Great little Chinese place! Cozy little spot, nothing fancy but was a good place to take a kiddo as it’s pretty casual. Great family spot and adorable too. Food was stellar!! Got chow mein, the cashew chicken was awesome (maybe too much celery but otherwise good)! I love what they did for the kids menu too. They do fried chicken with a side of fried rice. Not chicken tenders but Chinese fried plain chicken then sweet and sour sauce on the side to dip in. So glad it wasn’t another side of just breaded chicken tenders! Staff was kind and wonderful! Side not I love that they use the old style metal dishes, haven’t seen those in ages but I love it!

I highly recommend the egg rolls. The meal and service was wonderful. Go today!

Google
Pleasant dine in experience. Good egg rolls! The same recipes as the old downtown Wongs! Same dishware even! All very good!

Google
The pineapple stir fry and YuChoy stir fry were both vibrant, fresh, and delicious! The egg rolls are huge! The hot mustard and plum sauce are perfect accompaniments. We got there before the dinner rush ~4:45 and ate in. Happy with the service.

The food is fantastic! Most of the food can be made gluten free and there are multiple vegetarian and vegan options. Sam is a great server and very knowledgeable.

For those who like heat when you order it, you will be happy. The flavors are authentic and the menu offers a nice variety. Decent prices, easy to find, and helpful staff. Nice Asian market across the parking lot too! #LocalGuides #OnGoogleMaps

Generous portions. I took some home because one dish was enough for two meals. Attentive, friendly, and helpful staff.

I ordered sweet and sour shrimp. The shrimp was microwaved. The sauce tasted like ketchup. The shrimp was cold inside. it was a fried shrimp but since it was microwaved it was not crispy it was very soggy. The rice had a smell as if it was old. We love Chinese food and this is one of the worst restaurant in Rochester.

Yelp
Wong's has history as the oldest Chinese restaurant in Rochester, and it is cool to see it still here today. Service is wonderful and the folks running it are friendly and helpful. Food wise, it is serviceable and not the most impressive for American Chinese. It gets the job done and there are a few dishes like the pork fried rice and pineapple stir fry, but I would skip the saucy chicken dishes given the blandness. Overall, give it a try and enjoy a blast from the past.

Yelp
Wong's Cafe is an institution in Rochester. It is the first Chinese restaurant that opened in this city and has been going strong for over sixty years. It used to be in downtown Rochester. It moved to its current location a few years ago, which is around the block from where I used to live. When I lived in Rochester, I didn't order Chinese food much. I can probably count the number of times that I ate at Chinese restaurants on one hand. It wasn't my thing, mainly because I was interested in other cuisines and made Chinese food at home. I did know about Wong's Cafe when I moved to the city, thanks to ordering delivery during my first two weeks moving into my new surroundings. Its current location used to also be a Chinese restaurant. Although I could walk over there from my apartment, I never tried the food there. Every time I visit my old neighbourhood. I'd see the large Cantonese Wong's Cafe sign. I'm not sure why there was the need to add Cantonese to the name. I'm guessing that most Chinese eateries in Rochester have a combination of Cantonese, Hunan, and western items on the menu. Perhaps it offered more Cantonese items? After shopping at Target, I wanted to have dinner here. I drove over and parked in the lot. It's across from the Asian grocery store that I like. I walked in and was immediately greeted by a nice woman. I got a table in the dining area. There were a few folks eating dinner. I looked at the menu. Your best bang for your buck with variety is getting the Wong's family dinner. You get a choice of soup or an appetizer, and either pork fried or steamed rice. There are five different combinations to choose from. I ordered a Diet Pepsi. I also got combination 5 of Wong's family dinner. The soup was hot and sour. Appetizers consisted of your choice of egg rolls or fried crab rangoons. Aside: I despise seeing crab rangoons on a menu in a Chinese restaurant. It caters to western folks who enjoy cream cheese mixed with fake crab as filling. Cream cheese is not a staple in Chinese culture. I like it on bagels. You'll never see me make wontons and stuff them with cream cheese. Ick. So, I got the hot and sour soup. I have heard great things about their egg rolls. Next time, I'll give them a try. Combination 5 consists of Hunan beef, sweet and sour chicken, and pork fried rice. You can substitute the pork with whatever protein that you like if pork isn't your thing. My Diet Coke arrived first. It was cold and yummy. I got a refill during my meal. My hot and sour soup arrived next. It was delicious. I loved the chunks of tofu, mushrooms, and more. It was comforting and authentic. I was expecting my dinner to be all one one plate. Nope, it's fancy at this eatery. You get each item in silver vessels with stands and covers. It was a mini family-style meal. So cool! The pork fried rice was yummy. I loved the pork, onions, peas, and egg. It was flavourful and reminded me of how my mom makes fried rice. It was authentically delicious. The sweet and sour chicken surprised me. You got solid chunks of white chicken meat that were lightly battered and fried perfectly. The sweet and sour sauce was light and tangy. It wasn't overly sweet. I loved it. The Hunan chicken was yummy. I was asked how spicy I wanted it. I didn't how how spicy this place does dishes, so I went with mild. I could have done medium. The chicken and veggies were perfectly seasoned. I loved the flavours. The veggies included carrots, snow peas, onions, broccoli, mushrooms, celery, and baby corn. I loved the variety. Delicious! My server asked if I needed a box towards the end of my meal. I was confident that I could polish off everything. I did. The food here was so good. I got the bill and paid with a credit card. I signed the bill and tipped. Done! I used the washroom before I made the drive back to Eagan. It's a single stall and was clean. I wished the woman a great evening. I noticed the specials as I left. There was a beef flat noodle dish that sounded good. Next time! I'm so glad that I finally tried Wong's Cafe. The original owners have handed the baton to a former head chef. The tradition continues. I look forward to returning for more good food. (496)

