for small groups. Overall, it was a good experience and I would come back for chao.

We have not been to this restaurant for quite some time. We decided to order take out for lunch on a Saturday. Phone in order was quick and food were ready for pick up while restaurant was quite busy. Both items we ordered were good. The grilled pork with rice noodles and the turmeric, dill fish items were packed nicely with all fresh lettuces, herbs and sauces. My only concern was the price for the fish dish was $26, which I think is a bit high for the dish. Other than that, we enjoyed our lunch.

Came here this morning and this place was delicious! We got the century egg and shredded pork porridge and with Chinese donuts. This restaurant is located in a plaza so parking is really easy. The restaurant is small and it is cash only!! Overall definitely recommend checking this place out!

The best chao ca in town. I always come here to get porridge for my dad with a side of chinese donut. Never disappoints and always hits the spot. The service is like any other standard asian restaurant. The restaurant is clean and well kept.

Dear Canton, The fish porridge is average and lacks seasoning. The beef chow fun is only seasoned with oil. This dish should not be so heavily greasy. It took us a while to get seated, and the system the to get in line to pay is chaotic. Please start accepting credit card soon. The service is nice but shy of suggestions. Parking chaos already so it would be great easy dining experiences. Small and tight sit in, the two old men working there looks tired and stressed out. I hope they are treating their workers well.

We loved that this place was so homey! Eating the congee and Chinese donut felt like home and so comforting. The fish congee was delicious and they were pretty generous with the fish they gave. My fiance got the pidan (thousand year egg) congee, the egg was very mild in flavor. Food came out really quickly!

So happy I found this place. Great mom and pop spot for congee. Their congee is what they're known for. You can't go wrong with whatever congee you get. Comes with cut up Chinese donut youtiao. I also got a bowl of wonton noodle would with bbq pork which was avg hence the 4 stars. My bad. The other excellent dish was the fried fish. Will definitely be visiting again the next time I am craving something warm on a cold day.

I found this place by browsing through Yelp, and I was so happy I was able to make a visit after my half marathon! I was starved and ready to intake some carbs to get more sustenance in my body. Porridge remains one of my favorite childhood nostalgic meals, and it is hard to find in the Irvine area. So I was eager to try out the fish congee at this restaurant. Service was brisk, and I was glad that I had my friends who spoke Vietnamese because that helped expedite the ordering process. We shared the sizzling dill fish, potato fritters, and we all got our own pot of congee! We all loved how aesthetic the congee pot came in and the congee was so smooth with the perfect texture. We also loved the Chinese donut which complemented the congee very nicely. It is hard to come by good congee nowadays, so I will definitely return to this place whenever I am back in the area!

This place is tucked away in a big bustling Vietnamese plaza in Orange County. Initially, I heard about this place through my girlfriend who lives in the area and she hasn't had it for years. I never had it and I'm always open to new foods and restaurants so we went. We went and we ordered the fish porridge and the sizzling fish plate. I loved both. We ordered the Chinese donuts on the side for the porridge and it was nice and hearty. It also came in these kind of elaborate wooden buckets that added a nice aesthetic touch. The fish came on a skillet and was given to us with greens, vermicelli, onions, Jalapeno, and I think mǎm nêm. I love the fermented stuff but my girlfriend isn't too keen on it--but she liked this one. It's not as pungent and it's a bit on the sweeter side. The food itself was hearty and exactly what I expected and what she remembered it as. It was filling and delicious. The two older servers seemed like husband and wife and they were very attentive. The younger server was also always around when we needed something--I eat a pretty good amount of food disproportionate to my body size so we had to ordered the extra noodles and lettuce. Overall, definitely tastes like something I would crave. Will definitely be back.

This establishment only accepts cash. We visited to try their bun cha Hanoi after not being here for many years, and we noticed that it had been renovated since our last visit over a decade ago. The bun cha Hanoi was decent. Bun cha Hanoi is similar to grill pork vermicelli with two distinct differences. First, it has two kind of meats. A grill sliced pork and pork meat patties in a bowl of sweet fish sauce. Second, it is not given to you in a single large bowl but rather deconstructed in many bowls. You have to take each ingredients with the vegetables in small quantities into a small eating bowl and construct it each bite. What I appreciated most was the thin, non-fatty grilled pork used in the dish. It was tender and moist, with a wonderful smoky char. However, they only offered one meat patty, unlike other places that typically serve two or three of a similar size. Additionally, the fish sauce could use a bit more sweetness, as the dish would achieve a better balance when the meat's flavor and saltiness blend with a sweeter fish sauce. Overall, good fragrance on the meat. Could be better if more patties and sweeter fish sauce. It would also benefit from accepting other form of payments for the younger generations who use digital like Apple Pay or credit cards.