Yelp
Truly a trip down memory lane with authentic Wong menu items. The food was extremely flavorful and the price was very reasonable. If you are old enough to remember Wongs in downtown Rochester, this is a must stop trip down memory lane. Enjoy, we did.

M N.

Yelp
Had the chicken chow mein. Egg roll and sweet and sour chicken. The egg rolls were mushy as highlighted in another review like they're pre cooked and frozen. The sweet sour chicken is all white meat making it dense (chicken not velveted) and dry. The chicken chow mein was average. Overall average but probably will not order again. Staff is nice.

Yelp
Tasts nothing like old Wong's! Gummy fried rice, salty egg foo yang, runny sweet and sour. Very disappointing. I used to love Wong's!

Yelp
Great ambiance. Loved the service. Best orange chicken I've had in Rochester. I would recommend this place for good, filling dishes, also much higher quality chicken than any local Chinese restaurant.

Yelp
I went to college in Rochester years ago and ever since I ALWAYS look forward to coming to this place. When I heard they were moving I was worried food would change and everything would change but it didnt! Its hard to explain to people in the TC how AMAZING their fried rice and Egg rolls are without having it near by but I did get some friends to travel and try it and they agreed its some of the best food ever! I love this place and always come to it when I come to Rochester. I always find time to fit it in.

Yelp
I'm from the East Coast and so far haven't found a decent Chinese food place in Rochester Minnesota. The service was nice. The egg foo young left an unpleasant texture and taste of old burnt oil in my mouth. The fried wontons (their crab rangoons) were the consistency of hard plastic and tasted as if they were fried the day before and kept under a heat lamp. The egg roll was inedible and the inside wasn't cooked. Very mushy, the color and texture of cream of wheat and flavorless. The chicken lo mein was something I've never seen before. Not like any lo mein I've ever had. It was ramen or angel hair and overwhelmed with bean sprouts. The flavor was not pleasant. Had trouble finding enough chicken to call it chicken lo mein, was mostly vegetables. The sweet and sour chicken were small nuggets, tasted like fried in old dirty oil.

Yelp
Great food, yummy deliciousness that the won ton soup is! Great dumplings, too. Wonderful service, and a quiet atmosphere. I'll definitely be back here when I'm Rochester!

Yelp
I am hooked on the chicken chow mien only place in town like it there egg rolls also are great

Krista S.

Yelp
The worst Chinese food I've ever had! Took order to go. Egg rolls were mushy. The Mongolian beef was 3 small pieces of beef and the rest was cabbage. No flavor. Fried rice had no flavor. Everything tasted like grease. We threw it all away.... Even my kids who love any Chinese food wouldn't eat it. Never again.. probably should have figured they we weren't good when there was one person eating in the restaurant at 6:00 on a Saturday.

Yelp
I'm not sure why we went a third time and the last time. The food is poor quality Chinese Food. Awful egg Rolls. The noodle are almost always over cooked . Worst Chinese Food in Rochester . Now we'll never return .

Yelp
We've been treating ourselves to Wongs for years, but no longer will do that. We ordered a to-go order this past week, got it home, and it even smelled odd. No where near what the original Wongs used to be in flavor, appearance, and price. Our bill was $28, and the food was put in the garbage...we should have learned from other reviews.

Sheryl N.

Yelp
We have eaten at Wongs many times and enjoy the staff and the delicious food. The best egg rolls and hot and sour soup in Rochester. I love the Pad Thai and chicken LoMein and my husband loves the sechwin chicken. The vegetables always taste fresh. The servings are large enough for a second meal. We cant wait until they reopen inside seating. Right now you can get carry out.

Yelp
Hadn't been to Wong's since they moved to 18th Ave. thought I'd try since I now live pretty close to there. Everything just tasted... off. I know that Chinese food restaurants all do things a little different, but this different isn't one I like. Got the general tsos chicken, sweet and sour chicken, wontons and chicken wings. The general Taos was white meat, that really wasn't the issue but was very tough and not the best coating. The sweet and sour chicken was okay, but the sauce was the worst I've had. The wontons are just okay and the chicken wings have a seasoning on them I really don't care for. Edible but won't go back. I've been to nearly every place in town and this one would be my last choice. Giving two stars as their redeeming quality was their staff. Super friendly and great service. (I got a to-go order).

Joseph F.

Yelp
Ordered here for the first time with my gf. We both agreed that it wasn't very good and stopped eating it. I hate wasting food but it was just not good. Bland and sad

Yelp
I am so thrilled to have good Chinese on the north side of town. My standard order from here is tofu with vegetables in sezchuan sauce = super yummy! Their hot and sour soup is delish and so is their egg roll. The egg roll is large and could be divided - but it's so tasty you'll eat all of it. My husband has had the chicken/cashew and he liked it, however he's not a huge fan of their sweet and sour chicken. Overall, Wongs is good Chinese and worth a try!

Yelp
This moved to the new location by my house so we finally tried it! Good typical Chinese fare. Loads of veges in the Big Bowl Soup, other was happy with Triple Delight. Really want the Cashew Chicken or Curry next time!
google avatar

Vivian L.

Yelp
Ate lunch here... Never going back. They only serve two types of noodles that aren't exactly typical Chinese food, especially pad Thai noodles. Tried to order in Chinese for a specific dish, but no one there speaks it. Their BBQ pork fried rice was stale tasting and smelling, and had only one piece of BBQ pork in there. It pretty much looked like really stale rice with soy sauce..The chicken and broccoli was bland but better than stale rice. For convenience sake... If I'm ordering take out, can I get a utensil of some sort with a napkin or two?

Yelp
My family and I have followed Wong's every time they have moved, I've been to every one of their restaurants and never once have I had a bad meal. The staff is so friendly and and even if I don't come for 6 months they still remember my regular order! BEST CHINESE FOOD IN ROCHESTER
google avatar

C L.

Yelp
I ordered a plate with orange chicken, fried rice and chop suey. I also had mushroom soup. The mushroom soup was really good. The fried rice was fine, yet left me wanting additional seasoning. The chop suey was not impressive and used canned mushrooms. This place could really use a makeover from the British chef on TV.

Yelp
From the staff to the food top to bottom Wongs has the best in Rochester! Sweet and sour sauce is one of a kind! Pork fried rice and their egg rolls are superb! Can't go wrong with Wongs!

Yelp
Wong's Cafe was the w(r)ong choice for dinner. Not only did my taste buds not agree with my dinner, let's just say I'll save the "potty" talk. Server did not tell us that the Hong Shu beef & the Cantonese style shrimp chow mien was the same sauce and veggies but just different meat and side. I wouldn't have minded the same sauce if the sauce had a taste! It was literally a dash of maybe soy sauce, water, & starch to thicken. No taste or flavor whatsoever. Egg rolls also had no taste or flavor by themselves. It was very mushy and had no texture. (I honestly think this is what got me sick). To mask the no taste, they serve their egg roll with apple sauce & spicy horseradish sauce. Server was kind but she should have known her menu & what sauce is cooked in what dishes. Waste of $30 & a hurt pride sitting on the toilet on a date weekend.

Yelp
The food is bad and completely lacks any type of flavor. They rushed us to order then completely forgot my soup. The egg rolls had rice in them, that was a first for me. And the rice was mushy and tasted really funny. Safe to say I won't be back to Wong's Cafe!
google avatar

Charity A.