Wanted something light and filling so we stopped by this small restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised with how quick our food came out and the flavors. Price and portions were decent, $11.50 for the congee and $12 for the wonton noodle soup. I don't recommend the Chinese donuts because they were old and stale. They take CASH ONLY. Other than that, we enjoyed our food and will be back!

I have been coming here at least 15 years ago. I always love the food here. Fish porridge grilled fish on the hot pan are amazing. The restaurant always cleans the service area amazing Linda and Mike always take good care of us. Strongly recommended here come and try you will hook.

Decided to try their special dish.. the Dill Fish on a sizzling plate.. reminiscent of our trip to Vietnam. Also ordered the house special porridge with a side of fried flour, enjoying it immensely and even ordering an extra one to take home for breakfast the following day.

A small hidden gem in a strip mall that I've been to dozens of times, we decided to try this place for lunch on a Sunday. This is a very unassuming restaurant with a pretty decent sized menu. It's more of a Vietnamese/Chinese cuisine. We ordered the tumeric fish, wonton noodle soup (which you can see in the pics they both came out sizzling and steaming hot) and the grilled pork and egg rolls with rice. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The service is what you would expect from a mom and pops business and that's ok with me.

Always our go to spot for porridge! They recently started serving the porridge in these cute wooden pots. We always get the fish porridge with Chinese donuts on the side. We recently tried the chao long porridge and really enjoyed it. My husband likes the grilled pork vermicelli dish with egg rolls and also the wonton noodle soup. Other dishes we enjoy are the Singapore noodle, house fried rice and beef chow fun. When we dine in we order 3-4 dishes because we like taking home leftovers for the next day. We also like the fresh orange juice and Vietnamese coffee too. The restaurant is part of our usual rotation and we love getting porridge for takeout on rainy days Service is friendly and fast.

I was craving porridge and couldn't find a good place in town until this spot came up. They offer tons of options with very generous amount. Their Chao Ca (fish) is my favorite comparing to Chao Suon (pork). Pro tip: order blanched bean sprouts and chinese donuts to eat with it. It'll elevate your dish to a next level. To compare to Chao Dem, this place is smaller, but much cleaner, and service is faster. They have a variety of porridge style, but their chicken isn't as great as Chao Dem. If you are feeling under the weather and need to find a spot for porridge, here's the right spot for that.

I tried out this place. I got the porridge. It was alright. However, what ruined the meal was that the old male waiter never brought me my water. WTH, maybe they don't give free water or charge for water. I was too pissed off to ask again for it. Cash only establishment, which is another minus. So I just ate, decided to leave quickly and will not come back.

We were quickly handed a menu by an elderly asian man, whom we presumed to be a waiter, and proceeded to order shortly after. The waiter did not really talk to us (we found out later he does not speak English, but more on that later), we had pointed items on the menu to communicate which items we were like to order. Onto the food and drinks, we ordered the below and shared both dishes: 1. Chicken Porridge ($11.50), with a side of Fried Flour ($2.75). This was served quickly, hot and delicious. There were plenty of chicken in the porridge and the fried flour goes really well with porridge. Portion was decent as well. 2. Wonton Soup Noodles ($8.99 special). This was a simple and straightforward dish. Pork wonton paired with thin egg noodles created a nice combination. It always hit the right soup spot for me. 3. Sweetened Pennywort Juice: this never came so no comment on the taste. By the time the meal was done, I already was too full to drink a beverage. So the food were all really good. Due to the waiter not speaking English, we finished the meal without beverages, not even water was served for some reason. The cashier lady, Theresa, had apologized and offered water as we were checking out by the counter. We kindly declined and mentioned that we'll have to try out the beverage next time. Depending on the temperature of the day of your visit, the establishment can be a little warm due to no presence of AC (it was mid-80s when we went). This can be an issue if you sweat easily as food were served fresh and hot--just something to note. Overall, would recommend the restaurant for the delicious food, just note the few stipulations mentioned above.

that fish, worth the drive and so are their congee. Decent service, the owner is welcoming and friendly. Your typical hole in the wall space, clean and bright. I definitely recommend a visit.

Met one of the owner's daughters in Taipei who told me to check this spot out and say hi! Ended up finally going and tried out the Hong Kong style beef chow fun and I finished the entire thing. Love the mom and pop vibe here, great spot that seems to also have porridges and wonton soup that I'll have to try next time I'm around town.