Yelp
Great food. Only complaint is with the combo meals they would not allow me to sub pork for anything else...even for an up charge. Other than that, it was fast service and delicious food!

Yelp
We just moved to the area and this was our first go at chinese in Rochester. We ordered the combination #5. Hunan beef, rice, sweet and sour chicken with egg rolls and an entree of general tso chicken. The food was good, the hunan beef was my favorite, which usually my favorite is sweet and sour chicken but I didn't really care for it. We have a favorite "back home" we compare our chinese food to and during our travels we haven't found anything that compares. The food came really fast even though they were extremely busy and our waitress was hilarious. She was hard to understand but she was definitely a character! I'm sure we will be back.

Yelp
This is where you go to get the best quality of Americanized Chinese food in town. The family that owns Wong's are hardworking and super friendly. They treat you right and are sure that you receive the best product that they have to offer. The egg fu yung, house lo mein, and sweet and sour shrimp are a few of my favorites and have been enjoying these dishes since I was a little girl.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood American Chinese establishment. The staff is very friendly and they have a big menu. We have tried several dishes and all are cooked to order and meets our expectations. Lots of seating and good atmosphere.

Ron B.

Yelp
They serve applesauce with their egg rolls! The chef has a heavy hand with the cornstarch. What else do you need to know? Dreadful....
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
We ordered the Mongolian beef and the orange chicken. We liked the orange chicken better but both were just okay.

Yelp
Amazing service and fantastic food at a decent price. Best in Rochester!

Yelp
This place had a really good name behind it when it was downtown under a first owner. I sadly never got to experience that. I have however experience the current owners Wongs in two different locations. Both times was a disappointment. There are enough people in town that don't know good Chinese that Wongs could still survive but the food is subpar.

Jeff H.

Yelp
Wong's is delicious. It isn't the prefab Chinese like most places. All of their food is made from scratch and made fresh daily. I typically have sweet and sour chicken. The sweet and sour sauce is home made, the chicken pieces are huge! You typically get 8-10 pieces of chicken which is more than I can eat. The atmosphere and interior leaves something to be desired, but the food makes up for it.

Ronald R.

Yelp
I hadn't been to Wongs since they moved to North 18th Ave. I ordered the combo dinner of pork fried rice, sweet and sour chicken and egg foo young. I added the egg roll to my order. The egg roll was large, but the sauce they served with it was actually apple sauce. Weird. The flavor of the egg roll was forgettable. The sweet and sour chicken contained the best chunk of tastey white breast meat in town. The breading, however, pretty much canceled out the good white meet. The breading was heavy, doughy and undercooked. Not a good thing. The egg foo young was the best I have had anywhere - not greasy, firm and fresh. The fried rice was absolutely awful. It was served in a big clump all mushed together. It was supposed to contain pork, but that was almost impossible to find. Verdict on the fried rice - the worst I have ever been served. The egg foo young was good enough to bring me back, but I would not order the egg roll, sweet and sour and for sure, not the fried rice. I wonder how the General Tso might taste at Wongs.

Yelp
Wong's is great food at a great price. I remember their AWESOME egg rolls as a kid and was happy to find this location after many years thinking they were not around after moving from downtown! Usually for lunch and get an egg roll or two to take home. Best Egg Rolls! Its not a high class fancy place but I go there to eat!
google avatar

Yelp
Took my kids and mom here on 12/10/2013. The staff were very friendly and informative about the food and history of Wong's. My kids had the children's plate of sweet and sour chicken which they loved! I had the General Tso's chicken (medium heat.) The chicken is very taste and filling for both my dish and the children's plate. We also had 4 small bowl's of Wonton soup, very, very delicious! My mom had the triple delight, she was not very happy with this dish! All in all we had a good experience and will certainly go back for more!

Juice N.

Yelp
Food is terrible. We first went to Wong's in 1990 when it was downtown and said we would never go there again. We were in the area and decided to go tonight. Egg rolls just plain sucked. Horrendous. Food was terrible. Gave me so much gas that I could not stand to be in the same room with myself ... vomited. Just terrible. Decision in 1990 was the right one. Not ever going back.

Joesph M.

Yelp
Slow service and the food tasted like it was from the grocery store and heated up very unimpressed

C M.

Yelp
The worst "chinese" food I have ever had! The fried rice tasted like it was 4 days old and just reheated in a microwave, As for the general taos and szechuan pork...just plain disgusting. Not one part of our meals had more than 3 bites taken before they were thrown into the trash!! My feet will never ever step into that place again.
